- Jack Kirby Scholar Tom Scioli dissects Jack Kirby’s unauthorized continuation of The New Gods in Issue 13 of Captain Victory. this is one of Jack Kirby’s great comics, in spite of having some of the worst inking and color in Jack’s long and storied career.
Tom, thanks so much for this great video. Could you possibly show a great inking job on Kirby vs a terrible inking job side by side one of these days? It’s such a topic when talking about Kirby, I’d love a more ground understanding
I agree. There's not enough Kirby. That final splash page is so bold, it's magnificent. I've been fortunate to see Kirby's 11X17's and when I see the geometric shapes and use of perspective in shots like this one, my mind is just blown. The spot blacks are not used to just convey light sources, but figures, composition, texture and weight as well as a design aesthetic. Hail the King of Comics.
"The Fields of Kalendria/Calantha" of Blade Runner lore... the Lovecraftian phrase "Cosmic Horrors' goes back at least to REHoward's "The Phoenix on the Sword"
O m g the visuals on the show have improved so much it looks beautiful
The inking's maybe a li'l bit stoopid but it's kind of luscious as well... you can see the brush being twirled !
Great editing Mister Scioli! Loved the sound effects you snuck in!
Thanks for introducing me to another Kirby classic!
At 9:21 I recognize the Seeing Hand from Faith No More's 'Epic' video... "It's in your Face but You can't Grab it!"
I foolishly completely dismissed this comic when it first came out. Tom you've given me a new appreciation! Shame on me to discount the King!
The density of this makes me wonder if Jack had this tale originally planned to go for several issues and the decision to end the series had him condensing his plot in order to complete the story. If that's the case, I bet a lot of cool ideas were left out.
Witchman is a blast, by the way. I'm looking forward to the printed comic in my mailbox.
Thank you once again for covering Captain Victory with the deft and passionate analysis it deserves. This was my first Kirby series, and thirty years later it’s still my favorite. Kudos to you for spreading the gospel. Cheers.
Insane and wonderful. Kirby never disappoints. A creative colossus. The videos are looking better in quality than ever - thanks.
Thx for these videos. I think I need to dig out my Captain Victory series and reread it!
For all the flaws of the inking and color on this baxter paper I still enjoyed it for all the splash pages.
Hello Tom.
Nice video.
I hope you are doing well :)
14:48 I was gunna say that splash reminds me so much of He-Man
this is great
show is looking better and better. I'm not an artist but is the inking too thick? the colours are odd to like you said Tom.
