Yo Max, this is why you're the man. I really hate playing people online because of that drama. I'm not super hardcore in competitive gaming simply because I stretch myself throughout many different genres, and games have a whole different meaning to me. But I grew up with fighting games and could understand them all the way right before the frame counting and and crazy technical lingo. I do crap and it's cool and works with me. Watching you gave me hope to beat my friends that do. I got a lot better, but I always met horrible attitudes online. Hype is what makes the fighters I play fun, drama kills competitive gameplay for me. It's always the win for them, never the fun. I wish I could play those more like you. I just started getting back online, but dood, keep up the good attitude. you do so much more than you know, and maybe you could help get rid of those horrid attitudes
What makes the genre the greatest is the lasting power of it's games, the love players have for those games and the dedication they are willing to put in to those games. There is no other genre where players spend years honing their skills and will travel thousands of miles to play each other. There is no other genre that can even begin to touch the hype that Fighting games consistently produce.
Ultimately fighting games are the most exciting games to watch. One big example was when on Curleh Mustache Marlinpie was facing Alukard NY. That was the most HYPED match I've ever seen. Recently, a friend of mine named Abel won the Injustice tournament that was held on Monterrey (a city in Mexico). And also a guy named Yahiko won the UMVC3 tournament held there, he even went to fight at EVO against Chris G and other awesome pros out there.
Amazing real talk Max. I also grew up in arcades around same time. Unfortunately around that time I was absolutely terrible at all fighting games, I would be blown up every single time I fought someone remotely skilled so I really didnt develep that level of appreciation for them at the time. But the situation you describe is very similar to how Initial D was for me. So community was just so engrossing and half the time I just sit and watch other people play.
Max, you talking about arcades in the past tense kind of got me a little in the blue knowing that those good times have passed and that arcades have seen their best days; would love to hear in another real talk whether you believe arcades are dead. Nice vids.
I definitely love this kind of stuff Max! I love learning more about the history of where things come from such as the hype and I love hearing what people have to say about different topics. You got me hooked on your video about how rage quitting is hurting the scene and I definitely love hearing what you have to say man. Keep up the great work!
I would like you to adress the topic of new people trying to get intro the genre. What do they have to expect? What games/gear (such as sticks, obviously) would you recommende to start with. How to deal with the pressure of the 1on1 scenario + the drama. I'm curious to join the FGC myself and will probably do so in the near future, i'd like to hear some tipps for newbies.
Good vid max. Thanks for the good work brotha. Watching your channel the past couple years has definitely gotten me hype for fighting games. A year or two ago I only owned SSFIV, and now I own SSFIV, SFXT, UMVC3, MK9, and Injustice. I'm not too big on SFXT and MK, but I love SSFIV and Injustice and I'm learning the ropes of Marvel.
A topic I would like to see you touch upon is online tactics vs. offline. How some players adopt a playstyle or strat that only is effective online and/or techniques relegated to offline due to latency issues.
I am 26 years old and never had the chance to experience the Arcade Scene. By the time I was old enough to reach the arcade cabinet and was able to go to the Arcade by myself, the scene died and left -____-
The most hype moment I ever experienced was at an arcade in Atlanta, GA. I walked in and saw MK2, my personal fave and hot game at the time. A huge group of dudes gathered around and laughing and oohing and aahing at the local champ's streak and skill. So I put my quarter on the screen and wait my turn, all the while just watching the body count rise, but feeling very sure of my eventual overthrow of the king. I get on and own the guy so hard that he jumps everybody else just to get his rematch.
I gravitated towards competitive FPS and Fighting Games because of how fast you get to the hype. Even the down time between hype generates hype. So good.
I like all most types of games (mmos, mobas, rts, fighting, racing, story, rpg, etc) what I want to know is how do I balance all of these in my normal everyday life. When I was a kid I had a lot more free time but now that I'm 22 and live on my own and have to work I barely find time to play games. Whenever I play i can usually only play 1 game for a couple hours. Whether it be me raiding in wow, or playing a fps, playing some fighting matches, doing some ranked league or smite matches but I always feel like I miss out on other things. It seems really hard to juggle and I cant just move on from game to game because then I get rusty at games. Like if I dont play fighting games for a couple weeks I can come back to them and go on a serious losing streak. Or if I havent played a moba in some time I will be a hindrance to me teammates. I wish there was a way to just play games.
This honestly brings up something from what you mentioned in an earlier video Max with Darkstalkers. You had mentioned the sales of the US, DS Resurrection did poorly to Capcom's standards. Well recently in the Skullgirls poll, LZ had mentioned a question: "Which game would you like to see LZ work on in the future, if possible?" DS was on the list. I honestly think if there was enough support, LZ could make a really well polished Darkstalkers title. It would help the US sales significantly.
Yo Max, something you might want to talk about; the modern era of home releases and dlc. In light of the recent Cross Assault glitch in UMvC3, it seems a good opportunity to talk about how games are released with bugs or in states that would never have been acceptable in the preDLC days, since they can just patch an incomplete or buggy game. Also, the shift from unlockable/secret characters to DLC leaving people who don't want to spend an additional $5 a head with an incomplete roster.
EVO last year where that kid was going ham with Spiderman...that shit was extreme hype. But the mother of all hype was the Justin Wong vs Daigo SF:3rd Strike comeback.
I would love to hear a real talk on this topic. I feel kinda depressed that Capcom pretty much just doesnt care and doesnt attempt to rebalance it. If capcom were to put an effort into rebalancing characters wouldnt it be possible to see other characters win at tourneys instead of Morridoom? It could be very well possible to finally see a shuma player take first place. Or something along those lines.
By unblanaced I'm referring to the stuff that is somewhat broken. Like Morrigan gaining meter in mirror image or Vergil. Just Vergil in general is broken imo
You see the fact that it is even fun for not just you but so many people to watch is just another thing that makes it the best. Sure there are people who will watch other people play games in other genres they are not interested in playing, but nowhere near the level that it is with fighting games. I'm curious though what genre would you place above fighting games?
I have seen some hype as hell comebacks in Starcraft, but they are less common. MOBAs are pretty hype, I've seen amazing moments, But fighting games are the most hyped. REALLY wish i had the patience to just sit down and hit the lab for a couple of hour
That's okay, if we all agreed on the same thing life would be boring. I guess from my own experiences, I've always had a sense of self-respect when I successfully counter a overpowered threat. But I respect your point of view.
If you didn't think in genres why object to someone saying something about genres? The whole conversation was about genres it shouldn't be hard to understand why a question about genres needs an answer about genres. Thank you for giving a straight answer. I respect the huge amount of work that goes into some RPG's and there are many very good RPG's.
Fighting games in my opinion are the most exciting 2 player games, the games that helped deal with my anger issues, taught me to analyze situations in real time, taught me dedication to learning something new, taught me creativity, taught me what it means to have respect for others, improved my hand and eye coordination, gave me reasons to walk long distances and get some excercise in the process, taught me how accept defeat in a dignified manner, My favorite game genre indeed.
Hey max, can you talk about the importance of good video game music in fighting games? Like how super street fighter 4's select theme is so well made and natrually pumps the excitement
I get hyped when I see a low tier team or character wins over a top tier team or character. Also, i get hyped when I lose to someone who knows what they are doing and doing awesome combos. Also, see you still rockin Wesker Max. And we need more SF 3rd Strike and SC5 videos. YO VIDEOGAMES!!!
3 types of games makes me hype, MOBA / FPS and Fighting games, eventhough I never and doesn't know how to play fighting games, I still get hype by watching EVO from youtube. I'm still waiting for 2013 EVO to upload to RUclips :)
RPG's are a great genre if you just aren't competitive they have some really well made games. I think though that is what makes people hold the fighting game genre in such high regard there is no other genre that offers such a complex level of competition among players.
Well one game I am certainly hype for has already been out for 10+ years now. With Super Smash Brothers Melee going to EVO this year, I can say that I want every marvel or street fighter player there to be hype watching the sets. Even though we may never get another Wombo Combo, the smash community always hypes itself up somehow, despite the fact that we've seen basically everything that can happen.
Hey Max I got a topic, fast pace fighting games vs slower pace. What aspects of each do you enjoy? Games like MVC are fast paced while games like Injustice are somewhat slower, so what is it that makes each one hype?
It doesn't lack depth, both design wise and mechanics wise. And even if that's truly your opinion, then you still have all the psychological depth when you pit two players against each other, which I believe other genres don't have even remotely as much as fighting games.
That's like saying WOW doesn't speak for a whole genre. As they are LOL and SC:HOTS are pretty much hegemonic for their respective genre, despite yes, there are other games. His point still stands, SC and LOL tournaments blow FG tourneys out of the water by sheer scale, production value, and views. As much as we love FG tourneys they need to step up their game is they want to reach the audience of SC and LOL (but they don't have dev support like those two so it's unlikely)
I do agree with your opinion that fighting games are the best genre, for a couple of reasons. 1. Fighting games sell. From crossovers to standalone, different fighting games with different tastes will attract everyone, it's like walking into a candy shop and seeing all the flavors they offer, you want to try them all. 2. Fighting games have a flare that can grab crowds of people, even if they aren't even gamers just because of how hectic and fun they can look. That's how I see fighting games.
If you're only just trying to get into SSF4 AE now coming from Tekken, you'll have quite the learning curve, and since online for SSF4 is a bit bullcrap, its probably better if you can play with people locally.
Next match I pick Reptile, one of the low tier guys, against his Mileena, decidedly top tier for her rush down moveset. I proceed to not only flawless him in the second round, but Friendship him at the end. He was infuriated, the crowd was amazed, and I was riding such a high that I've never felt since, it was simply awesome.
In fighting games, does one need to be a high-ranked person to even survive prelims in a tournament? 'Cause I am really dettered from trying to go to the Persona 4 Arena tournament at EVO... I may go to EVO, but tournament-wise.. yeah..
The only time I had hype like you describe was when SF2 came out ... it ws the only machine in a really run down town but man we would beg to go every day to play and I remember the exitement when we could pull of a special move ..... unfurtunately inMexico arcades never was a big thing so I only got that 1 experience ... so I think the internet has done a great service to countries that never had arcades like the USA
I agree that fighting games are the best genre of videogames...at least IMO..it gets me the most excited and it also makes me feel a lot more accomplished then playing a single player game...cuz single player games everyone can pass them...that is what they r for...but in fighting games you are testing your skills against another person
I'm not saying you're wrong, all I'm saying is everything you've said about fighters can also be said about Starcraft (for the record I play mostly fighters and suck at SC, but I love the meta and I believe it is the greatest competitive E.Sports ever made by miles), considering until recently Brood War (released in 1998) still attracted millions of players (compare SSFTII, released in 1994's [christ I'm old], competitive scene).
Nice video, Max. I'm just now trying to get into fighting games proper and this is definitely inspiration. I was wondering if SSFIV:AE was a good fighter to start with? I've played the rest of the series, but I've never been serious about it until now. Other than that, I'd probably just play TTT2.
I don't think developers will produce new fighting games for next gen for a while after the consoles hit shelves. Hope the current gen fighters can maintain the hype factor.
It all depends on who you get paired with. Unless you are facing some of the known pros my guess is you'll do relatively well in P4A. And even if you loose all your matches you'll at least get to play twice (if it's double elimination) and do some nice casuals. I say go for it, why not.
Max u should do a real talk on injustice and its spot in the gaming community. With it being a game made by NR thats supposed to appeal to the capcom fighter player. How it sits on the fighting game community. I think it would be an excellent topic I'd enjoy to hear u speak about.
It is very stiff. But the game is incredible. You get used to the movement after a few rounds. The weirdest part is the dash. It has such a long distance and I didn't like it at first but since there are so many zoners you'll need that insane range of the dash.
But the thing that fighting games got going for them is their fan base/community. The fighting game community has the biggest competitive scene than any other competitive genre. Now with that said a whole lot of people still don't know of its existence but have experienced or became a gamer from being exposed to the games that i mentioned before.
That is the nature of competitive play and fighting games are by nature competitive. I am not arguing that. I take fault with proclaiming it is the best video game genre. Some people are not into competitive play, like me, i like watching but i don't like to play on competitive level. To me the fighting game genre certainly has given me lots of fantastic moments, but to me it is NOT the best genre on the planet. I have had way to much fun playing other games to simply dismiss them so easily.
LZ is referring to LabZero games, the company that made the fighting game Skullgirls. It's an awesome game and a pretty cool company, but neither are very well known. You should check them out.
That's your personal opinion, I don't feel that way. Mainly cause there are too many forms of competition nowadays. Which is becoming lame at times. Even single player games try to be competitive now. That's no bueno.
I think something that has me not playing competitive games lately is that there seems to be less hype. Perhaps some others disagree, but I find most modern shooters pretty low on hype because of their serious nature and slower gameplay. I get excited over watching old Quake footage with its fast paced action, but I fall asleep to watching some dude camp in CoD. Similar comparison to MvC and Injustice, even more so considering there's something "campy" about this new keep away game.
As far as why I think FG's are best. Its the pure competition the intensity of the battles. The Metagame is a huge thing I think. With FG's we have a game inside the game. The fact that a 20+ year old game in the FG genre can still be relevant. The games have massive lasting power. More than anything else though it's the love the players many of these things are universal among genres. In reality there probably is no best genre. Best in this case is subjective, but in my heart FG's reign supreme.
Hey Max I like fighting games and I'm in no way at the competitive level with these game but I still have fun. I was wondering bout Injustice I've been on the fence bout getting it and was curious what you thought the longevity of the online would be for that game. I dont want to get it just to see the community move onto the next in a couple of months. What are your thoughts on the injustice community and the staying power of the game.
Hype is definitely 1 of the best aspects of video games, not just fighting games. This is usually why it's very easy to discover whether a game is bad or good. If the game brings alot of hype, it's obviously very good but if it doesn't, then it's either not your cup of tea or it just plain is bad.
I cant agree with the "best genre" statement, but hey to each his own =] HOWEVER, i do agree about being excited, about e-sports in general. We are a part of history, seeing this all before it really blows up [in the good way] [assuming it will]
The new patch fixed online netcode and nerrfed doomsday idk if you know that or not i made the strider costume on halloween im getting better at fighting games how do you get into evo?
To some fighting games are the best. to others they are not. That is fine by me, I just took issue how Max phrased it. Also, I gave you an answer to your question. It is very real. I don't think in genre's. I think in game settings, story telling and aesthetics. Because that does not fall into any predetermined genre does not mean my answer is not real. Or invalid.
Well as long as you aren't saying that there IS a best genre, then you are correct. I honestly don't know of a game that IS perfectly balanced and HAS perfect online pay. Everything competitive is usually done in person when it comes to tournaments.
If we're talking about Brawl, then the slipping mechanic makes it so it's not a fighting game in addition to the other things in the other Smash games. This includes moving stages, items, and other factors that might hurt the player or effect the game play so that it is out of the player's control and give the other player an unfair advantage. Although Injustice has interactables.... Don't get me wrong, I love smash and think of it as a fighting game. Although MLG does have a set of rules for it
And I replied I prefer any game with a heavily story driven plot. Why is it so difficult for you to understand that for some people the genre does not really matter as much as the content of the game? I also said I preferred RPG elements. So if you really must have a black or white answer, I guess I would pick RPG's. And politicians tend to avoid black or white responses because they usually come back to haunt them in the end. But yes, RPG's.
I am talking about genres dude not particular games. I am talking about all fighting games and all tourneys as well as RUclips streams etc worldwide vs all RTS or RPG's or FPS's and my point wasn't that there are more viewers but rather more viewers who don't play the games. I also can't really say that most popular even equates to best anyway. I am extremely biased because like max I grew up playing in arcades.
Suggestion for a future REAL TALK: balance updates in fighting games (possibly as compared to other balance updated games like Starcraft and League) Honestly I'd like to see this because I think that the way fighting games balance is strictly worse than Starcraft and League and that this problem hurts the community and the ability to get/keep fans. UMvC3 is a great example of this, as nobody really tends to care about the majors, since every one except 1 (AFAICT) was won by Chris G's Morridoom.
Well, can you name any game in any genre that's perfectly balanced with (even though this isn't important) perfect online play. Because I can't name one that doesn't have an imbalance of some kind. Fighting games come the closest to balance than any other genre because if they didn't, they wouldn't sell or they would quickly die down.
There's a lack of female gamers in every genre. Even in FPS where there are some more girls, video games as a form of entertainment is still male-dominant; mainly because of the natural competitive nature we have with games. Sure some females may play them for casually, but males we take it to the next level by increasing our skill at the game, making a competitive scene while organizing and participating in tournament. A major of female just do not want to put that much work into a video game.
As much as I like watching fighting games... to me now.. nothing can be an amazing team play... or single player play in League or Dota or similar now.
I didn't hear even the hint of an opinion in that statement. The fighting game genre is the best genre hands down. The only games that come close are beat' em ups, hack and slashers, and action rpgs.
Yo Max, this is why you're the man. I really hate playing people online because of that drama. I'm not super hardcore in competitive gaming simply because I stretch myself throughout many different genres, and games have a whole different meaning to me. that mvc 2 background music.....memory lane glad to walk

the old marvel music syncs super well with this vid about hype! the days when marvel got everybody insanely hype!
you have made me feel exited about games I don't even cared about XD you are probably the reason me and my girlfriend are playing DMC and Revengance
EVO last year where that kid was going ham with Spiderman...that shit was extreme hype.

Today's generation can still get that from local FGC meetups. You can still get a nice crowd around you it's just on a console instead of a cabinet.

I wouldn't say "The Best Genre" but I will say you right about the subject.
:D Max I love the fact that you have mvc2 music playing in the background.
Hey Max, I know you don't compete in competitive gaming right now, but how often do you go out to tournaments or how often do you stream monster??
Nice video, Max.
I'm just now trying to get into fighting games proper and this is definitely inspiration.
I was wondering if SSFIV:AE was a good fighter to start with? I've played the rest of the series, but I've never been serious about it until now. Other than that, I'd probably just play TTT2.
I honestly really like what you do Max. You're a role model to me, not just in games but in real life.
just posted a vid response showing some injustice hype for grand finals of our first local tourney for injustice. hope you enjoy.
I don't think developers will produce new fighting games for next gen for a while after the consoles hit shelves. Hope the current gen fighters can maintain the hype factor.
Hey Max, have you played the Marvel Heroes beta yet? This weekend is the final open beta weekend, ends Monday.
What makes a fighting game great, and what would be your ideal fighting game?
That is the nature of competitive play and fighting games are by nature competitive. I am not arguing that. I take fault with proclaiming it is the best video game genre. Some people are not into competitive play, like me, i like watching but i don't like to play on competitive level. To me the fighting game genre certainly has given me lots of fantastic moments, but to me it is NOT the best genre on the planet. I have had way to much fun playing other games to simply dismiss them so easily.
hey max could you talk about some foreign fighting games like under night in-birth, and how to help the community bring it to the western market.
Talk about arcade sticks for a video plz. Like availability, quality, pricing, etc.
LZ is referring to LabZero games, the company that made the fighting game Skullgirls. It's an awesome game and a pretty cool company, but neither are very well known. You should check them out.
I'd love to have that kind of friendship that most of the FGC guys have.
Actually I already downloaded the Skullgirls demo, I enjoyed a lot! Really good game indeed, hope to buy it soon.
I cant agree with the "best genre" statement, but hey to each his own =]
HOWEVER, i do agree about being excited, about e-sports in general.
We are a part of history, seeing this all before it really blows up [in the good way] [assuming it will]
The new patch fixed online netcode and nerrfed doomsday idk if you know that or not i made the strider costume on halloween im getting better at fighting games how do you get into evo?
oh my god that super chill mvc2 music =D
To some fighting games are the best. to others they are not. That is fine by me, I just took issue how Max phrased it.
Also, I gave you an answer to your question. It is very real. I don't think in genre's. I think in game settings, story telling and aesthetics. Because that does not fall into any predetermined genre does not mean my answer is not real. Or invalid.
I don't even play fighting games, but I love watching people that are good at them. They're fun to watch.
Well as long as you aren't saying that there IS a best genre, then you are correct. I honestly don't know of a game that IS perfectly balanced and HAS perfect online pay. Everything competitive is usually done in person when it comes to tournaments.
What happened to Garage Warrior? I wanna see some more Super Turbo!
What is that music from in the beginning. sounds soo familiar.
Speaking of hype, when is the next Hype Compilation coming out?
If we're talking about Brawl, then the slipping mechanic makes it so it's not a fighting game in addition to the other things in the other Smash games. This includes moving stages, items, and other factors that might hurt the player or effect the game play so that it is out of the player's control and give the other player an unfair advantage. Although Injustice has interactables.... Don't get me wrong, I love smash and think of it as a fighting game. Although MLG does have a set of rules for it
what theme song is playing ?
fair enough,i didnt take fighting games seriously when i was younger but i had fairly decent arcades around mostly marvel super heroes ST and mvc2
woah max as a 1st lord and using wesker!?!?! How old was that footage?
And I replied I prefer any game with a heavily story driven plot. Why is it so difficult for you to understand that for some people the genre does not really matter as much as the content of the game? I also said I preferred RPG elements. So if you really must have a black or white answer, I guess I would pick RPG's.
And politicians tend to avoid black or white responses because they usually come back to haunt them in the end. But yes, RPG's.
Good Real Talk...We need hype for Tekken Tag Tournaments 2!...It's still great fun!
Max how do you feel about competitive fps games
Suggestion for a future REAL TALK: balance updates in fighting games (possibly as compared to other balance updated games like Starcraft and League) Honestly I'd like to see this because I think that the way fighting games balance is strictly worse than Starcraft and League and that this problem hurts the community and the ability to get/keep fans. UMvC3 is a great example of this, as nobody really tends to care about the majors, since every one except 1 (AFAICT) was won by Chris G's Morridoom.
Can't wait for the KOF hype this coming evo!
What would you consider a superior genre and why?
what sports games where you into max?
Max, you use to play sports games? Which ones?
There's a lack of female gamers in every genre. Even in FPS where there are some more girls, video games as a form of entertainment is still male-dominant; mainly because of the natural competitive nature we have with games. Sure some females may play them for casually, but males we take it to the next level by increasing our skill at the game, making a competitive scene while organizing and participating in tournament. A major of female just do not want to put that much work into a video game.
COME ON, JUSTIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN!
Marvel 2 music gets me hype!
If only DmC's reception (and NT's behavior) hadn't soured CAPCOM on outsourcing production of their IP's.
Dat desk song
Because to me It's a competitive plat-former with fighting game elements.
