My theory is that String helped Bunny put away all the Westside players that the Barksdale organization were fighting during Avon's rise to power. Essentially it's a similar situation to the real life case of Whitey Bulger, a mob boss who was an informant for the FBI and helped them arrest his rivals in exchange for his gang being overlooked by the authorities. I think it makes sense only because String is a dirty player of the game and has shown he's willing to do whatever it takes to win. Also, String and Bunny both want to limit the violence of the game.
