This song brings tears to my eyes every time. Reminds me of the days I had suicidal thoughts. I felt things would never get better. But I held onto Jesus. I doubted Him. I was losing my faith. But I didn’t let go of it. I was unsure of the future. I never felt so alone. I was completely lost. But through it all. Through the hopelessness I held on to Him still. He brought me through to the other side. He showed me that I could trust Him. That I could gain the peace I was searching for. I love you Lord. You were there the whole time. I love you.
What a beautiful comment. Thank you for sharing that.
Dustin has kept me alive for the last 20 years. 🙏
Thank you
Thrice is the best band ever! 🔥But you need to go listen to Whispering Wolf by SLT right now ! You’re missing out 🤘🐺🥁🐺🤘:::
Contender for best track on the album for me.
it's the best one on the album to me hands down. I love the album as a whole but I think from this song to the end is the best part of the Album with the first four tracks being good but I just feel like this song changed the tone of the album from the first four.
I agree, amazing song!
i'm glad i'm not the only one who thinks this!!
Definitely the best song, with whistleblower being #2
I'd say this song #1 and hurricane #2 and #3 black honey
There's just something about the way he sings "For all I know, we'll never see the sun" that gets me every time. It just sounds good.
you and us all brother
Thrice is the best band ever! 🔥But you need to go listen to Whispering Wolf by SLT right now ! You’re missing out 🤘🐺🥁🐺🤘.!
Literally brings tears to my eyes
Listened to this while my mum was fighting a losing battle with cancer, unfortunately she lost in 2018. It gives me chills every time i listen to it.
I'm sorry for your family's loss. I relate to you completely. Take care stay blessed
This one really moves me to tears. I went back to school to pursue a degree in engineering in my late 20's, and to work on carbon capture technology in hopes of being a part of the solution to climate change. One of the things that has kept me motivated has been the birth of my son. I want him to have a safe and stable world when I'm gone, and will do everything I can to make that happen, even if I'm not successful. This song speaks to me on so many levels; the struggle against climate change, struggling financially with my wife.
This whole album is pure magic ...
Thrice forever FTW
Agreed
This was their last song at terminal 5 in nyc a few days ago, and it brought tears to my eyes. I'm a huge Tolkien nerd and big faith guy and this being played with a bunch of different kinds of people singing along brought me hope.
Someone recently posted them playing this song live and at the end hearing the whole crowd singing it together gave me chills.
This song means a lot to me as well, I think if I heard it live I'd be crying my eyes out
Faith does nothing... I'm aware that -obviously also depending on what experiences and real hardships one had&has to go through- together with *actually wanting and trying* not to give up completely, it's required to cope but the choices (to do good and preserve whatever good things exist, if not multiplying them whenever possible) and a truly balanced brain and soul in conjunction with action (setting an example for others), is what keeps us going and what will achieve something better, if that ever happens with the mentalities tht are popular in practice....
Till then, we'll be enjoying the consequences of whatever we believe, accept, parrot/promote, love/hate, find funny, and so on... aka whatever we maintain (mostly stupidity; be it in the form of immaturity, complexes, selfishness, greed, some illogical fears or tribalism/the need to be accepted and belong to some sort of side, army, extreme... hardly ever a real family altho that's what we/most of us deeply lack I guess).
This is so good but you must hear "The Wave" or "Whispering Wolf" by SLT 🤘🐺🎸😊
This song is about fighting on even when it seems pointless...
Any songs interpretation is subjective. To me it reads as keeping your faith in something that you can't be assured is guarenteed or even real.. And living on in life, one that everyone dies in... Fighting the long defeat.
Anyways banger of a track prob best on the album.
[Verse 1]
The tyranny of deterioration
It worries me that it's all just a waste of time
Taking one step forward, two steps back
Still I believe there's a thread through the thorns
Yeah I believe that somewhere it's warm
And I believe that it's ever bright beyond this black
[Chorus]
So keep holding on to hope without assurance
Holding on to a memory of light
But will the morning come?
For all I know we’ll never see the sun
But together we’ll fight the long defeat
[Verse 2]
The suffering that I see all around
It's enough to keep me crashing down till I
I lie wrecked and reeling from these falls
Still I believe there's a word in the wire
And I believe there's a way through the fire
And I believe there's a joy that blooms beyond these walls
[Chorus]
So keep holding on to hope without assurance
Holding on to a memory of light
But will the morning come?
For all I know we’ll never see the sun
But together we’ll fight the long defeat
wow this is so good
thank you!

My dad was diagnosed a few years ago with ALS, this song has been a light during those dark moments, hopefully him, myself and his grandson can face it all together. Thanks Thrice.
I hope four years later now you all are doing good.
got "Together we'll fight the long defeat" tattooed on my arm. Thank you Thrice for inspiring hope through tough times.
It's a reference to LotR :)
@@MySerpentine i know!
Thrice has written many great songs throughout the years, but I can definitively say that this is my all-time favorite. The euphoric energy from the start is almost overwhelming. The lead melody is urgently inspiring on a deeply human level. The lyrics and vocal delivery carry so much emotion. It's a poignant experience from start to finish.
Thrice is the best band ever! 🔥But you need to go listen to Whispering Wolf by SLT right now ! You’re missing out 🤘🐺🥁🐺🤘:)
this is how i feel everyday waking up fighting and battling my depression
You got this, kick it’s ass!!
We are all fighting the long defeat in a sense. We will have our time and our end but we can do it together and we can hold our heads high.
An absolutely beautiful song. It gets better each time I play it and it holds a very personal meaning to me: I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when I was 14. It feels like you're fighting a battle you know that you'll lose but you keep fighting. A year or two ago (time flies by) my brother got diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, too. He was in his early 30s. The lyric of "together we'll fight the long defeat" held even more meaning than it did before.
That outro being the last minute of the song is absolutely pure bliss.
Love it when these guys do atmospheric songs.
Everything they've ever written is master crafted
This is so good but you must hear "The Wave" or "Whispering Wolf" by SLT 🤘🐺🎸
This song could not be more relevant now.
This song has been stuck in my head since I first heard it, so good.
I've played with them once they are truly masters of their craft
Yeah, me THRICE!
These lyrics always gives me so much strength..! One of my favorites! ❤
Alone, I fight the long defeat.
The end of the song just reminds me of just death. Slowly as the song goes on and on the singer slows fades and gets weaker as the song plays on. Such a sad but timely song.
As it just happens my mother in law is in the hospital and we are living this song out, we are fighting the long defeat with each other.... Thank you thrive for taking painful moment in your lives and helping others get through it with music.
My goodness, here I am and now my mother is now going to pass in less than a week. I’m not as sad ironically about my mother passing as I was when my mother in law passed away. But maybe it’s due to conflict between us and now seeing the state that bitterness has led her too. I just pray she has made her peace with the Lord and hope to see her again one day without sin in the next life.
"Together we'll fight the long defeat." - Thrice
Thrice is the best band ever! 🔥But you need to go listen to Whispering Wolf by SLT right now ! You’re missing out 🤘🐺🥁🐺🤘
After listening to TBEITBN for far too many repeats, this one is their best song hands down. Death From Above, Hurricane and Whistleblower rock as well, but they can't beat this. The lyrics, the emotions in the second verse, the breakdown to the haunting outro. It's Thrice at the absolute top of their game.
Peak thrice is Vheissu, Alchemy 1-4 and this album.
I love this song so much that I told my fiance I'm getting our wedding date tattooed with "together we'll fight the long defeat" while we watched thrice play this live in salt lake city . So now this song means the world to us. ☺
The ending paints the picture so clear, "together we'll fight the long defeat"... its a reality check, but yet encouraging.
Romans 8:18-25 is the example of the long defeat.
It's actually a reference to The Lord of the Rings. In The Return of the King, Galadriel says "we have fought the long defeat" and the song is based around this concept.
Witness Me Yeah i remember reading that before too, but also Dustin is a christian and he has referenced the bible in a metaphorical way in alot of his songs.
I haven't actually spoken with Dustin about what the song was written about... but who really cares. That is what makes music so personal. We all get to write our own story about what it means. They as artists, create, to give to us. It becomes our own soundtrack to our own lives.
For me, I picture this song about people just surviving life together. A couple, who pledge themselves to each other saying "Together, we will fight this long defeat of life." in knowing that in the end they will die and be nothing, but they will stand together forever, and face it together. "In the long defeat" meaning life.
Lars O'Keefe You care, I care, we all care that's whats awesome about music we can take what we want from it. From Dustins own words he said it was taken from Tolkien who also is a Christian and for me I like to know, I enjoy finding truth so when I understand the real meaning of the song it gives me the most fulfilling version I can hear.
Glad to see another Christian
This song resonates so deep it brings a lot of things to the surface, the first time I really listened to the lyrics my throat tightened and I got teary eyed. Just blown away in a profoundness I've never felt.
The members of this group play very well together. There is a nice balance of rock ballads flowing here.
makes me want to cry every time I hear this. it's the most inspirational, hopeful song I've ever heard
Thrice is the best band ever! 🔥But you need to go listen to Whispering Wolf by SLT right now ! You’re missing out 🤘🐺🥁🐺🤘
The only song that's keeping me going right now.
I really can't believe I havnt heard this band before. My first visit and I was just scrolling deep into RUclips. And had this on my speaker and had tears of hope for happiness
feel like this might be my favorite from this album...
feel like this might be one of my favorite thrice songs of any album
These riffs are gigantic. Incredible.
I love Thrice! I feel the passion that goes into every piece of art they create.. this song sums it all up nicely.
I always go back to this song whenever I go through any kind of struggle. Keeps me hopeful when things are in the shitter.
DAMN THRICE YOU NEVER CEASE TO IMPRESS ME. IF YOU READ THIS YOU GUYS ARE EVERYTHING I LOVE ABOUT MUSIC AND MY REAL MUSIC HEROES!!!!! YOU ALWAYS HAVE A MESSAGE THAT MOVES ME & INSPIRES ME TO PLAY GUITAR AND PLAY FROM THE HEART.
This song is so empowering.
I really, really wish they would release this song as a single.
I love thrice so much ❤❤❤
I've heard about 5 songs in this album.. it's really good and full of layers to approach it from. It IS an album as a whole rather than just singles and it really sets a mood. I really like what this band has evolved into since The Alchemy.
Together we will fight the long defeat, I really needed this.
Awesome song the actually sing amazing
thrice is the best ever but you must hear “Whispering Wolf” or “The Wave” by SLT 🤘🐺
First time I listened to this song was on the commute to work and I remember hearing this and feeling emotional. The song just hit me, bringing back the same emotion that Thrice gave me in my high school days. Absolutely love this song and so glad Thrice is making music again
The new Deftones one did that same thing for me. Looks like it's a good time for older bands making good shit again.
My expectations were high but they have exceeded my expectations! Thrice are fucking brilliant.
I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW I'M JUST FINDING OUT ABOUT THIS RECORD!!! YOU GUYS KEEP BLOWING ME AWAY!!!! LOVE IT!!!! GOD BLESS!!!
The more I listen to this one, the more I get from it. It's a very passionate song, and I dunno. I just feel a lot with it. haha
Damn! This song is just amazing! Greetings from Chile, hoping to see Thrice touring in South America

Easily the best song on the album. Just amazing.
it's one of the best songs I've heard
Thank you for the music. So glad I am here in this time and era to hear it.
by far one of my favorite songs off the album
I agree, I have a feeling this is the song the guys enjoyed recording the most on the album. A "feel good" being in sync together jam session is how this masterpiece was created.
Album is amazing. kinda like one long ass song. Lyrics . I love.
This and in exile give me chills. Still.
Welcome back Vintage Thrice
Not the Thrice I remember, but great work!!
i want to see this entire album all the way through at a show. good lawd. that bridge into the chorus fucking a plus plus plus. so many plus's?
That would be sick!
Absolutely love it. A standout from the first couple listens.
Accidentally got here searching for the song with the same title by Deathspell Omega. Not disappointed
This is so good but you must hear "The Wave" or "Whispering Wolf" by SLT 🤘🐺🎸
A description of the world as it loses itself to man's directionlessness, which is precisely what we see today. I'm with you Dustin arm and arm - together we'll fight the long defeat..
In love with this song
Hurricane, blood on the sand, wake up, the long defeat and black honey are just all really good tracks
Besides Hurricane and Blood on the Sand, this is the best song on the album. so chill and incredibly comforting. Also, that guitar though!
Its like a response to Flags of Dawn, my personal favourite
This just occurred to me, so I checked the comments to see if anyone else came to that conclusion. Spot on I think!
Wow! This song is my new inspiration for the times we are going thru right now. Covid will be The Long Defeat!
Thrice is the best band ever! 🔥But you need to go listen to Whispering Wolf by SLT right now ! You’re missing out 🤘🐺🥁🐺🤘!

wow this song is soo innovative. this is incredible
I thought I'd come here just to comment this is my favourite of the album, kept it on repeat for a couple of hours...
This song is about doing the right thing, just because you know it's the right thing to do, even to your own demise. True heroism. Beautiful
Thrice is the best band ever! 🔥But you need to go listen to Whispering Wolf by SLT right now ! You’re missing out 🤘🐺🥁🐺🤘!-!
no its not. entirely about not giving up. nothing to do with doing the right thing
Holding on holy snikeies!! What a return Thrice 👏👏🔥🔥😎🤘🤘🍻🍻

I love this damn song!! I find myself just closing my eyes while listening...
Nice ending
This is so good but you must hear "The Wave" or "Whispering Wolf" by SLT 🤘🐺🎸
in love with this song!!!!! this album is💥!
So good to have you back Thrice. Such a strong come back! So awesome especially with not being a fan of Major/Minor, though loved all prior albums from Identity Crisis on. Look forward to getting to know this album better. You guys together making music is magic. Thanks for uploading, I'll def add to the collection once I've some disposable cash.
This ties for there best song ever, along with anthology
This Album is too much. fucking fantastic.
So damn good... I may be wrong but I think Dustin took inspiration for the name/lyrics from professor J.R.R. Tolkien?? Just google "Tolkien long defeat" to see exactly what I mean.
Definitely doesn't seem like a coincidence
Dustin have always been into tolkien work, theres a couple song he wrote where he took inspiration from some of is book i think .
He says it's based on the idea of believing in the good you do and see in the world even when the world paints a bleaker picture to try and make you believe otherwise. Definitely a Tolkien concept. I like to think the song is rooted in depression and that fighting it is continuing the long defeat. However there is hope if you look for it.
Anyone who believes in fighting the Long Defeat believes in the Eucarastrophe, or else our hope in in vain.
que gran canción
I hardly know this album....😭must listen to Thrice more. My music taste has expanded a lot tho. Still my favorite band 🙌🦾💯🍻
Thrice is the best band ever! 🔥But you need to go listen to Whispering Wolf by SLT right now ! You’re missing out 🤘🐺🥁🐺🤘
Only powerful songs
Best on the new album for sure :D
The Long Defeat is making something long for sure! these jeans ain't getting any looser!
You guys wrote this track and the others remotely? You're crazy. This is perfect. I can barely get a song done writing in any of the bands I have been in being in the same room.
to be honest, writing a song all by yourself is very and very difficult.. I have so many respect for song writers.. I have this concept of a song in mind.. after 3 years, i'm standing with 2 riffs 1 verse and a chours.. I still don't know what to do with it.. I play classic guitar and gonna buy electro this summer (hopefully) so i may try to add electro in to that but yeah.. even though it's like a medieval song concept.. it's hard.. I have respect for guys like Mike Shinoda etc.. They're simply geniuses.
Reşat Yıldırım Linkin Park is my favorite band next to Thrice and Crown The Empire, and you're so right, both Dustin and Mike are amazing at writing songs, and I while I play guitar, I still haven't been able to really write anything.
Sir. Cookie I can write a bit. Weird thing is, i'm writting one right now :) This one is, well, better than all most every non-sense i've ever written but there's one song that I'm kind of proud of myself called "Castle Gates". I don't know how the hell did i write that (in 3 years for lyrics and 2 years to set the riffs etc.) but me and my friends love it, my girlfriend cries when she hear me playing it (I don't know why really, only the last verse was dedicated to her :) ) I would love to share it and have some feedback but with a bit of paranoiac in my head, i'm scarred that It's gonna be stolen or smth like that. Because i even showed it to some really good musicians around me and they adored it and even gave me suggestions to make it sound better. Only thing i can tell you is, keep playing, occasionally you will have inspration (i maybe wasting mine right now), then once you have it, instantly pick your guitar up and start playing, set the tune and the lyrics.. And once in a while, play that song, you will correct your mistakes, maybe even add more sound to admire.. Keep playing though, It's the most important aspect!
no they didnt theres videos on youtube of recording tbeitbn and theyare all together in the studio
getting Sixx AM out of some of this, which is cool, but as an old school fan I need time to accept the change. nonetheless unbelievable musicianship👍
Welcome back, my dear friends. Welcome back.
first comment! this album is sick...
reminds me of my struggle with terminal brain cancer. #budfightscancer
Hope you get better man, god bless yah 🙏🏼
And I believe!
Reminds me of a band that was called The Mayfield Four.
Fuck the Mayfield Four.
So I heard this song from my coworker who I don't talk to anymore but we fucking stare at each other at work like crazy but fuck I miss her and fuck this is a good fucking song N❤️ I miss u and wish we fix are friendship 😢
Early favorite
f'n love this shit!.......
He sounds almost like Adam Gontier from Three Days Grace in this song.
This song always makes me think of Wheel of Time.
Haha yeah. "A memory of Light"
