It’s a very simple answer. If government runs any business it’s primary focus is not to make profits, it intends to make profits but since it has indefinite source of funds (public money) it can get away with many things. Problems multiply over time and become irreversible eventually. Again I am not saying all government run businesses end up with such fate. The businesses where government sells or deals in country’s resources (again they belong to people of the country) they tend to show profits. Again that doesn’t mean they have done the best they can or done it efficiently (it won’t be even close). Actually even questioning this is a waste of time. A country plagued with so many social issues from top to grassroots it’s impossible to have state owned businesses to run efficiently. The problem is not Air India.
When Ajit Singh became CIVIL AVIATION MINISTER,he shiftned Air India's HQ to Delhi and Mumbai HQ in Nariman Point became a real estate for accomodating pvt players.Mr Singh not only sold good air crafts but also sold profitable routes to Etihad which is a questinable deal. Even after Modi govt came to power he did not shifted back air india HQ to its old and prime HQ to Air india tower in Nariman Point due to obvious reasons. If one has to trav to US or Germany has to go first to Delhi and board the plane MumbI is India' finance capital and the Tughlakian .mindset preferred to remain the air lines HQ in Delhi. Its time govt should think over some sort of tie up with TCS and handover Air India to run professionly by The Tatas who is the parent of this mismanaged national carrier. Now employees working and also retired from air india enjoy free ride to all its routes with their families. This facility needs to be reviewed to save some revenue on overhead exp.
HRM is the only difficulty with all PSU/PSB. Taking all other parameters unchanged, repair HRM and stop political/beaurecratic interference in PSU/PSB. They can do wonders.
If the Tatas would have continued running Air India we would have had a world class airline competing with the likes of Emirates, Singapore airlines and Cathy Pacifics of the world. The greatest injustice done to JRD Tata. These politicians have turned a vision into a liability.

Sir ji .... today Air India staff & service is so lousy .... no wonder no one wants to buy it .... who wants to inherit the terrible cabin crew & planes which are always late & are arrogant about it!
There are many reasons for fall of Air India, high fuel costs, competitions with other nations Air lines, the demand for passengers, reduction of job opportunities in Gulf, high debts, alarming interest rates payable, may be the causes. I would say that there will be many more losses around the corner. That's the reason why no one else will come forward to buy this Air Line.
Our Bureaucracy which runs PSU should be send to China to learn how PSU are run as they run the most efficient PSU in the world. The problem is no Bureaucrat will go to China for training they would rather go to USA and Europe were their children are studying.
Air can not operate different locations in other countries, for example it can operate only to Colombo in Sri Lanka, at the same time Sri Lankan air lines can operate all the cities in India, Air India can operate only to London in England, but British Airways can operate any where in India, likewise in Singapore, Malaysia, Kuwait, Oman, UAE, etc., These are one of the reasons for fall of Air India.
FYI, Srilanka has only one international airport that is in Colombo. Indigo is currently the market leader. indigo does not have a single Boeing 747 or 777 in it's inventory! The reason is that when you have 5 different aircrafts; the spares, the crews, the pilots all have to separate. There is no interoperabilty when you have that! That means higher costs and smaller profits! And these humongous plans can't even fill 50% of the seats! It's about time government got out of business and focused on governance!
The problem with Vijaywada or any other airport is that in India most airports haven't been thought of in long-term. What we need are airports like Changi Airports, 24x7 where they make most of their money by ancillaries which means food court, movie theatres etc. etc. Our aviation policy has been most extractive. We have the highest prices and taxes as a passenger vis-a-vis anywhere in the world. Americans can travel coast to coast for USD 100 or less. The minimum wage in U.S. is around $11 so a blue-collar worker could work for just 10 hrs. and avail a plane ticket (and this is minimum wage) while here it would be at least 2 months of salary and with at least 15-20 days booking ahead. Last minute ticket costs are way high rather than the opposite as is in U.S.
Probably the `mantri' supervises the recruitment of the flight crew as well. Two of the Air India Pilots `forgot' to retract the aircraft's landing gear after take off from Kolkotta on July 22,2017 (like driving a car with handbrakes on). They were not aware of it despite the `air drag', inability of the plane to reach higher altitude, warning indications in the new aircraft cockpit consoles and fast depleting fuel tank alerts. The Mumbai flight had to be landed at Nagpur because of fuels shortage! Some details at
The free travelling of MPs and Minister should be cancelled. Those minister including PM should first pay the money and allowing to board the Air India flight. As said Mr. RAnganathan no flights to SFO from Chennai,Bangalore Hyderabad
Very simple airindia do not want middle class to be their passenger. If the just analys the IRCTC data for route between four metropolitan city and attract the passenger from Ist class to three Tyre they will get more passengers.they fly with vaccant seat but do not reduce the fare.
Why air India, even Indian railways is a Mantri orientated. The politicians have created a mess. I hope the citizens will agree. I pressed the NOTA button in the elections and I am glad I did.
Accountability is not only when corrupt practices were being done with impunity but also after the deed is done - much later too. Why not have an inquiry and put those responsible for the losses including all these names mentioned - and put them behind bars. Captain Mohan Ranganathan is in this program bravely naming the crooks. Or else we will continue to be a third world failed country.
wouldn't make a difference. Anyways, today the bulk of aviation is with Indigo, they have 56% of the market share. And now anyways it would take almost a decade to have growth back, at least according to Boeing, see boeing.mediaroom.com/2020-10-06-Boeing-Forecasts-Challenging-Near-Term-Aerospace-Market-with-Resilience-in-Long-Term
Apart from failure of Sahara and kingfisher also ask Mohan rangnathan failure of jet airways. And what he will say on speculations Of getting new suiters for jet airways after its complete creminations
Congress & ncp is the main culprits for the downfall of AI & IA.and because of Praful Patel ncp civil aviation minister AI is dying now ,he has sucked the blood of AI by Merging AI & IA and ordering of 110 new aeroplanes.
It appears the maximum damage to the airlines was caused by Mr.Praful Patel of NCP party along with the active Babu's(IAS officers) who worked in his ministry. The idea put forth for mergers was bigger the better but unfortunately without proper merger it turned out to be a disaster may be it was deliberate on part of govt. because it thought it was easier to hand over 1 entity to their cronies & friends instead of 2 to avoid more public outcry. Unfortunately because of huge debts nobody is interested & the same goes with Bank mergers recently by the govt. & same argument is put forth. The bigger the better to compete internationally which is turning out to be a big fiasco. The hidden agenda of govt.is to offer public sector units on a platter to their cronies & friends for peanuts.
What a tragedy or maybe should say airline horror! Almost in everything that is Government run, there is such inefficiency, corruption, not what you know but who you know as Capt. Ranganathan put it.

Waiting..
The free travelling of MPs and Minister should be cancelled. Those minister including PM should first pay the money and allowing to board the Air India flight. As said Mr. RAnganathan no flights to SFO from Chennai,Bangalore Hyderabad
It's Indian, what do we expect! Does anything good comes out of this country? NO
Very simple airindia do not want middle class to be their passenger.
He is not afraid to put the responsibilities and after hearing the horror tales i support privatization.
wouldn't make a difference.
Who will bell the cat (politicians & Babu's)
Apart from failure of Sahara and kingfisher also ask Mohan rangnathan failure of jet airways. And what he will say on speculations Of getting new suiters for jet airways after its complete creminations
*Flew AI once from CDG Paris sitting under a leaking roof, in business class!*
" What has ever been right with Air India ? "
Congress & ncp is the main culprits for the downfall of AI & IA.and because of Praful Patel ncp civil aviation minister AI is dying now ,he has sucked the blood of AI by Merging AI & IA and ordering of 110 new aeroplanes.
Plus Pakistan's blockade of Indians airlines to fly over Pakistan put few nails in the coffin of Air India as well.
Jetairways
Could it be discussed further (before jumping onto King Fisher and Sahara Airlines) about Air India, so the Government and those responsible are fully exposed ?
Change the capital of India.
