Oh wow! Your timing is great. Just 4 days ago, I received a H. polyneura and a H. multiflora both very dry, but with a lot of black spots on the undersides of the leaves. I actually contacted the seller bc I thought it was fungus. Yes, please do more of these issues vids, they are very helpful.
I had a flat mite problem this spring so I used beneficial mites "Neoseiulus Californicus" from Natures Good Guys. They did a great job, new growth within weeks of the first application. Now I've started using Super Daves Bug Juice Spray to keep the critters away.
Adding that I used these as well, though from a different buyer, and they were very effective to get rid of flat and spider mites. Had to use a couple of rounds but it was easier than spraying close to a hundred plants lol.

Funny you mention that plant ... I'm doing a video on uglies, and I have one of these seedlings I'm going to rehab. These are underrated and beautiful once they mature. And yes, Hoya can go on and on "upstairs" while down below, things may not be so hot 🤭
Great content Dave. I've always wondered about this topic and I've grown for years. Thank you. I'm always learning from you and it has helped me in growing hoyas. Enjoy a beautiful Iowa weekend.
This was very helpful. I think I had fungus on my Princess. I had to cut off so many leaves. She was getting black spots in almost perfect circle shape and it went to a few other leaves. I sprayed it with neem and I'm not seeing any more. I even repotted her because I wanted to make sure it wasn't root rot, but the roots looked perfect. The spots made me think of fungus because they were so regular in shape, it reminded me of mold spots on bread or cheese. Fingers crossed the crisis is over now. The internet was no help in trying to find what it was, I couldn't find anything that looked like it at all!
Argh. That's frustrating! But you're right, sure sounds like fungal, anyway. I've just not had any significant experience with it. In other words, I'm less help even than I usually am 😆

Hi Dave! My common problem are mealies who rear their ugly fuzzy little bodies from time to time. Every once in a while I get yellow leaves. A RUclipsr, Annie's Hoya Addiction based in Sri Lanka said yellowing leaves, if it has nothing to do with watering, could be a nutrient dificiency such as lack of nitrogen. She also mentioned using Epsom salt. I haven't had any problem since which was a big problem for me. A seller gave me a 2 leaf cutting of the hoya wmz some months ago and I fell in love with it but it died so I'm trying to purchase one. And, after seeing your waymaniae, I purchased one right after veiwing your video! Hoya, oh boya! ! 😊 Dee, NY

I am currently hoping my hoya Joy will pull thru..I had 4 leaves, now 3 and two young leaves that were there ( sine arrival) but not hardened off, are looking weak and just sad. I acclimated Joy and a Finlaysonii in my bathroom from shipping, Fin's happy in there, but Joy wasn't ,and is currently suffering from a of combo removing osmacote, repotting, overwatering, then moving to the hot sunny window...but I am leaving it in the sunny window, I just put it behind a monstera leaf..I always hear about Joy liking a lot of light, especially since she's a bigger leaf? I was frightened to water again, after my overwatering past, but was finally dry, so I went gentle. I think recieving hoya shipped wet can be a kiss of death.
Oof. Yeah, I always reach out to a customer if they purchase a Hoya I've just watered and say "Let's give her a few days before shipment." No one has ever said to just box it up anyway lol. I do keep 'Joy' in a very bright, very hot window myself. It's an unheated porch, so that will, here in Iowa, have to change sooner or later....
Looking on leaves on my Merillii I guess it has been attacked by mites… time to investigate. I know that hoyas like to grow in pon too, and that’s my way to grow them if they don’t want to grow in soil and develop roots. Macrophylla is my prime example. Didn’t want to grow in soil, I cut it, put in in water first and immediately pushed new leaf. I run out of pon so I put it back to soil and yet again I’m waiting for something to happen 😂 time to go back to water/pon solution I guess!
I have a Hoya globulosa that I bought as a four leaf plant two years ago. It's been quite slow growing. It's on a trellis now with about a dozen leaves. The new leaves are beautiful emerald green. But the lower leaves are much paler, not yellow, but not the vivid green of the upper leaves. If it were an older plant, I would assume the lowest leaves were reaching the end of their lifespan. If this was a nutrient deficiency, wouldn't the entire plant look sickly? It's my understanding that Hoya are not heavy feeders, being epiphytes. It's potted in coconut husk chips and ground coconut coir. I water it weekly-ish. I've read they object to too much moisture. It's quite near a grow light and has plenty of air circulation. Any suggestions?
Your mix could potentially be responsible in nutrient locking (specifically calcium and magnesium). Of course I have no idea if they were buffered. Either way, I use Tezula, an MSU fertilizer, every single watering of the year with all of my Hoya. As for that specific plant, mine is quite young. A friend gave me a gorgeous cutting just this summer. What a plant 😊
Thanks, I'll look into Tezula. Globulosa was one of those "have-to-have" Hoyas. The color, the veination, the fuzz. What's not to love? (Other than the fuzz collecting the occasional dog hair)
Hi Dave. Please can you tell me how you use the Pure Crop 1 and then I didn't catch the other product you mentioned? What is you take on the flat mites ( I think there are a few different ones). Pure Crop1 or Sulfur? And sorry, one more question. I saw your prop video and made a dunk for the cuttings. Something like Pure Crop1, Dr. Woods, H2O2 and ???? Wonder mind... Thank you for a great video!!!
Sure thing! I initially used PC1 as a test against flat mites, which worked very well, and root mealies, also worked brilliantly. (Thank you, order from Florida, for giving me this opportunity lol). I also water it into the substrate. I hate sulfur. I used it one single time a couple of years ago, and that's that. Alcohol was the last ingredient on that list. Cheers from Iowa City!
Hey, there! I don't have a great system for selling plants online this year (I had no idea how many RUclipsrs would be interested), but I can be reached at soberplantguy@gmail.com. I am running a bit thin this late in the year, but sure do have a lot of plants in the cooker, so to speak lol
@@soberplantguy thank you so much “speak/err type” made me giggle 🤭.. but thanks, I see soil drench tossed around a lot with PC1 but never any videos on how to do it properly! 😩
Not only will they live comfortably in normal household environs, it'll live happily in horrid household conditions 😁 (aka, very cold, very low humidity)
Do you have a tip against thripse? They are what I simply cannot get rid of. It is 2 of my plants that are constantly under attack. I've tried showering and spraying with the commercial bug sprays that say they work against thripse. But they still plague my plants. Any ideas? Plus what to do with a giant plant? And I mean giant, giant. Taking up a space of 2m x 3m, maybe a bit more. It is fixed. How do I debug a giant like that? 👀
For the giant, I lay down a tarp and spray away (the DIY, non toxic stuff). As for thrips, I'm kind of sorry I can't offer advice.... but kinda not lol. I just haven't had to deal with those little monsters. Sorry you're dealing with 'em.
PureCrop1 treats flat mites? I spray every 8 - 10 days. Went through sulphur last spring. Of course I only have about 25 Hoyas. Also what you would consider a few very boring plants.
I'm quite happy with the results. Yes, the upfront cost is high, but since I was also delivered a plant with root mealies, I bought it in an instant and started watering everything with it, just in case.
@@soberplantguy I also water with PureCrop1. What proportion do you use? I am using 1 cap/gal. But haven’t had root mealies yet. But, I am fairly new to Hoyas.
If you lose a leaf on a plant that has 50 leaves it is different than losing a leaf on one that has only 3! Truth. It hurts more. You know what else hurts? When you lose a leaf on a small leaf hoya like serpens. You may have 49 other leaves, but it can go downhill very fast.

Investigate.... and then destroy! (Well, if necessary lol). Sounds like pon works for you. It's always good to get that sort out....
Yay! It came through! When I first clicked on it it said "Marked Private". Lol! I thought you kicked me out!
I tried 🤣🤣🤣
The world is in a turmoil and then there is Dave
Well shucks.......
Informative.
Thank you!
I've been wondering if you sell online so that I may have access to your sales?
Hey, there! I don't have a great system for selling plants online this year (I had no idea how many RUclipsrs would be interested), but I can be reached at soberplantguy@gmail.com. I am running a bit thin this late in the year, but sure do have a lot of plants in the cooker, so to speak lol
Can you please do a video on how you treat with PureCrop1 and how to properly do a soil drench with it from start to finish? 😩😭
Sure thing. I'm planning a review as we speak/err, type
@@soberplantguy thank you so much “speak/err type” made me giggle 🤭.. but thanks, I see soil drench tossed around a lot with PC1 but never any videos on how to do it properly! 😩
You wouldn’t want to try re-root the one you threw away. Or did I miss that you tried growing in water 💦
You may have missed the part where I said I started it over three times 😆 At some point, it just time to move on.
Does a Hoya Sunrise need to live in a humidity tent? Or can it live comfortably in the household?
@@phf3238 I use 12 ml per gallon. And if you're watering with it, you probably *won't* get root mealies. Here's hoping anyway 😬
Listen, sometimes we have to jettison a leaf or two. NBD
not the people who think sun stress is hurting a hoya 😂
I'm currently at 100% thumbs up, so I assume that none of them have viewed my video 🤣
So true. Losing one third of the foliage sucks 🤣
Apparently Knot Dude does not agree that PureCrop1 gets rid of Flat Mites.
Interesting, not what he said on the podcast with Doug, but perhaps he changed his mind. Anyway, I know what my experience has been.
@@soberplantguy Well, I got this second hand so, that goes to show you. I actually believe you that mites are mites. Now going back to listen to that Podcast one more time.
Ooooohhhh. I see what you’re doing. You’re trying to help me, huh? Nice try, buddy.
The last thing I want to do is try to be helpful. That's just gonna backfire every time 🤣
