Thank you so much for the videos. I've been a plant fanatic since I was a teenager and come from a long line of plant fanatics but just learned about hoya. I love them! My favorite are the fuzzies. My orchid you tube icons introduced me to them. I also live in iowa and am happy to find a fellow iowan to follow your iowan hoya care regime. I have 50ish hoya now. I'm sure there will be more. Thanks for the videos🤍
If you are anywhere near Cedar Rapids ... you MUST visit Crazy Plant Gal. She's having sales every other weekend. I was just there and snagged a Bat Cave, Elephant, Svetlana ... and so on. Cheers from Iowa City
As for orchids, I have mostly mini phals, but I think you'd love neofinetia (now vanda) falcata or cattleyas. I dont have a lot of space, so I tend to have smaller plants. My cattleyas are minis or compact. This was a great video. You have gorgeous plants!
Once I was able to grow store bought phalaenopsis, I bought a true phalaenopsis from Borneo name phalaenopsis Belina. The blooms are nothing like the store bought, and it has a great smell. I have mottled leafed phalaenopsis and then I moved to jewel orchids which you grow more for the foliage than the blooms. I also have several catleyas and oncidiums. On the oncidiums, I have more twinkles, that are miniature oncidium orchids. Most of my hoyas are fragrant and the blooms come in such a wide variety of colors and sizes of blooms. You will enjoy the orchid growing journey. I want to try growing a hoya from seed. I'm intimated by it for some reason. Do you have any cuttings of Jennifer available??? You and your wife have a beautiful Iowa evening.
I'm going to enjoy looking into those orchids--thank you! I need to roll through a few hundred Hoya for this weekend first, though. I do have those really gorgeous 'Jennifer' cuttings from the recent video available. Stunning. (I'm also about to shop a less mature plant as well.) You can always email me at soberplantguy@gmail.com, as well. I'll get you some pics, if you like.
I forgot all about that being in the frame! My wife bought me that, and figured it would be too low magnification. But for most things I want to check out, it's FAR easier to use (and much faster). Cheers!
ooh decursiva, good move getting it on a stake it will produce long runners otherwise. I started mine from a wet stick 4 years ago and have big fenestrated leaves now. As for roots, it will send long aerial roots down the stake like a monstera. Actually just seen your using a bamboo cane, you would be better of with some chunky timber so it can attach and thicken up, sorry, good luck!
Be careful of getting into orchids, they can be quite addictive! As for recommendation, _Dendrobium nobile_ is a very popular species. You can find a lot of care info here on RUclips. _Phalaenopsis schilleriana_ is a good one, kind of a more interesting alternative to the regular complex hybrid phalaenopsis. Also paphiopedilums and phragmipediums especially cool growing ones which a lot of them are.
The seeds are from Rice and Swiffer's Hoya, a private FB group. Super positive vibes on that one. Crazy Plant Gal can be reached at crazyplantgal.com@gmail.com, and if I have something you'd like: soberplantguy@gmail.com -- cheers
Does that tetrasperma crawl rather than climb and won't that be a problem for the bamboo pole? Love your videos they are inspiring in process of repotting my hoyas so I'm grateful for soil recipe. Thanks again.
It's crawling looking for something to climb--but it sure does look like a crawler at the minute. They all, basically, look like that when purchased. I'm so stinkin' excited about that plant 😁
Hands down Paphiopedilums are my favorite orchid. I love Vanda's but not for Iowa, unless you have a grow tent to keep them in. Good luck!! There are more, but love those lady slippers.
There are so many types of medium out there and so many recipes! I still have a compiled list with like 3-4 recipes (from the “all knowing” internet) for each type of plant, but I hardly use it anymore. If a plant needs water twice a week, then it needs a bigger pot or more moisture retentive ingredients. If it doesn’t need a drink after 2 weeks, then it needs less moisture retentive ingredients, for me it is now as simple as that. As you say: 3 ingredients are enough! (Still slowly mixing away the rest of the stash though 😂) And for new plants I’ve become even lazier recently…. Propagating everything in moss-perlite mix and then sticking it into pure tree fern fibre. So far only a piper didnt appreciate that, the pipers now go into pon for me. And if I have to water more often than I want to… that plants goes over into a 3 ingredient mix I don’t like propagating in tree fern though, so far it had a much lower success rate than moss-perlite mix for me. I don’t think tree fern is “better” than a good soil mix. But it for sure is easier. While expensive, it doesn’t really need amendments (mixing it with things like cocochips/cocohusk, perlite, bark would make its use cheaper) and when it gets dry-ish the colour becomes lighter, so when checking on the plants it is easy to see which ones needs water. This is good for plant parents who check on their plants often and tend to be on the over watering side like me 😂 It has a property that is nice for underwatering plant parents too…. It doesn’t get hydrophobic. So for someone who underwaters it would be great to put into a regular mix, to rehydrate the hydrophobic substrate quicker/easier. (If not for underwatering it would be a waste to mix it into a soil/peat/etc based mixture) Still on the same repots here, though I did half of my friends repots in between so its ok to be behind on schedule 😊 (RUclips rarely shows community posts for me) Im glad you have things that still make your day while suffering the effects of long Covid. Losing the ability to do the things you love and enjoy can be devastating. But then sometimes when we find something that we can still do, it brings all the more joy! Do you have a plant limit? I mean like a certain amount that you can manage to take care of If we would all worry about how others would judge us for being stupid, the world would be stiff and/or fake. As for strong opinions………… If they make sense……. 👍 I mean.. the nonsense opinions out there are strong, so they need something to counter that 😂 Looking forward to your experiment with all those different substrates! 😊 And to your styling vid and whatever other planty video you post, though I’m sure you could make the skin care successful (maybe even together with your wife?) Will leave it at that, this comment already got waaaaaaay too long 🫢
Not too long for me! I don't really have a plant limit. But I'm not one to cram a ton of plants together, style-wise. I am careful to only grow plants that I actually care about, no matter how common they are. As for fashion/beauty/etc, I was really just teasing my wife because I reality, I have NO patience for any of it 🤣
What is your opinion on long vines that grow bare? Do you cut them back in hopes to stimulate new productive growth? Or do you just let them keep growing?
I take this plant-by-plant. I have an AH074 with very long vines that have no leaves because it's hanging--but, the inner-nodal spacing is tight, and it wants to produce. I'll trellis it. If I have a vine that has scarred over nodes, are huge spacing between them, I'll cut it, stand back, and watch it push out new growth. I have never once regretted doing it, either. (As you can probably imagine at this point 🤣).
@@soberplantguy I'm even more aggressive with the scissors. I'm like Mrs. Scissorhands with long hoya vines. I love watching the plants put out new growth more than I like long vines I guess.
Hi! Your Merrilli looks beautiful. I like your substrate recipe. How long have you been collecting hoya? I used to think hoya needed to dry out but no longer. They're thirsty plants
@@soberplantguy I always refer to this hobby as an ongoing experiment. You live and learn... I may try your substrate recipe soon, I just like to have an alternative to soil and PON. I'll have to get caught up on your videos. And you are pretty stylish. LOL. Oh, is your info available on your channel description for buying? I'm smitten with the Merrillii.
@@planttherapy1860 Don't go too far back in the videos ... they keep getting worse 🤣 You can email me at soberplantguy@gmail.com if you like. Happy to set you up with a merrillii, or whatever else might interest you. Cheers
Real quick- do you mind if I ask you a question, unrelated to the video? Gee, thanks 😊 Do you have any experience with Hoya Sp. Af. Bertoniae or Hoya Cumingiana? I’ve heard Cumingiana blooms smell like cinnamon… sigh. All of my Hoyas are slowly coming back from flat mite infestations. I watched your video about pest treatment and have used your recipe 😊 Thanks so much! I really appreciate your time and enthusiasm. I think we can all tell that you’re really into this! It makes me happy
Quick pro tip: do not give up on that pest treatment when you see new growth start to explode. It's a trick!!! 🤣 Flat mites have a very, very long life cycle, and eggs will hatch way on down the road. Be vigilant. Yes, I have killed a cumingiana, but am growing the other one really well. If I do say so myself 🤭
Mine work out to just about the same, except for a few in the west windows. I don't seem to have quite the problems that many have growing in terracotta.
You talk about positioning the vines on the trellis. Can you say more? Do you try to make a node come in contact with the wire? And what was that about Hoya liking to be wrapped counterclockwise?
I try to avoid get a node anywhere near the trellis, if possible. You're just asking for a deformed leaf if it has to grow against it. Ask me how I know lol. As for counterclockwise, it's what Hoya do naturally (mostly). Some don't mind how you trellis them, and others will throw themselves off the bridge.
I know you'll be looking at comments so I want to know if you deal with mold (not mineral deposits) with your terracotta and greenhouse etc. I'm spraying on hydrogen peroxide for now. I have amended soil and use a moisture meter but where I live things don't dry out quickly. Thanks for any wisdom you cast my way!
I really only deal with mold *if* I put the pot in a plastic sleeve, in the tent. Once I take it out and wash it with my pest spray, it’s gone. This probably wasn’t too helpful. Thanks for tuning in again, though!
I'm repotting several of my propagations from my old (yuck) soil mix, to yours. Maybe I missed it, but once you have repotted into a larger container with your own soil mix, how long do you soak them to hydrate everything?
Good question. I hope I remember it for a future video ... I flush the pot really well, until the water runs clear, if it isn't. And then recheck the pot soon--like within a couple of days. Once you've hydrated it like that a couple of times, it will settle down into a normal mix (for me, anyway).
Hi Dave 👋 when you water your plants, do you first water with tap water to moisten the roots, or do you water the plants right away with fertilizer water? Edit to add... I love your directness! You're not mean but you speak your mind! It's a great quality in a human IMHO 👌 ❤🌿
I have two dozen Hoya and I didn’t have problems until recently with flatmites on my Hoya. It appears that a Hoya from Lowes or Home Depot had some and I keep my plants apart and those buggers have spread to almost all my other Hoyas. . I use systemic granulars and spray them weekly and cannot get rid of them. They pop up on the new growth chomping the leaves. I had removed damaged leaves as soon as I saw them. I have tried sulfur, jacks dead bug brew and now I have to clean all the sulfur off before I can order beneficials. Do you have this problem and what do you do?
Because of how those things munch, the systemics won't help (which is how they got the rep for being super bugs). I use my DIY spray, from the video I shot. But you must be vigilant because they have an incredibly long life cycle. I think most people feel their in the clear when new growth starts, but it's just a break in between outbreaks. Sucks, and I'm sorry.
You bet! I stopped using it because I couldn't find affordable, small bark (pet stores, the people have since told me), and it doesn't hold moisture well, which I really need. Moisture retention is the primary reason I prefer coco chips. Cheers from Iowa City
One more question- Do you buffer your coco coir/husk? Or do you use it straight out of the bag? I hear about people buffering it to prevent nutrient lockout but don't really know how to do this or if it's even necessary
In theory, these products are ready out of the bag. And I've had no long-term ill effects. But this is a timely question as I just bought some granular cal-mag for a a couple of plants. Same species Hoya that just look sickly. Since I like playing in substrate, I am going to buffer it starting with the new batch I just made, and water through the others. The products I use have been rinsed and are PH neutral, so you don't need to go through the rinse process, just hydrate. You can soak the coco in the cal-mag solution, and drain it. Or you can put the mix in a container with holes in the bottom and fill it it with the solution and let it drain out slowly. That, of course, is if you choose to do it at all. Cheers ☺
So how do I get to buy a plant from you? Hoyas are so addictive and I already have quite a few, but each time I see you introduce a new one, I have to have it. You're getting me in trouble with my son who insists I have way too many already. I thought I was buying a Jennifer but it turned out to be Joy x Jennifer. Love the hat !!!❤ super enjoy your forthright advice on Hoyas...please continue ❤
Thanks so much! "Forthright" sounds so much nicer than "brash" !
❤🌹Loved it! Have not seen you previously address bottom watering vs top watering or vice versa.
I water everything top down. In essence, my plants get flushed with each watering. Though obviously people have their preference. Cheers from Iowa 😀
I was just there and snagged a Bat Cave, Elephant, Svetlana ... and so on. Cheers from Iowa City
returned to give a like and finish watching, fell asleep last time because it was bedtime, and I was exhausted ( not because of the content!)
Hey, I'll except partial blame for putting you to sleep 🤣
Thank you o much❤❤
I'm glad you enjoyed it! 😊
As for orchids, I have mostly mini phals, but I think you'd love neofinetia (now vanda) falcata or cattleyas. I dont have a lot of space, so I tend to have smaller plants. My cattleyas are minis or compact. This was a great video. You have gorgeous plants!
Thank you! Smaller sounds better. I’m looking forward to checking these out 😊
Once I was able to grow store bought phalaenopsis, I bought a true phalaenopsis from Borneo name phalaenopsis Belina.
Btw - you’re definitely a fashionista !!

Singing AND dancing Save!? You HAVE to give us video!! 😮
The magnifying lens behind you 😂 (I have one myself and use it like 100 times per day! We are crazy people, no doubt about it 😅)
I forgot all about that being in the frame!
Actually just seen your using a bamboo cane, you would be better of with some chunky timber so it can attach and thicken up, sorry, good luck!
oooh, good tip. Thank you!
Great learning video. Btw, I love your shirts!!!!

I have only 5 Hoya's 😢 but I love them all❤
It's definitely not about how many. How well have we learned to grow them--that's what matters to me 😀
@@soberplantguy that is true
Be careful of getting into orchids, they can be quite addictive! As for recommendation, _Dendrobium nobile_ is a very popular species. You can find a lot of care info here on RUclips. _Phalaenopsis schilleriana_ is a good one, kind of a more interesting alternative to the regular complex hybrid phalaenopsis. Also paphiopedilums and phragmipediums especially cool growing ones which a lot of them are.
Need to link where you get you hoya seeds and plants Pretty pls. 😊
It is a beauty
How do I go about ordering your plants? I really love your videos.

Hands down Paphiopedilums are my favorite orchid. I love Vanda's but not for Iowa, unless you have a grow tent to keep them in. Good luck!! There are more, but love those lady slippers.
oooh, thank you. Those are beautiful !
The ones I love have variegated leaves and I tried to get the little ones so more fit in your home.
@@ttschrock7126 I think my H heuschkeliana falls into that category!
(Still slowly mixing away the rest of the stash though 😂)
And for new plants I’ve become even lazier recently….
Propagating everything in moss-perlite mix and then sticking it into pure tree fern fibre. So far only a piper didnt appreciate that, the pipers now go into pon for me.
And if I have to water more often than I want to… that plants goes over into a 3 ingredient mix
I don’t like propagating in tree fern though, so far it had a much lower success rate than moss-perlite mix for me.
This is good for plant parents who check on their plants often and tend to be on the over watering side like me 😂
It has a property that is nice for underwatering plant parents too…. It doesn’t get hydrophobic. So for someone who underwaters it would be great to put into a regular mix, to rehydrate the hydrophobic substrate quicker/easier. (If not for underwatering it would be a waste to mix it into a soil/peat/etc based mixture)
Still on the same repots here, though I did half of my friends repots in between so its ok to be behind on schedule 😊
(RUclips rarely shows community posts for me)
Im glad you have things that still make your day while suffering the effects of long Covid.
Losing the ability to do the things you love and enjoy can be devastating. But then sometimes when we find something that we can still do, it brings all the more joy!
Do you have a plant limit? I mean like a certain amount that you can manage to take care of
If we would all worry about how others would judge us for being stupid, the world would be stiff and/or fake.
As for strong opinions………… If they make sense……. 👍 I mean.. the nonsense opinions out there are strong, so they need something to counter that 😂
Looking forward to your experiment with all those different substrates! 😊
And to your styling vid and whatever other planty video you post, though I’m sure you could make the skin care successful (maybe even together with your wife?)
Will leave it at that, this comment already got waaaaaaay too long 🫢
Not too long for me! I don't really have a plant limit. But I'm not one to cram a ton of plants together, style-wise. I am careful to only grow plants that I actually care about, no matter how common they are. As for fashion/beauty/etc, I was really just teasing my wife because I reality, I have NO patience for any of it 🤣
Good to hear that you haven’t hit a limit!
Fashion/beauty/etc: expensive and it runs out
Plants: can be expensive but they multiply (somehow)
Ditto, I'm interested in another type of orchid as well.
A friend has sent me a mystery box of Hoya cuttings, and a dendrobium, which is apparently a fragrant orchid. I'm absolutely giddy 😁
@@soberplantguy Makes sense! If there's anything I learned from your channel is ... Try it and find out! I'm about to find out......✂️🤣
@@soberplantguy I'm even more aggressive with the scissors.

I got really earnest about it a couple of years ago. And agreed, drying most Hoya all the way out at best leads to slow growth, at worst, well.....

Real quick- do you mind if I ask you a question, unrelated to the video? Gee, thanks 😊
Do you have any experience with Hoya Sp.
@@soberplantguy Great advice. Yes. I. Will. Continue. To. Treat. My. Plants. For. A. Ridiculous. Amount of Time…. 😆
I water my plants about weekly with plastic pots and a chunky aroid mix. How do you keep yours hydrated in clay?
Mine work out to just about the same, except for a few in the west windows. I don't seem to have quite the problems that many have growing in terracotta.
You mention selling starters but where do I find what you are selling?
Love the videos! Where do you sell your plants?
Hey, there. I can be reached at soberplantguy@gmail.com. I will say, running a lil bit thin this time of year. Lots in the cooker, though.
LOL. Actually, I HAVE been noticing that Dave looks like he's been working out lately.
Well thank you! I get straight to watering, no time for pre-watering around here 🤣
I have two dozen Hoya and I didn’t have problems until recently with flatmites on my Hoya.
@@soberplantguy I will look for your vid on your diy spray. Thanks
Can I use orchid bark to make my soil chunky?
You bet! I stopped using it because I couldn't find affordable, small bark (pet stores, the people have since told me), and it doesn't hold moisture well, which I really need. Moisture retention is the primary reason I prefer coco chips. Cheers from Iowa City
Oh your funny Dave, you’re not a dumb, dumb. , just like I tell my husband, man are not multitask people!!!
That’s a charitable way to put it 🤣
Hey, Dave!!!! How do I get to your Hoya sales site?
Hello! I'm pretty low tech. You can email me soberplantguy@gmail.com. Happy to send a list/pics and so forth 😀
Cheers ☺
@@soberplantguy thank you so much for your response! I really appreciate it 🙏
