- Swing Expo 2015 @ Teatro Dal Verme
After the great success of the previous events, the city of Milan hosted another show dedicated to the swing music. Connecting with the spirit of the 2015 Expo that took place in the Italian city the same year, the event showed how traditional music from all over the world influenced jazz and swing music, as well as jazz and swing music influenced folk dances and songs, in a journey through different countries.
The Big Band was directed by clarinettist Paolo Tomelleri and the show hosted a great number of international musicians and dancers.
“Chinatown My Chinatown” was written by William Jerome and Jean Schwartz in 1906. Although the song is now considered a jazz standard, it did not catch on when they wrote it in 1906. It became a national hit only after 9 years, in 1915. After the success, the song was recorded by numerous and famous artists (25 jazz recordings between 1928 and 1942), such as Louis Armstrong and Louis Prima.
In Milan it was performed by an ensemble of great musician from different countries: Paolo Alderighi, Carlo Bagnoli, Bernard Flegar, Duke Heitger, Nicki Parrott, Rossano Sportiello, Paolo Tomelleri, Stephanie Trick and Engelbert Wrobel.

I knew “Chinatown, my Chinatown” through a video game but I never thought it would have led me to this magnificent piece. Wonderful.❤

Whenever I want a “lift” I listen to this remarkable performance. I can’t help but feel cheerful and optimistic.
Same
This song came up randomly. When the whole Band joined in, this reminded me so much of Louis Armstrong style of Dixieland. Only thing missing was his trumpet solo and his vocals! RIP Satchmo!
Looks like St. Louis native Stephanie Trick and her husband, Paolo, on the one piano.
Everyone is amazing but Sportiello is just incredible!!
oh excellent description! 😁
This is such a great rendition and one that brings a smile to my face. You can see all those taking part are enjoying themselves.
Awesome performance, any one whose spirit is not lifted by this, must lead a very mundane life!
This would have to be one of the best live performances of anything, ever - what an absolute joy!
The clarinet pull around 5:05 is insane - along with a well deserved cheer!

Gorgious. I really enjoyed this. And I had to laugh out loud when Paolo Alderighi produced that Erroll Garner moment at the end.

Le bonheur de jouer !…
Wow!
A wonderful performance! But you forgot to mention that it was Al Jolson who popularized Chinatown and was still singing it right up to the time of his death in 1950. It was featured in Jolson Sings Again and on Decca Records in versions he recorded with the band of my late pal, Matty Malneck.
Cudownie Panie i Panowie.

For my money the best pianist of the three is Mr. Tomelleri's band's pianist.
Otimo !!!
There's a great version by Russ Conway, tucked away on his 'More Party Pops' EP. Really enjoyed this.
What a treat, seeing and listening to this constellation of stars. Recognize Rossano Sportiello, Stephanie Trick, Paolo Alderighi, Nicki Parrott, Engelbert Wrobel, Duke Heitger and Bernard Flegar.
They all belong to our dearest musicians. Seeing all those smiles, of the performing artists as well as from the professional orchestra, tells you they are all in the grove. All (are) having a ball!
Thanks, Paolo Tomelleri and Lord Music, for offering the clip on RUclips for everyone to enjoy, the next best thing to actually being present. Also, thanks for nice filming and editing.
One question, Maewa and William, the great dancers, did they perform as well? This delightful couple can been seen halfway in this clip: ruclips.net/video/Ka_PClx_o5M/видео.html
Veri Naise.
There is also magician tbn RUDY MIGLIARDI!!!💪💪💪💪💪
This is wonderful. Does anyone know the name of the third pianist who plays with Stephanie Trick and Paolo Alderighi?
Hi! His name is Rossano Sportiello, he is amazing!
The third pianist is Rossano Sportiello. He is Italian but lives at Greenwich village NYC. Terrific ...
