Magnus Carlsen playing at our university bar | Damien Ribière (2061) vs GM Magnus Carlsen (2864)

  • Full story:
    We (EPFL Chess club) organized a tournament before the Easter break, Thursday 14th April.
    At 22:00 when we left the club, we saw that the logistics manager of the club sent us a picture of him with Magnus Carlsen at UNIL Sorge (university of Lausanne) metro station 2 hours before. We thought that it was a joke, then one of the participants who left earlier asked if it was possible that the World Champion was the guy he saw at the bar.
    After rushing to this place (HC Tap House), we sat at the table next to Magnus and his friends, realizing it was real, and asked for a photo.
    Then the treasurer brought a chessboard from the club and played a friendly blitz game with Damien, the winner of the Easter tournament (FIDE 2061, lichess 2600). At the end of the game Magnus and one of his friends suddenly moved to our table and the world champion challenged Damien. The rest is history! Note: We cheered after 2.a3 because it is Damien's (@SuperHumeanism) favorite opening.

      @bobbwc7011 Год назад

      @@hoenircanute You guys speak like true laymen: clueless and pathetic. I completely agree with Karpow and Kasparow: The tournaments for the world title should be done in their 1980's mode again; play until a certain number of points/wins has been achieved, draws don't count. Yes, this could mean an insane number of games but in the end it would be very clear who the best player is beyond statistical variance. In the end it was very clear that Kasparow was better and not just due to statistic artefacts introduced by a limitation of the number of games or a Blitz tie breaker. That's all nonsense.
      Carlsen is in that regard simply not disciplined enough. In contrast to most other chess players he has a lot of money, he does not need to play to make a living anymore, he also hates the outlook that he would have to play another 10-15 years at top level to be recognised to be as good as Kasparow or Karpow in terms of overall achievements.
      His palmares in comparison to the "tournament winning machine" Karpow is fairly small, and he did not manage many of his other goals e.g. playing until he reaches 2900.
      Even his peak rating is not worth as much as Kasparow's 2851 because of the Elo inflation which was not a thing when Kasparow reigned.
      So he is in a very weird place of currently being the strongest yet not being all time top 3, not playing that many tournaments, yet also having a lack of competition at the moment.
      He has no financial incentive to play very hard anymore. He hates the hardsips of his sport because preparation etc. is tough. He cannot reach 2900, and most of his previously tough competitors like Aronjan have suffered from a "nose dive" in competitiveness; Aronjan stagnated and regressed from a clear strong no. 2 position, playing a style that was really a threat to Carlsen, but suddenly not being able to consistenly challenge Carlsen like he used to be. So, Carlsen also feels he has no interesting competition while at the same time he was very lucky to become world champion in the first place since he did not qualify for his first title match by his own gameplay. It was Iwantschuk who gave him that chance. He also showed repeatedly to have weak tournament phases which ties into his obvious discipline and motivation issues. And he is kind of right that the world title matches are too frequent and that there is no constant mode.
      So anyhow. He should quit chess altogether because his motivation is simply not right if he cannot cope with the harsh realities of his sport, the sport which made him very rich.

      “ELO inflation” read: chess is more
      competitive and higher quality yet Magnus is still number 1. And no, Magnus’ issue is not that he doesn’t want to play so many games - on Lex Fridman’s podcast, he said he’d prefer a format in which 100 games were played with as many as two games a day with an hour per player. He said that the number of games in the current format is too few and makes it harder to reliably determine the best player because chess tends to be a low scoring game.

      You gotta be kidding me. Kasparow literally introduced computer engines to chess and online databases, making the game accessible to millions of people more and making it compatible with the emerging internet. Kasparow is also the all time strongest player who was both controversial but also very supportive to chess players of all levels.
      Magnus is a chess champion of his time, and he also made a lot of money with stuff previous chess players had no access to. And because he has all that money and because he does not like the hardships of his own sport, he shows these weird behaviors and tendencies of lack of motivation, despising elements of the sports etc.
      Kasparow was in that regard a real product of the Soviet Union: Chess is tough, especially the preparation...deal with it, it's part of the sport if you want to be good.
      The same kind of "hard grind mentality" led to the fact that Kasparow and Carlsen parted ways after a year of working together with Carlsen's father saying that Kasparow was a too hard of a worker for Carlsen's mindset. However, in contrast, Kasparow never ever showed signs of demotivation or lack of intrinsic drive while Carlsen can be a real moody bitch with really bad phases in tournament chess...because he hates the hard grind. Well, you cannot have the cake and eat it.

And then you try to give him credit for internet chess? Fuck off lol youre clearly just a Magnus hater when he is the clear GOAT so you have to try to build up your boy with fake accomplishments like bringing internet chess and computer engines into chess which is made up bullshit. Magnus is the GOAT of GOATs and it will be even more clear in the future as he is still dominating

    • @PeterM64
      @PeterM64 2 года назад +1

      Rf5 Rxf5 exf5 Nd3 Ra8+ Kd7 Rg8 looks like enough to draw, then if Ra3/Re3 Rf8 , then if Ke7 probably Rf5, in that position black is stuck defending the f2 pawn with his knight , and white will be able to pressure the knight with his bishop wherever it defends the pawn so my conclusion is that’s a simple draw (although I calculated this without a board so I might have missed something)
