I remember in like 2000 when my school did this and some kid played the same thing. He was so good BUT for some reason the crowd thought it was boring and didn't clap or anything. Poor kid didn't even place for a price. He sounded awesome to.
Talent shows are extremely biased at high schools and middle schools. In one of the shows at my school, there was a super good dance crew that did a choreography to Flux Pavillion's Gold Dust (if you've ever seen America's Best Dance Crew, it was like that)... they didn't even place in top 5 despite honestly being good enough to teach their own freestyle courses at the local dance studios. The top performance was given to a girl doing a Hawaiian dance that was pretty much as you'd expect (the first 10 seconds being interesting and the next 1.5 minutes being the first 10 seconds on repeat). Talent shows are rigged.
The problem with doing guitar stuff at school talent shows is that not one single person there will appreciate the work behind the guitar solo or generally like the song being played, with that said this is one the best covers of eruption I’ve seen by someone live
What a bloody legend. He isn’t even tapping his foot and he still manages to play that. This kid, Green Day, and The Offspring inspired me to learn how to play Guitar.
I remember how powerful it felt to play Eruption. The Music Store that gave me guitar lessons was having an open house concert where people could play whatever on their instruments, and I chose to play 316 followed by Eddie Van Halen’s extended version of the Eruption solo, and I remember beginning once the amps went on. The crowd was talking at first, but once it started they went dead silent. They were silent the whole time. It was crazy, like they were glued to the performance the whole time. I wasn’t perfect, but I did my best and heard a kid backstage yell “HE’S DOING FINGER TAPPING!!!” And as quickly as it started it was over. I walked off stage and sat down.
1:57 It sounds like some kid said "I think It's trash" and "It hurts my ears". Kind of makes me sad, this kid has no idea how much work and talent it takes to learn this, and especially at the age of 12 or 13.

Not at all. As talented as the kid is. It's made me realise more how many people don't understand guitar playing. Now many people can mimic this. You see lots of posts people playing this or this style. But How many people can mimic Jimi Hendrix? Peter Greens-Fleetwood Mac? Frank Zappa? Allman Brothers? Rory Gallagher? Santana? Sure there's tracks from those artist people can do. But I bet you there's more tracks people can't do than they can. But yet cover bands can do a full set of Metallica... And sound very close.... Good luck trying to do a full set of Hendrick's, Green, Zapper, Brothers, Gallagher, Santana lol
Congrats, buddy...you did GREAT!!!! MY son(who is now almost 30), also played Eruption on his guitar for his eighth grade talent show! Half the audience had their lighters up in the air!! I was just in tears..I was SO PROUD of him!!! SHRED ON, YOUNG MAN!!! 🎶🎸🎶🎸🎶
Most kids at his age can barely play a power chord. Yeah he's not perfect or super clean but then half of the people commenting are fifteen year old kids who probably play based off of ego. Real musicians understand how valuable potential can be and if you're in your twenty's mocking a 13 year old, you're probably insecure about you're own playing. There is a huge difference between a critique and insulting someone.
Sergio Stevens System of a Down isn't difficult to play. If you can strum fast you can hammer through most of their tunes. I would love to see a vieo of your Avenged Sevenfold song and it better be something difficult and non sloppy. ;) Otherwise I will just call you jealous.
Sergio Stevens Those are some good songs to start out with. I would recommend a much harder song. Possibly from their first album. If you want a good chop burner give Hot for Teacher a try or better give any song by Blind Guardian a try. Those will build your chops. What I was defending with this kid is the fact that he's playing a very chop heavy song in a fairly clean matter. When you get older you will understand why I'm pointing that out.
Sergio Stevens There you go. Don't ever watch a video of a kid your age and use it to get mad at him. You just have to watch the video and ask "What is he doing that makes it work?" Watch his technique and his hands, learn from the video. If you start competing and putting others down you're only going to hold yourself back. You're already ahead of kids your age judging from what you have told me. Run with it.
Ok I know this comment is old but this is from the tooth fairy well not exactly he say something like it but props to you because we’re probably the only people who still watch that movie lol
A group of people at my schools talent show did a whole hip hop dance performance that they have been practicing for 2 months on and they were beaten by some girl who was singing. I heard she wasn’t even good too. Talent shows are a joke.
Yep. If I play a simple blues scale and hang on to triplets for dear life the crowd goes fucking insane. But when I play a crazy hard solo like something from pat benitar or pantera literally no one even acknowledges it. I think it has something to do with being a musician and better being able to critically listen for complicated arrangements. Our brains think differently.
The audience is never wrong. They want to hear what sounds cool, not necessarily the speedy scales you've rehearsed. An E5 power chord is no less powerful just because you can play it with one finger.
pape37 Except one is easy and takes pretty much no talent or innovation. Which leads to the same boring music that everyone complains about but keeps buying because marketers tell them to. This is why the 60s/70s was a better period for musical innovation. A large portion of the population wanted something new, which required creative innovation. As opposed to now where everyone is afraid of change. I understand your point though, however, the average person is fucking boring.
Little Brother, Uncle Eddie is smiling down upon you from Heaven!!! Awesome job kiddo, you have made us Gen Xers very happy and proud!!! I'm looking forward to hearing more from you in the future! 😎👍
The kids in the crowd have no idea how technical this performance is. The music is way before their time to be able to fully appreciate it. Way to go, Kid🎼🎶🎵🎼👍🏼
Man these videos are always ruined by people acting pretentious as fuck about their music tastes. You don't need to be a metalhead to appreciate a good guitarist just like you don't need to be a concert pianist to appreciate Beethoven or a sprinter to appreciate Usain Bolt.
The fact that the tapping part is so easy and twice better sounding than the first part shows that music isn't a skill competition, but a creativity game
Today is the day we lost Eddie and this is my first time hearing this kid playing Eruption. If he didn't hear this himself 12 years ago you can bet he's hearing it now.
+Plurple I bet none of them do but nevertheless I´m a very cultured person and when I was at that age I was already cultured, yes, and yet I didn´t know this song.
10% of the vid: Talented kid playing Eruption 90% of the vid: WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
AND THIS SHOWS WITHOUT A SHADOW OF DOUBT JUST HOW GREAT EVH WAS. WHEN I WAS A KID FIRST HEARING ERUPTION IN THE LATE 70s NO ONE HAD A CLUE AS TO WHAT THEY WERE HEARING IT WAS ALIEN & JAW DROPPING. NOW KIDS CAN PLAY IT. EVH NOT ONLY INSPIRED A GENERATION TO WANT TO PLAY, BUT HIS LEGACY ALSO HAS LEFT ANY FURTHER GENERATIONS OF KIDS PLAYING GREAT BEFORE THEY CAN EVEN AFFORD TO BY A GUITAR. HE ADVANCED EVERYONE. R. I. P.
It took me years after to get into Van Halen, but my favorite band since 1993 was (and is) Pantera, and as we all know EVH was a huge inspiration for Dimebag Darrell. RIP to all the greats!

@@shawnpolny61 I challenge u to play mia a7x
Congrats, buddy...you did GREAT!!!! MY son(who is now almost 30), also played Eruption on his guitar for his eighth grade talent show! Half the audience had their lighters up in the air!! I was just in tears..I was SO PROUD of him!!! SHRED ON, YOUNG MAN!!! 🎶🎸🎶🎸🎶
0:20 i love how everyone gasped as his whammy bar fell off the guitar
It's not perfect. He should have had a cigarette on his guitar, then it would have been.
One on the guitar and one in his hand
I will never forget the day I witnessed Eddie Van Halen reach up and lodge a cigarette in the guitar then jam
hell yeah
but school policies
Hell yeah, but smoking kills people
I bet even the principal would allow that --- just to see how cool it looked
Sergio Stevens I'm referring to SOAD's chop heavy songs for example Revenga or BYOB.
Sergio Stevens That's the way to do it. Keep practicing! You have the right attitude. I apologize my assumption earlier.
This solo at the tapping part always makes me tear up. Music is crazy.

A group of people at my schools talent show did a whole hip hop dance performance that they have been practicing for 2 months on and they were beaten by some girl who was singing. I heard she wasn’t even good too. Talent shows are a joke.
Something I've noticed about these guitar videos is that people cheer the easiest parts. And are seemingly unimpressed by the challenging parts.
Hopesedge
Well, most people can't even count their beats right soooo...
The fact that this man is 30 years old now is crazy
the girls should've thrown their training bras on stage at the end

Then 12 years later they use 7.25%
nowadays they use .762% of their power

You can’t assume that
Bull shit it was way before their time. I’m in 8th grade and I grew up with this music and I still listen to it on my own
This was 13 years ago lol
Man these videos are always ruined by people acting pretentious as fuck about their music tastes. You don't need to be a metalhead to appreciate a good guitarist just like you don't need to be a concert pianist to appreciate Beethoven or a sprinter to appreciate Usain Bolt.
The fact that the tapping part is so easy and twice better sounding than the first part shows that music isn't a skill competition, but a creativity game

At 8th grade he has conquered Van Halen's "Impossible Solo"
Actually, that's not all that difficult. It would be MUCH more challenging to play "I'm the one" from their first album than this.
I know. I was being sarcastic

NOW KIDS CAN PLAY IT. EVH NOT ONLY INSPIRED A GENERATION TO WANT TO PLAY, BUT HIS LEGACY ALSO HAS LEFT ANY FURTHER GENERATIONS OF KIDS PLAYING GREAT BEFORE THEY CAN EVEN AFFORD TO BY A GUITAR.
