Some people take money and deliberately try to belittle legends so that minions can get a place to stand.
He says he only wants to compare Apples with Apples and then in the next breath he compares Mini with Air2S. 😂
Air2S has a 1 inch sensor, it also has top sensors and I have seen it work. Take it under a tree and press RTH. The drones flies out of the tree and then starts to get to the designated altitude and then flies back. These sensors also act as front sensors when the drone is flying forward at an angle.
It has precision landing, hence landing light, flies faster, has cooling fan, can shoot Hyperlapse using way points nav, can create movies on its own by flying in patterns and compile a video in real time, can handle stronger headwinds better, shoot d-log, can lift a gopro or insta360 OneX2 with ease and a host of other features.
So don't compare a Mini with Air 2S.
There's nothing that the Mini3 has but Air2S doesn't, but it sure is the other way around.
And yes, Air2S does have Ocusync 03 and APAS 4.0.

This is the one I wanted, but don't now want the hassle I feel. Shame. Totally newto drones, want another toy, not another headache. Work gives me enough of those.

These test results are not representative of real world images. The DNGs indeed indicate that the Mini 3 pro outperforms the Air 2S - at leat up to ISO 800. At ISO1600 and above the mini 3 pro degrades very quickly, suggesting that the outperformance at lower ISOs may be due to software pre-processing. If you pull down the images from the DPR sample galleries for these two drones you will see that any time you need to aggressively pull up the shadows or control highlights the Air 2S outperforms by a large margin.

Thanks for the great review. While I see the advantages of the Mini 3 on your chart, picking out the fine details, the ultimate comparison is the in - air shots and while they look close I really preferred the Air 2S. You could see noticeable artifacts and "movement" of the image in the mini 3 4x comparisons and the Air 2S remains really smooth and detailed. all that said... I bought the mini 3 because of the price / size / performance which is near ideal because the quality is so very close to the Air 2S (I doubt I'd know which image is which if they weren't side by side) but I have to admit the Air 2S still have the clear quality advantage.

Wish you would have compered the 5.4K video of the Air 2S with the 4K Mini 3. I get that you want to compare apples to apples but you went ahead and compared the 48 megapixel to the 20 megapixel so you already kind of broke that comparison. My point is, would have liked to see the absolute best video quality both drones could produce.

    • @PilotInstitute
      @PilotInstitute  2 года назад +9

The 48MP vs 20MP was because DJI mentions that the Mini 3 was better at that level so we put that to the test. We can probably do a flight with Octozilla soon and compare 5.4k to 4k and see what happens.

Great test, thanks! But there is one important point:
Mini with aperture 1.7 at the same shutter speed will take a picture with a smaller iso. Where the air is 2s ISO 800, the mini 3 will have iso400.
So it is more realistic to compare personnel with different ISOs, if we cannot install the same aperture on these drones.

So the mini has more thrust, but according to other RUclipsrs, it has to work harder in strong winds and they are getting a lot of battery warnings popping up on screen. I also don't understand how the Air 2S can fly at a higher speed with less thrust. Something not explained here. They are both rated at level 5, but in the real world, how would both of these do in the same amount of high wind? In terms of flight capability in sports mode. Wouldn't being able to fly faster in harsh conditions suggest more stability?

    • @PilotInstitute
      @PilotInstitute  2 года назад +1

More thrust to weight ratio doesn't mean more thrust. Larger motors means faster speeds. It just means that if the A2S had better T/W ratio, it would fly even faster than it does now.
We have not had a chance to do a true wind test or compare it to other drones in that sense, we are trying to figure out how to do that more scientifically. The A2S is heavier to it will be more stable in wind.

I had the Mini 3 Pro - Air 2/S and recently got the Mavic 3 Classic. When the option to get the Mavic came up I knew I wanted to sell one of my drones in order to help subsidize the cost. I agonized over which one to sell because I loved them both but I ended up selling the Air 2/S. At the time I thought having this small Mini 3 Pro would be great for traveling and it is. Anything that really needed stability or a larger sensor the Mavic 3 would take care of. There are some downsides to the Mini 3 Pro. I live in Arizona and I have had about three instances in the summer (one yesterday in 106 degree heat) where the Mini 3 pro has had an excessive heat warning while flying. I was able to get the drone back each time but if I had been two or three miles out I don't know if that would have been the case. I think I would have had to pick a spot to land and then go try to retrieve the drone. The Air 2/S is built like a mini Mavic. It has internal cooling fans and sturdy like a tank. So not only will it not overheat I don't have any concerns with it being overtaken by the wind. I also don't think it could be taken away by a bird of prey. I don't have any proof about the bird thing but I've seen several posts about the mini drones being taken away. I don't think I would have changed my mind as far as the decision to sell the Air 2/S but There are some situations We're flying the Mini 3 pro is a little risky

If I’m watching the video on an older iPhone it matters a lot less the differences in recorded quality. Great video, thanks. I have an Air 2S that I use for photogrammetry and generating orthomosaics. The Mini 3 Pro would definitely be better because the edges of the image from the Air2S are blurry and have chromatic aberration. The 3 appears sharp across the whole frame and also has more pixels

    • @designer.346
      @designer.346 2 года назад +6

Hey man I do the same too, but I think the Air 2S is still better to generate the point cloud, since they're 20MP native photos and that means a better GSD (Ground Sample Distance). I think the Mini 3 adds more digital sharpening to the corners of the image, because you know sometimes when you have a large aperture a lot of detail goes away so they compensate that with software on the Mini 3. For example I got a f1.4 lens for my canon camera and when I shoot on that aperture the corners are awful so blurry, but when I shoot in f2 of above the detail is better.
And the 2S is a more robust drone, the Mini 3 can easily be drifted by a wind gust, which can compromise the overlap, and that new gimbal we still don't know how steady is for photogrammetry, that's what I think

  • @steve_seguin

And whoops.. Dammit all! But have the confidence. It will be repaired and/or replaced. And so everybody should purchase that optional extra, Drone Insurance. As it makes, financial sense. And if you have the money for the drone. You have the money for the insurance. Don't Scrimp. Don't Penny pinch. Get it. Take my advice as an old retired engineer of 50+ years. You won't regret it. You will not have buyers remorse.
Now what do I do with the $20,000 worth of my old 4, Canon, XL-1's? And dual digital, video switchers. What's the point anymore? I lost my shirt on that. But I got them all used for a great price. Along with, 2 of the optional, Wide Angle Zoom lenses. And they look scrumptious. Along with the standard 16:1, 16 X, stock zoom lens. And I got 2 of those. And the look was, fabulous. Shooting in anamorphic 16 x 9. With the skinny digital squeeze.. And then gives you a, Pana vision 1.25:1 aspect ratio. And effectively, 900 lines of resolution. With 3 separate RGB CCD's. And which can also shoot, 30 Interlaced or, 30 FPS Progressive. And still looks surprisingly good. Most can't tell it's not, 1080. It's 900. With 6 inch and 15 inch, external view screens. And LANC, zoom/focus controllers. For a very nice 4 camera, Studio Package. Great for rock shows at nightclubs. Great for church services. Plays, operas. And comes close to a real NBC-TV looking production. With some nice software, finishing.
So give that noise reduction trick a try. See if it doesn't work well for you.. Making that, Mini-3 Pro. That much better. To get rid of that noise in the chrominance/chroma.
In fact I ended up having to do that. In 2008. For a, rock 'n' roll documentary about a singer-songwriter. That I did not shoot.. Someone else did. And here I am looking at all this noise. Oh God. That looks like crap. What am I going to do? When I started trying all sorts of stuff. The noise reduction presets made everything look like a soft focus. Yuck! I wanted the resolution! And so then I got what I wanted. Resolution and no chroma noise. By simply imitating, VHS Color Under, encoding. And blowing the focus on the chrominance. All the way out! And it looks fabulous. For this, 1:28:30,, feature-length, theatrical, production edit. And I did much more than that.
With that Vegas software.. I was able to add, Digital Lighting. I was able to change, depth of field. I was able to multilayer composite. The entire picture. Of color, lighting, exposure corrections. Reframing, all of the shots. Changing from, 4 x 3 aspect to, 16 x 9. By completely reframing and zooming, the picture. Cropping it. Virtually,, for every shot! For every scene. For every intervie. Every musical selection. As it is a rock 'n' roll documentary. And it has a great background music soundtrack. I custom-made and mixed. And blew everybody's mind with what I did. As I was able to Remix. Stereo, recordings. Which in 2008. Was largely, wholly, impossible. But I did some really cool things to the music track. Like take the lead vocal. Which is in mono 12 o'clock high centered. And change that. So it is, Left & Right channel, inverted phase.. But only for the vocal. Which required some special audio, spectral processing.. With my technique. And what this does. It prevents the interview audio. From fighting with and/or getting obscured. By the song vocal audio. So that moves it to the extreme left and right. And the interview people are in the center. And actually plays well. When, up converted to, 5.1 Surround. It's really pretty amazing. And it really helps in which the way, I mix. Nobody knows how to do what I do. I'm a history making 4 time Major Music Awards, nominee. And 20 year veteran with NBC-TV. And quite simply put. I'm one of the best engineers in the world. And because I am so well informed, well educated. I can actually service the equipment. Troubleshoot and repair, the equipment. And it helps when you know it from the inside, out. And how it all works.

20 megapixel compared to 48 megapixel doesn’t always scream as better video and picture quality. Air 2s will take much better detailed pictures then Mini 3, but that’s okay. I do also totally get that the mini 3 just the sound pitch it makes is harder for the average person to pickup. Less possible confrontations more flying time doing your videos.
On your lift and decent clay only comparison is the Mini 2 to the Air 2s and the mini 2 takes off good, but maneuvers like a pig 🐷. It’s way slower in descending and slower in rising. Whether I have the Mini 2 in Cinematic Mode or Sport Mode the turn ratio is pretty much the same. Air 2s has some amazing maneuverability compared to Mini 2. I don’t know 🤷‍♀️ if Mini 3 maneuvers better then Mini 2? I know the camera 📷 is far superior.
Mini 2 in the “Bird 🦅 Danger ⛔️ Zone” is going to pretty much suck. The Air 2s will maneuver so much better. Would like to see ruse and fall comparisons between Mini 3 and Air 2s. I have gotten board of constant range tests. I couldn’t keep line of sight on either one a mile away much less 2.
Perhaps down the road when the Mini 4 comes out I will either go for that in the future or get a sweet deal on the Mini 3 and add it to my collection. 😉

You know… There is an obvious difference in the sharpness. I think I'm seeing a bigger difference than you are?
Now with the increased sharpness of the, Mini 3 Pro. It does look a little harder and a bit more, plastic. But I like the increased apparent sharpness. Over that of the 2S. That is not wowing me as much. I don't like it, as much. Though I might like the 2S, SloMo, better? I think it will do 240 FPS? Where the, Mini-3 Pro. I think will only do, 120 FPS? At 1080 P. And I do love that fluidic, SloMo. A lot. But of course no musical synchronization there. Because it's SloMo. It was shot fast. To play back at 30 FPS. And I just love the look.. Who doesn't?
I figure. If I want the, Mini-3 Pro. To look more like the 2S. Then I think. All one would need to do. Is to just put a fingerprint smudge. In front of the lens. Then I think it would look more like the 2S? By creating that artificial soft focus. With a smudge or some Vaseline. Like they used to do it. Back in the old days. Before they had actual, soft focus filters. That was the accepted procedure. Vaseline. On a UV or Skylight filter.
Why doesn't anyone else have something this spectacular?

In terms of photos, what was the scale of the picture? I couldn't really get a grip on it, if you zoom in to any picture you will 'see' grain/noise, but the other thing with photos is a qualitative element, which you simply cannot judge on a chart, you can get an inpression of ability, but you need to see the big picture. From a personal point I have the Air 2, which I am very happy with, but I think Id like to keep for larger scale, landscape work, but I am interested in acquiring the mini 3 pro as it is under the 249g cut-off and therefore opens up a whole area of access denied to the larger drone, if it can use the same controller I am almost sold!

Hey. This is a great video. Thank you so much. Yes I'm pretty set on this Mini 3 Pro. And you pretty much firmed that up for me. Thanks again.
Now as far as that additional noise. I have another way to deal with that. That I've been doing for years. From way back in, Analog Video, days. VHS and mini DV.
I discovered. Most of that noise you are looking at. Is in the chrominance. Not in the luminance, as much. And so when I want to get rid of the noise. While originally using,, Sony Vegas now Magix Vegas. They have a feature. Where you can blow out the focus. On the chrominance. And when I do that. All the noise virtually, vanishes.
Basically what I have done here is… Basically reproduce. The Color Under, processing. Of VHS videotape. The color is lower in resolution in, S-VHS. Where the resolution is higher in luminance. And the picture remains, clean. With far less noise. Which is mostly in the chrominance. In the color. In other words. And color does not need to be high in resolution. The luminance does. That's the black-and-white portion. Where you see all the lines and the fine detail. And you can get away with less resolution in the color. You won't see any less resolution. Because the resolution is in the black-and-white luminance section. With hardly any noise.
So give it a try for yourself. If your software accommodates that? I found Vegas to be the most effective and easiest to use. Even though I had the Avid Media Composer, software. That is far deeper and more complex. Great for Hollywood productions. Overkill for most average productions. And Vegas. A previously multitrack audio program. Which is my specialty. Later introduced, video. And works more like an audio program. And is very intuitive. For real photographers and videographers, cinematographers. Nowhere near as technical as Media Composer. And compatible with far more computers.
So I am now 67 and currently, struggling into, retirement. As I'm not used to being retired. I'm not used to having most of my friends,, my husband and my younger 64-year-old brother all dead now, either. In short I am emotionally shattered and devastated.
And so after my 99 1/2-year-old mother passes on. Which could be tomorrow or years from now. I will then get my own life back. To be alone. To be Nomadic in an RV. And getting some beautiful video of beautiful places throughout the USA. And then maybe also. Doing some commercial projects. Once I get that FAA Part 107 Drone License, permit. Which I do not anticipate will be, much of a problem, for me. As I was a student pilot back in my teenage years. Flying Piper Cherokee 140 and 180's. With my dad. And I got to take my own flying lessons with the instructor, also. Just not as many as dad. As I'm a much better pilot than dad was ever. And I had planned to enter the US military to become a jet fighter pilot. But without a Masters Degree. That's not going to happen. It didn't happen. I have no degree. I just know how to fly.
So this thing looks absolutely, Super! What a great review. You are a real pro. And you said it all. It was so clear and succinct. And what is that groovy accent you have? Is that a German accent? Or, did I get that wrong? Either way. You European types are so accurate and precise. You are, intelligent, creative and articulate. Some others are, also. Most can hardly talk. Most are dweebs.. Most are fat dumpy guys. Like the one in Idaho. Oy vey. What a fuddy-dud. Ugh! His fingers are too fat for the remote control! He has no talent. He has no eye. He has no professional, panache. He doesn't even know how to fly his drone, gracefully. He keeps stopping in midair. And then rotating. Jesus H Fucking Christ! It's not on an Invisible Tripod! You fly it! Rotate and tilt as you fly it. He doesn't know how to do that very well. He keeps stopping! What are you doing! Ugh!
And so it's great to get it from the mouth of a Pro, such as, yourself. I mean… I worked for NBC-TV News. In Washington, DC for,, 20 years. And I ran Studio Cameras and ENG shoulder cameras. Like this:
    ruclips.net/video/y8BPQxbAdFY/видео.html
this was fun to shoot. Johnny Artis was the bandleader. On vocals. And when I got there. He asked me to also set up the PA system and mix the band. I said I'm also running a handheld camera! He said do the best you can. Sure..
So I took a feed off of the PA mixer. The one channel of the camcorder. And on the other channel I had the shotgun microphone.. On the camcorder. The editor at NBC could then selectively mix the two together. He didn't take the direct PA mixer track as loud as I had wanted him to. Oh well. He relied a lot on the shotgun microphone. Which was not the better sounding mix. Oh well. That's the way it goes. And Skunk Baxter was cool. I enjoyed speaking with him. He's always been one of my heroes. The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan. Two of my favorite bands. Everyone else's also. And he was fun to talk to. I asked him about the Doobie Brothers. And he said he never smoked any of that stuff. I said oh really? And you're a conservative. And then you were in a band. Named after a, 120 volt, plug into the wall. Ladies,, aluminum, dill dough, vibrator. And I asked him how conservative that was? He laughed. Because that's what a Steely Dan, is! It's a ladies vibrator! To remove stress and frigidity. Yeah right! Yee ha! Woo hoo! Oh God oh God oh God oh God! It works. It doesn't fail. It never lets you down. It uses no batteries. It has extra Power! But it doesn't fly like a drone. I do. I might even sound like a drone?
I'm set on that unit. And by the time I'm ready to purchase that unit. They will come out with the Mini-4Pro. And then I will be, stymied, again. Looking at that one and going WOW! And then purchasing a, Refurbished Mini 3-Pro. At a substantial savings. I don't mind refurbished equipment. Especially when it is, virtually, new.. With the full warranty and extra, service and replacement insurance. And so you really can't go wrong that way. And if it's a piece of crap? It will unfortunately crash. Sent back to DJI and likely replaced. Or completely restored. And off I go again!

And so these drones. Are, everything I have ever wanted! From that, Fly on the Wall, camera. What a boon, to rock 'n' roll shows! I mean who cares if you hit somebody in the head with one? It's only rock 'n' roll. They'll just think it's part of the show. As long as you don't take their eye out. Try not to do that. They will be disappointed if you do. But it's only rock 'n' roll. And people expect to, get hurt. So, it's okay if you hit them in the head with your drone. And they shouldn't have gone to the rock show. If they didn't want to get hit in the head with a drone. And so it's all their fault. They got in the way. Hey stupid! You screwed up my shot! You can yell at them. And then they will know they did something wrong. And that's why they were hit in the head. So they won't complain. And you can give them a free copy of the video, later. With the drone hitting them in the head. Look that's me! But it hit you in the head? Yes! It was great! It just adds more excitement to the show. Everybody gets into it.
I also have, 2, Jib/Cranes.. With robotic motorized, Pan and Tilt, Heads. And you definitely get that Hollywood Look. That way. With 2 other, Flying Cameras. And so I have numerous, flying cameras.. For rock shows. Just like those Network Television Music Specials. Which I've done. For years. Decades. And the entire band rolls onto one of my, 24 Track Digital Hard Disc Audio Recorders. And mixed after the fact. And then laid into the video. But sometimes I will also take a live, 2 Track, Stereo Mix. And lock-in. And commit. With all of my processing and special digital effects. With over 100 patch cords. In my Patch Bays. That's a lot of patch cords! Because I have to have everything plugged in! And I have multiples of everything! Multiple limiters. Over 20 of them. Multiple downward expander noise gates. Multiple outboard Equalizers. Multiple Outboard Digital Reverbs. All in stereo! 24 inputs alone. Of just special-effects. And 24-32 live microphones! Sometimes more. Up to 48 on occasion. All going to separate tracks. Every single microphone. It can get very involved. And you've got to catch all of those solos by the musicians and vocalists. All live. All at the same time. All with terrible acoustic conditions. And I have to make it sound like a hit record! That's quite a challenge. To do that in 60 seconds.. Of their first song. And then I tell the radio station they can switch to me. And they come up in the middle of the first song. And live for the rest of the set. While still also going to the 24-32-48 track recorders. But if the stereo mix sounds good? I don't have to remix it. If I don't want to. And frequently I don't. I love my live mixes. So does everybody else. I'm really good at it. And I don't even know the bands! I don't know their music? Their repertoire? I don't know how they want to be presented? I just push up a mix and hope they like it. And they usually do. They love it! They've never heard themselves like this before! Dave told me often. That's right they haven't. Nobody else can do this. This way. This well. Because they never did it for a major American television network, ever.
And so flying these drones. Will be no big deal for me. It'll just be fun. I'll love it! I retired. Most the time I charge money. Sometimes I don't. Sometimes I just do this for friends. They'll give me a call. And say hey Remy. We are playing at such and such a club tonight. Would you like to come down? Sure! And I'll go record them. Later. I'll get, their, album projects. And when you have bands that do the Grateful Dead, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and all those others. They are just plain fun to record covers. Because we all know the songs! They are classics. And these bands were very good. They were all working DC, bands. That worked all the nightclubs. So did I. Some were great. Some were holes in the wall. But everybody comes out sounding, Great. Because I'm a Professional. And I know what I'm doing.
And so I kind of shot myself in the foot though. While in great with audio. Apparently. They love my video even better. And I started doing mostly video. Hardly any audio! Because everybody knew. I worked for NBC-TV. For the Network. And we were the best in the world. We had to be. We worked for the 1st, the Best, the Original, Radio & TV Network. I was originally hired by RCA to work for NBC Radio. For their, rock 'n' roll music entertainment division. But then I was transferred into Network Television News Operations. And I begged them not to do that. But they said you're a good engineer. You'll do just fine. Ugh! I became one of the best in the world at it. I was one of NBC-TV's, Top Senior Audio Engineers. You really can't get much higher than that. Though I can. When I smoke something with that. And I usually do. It always makes for a Better Mix. So I don't have to overthink, everything. I'd rather not think at all. I just do. I just, do it. Whatever it is. It doesn't matter.
I am really looking forward to acquiring that Drone. Thanks again!

The level of detail in this video is mind blowing! I've got an Air 2s with a Mini Pro 3 on order... Im pretty sure that i'll be selling my Air 2s

Bone question I think but Ive a MA2, I only really do fun stuff for fb etc but would like to upgrade so is the mini 3 an upgrade/substantial upgrade on the MA2, I could probably get maybe 60% of the mini 3 price for the air 2,
what you guys think, I really like the sub 250g and the "less regulation" that goes with it.(I'm in UK)
The more I watch the more I get confused haha.
Cheers Guys, great Vid Greg, Thank you.

The Mini 3 is definitely an upgrade over the MA2 so I don't think you would regret it, especially when it comes to regulation and video quality.

I am still a big fan of the Mini 2. May not do the video quality of Air 2s or Mini 3, but it’s very affordable and for the price it does take some nice 4k videos for just someone that is traveling 🧳 or out learning to fly a drone. It is I think the absolute best drone out there for a beginner. 😜

My issue is for the rc controller and nobody disguises it. The smart controller is android , but I use the basic it’s iOS. I find if I use my Apple phone it’s far easier down load the photos. Please make comparison to using iOS to android??

We recommend downloading the photos by taking the card out of the drone and putting it in a computer. There is no easy way to go from the smart controller to a phone to get the data there.

I will go for Mini 3 pro, it is much better in Cost Efficiently compare to Air 2s . most of all, it has very little fly restriction here.

Biggest concern with the mini 3 is the takeoff limits for altitude, the Air2s at 5000m and the mini 3 pro at just 4000 with a heavier battery. Based on your thrust tests, it seems like DJI might be playing that number conservative. Thoughts there?

I guess the question is, do you live or fly at 12,000 or 15,000 feet MSL? The highest elevation in AZ is 12,600 feet and we can't fly there so unless you live in Colorado and hike with your drone a lot, I doubt it will be an issue.

@@PilotInstitute exactly where I live and hike 😂 usually above 12-13k ft

@@TheVirtualSherpa In this case, the Air2S is probably better suited for you.

Air 2s videos superior to mini 3. Mini 3 photos superior to Air 2s

Would be interesting to know if the air 2s 2x zoom in 4k is cropping the 5k sensor (like m2p hq mode) or cropping from 4k.
