What are some of your favourite albums from the 80s? Share below!
Rush - Power Windows
The Fixx - Reach the Beach
John Martyn - Grace and Danger
Peter Gabriel - So
Bleach was released in the 80s, so that. Although, there was a lot of other good stuff released then, including myself in '85!
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms
Peter Gabriel - So
Harold Budd - The Pearl
Talk Talk - The Colour of Spring
I absolutely love every album Roxy ever did, but "Phantoms" by The Fixx is another amazing 80s album!!!
@@CraigHollabaugh Great taste sir.
The 2 minute instrumental at the end of "More Than This" is one of the greatest pieces of music ever recorded
Very well said!
It is truly wonderful to come across people who get it, those who appreciate the pure magic of this recording. Best wishes, Sam
@@samthomas6093 thanks ever so much!
YES the 2 minute piece is like angels descending.. INDIA is my FAVE TRACK
In Roxy and solo, Bryan Ferry is a true original. I think he is hugely underrated as a songwriter-he has a unique voice, literally and artistically. Legend.
Very well said!
Hardly underated though!
Agree!
Yes. I think the difference between Ferry and say, Dylan ( who Ferry describes as his idol) and say Leonard Cohen, is that Ferry very much wrote as a man of his specific time; he recognized and wrote in the current popular culture. As such, his songs are powerful and poetic documents of his time, while it could be said the Dylan and Cohen wrote for all time.
Ferry has more in common with another great poet, Joni Mitchell. This all said, I include Ferry in my top 5 pop song writers and hey, that voice!
Roxy Music has outlasted the critics and the naysayers, they are all legends and worthy of the praise.
Very well said!
How Bob Clearmountain, in his tender twenties, was able to rock the music world to such a degree is phenomenal. He really is a wizard, yet with such command, he is one of the most soft spoken, unassuming people you could ever hope to meet.
Avalon wasn’t so much an album but a mood and a moment in time. So beautiful and powerful. The song More than This is one of the greatest songs ever-always takes me to another place.
Thanks ever so much for sharing
Absolutely
This record sounds like it could have been made yesterday, it was that ahead of its time. One of my top 5 of all time and simply amazing.
Agreed 100%!!
I am so pleased to see Roxy Music Avalon on Produce like a pro! It is an amazing album and still sounds so good- there really is nothing dated about this album which says so much about the songs and the production. My mom played this record right when it came out and the memories of hearing it during that time are unforgettable! I love it, thank you so much for sharing this with us!
@@cozmicpfunk thanks ever so much! Glad you enjoyed the video
Avalon was conceived on the ŵest coast of. Ireland which is loughCorrib which is in Galway I’m from very near the city Lucy Helmore RIP whose father obviously came from there. One of Bryan’s sones trained with the Galway Blazers which is to do with horses
Avalon is a masterpiece both musically and technically
Agreed 100%!
I bought this album in 2018 at a Value store after noticing how intriguing the cover was. Read a little bit of the info on the back and saw it was made in 82. I figured I'll just put myself in the context of that year and see how it goes. Heard the first track and immediately recognized it so I was pleasantly surprised, but what happens when you continue listening to the entire album is hard to describe. It is spiritual and timeless, you are left feeling a thousand years wiser. It truly is, as they say, a masterpiece.
“More Than This” is one of my favorite songs.
Appreciate the backstory!
Thanks ever so much
My favorite album. The production is immaculate and the album never loses a step when it comes to writing and performance.
Agreed an absolute masterpiece
Bob’s mixing is superb
Unlike many albums of its time (1982) Roxy Music reached its pinnacle with Avalon. The record can only be described as an unrepeated masterpiece that remains timeless 40 years later.
The album is so clean. Nothing clashes... the synth's really mesh. Masterpiece.
Thanks ever so much! Agreed 100%!
Warren, I've listened to Avalon probably 500+ times over the years. Your production contacts add real depth to your stories, the 75 foot stairwell reverb discussion was fascinating. You didn't mention that Playboy ranked Avalon as the "Best Makeout Album of the all time". Well, that was the rumor back then.
That was no rumor. And it wasn't the men who made it that way. Women were more than ready to admit they were all aboard with the record on in the background. I won't say
it seduced women on its own, but if you had a girlfriend, it was a great album to take a journey with.
@@foto21 Thanks for the confirmation.
Wow! Thanks ever so much Craig! I really appreciate it
@@CraigHollabaugh haha I should have used it with my early girlfriends! Duh! I missed out on that one haha
@@foto21 haha thanks for sharing!
It remains an amazing album, zillions of listens down the road. Timeless. Manzanera’s playing is sublime. The ensemble, a masterpiece. Thanks for covering this favorite. 🙏🏼
He knew when to play a note and when to have a silent beat, so wonderful to listen to.
I have been a Roxy fan since the git go, the first album for me is the one I listen to most. The power of the music with it's edge still thrills me to this day. I am very critical of all my hero's, but I've never been disappointed with Roxy or Ferry as a solo artist. There's is a body of work that will last as long as people listen to good quality music.
Flesh and Blood was a beautifully subversive record which is criminally underrated. While I was a fan of the earlier albums, the final two were incomparable.
Thanks ever so much for sharing
Flesh and Blood id say has some of Roxys best songs, but also some of their worse. Still most of it is amazing and some songs like Running Wild are criminally underrated.
I LOVED Avalon, but also Rio from Duran Duran and anything from The Psychedelic Furs, INXS, and U2, and, well, almost everything else from the '80s. 😃😎🎶🎹🎸🎤🥁 Being a teenager in the '80s was fantastic!
Same here!
Amen! :)
Great taste in music. Those are some of my favorite bands as well.
Avalon was (and still is) a fabulous album. It has aged quite well. The musicianship on the entire album is stellar.
My no.1 favourite album, always has been and probably always will be. Never tired of listening to it, despite the 4 decades which have passed since buying it in 1982. Steely Dan's "Aja" and "Hotel California" by The Eagles vie for my 2nd and 3rd place.
So you enjoy sophisticated pop.
This is the best Roxy history that I've seen. Thank you!
Wow, thank you!
The bassist in the promo video clip to 'Avalon' is The Cure's original bass player Michael Dempsey, by the way! 😀 He never actually recorded any bass tracks for Roxy Music, though 🙂
Yes! Indeed!
Do you know who’s the drummer in the promo video by any chance?
@@felinesandflowers - Could be Dave Mattacks, but I'm not sure. It's definitely _not_ Andy Newmark, who's actually playing on the recording.
"Released 40 years ago, Avalon..." - how to make someone feel old! Great video as always.
Haha I hear you!
I remember when I first played the CD in my recording studio. Better said, the song "Avalon". LOUD. When I heard the tape hiss in the very beginning, I smiled. Obviously it was recorded hi speed without Dolby, and Clearmountain did not want to hide that analogue hiss....And then the percussion and drum presence showed why. Avalon became the new calibration "meter" for the big studio monitors in many studios I bet. And Neil Jason on bass... what a underrated monster.
Avalon was a masterpiece. So well recorded and mixed by Bob Clearmountain and Rhett Davies. All their music was such a big influence on me. So romantic, fun, sexy and haunting. Great video Warren!
Very well said!
Honestly Avalon is the ultimate album of all time. I've heard nothing better.
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
40 years ago, heavens that makes me feel old.....One of my favourite albums ever, thanks for this great vid.
A great tribute to an incredible album & band. Roxy in all their incarnations/periods were artists in the true sense of the word. They were expressing ideas, trying new things, not sticking to the accepted ways of doing things and the results were amazing. Really brilliant musicians. The engineering also stands out for the quality that complimented the music.
I saw Ferry in I think 87 in Germany. Absolutely loved it. When they did Avalon and Yanick Étienne sang her part she just kind of slipped onto the stage from behind the curtain. You could hear her before you could see her. Absolutely incredible voice. Crystal clear and powerful. Really made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Sadly she died March this year aged 64.
Thanks for this video Warren, Roxy are a real fave of mine for many years!
P.S. That part of the UK, the north east, has produced some incredible artists. Here's a short list:
Bryan Ferry, Sting, Mark Knopfler, Brian Johnson, David Coverdale, Eric Burdon, Paul Rodgers, Chris Rea and Trevor Horn. All within a radius of 100 miles or so!
I once spent an evening with Bryan Ferry and he was one of the COOLEST guys I have ever met! He defined the word COOL. How he moved, how he was dressed, how he dealt with other people... HE WAS COOL!
Manzanera's "Diamond Head" is one of my favorite albums.... One of the hottest live albums is IMHO, "801 LIVE". Simon Phillips drums kick butt!!
Thanks ever so much! Yes, Simon Phillips is amazing!
I was 8 years old when the album came out and I remember being in a trance whenever More than this or Avalon played on the radio. I still listen regularly to the whole album on vinyl, cd or dsd. I can't get enough of the silky smooth spacious gorgeous sound of this record. For me it's one of the top 5 best sounding records ever made.
Absolutely one of my favorite groups of all time. Every decade they have dominated and changed the course of musical history. Avalon is without a doubt the most beautiful album ever made.
Avalon is just pure listening pleasure. One of the greatest albums ever.
Andy Newmark is a genius drummer. Feel for days!
Agreed 100%! I really appreciate it
I'm 52 and I have Flesh & Blood and Avalon on CD. Also have Avalon on SACD. Both great studio albums. Reminds me of my late father who I caught my love for hifi. He'd play these on vinyl. Such a warm and smooth sound.
The SACD with the 5.1 multi-channel mix is the ducks nuts!
The first 2 albums will always be my favorites; but Avalon is my fave post-Eno Roxy LP. Just a titanic achievement.
Absolutly true.
Thanks ever so much Vince!
@@ulfsvensson9710 absolutely!
Any time Roxy came out with an album from Manifesto ,flesh n blood ,
Plus Avalon. I was out there to get it anything from both the group & Bryan. Today I I have ordered the concert Album from 2001 on vinyl plus key ring n the 2022 programme which I will have in a few days 😂😂❤❤❤❤❤
Bravo...Davies and Clearmountain deserve an award as does Roxy...still a high water mark in production...second only to Steely Dan/ Fagen albums
Thanks ever so much! Yes, masterpiece
"Dance Away" bass line: divine. And one I'd like to have come up with...
Avalon was the first time I had discovered an album that resonated so much with my personal tastes, and was in my opinion from top to bottom a masterpiece. Every freaking track was a pleasure. It seemed to me like a guilty pleasure because I knew of no one who was in to the album like I was. Time has vindicated my judgment of the album as a masterpiece. It stands alone in my opinion as there is nothing else remotely like it. Roxy Music was indeed a legendary trailblazer in music.
An absolute masterpiece. Funny story, I grew up in the US and the first time I heard Avalon was oddly enough when the United States (with firey John McEnroe!) went down to Argentina to play Davis Cup team tennis and ESPN chose "More than this" - the instrumental version! - to play going into the commercial breaks. I thought man that's beautiful, what is this stuff? the rest is history, I was smitten. Thanks RM for all the great music.
Roxy Music is an incredible band and Avalon is their crowning achievement
Absolutely not, R U kidding me?
Going to TRY to be short and sweet, Roxy Music were 100% INGENIUS. New Wave and Europop wouldn't exist without them. They didn't sound like anyone else and there will NEVER be another band like them.
Bowie influenced Roxy
Roxy and Bryan Ferry solo music is BRILLIANT!!!! the greatest artists of this time hands down.....fabulous!
Masterpiece from start to finish .So moody I always just go into a state of calm when I listen to it .
It's a Freakin' Masterpiece!
Agreed 100% Brian!
Please don't say "40 years ago". Great album, been listening to some tracks recently. Still sounds fresh, slick, sleek, smooth, intricate. Love Manzenera. Very underrated guitarist. The more you listen, the more you hear him & his influence on their sound. Ferry seemed to use Neil Hubbard to add the same elements on Girls & Boys. A very Roxy sounding solo album.
Thank you so much for this carefully assembled, comprehensive analysis of what makes Roxy Music such a singular musical entity. To create a legacy of two completely different styles that still sound brand new is a magic trick no other band has ever done - and never will. I feel blessed to have seen them live in both iterations, and I am thrilled beyond words to get the chance to see them again for their 50th Anniversary show! Much appreciation for acknowledging their enormous impact on modern music. They've provided the soundtrack to most of my life - and that's absolutely, indescribably wonderful.
Siren is one of my favorite albums of all time. "Sentimental Fool," "End of the Line," and "Could It Happen to Me?" remain on my playlist to this day. Sophisticated, stunning, and superb.
Thank you for this piece about my most faved album. If I could take only one album to the island, this would be it. And "Main thing" is my personal cherry on top.
Thanks ever so much for sharing
I was 10 years old in 1982 when my Dad bought Avalon for me. It was my first vinyl record and it changed my life and it changed the way I heard and listened to music. I absolutely cherish this recording and those songs. This video was great. It had all the meaningful details about the band and productionI I would want to know. Warren would make an epic college music production professor. I learned so much, thank you.
Love your rant about out of step critics. Avalon is one of my all-time favourites. I clearly remember listening to the title track Avalon played very loud in an empty club, a few days after my daughter was born. It sent shivers down my spine. As you started Warren it is and will always be an Roxy's all-time magnus opus.
Avalon is still in a regular rotation on my playlists...
So, an album that opens with "More Than This" and contains "Avalon" plus many other incredible tracks stalls at number 53 in America? This is why we can't have nice things.
Newmark's playing on More Than This is perfect. Perfect, and I don't say that lightly. One of my all-time best drum tracks.
Agreed 100%!
"Avalon" is the definition of smooth and stylistic. So cool that it seems effortless.
Avalon is such a beautiful, darkly romantic masterpiece. An album I never tire of. The writing, production, arrangement and performances are timeless and perfect.
I had the chance to see Bryan Ferry live when he was touring the (monumental) album “Boys and Girls”. Very charismatic and classy performer. Thanks for paying tribute to Avalon, a true rock masterpiece.
Thanks ever so much Daniel!
.... but there was no tour for 'Boys and Girls' .... his first tour after Roxy split in 83 was the Bete Noir tour 88-89 ;)
@@TheJoaquimdossantos You’re absolutely right. It was the Bête Noire Tour indeed. Great show!
This reminds me I haven't watched "9/12 weeks" in a long time ("Slave to Love" is part of soundtrack). Also fun fact: the piano song at the end, an original composition, wasn't included in the official OST album. Even these days people are looking for it and can only be found as mixed parts from the scene when it's played.
For me Avalon is one of the greatest albums of my lifetime.........
Agreed 100%! Thanks ever so much!
One of my claims to fame is seeing Roxy Music on this tour at the Tower Theater in ‘83. I believe I was 10th row and I have pictures. Bryan Ferry is so suave that even James Bond says “damn, dude!”
Hey! I was sitting about where you were at the Tower in Philly. Do you know me?
Roxy is one of the greatest bands of all time!
Thanks ever so much for sharing
Great video and timeline! A friend turned me on to Roxy's first album and I've been a fan ever since. I was fortunate to see them in Cleveland when they toured in support of the Country Life album. They opened with Prairie Rose, and as the intro built up, Bryan Ferry calmly sauntered out stage right in a sequined evening jacket, as if he knew the exact number of steps required to get to center stage without hurrying. At the crescendo of "Texas" he was spot on at the mic with "Oh, that's where I belong it seems to me...". Great show, the band was tight, and every time I hear Prairie Rose now I re-see that cool, silky smooth entrance.
They're still underrated!
I used to listen to my dad's vast LP collection when I was a kid growing up in the 70s & 80s, and I remember with fondness listening to his Roxy Music albums. Do The Strand and Virginia Plain were 2 of my favourite songs, but the Manifesto was the Roxy Music album I listened to the most, and the songs Dance Away and Angel Eyes were great in my eyes 👍
Im a Metal Head yet i have always worshipped Avalon. I cant even remember how i came upon it, but it is without question THE greatest sex album of all time!
Thanks ever so much Jack!
Superbly produced album. It dawned on me after a while that a lot of the 'keyboards' I was hearing were actually Phil Manzanera's guitars. So many little details.
It's definitely and album for Manzanera fans.
Eno ran them through the EMS Synthia after all
@@Reprodestruxion I don't think Eno was involved with this album.
@@slowmarchingband1 oh I thought you meant throughout their career
@@Reprodestruxion Eno was in Roxy Music for 2 years..
What an awesome video and an awesome album. I have been lucky to have seen Roxy Music several times and have been blown away every time.
Oh boy - an important album! Thanks, Warren. Will enjoy this thoroughly I know.
Thanks, Lee
This album really is one of the best of all time.
Agreed!
My Avalon SACD is filed in the “pry from my cold dead hands” section of my music collection. Saw Roxy on that 1982 tour, great concert from one of the few bands that could make a hockey rink sound alive.
How timely! I’ll be going to Toronto for the Roxy Music show with the original lineup (minus Eno) on Sept.7, where they are kicking off their world tour. Probably their last tour, I think. The night before, it’s Bauhaus, same situation, original line-up, last tour.
Bauhaus, really 😳?
ahh man, Bauhaus. sounds amazing to see both. cant believe i didnt get it together to see them on this (probably last) tour :( but good thing peter murphy will alllways exist.
@@FunkATeer-qk7hq i know right?? they played in the us a little... super hard to hear about these things beforethey sell out and spendy !
Don't forget that the late Graham Simpson on bass was part of the original line up.
Avalon! My favorite Album!
Masterpiece!
Good stuff! Talking Heads' "Remain in Light" is right up there with "Avalon" for two of the most important 'musical high art' recordings of the Eighties.
The “White Duke” phase of Bowie was obviously a huge influence on the band’s evolution and interestingly had a remarkably similar influence on the band Japan’s transformation as well; “Obscure Alternatives” to “Quiet Life” is two completely different sounds
What a great video with almost 30 minutes filled with lots of information and inspiration!!
One of my favorite albums of all time! Thanks a lot for this Warren!!
Thank you Warren. This is a brilliant video to serve as an introduction for anyone who's yet to discover this joyous album.
The refined, studied sound of this album, that influenced so many of the new wave bands of my childhood, is being sung by a guy that's right at the same point in his life as I am now. It resonates more than ever, right now.
I really appreciate the unscripted honesty of your words at the end. Cheers for a great video, about a wonderful album.
Still one of my favorite albums ever, and this was a fantastic review. I particularly loved your off the script comments at the end!
Thanks ever so much!!
As a Norwegian super fan from day1 in -72 I was extremely proud when Avalon made 15 times top spot in -82 here in Norway🤠❤️💃🎶🇳🇴
Man, this is a brilliant video. So enjoyable and inspirational and great for a bloke of my age to reminisce about all Those great albums. And Avalon in particular of course. I still often listen to it to this day and still use it as a reference.
Thanks so much for this. You have no idea how much I appreciate it being talked about in depth. 🙏🏻 🙏🏻🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Not just thank you to Roxy for making such great music, thank you Warren for producing a wonderful account of the bands history.
I thought I knew music but this opened my eyes to who was in the band and how it was put together, especially the technique of fitting in lyrics to phonetic phrases!
Cheers !!
I remember dancing to More Than This on repeat for 3 hours straight back in the mid 80’s. Such a fantastic song and album. Thanks for helping to keep great music alive and bringing it to people who may not know it!
Thank you. Avalon first single record purchased with pocket money in 1982. Still have the single in vinyl collection
Amazing, eloquent, comprehensive rundown on not only Avalon but Roxy Music as well. So interesting to get the production background on this masterpiece. Great, great video, thank you!!
Thanks ever so much Adrian!
Take A Chance With Me. One of the greatest choruses ever!
Marvellous!
Good to see this video! I discovered this band watching an old movie: lost in translation. And researching I recognized several good songs that I didn't remember. thanks for this video
Despite being over ten years older than me, this remains one of my favourite albums. Thank you for the video!
Thanks ever so much Lewis
Great, great video mate! Really enjoyable - one of your best.
I bought Roxy Music's first album when it came out and to this day it's one of my fave albums and to my ears the best, freshest and most original debut album ever. To me they weren't quite the same after Eno left and Roxy version 2 didn't really connect with me, the songwriting didn't engage me in the same way - but Avalon caught my ear with its astonishing production and sound. A huge influence on the music of the '80s. This was around the time when I started noticing the name Bob Clearmountain on all the best-sounding records coming out . . . great video, thanks Warren!
You’re absolutely right.
If you listen to Stop Making Sense with closed eyes, there are passages where you could well be listening to Roxy Music.
They ‘drank’ more from that fountain than meets the eye. At least mine lol.
Thanks ever so much!
What a coincidence, picked this album back up after a long while like a week ago when I heard More Than This on the radio.
Absolute classic album, has a nice melancholic feel to it
Glad to see this. I’m digging the breakdowns of all the unsung classics. I love all Roxy Music. Thanks
Thanks ever so much! Glad you like them!
Thank you. I loved Roxy Music, but had NO idea about the earlier versions of the band and Brian Eno's influence. The phonetic lyric approach and the hiring of the wonderful singer in the next room are great stories and validate those techniques which I have found useful myself. Great !
A brilliant presentation Warren, really enjoyed it. I was one of the lucky ones who got to see the Avalon tour. I remember how atmospheric it all was, with stage props, palm trees and such. My buddy was importing Melody Maker from overseas so he was up on all the Roxy music news and releases which made me aware as well...801 live as you mentioned.
Great video on the history and insights on the band and this amazing album! I just saw the 50th Anniversary Tour in Toronto and it was fantastic! 20 awesome songs even at their age! Thanks.
I have been waiting for this episode! Love this album. Perfect front to back
Thanks ever so much!
This was an extraordinarily brilliant piece to watch, I loved every minute of it. I loved your passion at the end but above all the analysis and compilation throughout was second to none. You are invited to sit at my dinner table with my favourite raconteurs any time!
I remember Roxy Music were always on Top of the Pops, but this track definitely got my ears twitching.
Wore the vinyl out, tried to on the CD, and paid the obscene price of $180 for a 5.1 remix of this masterpiece. Top 5 of all Time, for sure.
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
incredibly well-produced album. perfect headphones music. thank you roxy music for avalon.
Thanks ever so much for sharing
Fascinating Warren thank you ❤ Masterpiece for sure, still sounds like it comes from another dimension, and so appreciated hearing bits of the history and composing process (also interesting about the 'accidental' presence of Yanick Etienne, especially after the recent post about Oleta Adams and Woman in Chains). Agree about the two incarnations but if you hear them live it is definitely one band -- the DVD of their performance at the Hammersmith Apollo is a pinnacle -- I don't think there is any music more subversive in the world :)
