This may be my favourite Thrice song ever.
Dustin's lyrics about God are so masterfully written. They are one of those that I admire the most,, and that's a funny thing, considering I'm nowhere near a believer.
Neither am I a believer. But even still; these lyrics completely encompass my constant struggle between my hope heaven is there so I can see my Dad again, and the fact that I really don't believe it is there. Shit tears me up all the time man. Dammit Dustin. Why you do this!?
There is a GOD ,seek Him out .And you will find him. 😎
I don't wish to. But thank you kindly for the advice. Peace be with you.
It's not about God. It's about whether there's an afterlife.
@@XxXCaptainJakkXxX its deffinatly about God whose light is shining through the cracks and curtains
The way one often feels inside their head during depression.
There's nowhere to hide, be terrified, it's all inside your head!
So good.. soooooo good..
What do you think it means?
such an intense moment in the song. I love it
I've thought about that a lot myself. I really think it a day trip in the mind of a split personality patient. Personality (A) feels trapped their empty "room" and the windows are the patients eyes that are covered up. Personality (B) is trying to keep the other contained so they can control the narrators mind. Then you try and figure out if personality (A) has been trapped its entire existence or only long enough to forget how the world looks from their perspective. Let me know what you think about that.
It's about existential crisis pretty much. The "room" is the world we live in and know, our tangible reality so to speak. The window is sort of a viewpoint of the world beyond this world, or the afterlife. It's boarded up so all we are familiar with is the present reality but glimmers of light and wind and sound come through to tell us there is a world beyond what we know. What feels like certain evidence when experiencing it that can in no way be proven to anybody as having been real. The note scratched in the wall is basically the way he fool ourselves into believing that a life beyond what we know and can prove is real is imaginary, and any indications otherwise are all inside our head.
Of course, people are welcome to their own interpretation but given Dustin's spiritual views and background as a very religious lyricist I can all but assure that this is the intended meaning of the song.
Unsure if anyone else has made a comment pointing it out, but the verse sections of this track are written in 7/8. The transition from 7/8 to 4/4 (or 8/8,) between the verses and the chorus was so clean that I didn't notice it until a friend pointed it out to me and caused me to count the beats. Love the odd time signature in this song especially. Gives the progression a very stunted, brutal feeling, perfectly captures that boarded up "window", with a perfect release of tension in the chorus.
As an extra note: I want to say the ending part is written in 6/8 just off of counting the beats, may have miscounted but I thought that was also interesting.
Just plain bad ass. Best band ever.
So GOOD!! Welcome back Thrice.
This is more thrice than thrice lol so good
Discerner I like to think about the outside of the room as the world after this one, there's so many interesting interpretations, and the music is so beautiful, melancholic and fitting for the story. I absolutely love it, probably my favorite song of all time.
Damn...
Definitely
@@Jim-ee6du I think it's about that cave Plato talked about where everyone could only see shadows on the wall but they could never see the outside. They had evidence that there was something more to reality, but then again, maybe all that existed in the world was the shadows and there was nothing more to them.
All that I know's within the walls
of this room where there's a window
Roughly boarded up
It's true the gaps are patched but even through
the tiny cracks, I feel the wind blow
I see a light it's strange as you
And there's nothing I can say
There's no way I can prove
That there's a place
Beyond this room
But still, there's something in the way
The light comes shining through
And in the way
The curtains move
Late in the night I lay awake
My eyes fixed on the window
Swing my ears until
I thought
That I might have heard a song
Somehow hiding in the soft glow
All this time, and never knew
And there's nothing I can say
There's no way I can prove
That there's a place
Beyond this room
But still, there's something in the way
The light comes shining through
And in the way
The curtains move
I found a note scratched in the wall
In a pained and earnest scrawl
The hand I recognized
was somehow mine already slight with dread
There's no wind and there's no light
There's no song in here at night
There's nowhere to hide, we're terrified
It's all inside your head
Still, there's something in the way
The light comes shining through
And in the way
The way the curtains move
I'm hoping the naysayers of this album are drinking their own tears now.
this so is just so grimy I love it. might be my favourite.
same here. I love the imagery too
Possibly my favorite from this AMAZING album, such a contagious and inspiring attempt!
I'm so blown away... I don't know how I'm going to make it through a whole day of work listening to our terrible music.
you can do it.. just know thrice will be waiting when you get home. this is gold!
Hello 7/8, we meet again. This is one of my favourites on the album. Has that early 00's post-hardcore grunge sound I love.
Love when they use funky time signatures! The seamless time signature change for the chorus is what makes this song great for me.
the riff at 2:58 is in 6/4, split into 7/8 and 5/8 groupings, and at 3:14 they do a 4/4 drum part over it and it sounds so damn good. I've never really heard them do anything that blatantly complex before. Sounds like something out of a prog metal band's repertoire (though probably not as extreme as those bands would go)
This album is remarkably un-progressive though.. Vheissu is the only album of Thrice's that I can enjoy. Unfortunately, I expected this, considering the direction they went in with their previous few albums.
Peace
***** there are a few good songs, but as a whole it isn't particularly experimental or adventurous. Vheissu was definitely their peak.
divinasion whaaaaaaaaaaa hear that?
Damn fine album. Been listening to them since 2001. Love.
This better be part of their live set for the next year.
I also hope they make a music video this song. This side of Thrice needs to be put to the masses. This song grows on oneself like no-other.
Album of the Year... hands down...
i'm so blown away. just...can't even.
So far my favorites are hurrican, the window, whistleblower, stay with me, and oh yeah the rest of the album as well.
I'm so happy with this, god, people, this is their best album since, I dont know
it's unreal...
Their best since Vheissu.
Jason LovesABR Another Thrice video, I'd assume.
I feel equally
Love this man!! I love the radiohead influence
Man this album is just full of surprises. Loving this song
Easily their best album. Song after song it's just hit after hit to the senses. What a comeback.
The chorus is a pure feeling that makes you scream until your lungs collapse, an outstanding band. Long life to Thrice.
My favorite song on the album. These lyrics are provocative. Especially the last line "... The way the curtains move"
will personally fight whoever dislikes this
we have two people to fight
I was gonna say it just to be a dick but i honestly cant bring myself to do it, even as a joke! Fuckin awesome
3 years later...have you gained the strength to kick 80 peoples ass’s?
I preffer Vheissu Thrice's sound, but this is okay too. They had such raw and heavy sound. I liked it a lot more.
@@julianwhite5430 For Thrice, we would do anything.
the progy feel to this song gives me shivers
This is on a whole different level. Thrice is back and better than ever.
I agree. Had a co worker show me Alchemy Index when it came out. Further looked through other Thrice albums but I found that this band is never the same. They do what they wanna do when it comes to music. And make it sound good. I'll be honest though. I didn't care for some of their earlier stuff. But this album takes the cake. IMO....the best they've made.
Drum tones are gorgeous.
This song is beautiful in every aspect.
top 10 of all time!
Such a good song. Such a good album.
Oh boy this song is so good holy cow I love this :O
Thrice is the rock band I've been looking for !!!!!! I love how they have clean and inspiring lyrics while not sounding cliche or super happy! I love the math rock elements but how it still has a clear, strong melody that isn't to all over the place. I love Dustin's voice. It's clear but rough and it's not "perfect" but it's not "ugly". Some rock music just sounds gross and other rock music sounds too pristine and clear-cut. This is just the perfect combination of complex and simple, clean and ruff, angry but beautiful!
¿Me recomiendas algunas bandas/artistas con buenas líricas? porfavor, enserio lo necesito-
@@AccountOne-g5u i think citizens "youth" album sounds alot like this one
I swear to God thrice is brilliant
The lyrics behind every song are so meaningful and strong, good job lads :)
This is my take on the lyrics, knowing someone who went to a broken church with Dustin. Reality, this cell that most of us are stuck in, seems to be all that exists. But sometimes he thinks he can see, hear or sense something beyond this life. There's absolutely no way to prove something exists after we die, but he sees signs. He feels that there MUST be something outside of this, he HOPES there is. Or maybe... IT'S ALL INSIDE OF HIS HEAD.
Love that filthy ass guitar tone. Reminds me of "yellow belly" in that aspect.
god damn it thrice never fails
Thrice should do a song titled 'The Way The Curtain Moves'
Digging it, has a Soundgarden sound to it.
welcome the fuck back Thrice. what a fucking comeback.
mad love for this album
Everything I hoped for...right here. Jesus Christ..
A great song with a greater finale, so heavy
After almost 2 years, I have to say: This record is still fantastic and lost nothing of it’s power. 1000000/10
Badass Album!
As a punk/hardcore metal head kid, I always respected thrice and wanted to like them but couldnt get past the "sunny day realestate/rufio/yellowcard" voice he used to sing with. The musicianship and lyrics were awesome though. I came across Black Honey the other day and was amazed. Listend to this whole album alot since then. Is any other albums like this one? Help a brotha out Thrice fans.
This one feels so 1995 ❤️
I think I have found my album fave, so much going on in this wonderful song ^_^
Cool, original melody and great vocals that remind me of Chris Cornell.
dude, holy hell this is good stuff.
holy shit. holy shit. it's so good. how do you write shit this good. fan boyin over here
Amazing.
love you guys!!
Best hands down
3:14 Time to headbang!
fuck my life. this is awesome
Dope ending!
I'm hearing serious echoes of Radiohead's "There There," put through a sludgy blender with some hopping around different time signatures. Gawd I've missed these guys
Thrice going almost Pelican with this one.
More like radiohead in the intro.
Amazing as usual
This is good.
How do you guys write entire albums that stop me from whatever it is I'm doing so I can listen more closely??? Jeez, See you at the Observatory, Santa Ana, October 6th!!!!
Love the album. This is very similar to 'pillow of your bones' by Chris Cornell.
The place outside the walls is also beyond the pines.
Horribly boring lyrics, aren't they? :-D just kidding, you're right, but i love both of them, especially the lyrics
Good Stuff
this and Wake Up sound just like Beggars and I absolutly love that as well as the rest of the songs. Shit, they're all so good
Its like heavy Radiohead. omg ,
YESSSS
yes.
Yes!
Its a mixture of There There and The National Anthem
Alan Araujo this is what I said!
Ed's tone on this one!
Holy shit...Am I the only one who realized that at around the 3 minute mark this song sounded like the starting of "Firebreather" from the Alchemy Album Of Fire? Just listen....So good...love what these guys do!
that's his voice, but yeah, the heavy guitars and layered droning sounds reminds me of Fire a lot. A lot of this album's songwriting reminds me of Fire.
that song is fucking perfect
Reminds me of There There by Radiohead
Jaren Young Yeah, that's exactly what I thought
This is best possible way to say/sing the word "hue". Gets me every time
The whole album is just gaaaahhhh
40 grit sandpaper on my eardrums. Wow.
This is a riff that Hurt has used before, but the way Thrice plays it sounds so much more deeper.
ruclips.net/video/0lk4NlqJlKY/видео.html You must hear this new one !!!
this was so good i almost threw up
wooooooooooooooooooo
very radiohead, awesome
fuck i love thrice
begining is so radioheadish
why does it have so few plays!?
Because there are a lot of morons out there that would rather listen to garbage Desiigner's "Panda" than great music like this. They'd rather hear some idiot rapping about killing people, doing drugs and objectifying women than deep, powerful lyrics about someone's worldview changing.
it only came out like a week ago come on man. some songs don't have this many plays after 3 years.
have your ever noticed that thrice has stopped talking 'bout god in this new album? even the name of the album TBEITBN) I mean they are christians (or at lest they were) and in the christianiti ''god'' is everywhere. This song is like a reprsentation of what im saying. He has some doubts about the ''heaven'' but even that he S T I L L has faith.
This entire album is about politics and society. That is clear from their interviews and dustin's twitter. The title is reference to smart phone and social media addiction.
Would anyone say that the time signatures of the ending riffs basically go from 6/8 to 6/4? Just curious...
I've been counting most of the song in 7/4, myself. Haven't really counted the ending riffs, just the drums through the rest of the song.
At least the intro is in 7/4, maybe 7/8. I think I'd agree with what you said about the ending of the song going from 6/8 to 6/4, though it might just be the cymbal going into halftime while still in 6/8.
it seems unlikely it would be one bar of 6/8 and 2 bars of 6/4. I think the half-time on the cymbal slows it down, not the actual time signature itself. I count 2 bars of 6/8. I just hit things with sticks though, I'm not an expert in the denominator of time signatures :P
Ahhhh.... I was really going off of the pattern of the guitar hits between the two sections, only to find out they're the same pattern on both parts. Nevermind then!
I, too, hit things with sticks. I also play drums!
Yeah, it's 7/4 in the verses, 4/4 in the chorus and riffs and then 6/8 in that last section, with really quirky accents. Love it!
When no gives a shit about the Fray lol
How is no one talking about how the main riff is almost exactly the middle part of Paranoid Android?
was lookin for this comment
0 people mis-clicked the dislike button.
Would've been really cool if for the first chorus at 0:48 instead of going into the singing chorus, they cut the vocals out, and then started the chorus vocals at 1:00.
Get chills thinking of how awesome that would have sounded.
First
when i realized ive been listening to their music but im not subcribed
