Commute on 60+ MPH E-Bike

  • This shows my 8.5 mile commute to work. This isn't designed to show the incredible performance of the QS205V3 rather it shows that the ebike is perfectly capable of keeping up with traffic on "big" roads. It uses about 700 Watt hours of energy for 8.5 miles at "high speed", my Nissan Leaf uses about 2000 Watt hours for the same trip. It's super fun to ride too.

    Hey there Jim. I was just wondering if you would post a detailed list of what bike you started out with and the pieces needed to get up to 60mph when needed.I'm saving up for a Zero but think I can divert a few coins for something similar to what you have made if its not real expensive?I only have 1 and a half good legs after my Cancer nonsense and would love to ride and conquer some of the state land I was able to hike not too long ago that do not allow motorized vehicles but have numerous bike trails,and don't worry I'll hide a pin switch that will limit the speed to 20 MPH if the local Gestapo has an issue.I'm subscribing to your site now and will check back from time to time to see if I asked to much from ya.If so I understand and look forward to you getting one to do 80 MPH. ;)

    16 miles of range. Yeah that's about right with these big no-pedal bikes. Don't underestimate how much energy pedaling contributes, on bikes like the M1 Sportechnik Spitzen, which is plenty fast for an 8 mi commute. It can't quite flow with 40+ mph traffic like the bike in this video, and that makes a faster bike both less and more safe..

  • @akassebaum
    @akassebaum 4 года назад

    I get that it can go 60 mph. I just don't know if I would be comfortable riding on the main roads. I don't trust that people driving behind or beside will respect your space. Also how is the suspension going at those speeds? I've hit brief gaps and it can be jarring at 20 mph.

    Do you need a license, tabs, insurance or anything for this? My whole idea of getting something like this is to commute to work regularly and save $ on gas, and yearly expenses associated with driving a car or motorcycle. Can this be considered a bicycle?

    • @justbecause8085
      @justbecause8085 2 года назад

      Yes, it is technically considered an electric bicycle. Check the rules/regulations in your area as many now have restrictions on the wattage of ebike motors. However I can’t imagine most law enforcement have anyway to test or prove the wattage of your motor and the issue could probably be solved with a small sticker that displays the “correct” wattage placed on your motor😝

    How much did it cost you to build this come and how far can you go on fully charged batteries?

    • @MasterQuack14
      @MasterQuack14 7 лет назад +1

      a F.U.T.R Alpha frame will run you about $1100, 72v 23ah battery will run about $1100 as well. A Crown motor kit from EM3EV will run about $800. So, $3k before front forks, shocks, tires, and bottom bracket. So, all in total you are looking around $4-5k.
      With these builds range is inversely proportional to speed. So, for example a TC4065 build would get about 100 miles @20 mph, 60 miles @ 30 mph, and 30 miles @ 40 mph.That is why in this video he goes through half his battery in only 8 miles or so, because he is doing significantly higher speeds.

    • @ronbrown8611
      @ronbrown8611 7 лет назад +1

      MasterQuack14 this guy is correct. But rangr can aldo br affected by the efficiency of the controller. If you had an efficient kelly conytroller then you could get about 10+ more miles. I will be comparing my lyen to a very large kelly motorcycle controller. The kelly is about twice the size of my lyen.

    Initial response: Got this bike for my friend. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxUiL0GnyDjP32RJdd660sP8mZk4CRLTCJ Delivery was fast. And the friend was surprised I would order it when she had never suggested she wanted anything but the pedal bike she had. She has now ridden the bike two times and gives it a 10 and says it is very fun. We have some hills in our town that are very challenging to climb on a typical bike. But tonight she went up with the pedal assist and loved it. I was way behind on my standard bike, huffing and puffing. Now she is no longer lagging behind me. This thing is powerful enough that a person could go around town without any pedaling. She likes to get some exercise so on flat ground she hits the red button to turn off pedal assist and only uses the twist throttle when she's in a tough spot. The bike looks good. It is really a very nice bike for the friend. Now for me, when I get an electric bike, I'm twice her size and will be looking for a bigger watt motor and battery. But this one is just wonderful for my friend. I am happy with this purchase.

      What do you mean the spokes are caving in? Did you not tension them enough? I am halfway through designing a similar project and I decided to use 12 gauge spokes and motorcycle wheels. With a single cross in the rear, the spoke angle isn't optimal, but I will break spokes before ever seeing them "cave in". Spoke wheels operate on tension, not compression.

    Just curious why you don't use the bike path? I can't imagine it's legal to ride in a car lane at the speeds you are doing? I'm planning a very similar build qulbix raptor and planning on trying to be a little stealth about my commute. Love the bike!

    • @kingjamez80
      @kingjamez80  7 лет назад +8

      It's legal to ride in the car lane with a pedal bike, mine has the capability of exceeding 60mph so it has no trouble keeping up. Riding what is essentially an electric moped on the bike path isn't really fair to the real "riders" and runners, walkers, so I stay off of it when I'm at high power.

    • @mainesailah
      @mainesailah 7 лет назад +2

      Jim McPherson interesting did not know that. I can only assume if I were to try that it would attract the wrong attention in my town. Planning on using bike lane and just giving others the courtesy by not closing high rates of speed.

    • @verablack3137
      @verablack3137 7 лет назад +2

      Maybe legal where you are, but Washington State has a limit of 20mph on E-bikes, it would be considered a motorcycle here, and it has to meet all the DOT specs, have tags, title, etc. That being said, I wouldn't exceed 20ish on a bike path many aren't really designed for it, much less the other people who may be using it, and on the road keeping up with traffic is always best if possible.

    • @ajregester
      @ajregester 6 лет назад

      @Vera Black These bikes are in a gray area in many states as far as the law goes. It would not be considered an e-bike due to it's higher speed than allowed by e-bike definition. You could probably make the case that they are in the "motor driven bicycle" category, which is the same category as scooters and 49cc mopeds, although in many state laws those are defined in terms of cylinder displacement, which doesn't apply to an electric vehicle. The laws have some catching up to do.

    • @kingjamez80
      @kingjamez80  7 лет назад +1

      I'd start with something "smaller" than this. Check out endless-sphere.com thats where I learned most of the ebike specific stuff. The most important thing to understand is the batter management. The battery has a lot of energy and if not used correctly, it'll burn your bike and has happened all too often, your house with it. I started with a much less powerfull BBSHD mid-drive bike and then moved up to this one.

    • @kingjamez80
      @kingjamez80  7 лет назад +1

      The speed is the combination of the number of turns in the hub motor with the size of the wheel and the voltage of the battery pack. Getting the bike to actually sustain high speed requires power (Watts in this case) so the batteries, controller, and motor all have to be adequately sized.

    I have a HPC around 3000 watt thousand watt hub motor running off of a lyen speed controller at 100 volts and 16 ahr battery. I only get like 42 mph. I feel like I'm wasting the voltage. I want more speed but I'm not sure what the problem is caused by. I know its not the batteries because it says on the QS website that a QS motor goes 60 mph at 74 volts. It's either my motor or my controller. I'm truly not sure. I'm leaning towards the problem being my HPC motor.

    • @kingjamez80
      @kingjamez80  7 лет назад +1

      Couple of things you need to look at. The first in my mind is the battery. As speeds increase the power draw exponentially increases as well. If you are using 18650's and only 16ahr I'm almost certain that is your bottleneck. I'm using 20ah of LiPo that can handle discharging at 200 amps and I need that power to get to high speed. You also don't say what kind of wheel you have. Pairing the motor turns with the wheel diameter in conjunction with the voltage is the key to optimizing the power output of your motor.

    • @ronbrown8611
      @ronbrown8611 7 лет назад

      Jim McPherson I use 16 ahr lipos from.hobbyking same as your batteries. I can put them in parallel to make 100 volt 32 ahr or many combinations. ex. 100 volt 16 ahr. not sure if my moto is.the high speed winding. I think the lyen 12445 84 132 volt speed controller is outdated.

    • @ronbrown8611
      @ronbrown8611 7 лет назад

      Jim McPherson my batteries are 10 C rated more than enough. they're not the issue.

      @ABritInNY 6 лет назад +1

      John that's because your top speed is that much slower... 55kph sounds fast, but it's a joke compared to 60mph! The energy consumption requirements required to combat wind resistance above 25mph effectively mean you need to exponentially increase power every 5mph increase in speed

      No, I built it from individual parts sourced over several months of watching sales. The biggest piece was the frame which I bought on eBay. It's an Electric Enduro Bike (EEB) frame. Once I decided on a frame I could then make decisions on the motor, controller, and batteries. I designed all of the electronic controls (startup, mode selection, brake and turn signals) on an Arduino that is mounted inside the frame.

      Never. I’ve passed several. I’m not bothering anybody, and ride conservatively, they have no reason to give me a second look.

      Do you feel in danger when you're riding at near highway speeds? Would you actually consider riding this on the highway at 65 mph? Have you ever had close calls? What would you say is the difference between riding this 60 pound bike vs. a motorcycle which may be 400 pounds? Sorry for all the questions but I'm so intrigued.

    • @TheFootbaldd
      @TheFootbaldd 6 лет назад

      I don't know what his weighs, but mine is a lot more than 60lbs. I need to find a good scale to check it on, but probably twice that and change. I have 19" dot wheels and tires as well. The bike feels great at 50+. I got really unnerved about not having mirrors at speed, so I ordered a set today. I wouldn't ride interstate personally. I never rode street bikes, just dirt bikes myself. Compared to 125s and 250s, I am having a blast. Its a different feeling for sure.

    I'm sure if a major company invested in the mass production of the high powered lithium cell batteries for to make these bikes, the price to buy one could be affordable . I however can't really justify paying for such a fragile piece of machinery the amount for a really decent one for example $12.000 for an Electric Bike like The Stealth Bomber, but i would love to borrow one for a week to see if i would change my mind.

      No he is riding illegally and will eventually get busted. These bikes are the reason why they are cracking down on ebikes. If you want to motorcycle then register it otherwise follow the law.

      @cutty02 6 лет назад +1

      Look at the date moron. When I made my bike they were legal in California (1000watts up to 30mph on road) the law changed in 2016. You are blatantly and knowingly breaking the law.

    • @ronbrown8611
      @ronbrown8611 6 лет назад +1

      Cutler Cycles this guus in dc. Whats the law in cali? Theres a video of you riding recklessly on your channel. Whats the wattage of your bike? I find riding with common sense will never get you into trouble. Iv gone by cops for years. The rule is slow down, get to the side and start pedalling and they dont give a shit whether your bike is legal or not. If you have the moto seat then thats a ted flag but you can still get away with it. Keep the bicycle seat and ebikers will never get in trouble. If looks all beefy like a moyorcycle then your screwed.

    • @cutty02
      @cutty02 6 лет назад

      You can slow an pedal but it is still an illegal bike and should be registered as a motorcycle . There is not a video on my channel of me riding recklessly on the road or in an illegal manner. off road is different. My bike only had a 1000 watt motor so it was legal in California up until 2016. It was also limited to on an offroad configurations.

    • @MasterQuack14
      @MasterQuack14 7 лет назад +7

      Everyone who owns these also owns a car, therefore, they have already paid their road tax. They should get a tax REFUND as these bikes at 60-80 lbs don't put very much if any relative damage to roads long term compared to a motorcycle or even a car.

      I would happily register a powerful ebike like this and pay some reasonable yearly fee, but as of right now the government will not let me. It would not be hard to put DOT lights on a bike like this and have it be just as safe as the little 50cc scooters running around. Hell require a motorcycle license even, but give me a way to register these light fun little transporters.

    You can't do this in the uk... it's illegal to drive on the road with a bike

    • @saabuldin
      @saabuldin 6 лет назад

      protizemo s it's not illegal to ride bike on UK. Its only illegal if you ride anything bigger then 250w without pedal assist and if it goes more then 15.5 mph.

    • @dynamitrex3975
      @dynamitrex3975 6 лет назад +1

      I know, its just that you can't ride an ebike that has no setting for going at 15.5 mph max, even if you go slow. Its so not fair, you guys in the USA get to ride flying cars at 62 mph right now and scooters too, while all of us in the uk are stuck in 50cc dirt bikes and 15 mph ebikes. The uk is starting to have the status of an expensive jail

    • @helenHTID
      @helenHTID 6 лет назад

      +protizemo s The legal limit in US is 20MPH 750W. So this dude is illegal unless he has all the necessary paperwork

    • @MegaNayton
      @MegaNayton 5 лет назад +1

      I believe the way around it is it cant be more than 250w continuous so you can have a 1000w ebike but must not give out more than 250w when on the road and be limited to 15mph with pedal assist on it. Truthfully I've had a 1000w ebike for about a year now passed many cops and not ones given me a second glance its all about how you ride and as long as your not doing 30 plus with out even looking like your pedaling then that's where you'll get your self in crap

      Many authorities have excluded steam powered, electric motorcycles or diesel-powered two-wheelers from the definition of a 'motorcycle', and credit the Daimler Reitwagen as the world's first motorcycle. Given the rapid rise in use of electric motorcycles worldwide, defining only internal-combustion powered two-wheelers as 'motorcycles' is increasingly problematic. So... Clearly the definition needs to change.
