lets acknowledge how amazing busoni did with transcribing this masterpiece. he had a nearly impossible task of rewriting this monumental violin piece for piano and nailed it!

    • @j.waardenburg8178

I acknowledge... and at the same time it makes me even more in awe with the origional.. if you compare the amount of notes played on the piano and violin... and having the same musical depth.. so complete. To me it's one of the most amazing things.

    • @FingersKungfu
      @FingersKungfu 10 месяцев назад

Actually, it's overratedd. Busoni was a romantic pianist and he turned a Baroque piece into a romantic showpiece. Gustav Leonhardt transcribed it for the harpsichord and did it better.

    • @yourmamawontlikeme

@@yourmamawontlikemeHe expanded the piece for sure, but I think it makes more sense to make it large in scale when you're writing for an instrument of the 19th century onwards. No point pretending we're playing a harpsichord. I find Busoni's arrangement incredibly exciting and moving, and I think Bach would be astounded of what the modern piano was capable of, and how expansive this piece can be made to sound on it.

I particularly enjoyed the sound of the piano as recorded...Hamelin didn't give it as much fire as, say, the Kissin recording, but he had more dynamic contrast. I can't imagine playing this, but it sure is nice to listen to on occasion.

It's worth pointing out that the Kissin recording you are probably referring to is a studio one, not a live performance, so it's hard to compare. But I can assure you that learning and playing this piece is super enjoyable and rewarding :)

Interesting that Hamelin with his hand span - able to reach an 11th - takes the first 7 chords with the left hand only - as is indicated in the score. Grimaud, who I think can just reach a 9th, uses the right hand from chord 3 onwards.

Brilliant performance, although he bangs a bit too hard in louder passages (although it could be a combination of the piano, the recording, and the acoustics).
But I notice that he uses an alternative (and less effective) coda than the one usually played; and he ends the piece on a D minor chord, instead of D major, which I believe is how Bach wrote it (Bach frequently ended his works in minor keys in the major)...I wonder why Hamelin decided to play it like that...but as good as this is, I don't think I've heard another performance to rival the one by Alicia, who plays with a majesty not matched by any other pianist...most pianists seem to make a noisy mess out of this piece; and I think her tiny hands are a real bonus in some of the more congested passages.

This is not what I expected, I am a great fan of MAH's live performances, he manages to get Alkan almost correct😁, something that few (if any) other pianists could say. I am also a great fan of lesser-known late19th/early 20th century composers and pianists. I fell in love with this piece of music when I was 17 (a long time ago), strangely, I did so while listening to Busoni's performance of it on the Duo-Art system (with all its faults - as this was released posthumously, it is possible that Busoni did not review it or correct it before release), the real piano (a well maintained, quality, 1920s instrument with excellent tone, and a very well rebuilt and adjusted Duo-Art system) added an additional emotional response not present in recordings.
There are parts of this recording that are quite beautiful but overall I can't say that I like it at all, even his usual technical excellence seems to have deserted him in places. I have briefly listened to other works in this concert and they are as expected. Was it poor preparation? It is not as if this is the first time he has played this work with the earlier performances being superb.
I am sure, many will disagree with my assessment. As to my favourite recording of this work, I vacillate over a surprisingly large range depending on my mood and, God only knows what other factors. Yet, for all the excellent performances of this work, I still tend to prefer those that are, in essence, closest to that Duo-Art performance. First love? Perhaps, but if I could take the emotion out of it, it wouldn't be music.
So, sorry, not my cup of tea, which is a great shame and a disappointment, the actual recording was quite good for a youtube video and I was very much looking forward to this performance.🙁

NOT an enjoyable performance...terribly contrived and often static...where is the registration of chords?....This is fast and slow and not to be unenjoyed again.

Maybe it's just because you have no taste?

Where is polarity in registers, strict dynamic requirements, timing strictness, an global miter? Too sensitive in frame structure.

Yeah, but like we'd want to see a recording of you playing it before we make any further judgements.

I don't like it. I cannot hear the song singing. Just fingering. I want to hear the full of music in this kind of music.

Somehow this doesn't work on any level whatsoever. Actually, it's a mess. :(

I don't care for many ways in which he plays this piece, but the way he reaches that crescendo at 13:51 is the best I've heard. Overall, a fairly good performance.
