I just came here to say this lol. I relax since it feels easier to do, so since I’m not focusing as hard I’ll make more mistakes Using my dominant hand means I’m painting *and* trying to keep focused, while using my non dominant hand I only have to think about the nails (the focus comes with the difficulty)
I don't usually comment on videos but on the off chance you read this I wanted to say thank you, you've been an incredible teacher and a huge source of inspiration for me and so many others. ❤ Thank you!!
My left hand is paralyzed, so I do everything you let see. Except the gel, I put a layer on it in a quick way and take my very small brush and go over it in a precise way. My electric file hold I between the table and my left hand and go up and down It works very good. People can't believe I do it myself😊 And I like art 🙈 so sometimes I have to take a couple of hours for it but I do it myself💪 Thank you for all the lessons you give! Greetings from the Netherlands 💜
Today a nail tech told me I was smart for the request I made so that my natural nails wouldn’t be filed too much and therefore make them weak. I replied that I watched a lot of educational videos 😊 so I just want to say thank you for all the informational content you put up makes me feel confident to know what to ask for in order to take care my nails ! 💅
The moving your hand to file the non dom hand technique came natural to me decades ago. It just “happened” and it never occurred to me until I was watching RUclips vids of nail techs and heard the tip that I realised it was how I’d always done it. It just “feels right”, it’s not something I ever have to think about doing, and I don’t remember any point in time where I had an “oh, maybe if I try it this way” moment. There was never a conscious effort to try it that way. I feel like many people who do their nails often probably adapted in the same way without it being something they had to be taught. Because the dom hand is the one with more control and used more, the brain probably puts it on auto pilot 🤣
My tip isn’t for polish but I’ve created a quick little hack to help myself put extensions on myself using my non dominant hand. I place your forms on my nails then use a straight dual form tip, (not a full dual form, it’s just to create the tip) fill that with hybrid gel and place on your nail on top of the form. Keeps it straight and makes for much less filing for me anyways. Also don’t get a bumpy underside! Win win!
I have been doing my own nails for a couple of years now. I started with regular polish (which I highly recommend doing) and advanced to gel polish with a rubber base overlay. I have found that practice makes perfect with my non-dominant hand. I have used some tips like these, such as using my dominant hand as the one that's moving, making sure that both my hands are stabilized by touching something on something as I work, but mainly, just plain old practice. I'm to the point where mostly my non-dominant hand is the one that's doing the work, the hardest thing for me has been the e-file. Despite me being very careful, in the beginning, I overfiled in spots on my dominant hand. I have never overfiled my other hand, so that told me it was a control issue. Now I'm more conservative sbout using the e-file on that hand, I get to a certian point and switch to a hand file, which is much more forgiving. The difference between dark and light colors, as Suzi mentions here, is pretty big. Darker colors show every imperfection. I dont use deeper colors as much, but when I do, I use a similar technique where I use the polish brush to get close to my skin, but still leave a margin. I try to make that margin very even. It's more difficult than the technique I use for light colors, which is to take a tiny brush and get right up close to the skin. I also do that with my rubber base, so regardless of the color, the nail is well covered
I just tried implementing a few of these techniques on my opposite hand and they helped a ton! thank you so much for this video. I actually used it on both of my hands because I can get really shaky hands and some arm weakness due to chronic illnesses, these have helped me so much to just keep more independence as it gets a bit tougher as I age. Thank you for your educational videos that help me improve as a personal nail "artist"
I would like to just say: for those of us who have horrible latex allergies & can't use MANY of these products; I STILL watch the applications because well why not🤷♀️ knowledge is power💯
'Be Mine' is a beautiful color, I'm totally going to order it!! I've learned to use the exact same motions with my opposite hand as I do with the dominant one and its gotten to where it doesn't feel so foreign anymore. Practice, practice, practice! 😊
@@NailCareerEducation i would also love an indepth video on different removel methods of gel! I have tried diff methods like acetone with clamp covers, but i find it feels cold and uncomfortable. I tried acetone steamers which is great and is warm but hits higher on the finger so dries out the knuckles. Im going to try gel removal that looks like nail polish but i hear its just paint remover in a bottle?? We need your guidance! ❤
Outstanding video. I got really hard and heavy into gel polish and now also sculptured gel nails, back in August, and this video was very instructive -- though I'm getting more practiced and less shaky while working on my dominant (right) hand with my non-dominant (left) hand, it's always good to get more tips on doing it better! One thing I learned somewhere on RUclips, might even have been this channel, is to do all the work on the right (dominant) with the left (non-dominant) first, just because it's more challenging and time-consuming; once I can start working on my left with my right, it goes much faster. But I usually do my thumbs first, usually the left thumb first; it's the easiest by far to work on, and it's a much longer, bigger nail, which lets me see the new color/effect on a bigger "canvas." Both my thumbs have hard gel overlays; the left just because I test stuff on it very frequently, so the hard gel helps protect my natural nail; the right thumbnail has a very distressing split if the free edge gets more than an eighth-inch long, but the hard gel keeps it intact. Any suggestions on fitting a nail extension form on pinkies? I can never get the dang thing to stay on! I recently got some smaller forms, so maybe the bigger ones are just too heavy for that small, narrow nail. We'll see! I just got the most gorgeous "swimming pool blue" shade, and some luminous hot pink should be here later this week, so I can do a nice ombre with the two electric colors. 😊 So I'll be trying those smaller forms, once I get the current color and product off!
You are such a great explainer as you tell us how to do our OWN nails. I can do a client's nails great if its gel or regular polish (I'm a beginner), but doing my own nails is so frustrating and I can't do my dominant hand (accurately) to save my life. Thank you, You beautiful, amazing, sweet woman! 💖💝💖💖💝💖💝💖💝💖💝💖💝💖💝💖💝💖💝💖💝
I basically trained my non-dominant hand by using the same trick you did with the file when applying polish. Hold the off hand steady and have, in my case, the right hand pull along the brush. Then i worked up to having both hands move together (with hands steady on a surface), until the off hand got the hang of the motion, then i could plant the right hand and paint with the left.
Hi Suzie! This was a great tutorial, thank you 🙌🏻 I was wondering if, at some point, you might think of doing a brush care video? I’m always ending up with rock hard brushes and can’t figure out how best to manage them in the time between doing new sets on myself 🙁
I just want to thank you so much for your videos. You’ve been my favorite and have really inspired me. I’m finally going to make the jump and go to school to do nails.
Excellent tips!!! As I find myself moving the finger along the file. It really helps with accuracy. Great Grape color, too. Last night I did mine and had to do three on the right hand over - which meant the left hand had to dry..... But they came out good deep forest green 👍🏼
This is a wonderful video. I do my own nails with normal nail polish, however my mom prefers gel and she bought a lot of gel polish and a lamp and now I do her nails with gel and I have no idea what I'm doing lol! I learned so much from this video. The next time I do my mom's nails they are gonna look so much better! thank you!
This was incredibly helpful thank uou so very much!!! But can u advise us begginers on reg nail polish. Why every time i swipe i see streaks and too thick parts and i keep going over but it seems to get worse.
I have learnt so much, and corrected some really bad habits, by watching your videos I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to post them. I only use hard gel on my natural nails but I’m going to try your naturally fake ombré pink, when I put in my next order. Could you please explain the difference between your monomer and the alcohol liquids you use.sorry if you’ve covered this before but I can’t find it.
Susie, could you do a video on magnetic polish? I love the way it looks, but struggle to control the design. I have seen tools online that claim to make designs with a magnet, but they have poor reviews. Hope you are healing up quickly, Cameraman!
Can you do a video.. for when a nail is uneven. For example i had stable into a shop the nail tech did a good job on shaping, polishing & design. However a couple days after i noticed my thumb (right) oh i asked for tapper square. So my thumb is not matching my left nail. Its wide how can you fix it without ruining the polish/ design. I think she just forgot she didn’t do my thumb.
Help! I have a STRONG natural C curve to all of my nails except my thumbs, and any time I grow them out past just barely over my fingertips, they start curling. I love having shorter mid-length nails, and have been using builder gel to strengthen my natural nails, but I’m so self conscious! They feel like your typical “granny” nails that you see on older ladies toes, even though they’re nowhere near that point. Any tips or tricks on how to make them less curled looking? Or am I destined to have short nails/use fake tips for length 😭
The hardest for me is the pinky on my right hand. I wouldn't say that my right is my dominant hand because (I think) my left hand is the same as my right--both "awkward" hands 😅
I think if a person is a DIY I get it. But if you’re having a professional performance this way, then they’re not professional. If you were continuing to do this, it’s over exposure of the uncured product to the skin if you’re doing it with gel polish. This could lead to allergies, which was not a good idea.

The best way is ACETONE! It takes longer than filing but if you don’t scrape the last bits off it the most gentle on your nails
