Mike Tyson had lost interest in boxing a 5 years before that fight. So much so that if a 58 year old, remotorvated, invigorated Mike Tyson would beat himself and his opponent in the same night.
Personally I don't think he was ever the same after coming out of prison. I think he would have happily never boxed again. But Boxing is the only thing he knew and he still could earn millions continuing.
Tyson got credit all of the time for his explosive power, but he was a much better boxer than he was given credit for. Pretty much all of his opponants were taller or bigger in some way. But he could Bob and weave, avoid punches to get in close and deliver the bad news.

I definitely think he could’ve achieved more than he did, had he not fell apart like he did. That being said, it was all his fault, he made bad choices and paid for them. Everyone who says “Tyson would never have lost if Cus didn’t die” are talking crap! He was was on a huge comeback trail when he fought Holyfield, he’d won the WBC, and was looking good. Holyfield was just better, simple as. He took some fantastic shots from Tyson and just absorbed them and threw back. I don’t think he’d ever have beaten Holyfield personally.

0:10 - Quote: "The last big fight that Mike Tyson won was against Michael "Jinx" Spinks (1988)" ??? This is a narrative I have heard from SO-SO-SO many hard-core Tyson fans and casual fans, and it is IMO nothing but BS talk. It is both a HUGE diss to ALL boxers he fought from 1989-2003 and Tyson himself's career. Tyson was in 1988 only 22-23 years young = a KID in professional boxing and Tyson himself have said so much. Tyson was technically speaking 2 years away from 25, the typical age at the time for the best top contenders that made it to the top at earliest and Tyson made it there when he was 20 (!)
Tyson stopped training his usual way, yes that is well known. After he fired Kevin Rooney and his manager Bill Cayton, two very trusted men Tyson's menthor and father figure Cus Damato had selected to guide his career, and they made a dang fine job in both marketing >Tyson and set up high-profile fights but also managing his finances.
However Tyson fired them and could our would not do the same training that made him the great champ. He instead focused on being a headhunter and added more- and more muscle mass on his body over the following years for more power - at the expense of speed, fast movement and even stamina. Tyson also took more big hits then he previously did due to not using his head movements as before.
Tyson defeated Ruddock x2, Bruno x2, Seldon, Botha etc. that all was champions and/or top contenders for many years = Big wins. Sure Tillman, Francis, McNeil, Nielsen etc. was no big ones but Tyson was still a man to beat as he was walking on there on top, only rivaled bu his era rivals Evader Holyfield & Lennon Lewis - who both Tyson postponed to fight for several years. Holy field was sidelined 1989-1996 despite becoming mandatory in 1989, and by WBA 1988 and in 1991 Tyson pulled out due to a claimed injury that never was shown with medical documentations (?). And Lewis was between 1996-2002. Lewis was Tyson's mandatory in 1996, but Tyson first paid him $4 million in step-a-side fee for Seldon and then Tyson after the fight dumped the WBC title and Lewis all together for fighting Holyfield. So 7 years later when 36 year old Lewis and 35 year old Tyson fought, non where any longer in there best prime days but non the less dangerous HW's.
Tyson was his own worst enemy in the end of the day. He wanted only the easy way. BOTH Kevin Rooney and Teddy Atlas said that Tyson easily could have been so much better but due to his lazy/easy mentality he could walk off training sessions and or prefer to slack off.
Tyson did not want to fight the best of his era like Lewis & Holyfield (well not until he could not go away any longer), Bowe, Mercer, McCall or Foreman despite the money and viewers would be exploding high in demand.

    • @rssphllps

Great achievement beating a guy that by then wasn't even a shadow of his best version? Not saying Tyson is the best ever. But in his prime, under D'Amato's direction, this guy wouldn't have had a chance. Why? Because he is an average boxer, like the many other boxers that Tyson faced and demolished. The story changed for Tyson after D'Amato is gone. Lost something along the way. And he faced better fighters, and I'm not talking about Douglas.
If a journey man can take care of a boxer in his prime, that's something to behold and it says plenty of the quality of the boxer in his prime, as it was the case wirh Tyson and Douglas. But when beaten by a journey man well past his prime, there's nothing to tell. No big achievement. It's like taking credit for cutting to pieces a tree that's already fallen.

Interesting how Lennox waited so long to fight Tyson. Like after Tyson had lost 3 years of his boxing life in jail. Whether you believe he was guilty or not is not the point here. We are talking pure boxing. Losing 3 years of a professional athlete’s career is a lot. Ali lost 3 years too, and that showed when he returned to the ring. Lennox, Holyfield, Douglas, portly Danny Williams and potato-hipped Kevin McBride could not have lasted 6 rounds with Tyson in his prime. Lewis could have fought Tyson prior to Mike going to jail but didn’t want to know. I wonder why?

@@travzimmerman1340 I hate to break it to you but Mike Tyson didn't have an era. When he was young and winning, he was only beating chumps. He never beat a quality fighter. The only people that think Mike Tyson is a legend were kids when he was fighting and they didn't know any better. I tell the truth no matter who likes it. I was a grown man when he was fighting and I know that he was fighting nobody's to build a reputation. Every time he tried to rise out of the chump category he would get his ass whipped. If Vlad or Vitali would have got a hold of him it would have been sad to see, just like Lennox Lewis destroying him but you'll never convince the kids that idolized him. They even tried to get Tyson to fight Tommy Morrison but Tyson himself said that Morrison has to much power and was to big of a threat. I have nothing personal against Tyson, I'm just tired of hearing about him. Like I've said a hundred times, he never beat a quality fight that wasn't already retired. That is by no means a legend of the sport! That is, unless you want to count biting ears, trying to break arms, head butting, or hitting women on the street with body shots. What a hero.
