Barkha Dutt speaks Film Writer - Lyricist - Poet, Javed Akhtar in the 47th episode of our podcast, 'Inside Out'. Javed Akhtar is an Indian screenwriter, lyricist, and poet. Known for his work in Hindi cinema, he has won five National Film Awards and received the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Padma Bhushan in 2007, two of India's highest civilian honors. Akhtar gained recognition as part of the duo Salim-Javed, and achieved breakthrough success as a screenwriter with 1973's Zanjeer. He went on to write the films Deewaar and Sholay, both released in 1975. Later, he garnered praise for his work as a lyricist, winning the National Film Award for Best Lyrics five times and the Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist eight times. Notably, Akhtar campaigned for the Communist Party of India (CPI) and their candidate in the 2019 Indian general election and served as a member of parliament in the Rajya Sabha. In recognition of his contributions, he was honored with the Richard Dawkins Award in 2020.

I love Javed Akhtar's intellect. I am aure the whole world, knowingly or unknowingly, is intellectually moving towards the same path which Javed Akhtar has taken.
How can anyone be an atheist and a Muslim at the same time? This is a duplicitous description.
Culturally. I am an atheist Hindu. I love my festivals and consider religion as a set of stories.

No, it isn't. There are Atheist Jews, Atheist Hindus, Atheist Christians and so on. People who identify with the culture of their upbringing but do not believe in the theology. This is quite common in the world. You need to look at the world, and look past the narrow and simplistic narratives found in the hyper religious politics of India.
Not it is not. Atheism is not a religion. People can be born in a Muslim family and be atheist. There are several. Same with Hindus, Christians and people of other faiths. There is nothing duplicitous here. There is no conspiracy against you. Calm down.

Ovais, that is a perfectly reasonable place to be in for any individual. For outsiders, the most important issue is not any "faith" itself but one's stand on faith-related human aspects - be they conflicts between individuals or conflicts between groups. That's where the tension between faith and non faith exists and is the hardest to manage..

I always think about culture, religion and society and their evolution with regards to each other, and I also thought in line with Javed Sahab's perspective on festivals but after this interview I have much more clarity on my thoughts. He is a legend I always admire his talks and only could wish to have such conversations with him on such societal topics personally, but a man could dream.

'Atheist Muslim' is oxymoron. It's the belief that makes one a Muslim; you don’t become Muslim by just being born to Muslim parents. Those saying one can be culturally Muslim and be an Atheist by belief need to know that Islam is not a culture. It's a religion with certain necessary beliefs; you reject or leave that belief, and you are automatically out of its fold. Its like saying I am an 'Atheist Theist'. Logical impossibility!!!
Christmas’s origin is the pagan winter solstice festival in many parts of Europe which was turned to a Christian festival. But it was Pope Julius 1 that linked the day with Jesus’s birth. So basically church leaders in their christianisation project just co-opted existing pagan festivals. Another example is Easter from the pagan festival of Eostre, goddess of fertility.

Most people perform a drama on a day to day basis that they are religious. This becomes a habit and then we start relating to all kinds of stories. But it is perfectly possible to be an atheist and yet identify with the community one was born into, the people one grew up with, to feel strongly if they are demonized as Muslims in India are being today. One can reject the religious beliefs of one's family and even community, and yet love them and care about them. That is Javed sa'ab's position.

For goodness sake, we should stop calling Urdu a language. Urdu is like Hinglish, with Parsi/Arabic/Turkish words thrown into a native Indian language - call it Hindi or Kaurvi or Hindustani. You wouldn't call Hinglish a separate language, would you?
