Add a layer of gel on the natural nail underneath to keep from lifting and you get to grow your nails really long. It also keeps them very clean. I've been doing this for many years and never have any problem with my gel overlay lifting.

You can , but it is going to take a lot longer since primer promotes a better adhesion with a natural nail plate .
