No matter which instrument, this piece hits me hard...it's incredible how deep it sinks into your heart...and it's surprisingly beautiful on the harpsichord in this performer's hands. When it modulates in major key, I feel like someone is whispering me, "it's all right, you can relax and rest, nothing is going to hurt you", followed by the part that has feelings of loss and loneliness, like the sun starts going down and you face is now in the shadow, but still feel alive and someway very positive, taking the fate as it is, holding all the memories of joy and sorrow... it's just unbelievable you feel like going through all the phase of your life and al the emotions you felt so vividly in such a short amount of time.
And harpsichord sounds so beautiful, like a gentle sunlight passing through leaves of trees, or snowflakes slowly breaking down on your hand, warm, poetic, telling stories, leading you to find a little happiness in every moment, appreciation for being here....

The most curious is that this is possible thanks to the interrelationships of the notes, which is a fluid mathematics. Music filters the meaning from life experiences so that it is lfited from its concrete physical context and becomes accessible to people from other times and places.

What I like best about Rondeau is his ability see beyond the notes and the phrasing to an organic conception of the music that is always a revelation. It's not virtuosity so much as vision.

This is some of the best Bach I’ve ever heard, and I’m including all his other works for different instruments/voices. One thing I love about Jean Rondeau is his sense of musical pacing. You never feel like you’re in a monotonous place in any part of the piece.
Wow! He makes it sound as if it was written originaly for the harpsichord!
To be fair, Bach was notorious for not giving a fuck which instrument would interpret his work because he composed in a way that obeyed every instrument's quirks.

@@Tore_Lund It's well known that Bach played the violin. As CPE Bach said about his father : "'In his youth and until the approach of old age, he played the violin cleanly and penetratingly, and thus kept the orchestra in better order than he could have done with the harpsichord"

Perhaps one of the greatest pieces ever written for the violin. Sounds great on any instrument. Love this Harpsichord interpretation ! Bach's musical language is universal and not timber-dependent.
I hadn't expected this to be so good. M. Rondeau overcomes the limitations of the harpsichord and creates a wonderful performance.
Harpsichord has is own character vs a piano not limitations. Like you wouldn’t judge an oboe starting from a saxophone.

Bravo ... you know how there's always a little room for interpretation of the Masters and sometimes I feel like I would do something just a bit different? NOT this time. Jean took us on a true magical emotional journey starting with the saddest minor key melting into a bright light of major and eventually bringing us back to reality. A true audio Michelangelo right there. Not to slight the video footage either. He just showed us that we can soar like an eagle in the middle of the most depressed of times !! BROVO X 10

Overwhelmingly transcendent. This apparition of a man has been infused with angelic and godlike attributes, not the least of which is his profound understanding and absorption of the celestial. I believe it will be a long time until we witness another so extraordinarily gifted.

First rendition of this "war horse" I have heard on harpsichord. It's absolutely stunning. There are harmonic passages that take on a very different tonality when compared to the same sections when played on the piano. I very much like this different take. Your artistic interpretation results in a marvelous listening experience. Thanks for something different!
He said in an interview that he considers the harpsichord to be like a large lute, you can really hear with how he spreads the chords he's trying to convey strumming, it's beautiful
So tender! I`ve listened to this magic piece of music a lot of times, and each time it makes me totally disolve in these beautiful sounds, appearing in such an abandoned place.
Seven years later, I have to say I was wrong. It's a lot more than just a beautiful rendition, but Jean's playing takes me to an ecstatic place where there are no words.

Amazing talent! His debut CD contains a fine rendition of Bach's BWV 1013, a solo flute Partita transposed to e minor. A masterful performance, as one would expect from a Bruge Award Winner. BWV 1013, along with the Ciaconna, is well worth the cost of the disc. The other items are simply an added bonus, given that they are more familiar. Buy this disc!!

Never had the chance to learn music as a child. Wanted to try learning the harpsichord - teachers telling me no-one plays the harpsichord. I would even have to make my own if I actually wanted to play on one!

That is beyond moving. I love that it is in the old tuning style as well. Idk what the temperament is though, I can just tell it isn't tuned from standard A=440. It's absolutely gorgeous. Whatever the tuning for that is, it's perfect. And perfectly played.

Paul Buckmaster Are you the Actual Paul Buckmaster? If so I really love your work, and it would fit that such a master as yourself be so knowledgeable. If you are not him, then as least you have some style.
The lower the pitch,the better the sound in my opinion. A lovely harpsichord. Maybe a Taskin. Two 8 fts and One 4ft registers. Well tempered tuning and A415. Did Bach write this on his wife’s death? It sounds better than on the organ. Wonderful performance.
@Paul Buckmaster it's not the same 415 Hz than Ab. It doesn't exist a specific temperament called "well temperament" (at least not historically). You have mixed a lot of unrelated context there, but it doesn't make any sense...

Encore aujourd'hui je ne sais pas comment fait Jean Rondeau pour insuffler tant de vie dans le clavecin , c'est incroyable. C'est toujours passionnant, clair, musical et fluide avec lui (même ici où il fait le show). Il a ça dans le sang visiblement. L'un des meilleurs clavecinistes que je connaisse et actuels, et il est français, soyons réjouis, Alleluia ! ;-)) Egalement la prise de son est toujours soignée sur ses enregistrements, ce qui à mon avis est primordial pour garder au clavecin sa sensualité.

This is perhaps the most amazing music composition ever written.
Surprenante interprétation. Les temps forts ne tombent pas du tout là où mon oreille de violoniste les attend. Les silences non plus. Le rubato me donne le sentiment d'être en déséquilibre constant. J'aime cependant le lyrisme, qui change des interprétations académiques telles que celle de Gustav Leonhardt, et le toucher précis et délicat, notamment dans les phrases rapides en arpèges. Ce clavecin a un timbre extraordinaire, remarquablement bien exprimé par l'instrumentiste. Il va falloir que je réécoute plus d'une fois pour mieux comprendre l'esprit de l'interprétation.

Fantastic. He has brilliantly demonstrated the possibilities of the harpsichord. I’m sure it’ll come as a revelation to many. I have no doubt JSB would have applauded and been thrilled by the performance.
The performance is one thing, the adaptation of the “Chaconne” is quite another. No doubt people would love the performance, but that’s missing the essential point! People try as they might to get the essence of the original piece, for violin, grafted onto another instrument, but the drama is in the constant _bowing_ of the arpeggios, and since that cannot be done on a harpsichord, or piano, or lute, or any non-bowed instrument, it doesn’t sound like the “Chaconne”! That’s the point! As for the thing about “…brilliantly demonstrating the possibilities of the harpsichord,…” what does that even mean??? He does that every time he touches the instrument! Such silliness!!

It is Bach himself who played this piece for the first time on violin in Coethen. The first instrument that Bach learned and played was the violin from age 5 to ten under his father's teaching. His father died and Bach went to live with his uncle and learned organ pipe. This is an answer for those who think that Bach was only a keyboard player (Bach was playing seven instruments) he was a violin master as well as an harpsichord killer player, as well as a pipe organ monster, as well... Jean Rondeau is a killer player as well but a soft killer, a gentle killer of absurdity, monstruosity, of our world. For several minutes he created a mad, sad, beautiful world, and he puts all his soul;and mastery to enjoy the music and he's happy as we are, to see such a noble children of or century, hard worker and fully passionnate give justice to Bach on harpsichord such a lovely,powerful and delicate instrument !! Thank you Monsieur Rondeau !!!
