Bryan Ferry authored the entire New Romantic movement of the early & mid 80s. He is criminally underrated. So glad to see PoR give him his due.

Agreed. I'm no expert but the music really grabbed me back in the day. Thanks for covering it PoR, that review makes me feel good about my taste in music. I'm sorta baffled that Rick Beato hasn't done an episode. Just proves the point of how underrated they are. Love the mention of the greats joining in on Avalon. Brian's a cool cat for sure.

A beautiful tribute to Bryan Ferry & Roxy Music. More Than This will always hold a special place in my heart, it stopped me from committing suicide at the age of 14. Granted it was the 10,000 Maniacs cover that saved me, but the lyrics were just so poetic, that it made me realized that I still had a lot more to live for and there is more songs for me to discover and explore. I finally heard the Roxy Music version a couple of years later while playing bass at a recording session for this man and wife group, and they gave me their cassette copy of the Street Life compilation. I've since bought all of Bryan's and Roxy's albums on vinyl and cd, and he truly influenced me a lot in my songwriting and compositions.

Bryan Ferry is my all time FAVORITE! I’ve been a fan since 1974. I was lucky to see Roxy Music in the late 70’s at the Rainbow Music Hall in Denver. I had a front row seat! Then, I got to see Bryan at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center in the late 90’s. I truly love him!❤️ My favorite song is Windswept. So beautiful. Love the saxophone! 💋

I was lucky enough to see him on his most recent tour in 2019, where he played all of Avalon. Not in the typical corny front-to-back way that other artist do, but interspersed among his solo stuff and older, deep cut Roxy tunes. He was truly amazing.

I learned about Roxy Music in high school during the '80s wave of the British Invasion. Didn't hear much of the band or Bryan solo until I was in college. A gal I knew loved Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry. It wasn't until a decade or two after undergrad school, however, when I got to regularly listen to "Avalon," "Love Is the Drug" and "Virginia Plain," that I became a bona fide fan. Love Me Madly Again - a thrilling ride between hard raunchy rock and the finest orchestral textures 2. Another Place, Another Time - also a thrilling ride that reaches something very ethereal 3. This Is Tomorrow (calling) - a hard rocker 4. Sign of the Times - another rocker 5. Don't Stop The Dance - haunting song that still gives me chills. Other than that his covers albums are just beyond amazing. Best Roxy Music songs is hard but 1 per album is the only way I can narrow it down. 1. Ladytron 2. In Every Dream Home A Heartache 3. Mother of Pearl 4. Bitter-Sweet 5. She Sells 6. Manifesto 7. Same Old Scene 8. The Main Thing

You can't choose wrong with Roxy/Ferry but your choices are mostly culled from the smooth, lush, romantic pop period, leaving out the early brilliant art rock and barely touching on the mid-period proto-new wave. The Roxy/Ferry story can't be told without Remake/Remodel, Mother of Pearl, Do The Strand, Editions of You, Virginia Plain, Casanova, Street Life, Same Old Scene, and In Every Dream Home a Heartache. By itself, Ferry's voice is a grand instrument but mixed with Eno's out-there treatments, Manzanera's art-flamenco leads, a world class rock rhythm section, singular style and album covers - Roxy might be modern music's greatest gift.

Agreed and well stated. For those that may turned off by the later smother and "pop" sounding Roxy Music, I would encourage you to listen to the first 4 albums. As soon as I saw the title I knew who it was! The word elegant describes him perfectly! My introduction to Bryan Ferry was the album Let's Stick Together. I found him to be a smoother David Bowie at the time.Even though they are contemporaries. Roxy Music's Flesh & Blood and Avalon are my favorite Roxy Music albums. Their influence on Duran Duran's epic album Rio is obvious. As well as D2"s attire in many of their photo sessions. The Right Stuff, Over You, Don't Stop The Dance, Kiss & Tell, and Avalon. My two honorable mentions are covers he recorded: Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? and his phenomenal version of Van Morrison's Crazy Love. To see him live in 1988 was great. It was outdoors as lightning flashes occurred. It never rained but it made that show more special. Mother Nature added to the effects of the show.

When you mentioned Neil Hubbard's guitar solo in the last part of "Slave to Love", you forgot to mention Keith Scott's amazing guitar solo that propels the song. Luther Vandross did contribute backing vocals to "My Little Girl" on Roxy Music's Manifesto LP. I remember seeing Bryan Ferry perform at the Pantages Theatre back in 1994 in support of Mamouna. He opened up with "I Put a Spell on You" and it was funk master David Williams on guitar on that stage along with Steve Ferrone on drums, and Neil Hubbard and Chester Kamen on guitar. When Ferry came out and sang the words, "I put a spell on you", he waved his hand and red glitter came out and it was the coolest. He is definitely the Sultan of Suave.

Thanks for doing an episode on Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music. I love that music almost as much as I love the Beatles. In fact, I understand it is a fairly common opinion in the British music press that Roxy Music was the second-most influential band to ever come out of the UK (after the Beatles).
Similarly, trying to pick five favorite Roxy/Ferry songs is a daunting task because their catalog is so diverse and so excellent. Comparing "For Your Pleasure" to "Country Life" or "Avalon" is like comparing "Meet The Beatles" to "Rubber Soul" to The White Album.
It is difficult for most Americans to understand how pivotal and influential ROXY was since they never made much of a commercial impact here in the USA.
I wish more people knew about Roxy's early albums and knew about their reputation as an incredible live band.
It's a shame that every American isn't as familiar with "Virginia Plain" as they are with T-Rex's "Bang a Gong"

The song "If There Is Something" Has become my all time Roxy favorite. It wasn't until I watched the movie "Flashbacks of a Fool", that I heard the song for the first time. I had liked Brian Ferry over the years, mostly for his later music such from his Avalon years but I was never crazy for him. Then I saw the movie, "Flashbacks of a Fool". I began researching his earlier stuff. I was blown away with some of the earlier Roxy Music music. Here in the USA; we never got to hear any of the early stuff; at least I hadn't. If There Is Something, Out of the Blue and Mother of Pearl are a few of my favorites now. I will say that some of their music will start out not particularly great and then there will be a switch into something marvelous and spell binding. The musicians that were with Brian Ferry over the years have always been phenominal and I really enjoy the long Riffs that are often played out within the songs..

Avalon was one of the first handful of CD's ever produced/distributed when Sony released the first CD player back in 1983. At that time all CD's were Japanese issues. It was used by Sony along with a few other albums as reference disks to market the CD technology benefits. I purchased and still have the 1st commercial CD player ever produced the CDP-101. I bought it through a furniture dealer as they were the only one's in the Bay Area to have it. The available CD's at the time were limited to about 25 different albums ... lol. Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" was another.

I swear, if you didn’t include More Than This, it was gonna get ugly! ☺️ Seriously, maybe the song wasn’t big on the Billboard top 100, but it was very popular in the New York club scene, and was on AOR radio all over the country. I worked at Capitol Records at the time and we were huge fans. They don’t really have the single rotation for AOR radio available anymore, but it was pretty popular, a much better number than in the pop single list. I worked in the Promotion Dept so I was aware of the top songs on all major radio stations across the country.

Usually famous people look like the rest of us in real life, Ferry had an aura about him.
