I loved this video! Watching you cut and prop your plants gave me the courage I needed to cut and prop mine. I am new to Hoyas and was afraid of killing them. I’m using your mix to pot them in as well. Wish me luck. 😊
15:31. This is exactly what I was hoping for. I got quiet when you said "start over" because I wasn't sure what that meant. Thanks for this follow-up my friend!
Such a coincidence! Recently started on my “ugly” Hoyas as well.. Those are mainly plants that are in the growtent and do not need the humidity of it… such long aerial roots, not pretty! I mainly have that tent because of lack of proper window space (due to other people saying Hoyas are slow growers I suddenly ran out of space, since obviously they aren’t slow), shoved everything that didn’t fit and everything finicky into a small tent, but have now decided that only plants that grow prettily in the tent can stay there… as for the rest…. Ill keep the ones that I like best or am most curious about for the windows and the others can go to a new owner. Don’t want to install any more growlights just to keep plants in places where I actually don’t really want them. Its hard to be reasonable when it comes to plants 😅. When another hobby/collection overflows… it can be put anywhere (attic/on top of cabinets/dark corner/cubbyhole etcetc) but with plants…. they need good conditions, so thats a nice spot and a bunch of investments (lights, stands/tables/cabinets/tents, sometimes a humidifier or a fan) At this point… I want the plants just to be an enrichment of life 🌸
I could not agree more--with everything here. My home is a home, first and foremost. Yes, I have a lot of plants, but it never looks overwhelming (at least to me lol). If you don't water and feed your plants until they're in distress and the leaves are thin as wax paper, yes, they will grow..... Have I mentioned that on my channel??
@@soberplantguy Happy to hear that you keep things sane (for yourself) Haha yes, that advice is so wrong! But unless one stumbles upon (a channel with) decent information…. its the information that most people get when they get their first Hoyas 😖 The recent mindshift for me is: “what do I want” and “where do I want it” in stead of “I like all these plants and now I have to find a space for them so that they are all happy” (the latter being what I have been doing for years) It will mean not having everything I like(d) but its such a more relaxing and comfortable approach (and an ongoing process 😂)
Hi Dave, Many thanks for another great and informative video! It takes some time to read all the comments from your viewers but I always enjoy their experiences and of course your replies to their comments/questions. So glad I found your channel this year! Take care. 👌🪴🥰
I felt like you read my mind I was completely blowing my brains off to cut some of the Hoyas and after your video. No more thinking just chop chop thank you for sharing good information stay healthy be happy peace
Great video! It sometimes needs a leep of taith to start a plant fresh, but in the Long Run No regrets. 🌱🌳🌱 I'm Having a depressed day and enjoyed your good Spirit a lot, thanks for starting a youtube Channel! 👍😊
Hi, I have dilemma. Being a newbie back into growing plants and learning about hoyas, I planted them into a very dense potting mix. All my small ones have been repotted into a chunky mix. My question is about my biggest one ( a publicalyx) . The top is growing but I don't see any roots through the clear pot. And I probably should have used a smaller pot. 🤦🏻♀️ Would you just take the bull by the horns and repot in a chunky mix? Most of the ones I repotted had not the greatest root systems. 😢
In my experience, anyway, nothing good comes from waiting for things to improve when potted up into a too-dense substrate. So, yes, *I* would get that plant into a more suitable substrate. That's me. I am unafraid to grab the horns, however 😆
Oh my, if I was your neighbour I would raid your garbage bin for plants 😊. But I totally get it. I once bought a Lacunosa that had ugly washed out leaves and I simply restarted it. Now I have three beautiful plants from that one Lacunosa with beautiful green shining leaves. Thank you for taking the time to share this.
Well, another highly informative video. I am learning so much from you. I received an order of Hoyas the same week as the ones I got from you. Some of that shipment are doing fantastic, others not so much (the Hai Phong I got from you that same week is showing more roots, I can feel that Jennifer is rooting but can't see any roots yet). You have answered a pressing question I had about checking the roots of the order not from you. I am going to give the "slow" ones a couple of weeks to show me something and then I'll check them out. Or maybe I should just go ahead and do it now because I got the supplies to make your substrate and some of the plants are still in what they were shipped in. Can you kindly advise me?
I always put plants into my substrate straight away. I find that way I’ll reduce the risk of root rot, or potentially find problems early. Glad to hear that “our” plants are doing well !
Hey Dave! Working my way through all of your videos. Originally subscribed in May I think it was, then had a very busy summer and didn’t get a chance to watch as they came out. Really enjoying your content, thank you! Wondered if you would be up for any of the following video ideas? - House tour / houseplant tour. See what grows in which rooms, and how you’ve chosen to use them as decoration. - Antiques tour! A little segment maybe at the end of a main video where you show off some of your antiques. I adore the dresser behind you. - Q+A video? What career(s) have you had, how did you and your wife meet, what is your dogs name and age - this is starting to sound like I’m phishing for password reset details here 😂 - who are your favourite plant RUclipsrs, etc. - on that note, I think you’d possibly like techplants experiment videos. Keep on keeping on, you’re a RUclips natural!
Wow--thank you! And thanks for all the questions. The Q+A will be out today, my sobriety birthday. I can tell you now that we don't have enough antiques to do an actual tour of, but you will probably see another piece that I really love on the plant porch, beneath my stag. Thanks again for the questions and channel support! 😊
Thank you! This was just what I needed to hear! I’ve had a four leaf rooted Rosita for over a year! It has done nothing! Just chopped off her roots and cut her in half! lol Now I am hopeful!
I have an Iris Marie that has large internodal spaces that is fugly as, so she is getting the chop today! My question is, are you bottom watering all of your cuttings in the trays?
Those trays are just for the moment. They’re all going in a prop box. However, I don’t bottom water anything. Good luck with your-that’s a lovely plant ☺️
Oh yeah, I chopped a hoya (no idea which one) and put 3 bare stems in water with 1 node each - no leaves. The roots went crazy all along the stem and now all 3 have leaves starting from the nodes. Hoyas are so cool!!
They sure are! And it makes life so much simpler to know that if at least some part of that Hoya is in water, you'll likely get roots. How many dead aroids have I pulled out because the node got pulled out 🤭
Thanks Dave. Sore knees and achillles tendonits did not stop me from grabbing my uglies! I managed to bring back to life hoyas fungii, Laos, polyneura, Patricia and a few others where I had to start them over and now they look great but I wanted to try your mix in repotting them transferring from leca. That included Merrillii and Dr. Ibok that sat outside all summer. My most recent purchases I put in Pon, like you said no need to wait for new plants to acclimate so I'm testing the surigaeogensis and soligamiana in Pon. So I'll see which would thrive better between the leca, coco husk mix and Pon. I'm hoping for the best. 👍🏽 Dee, NY
I've been stacking firewood this week--sore EVERYthing 😆 I worked at my friends last plant sale of the week, and almost came home with a Dr Ibok. You'll have to keep my up to date on that. You having one makes me think I should have grabbed it. For that matter, I'd love an update on your substrates. For working the sale, I was gifted a cinnamomifolia, 'Paula,' 'Seanie,' and a sp. mutia, along with a bunch of really great looking (former) seedlings. Cheers from Iowa City 😊
I just chopped up my linearis, earlier today, to try and fill my pot more. Seeing this video and another person's video about easily propping hoya, i decided why not.
Exactly! You know, that's a plant a never wanted, just didn't appeal to me. And then a friend gifted me a generous cutting ... and I adore it. One of those that has to be seen in person, perhaps. Or at least I did 😁
I was given some just-potted props of this plant a few months ago--one I didn't want, and never expected to like as much as I do 😁 It was slower out of the gate. If all looks well, just hang on. I don't think that's unusual for this species. Cheers from Iowa City!
