Joe stayed at our house to train for this fight (and others), and he trained seriously. He pretty much only ate salmon and basmati rice, and I don’t think he touched alcohol at all during that time. His power was insane. He had never really trained with weights before, so they brought in a strength coach who discovered quite shockingly, that Joe could bench press 550 lbs! And for all the weight he was carrying, he could run a 48 second 440 as well as miles on the soft sand on the Quinault Indian Nation beach. He could just knock around the sparring partners. This was his shot and he knew it, and trained with laser focus. Him, his wife, manager, trainer, and strength coach were a lot of fun to hang out with, and there was a lot of excitement going into his fight. I loved the mutual respect Joe and Tommy showed each other.
