Thanks so much for this incredibly detailed review! I've spent the last 24 hours finding information on the image quality for photographs and I'm really happy I ended up on your channel and blog. You're the only one who has done very detailed testing for photographers. I am doing a lot of vertical panoramas for added resolution and to get that wide-angle vertical view. With this high resolution sensor and the flipping of the camera, I don't have to do those anymore. Looking forward to changing from an Air 2S!

Excellent Excellent review Greg. Packed with detailed specific information. Thanks, and I will be glad to use your link to buy when I decide the configuration I want. On the fence right now on which RC and which battery pack. Thanks again, great material as always
Great review Greg, thank you very much. The APAS warning you mentioned is worth its weight in gold. And what's not to love about smaller drones with better cameras???

I have not dared to test it cuz I don't want any undue damage to this very expensive drone. I did purchase the replacement thing from dji when I bought the drone, but it's only good for a year and it cost $79 us

Thanks. Another great video. I recently bought the fantastic Air 2S but I'm disappointed it didn't come with the RC similar to the Mini 3 Pro. Do you know if it is compatible with the Air 2S or if DJI will produce an RC similar to the Mini 3 Pro? The DJI RC Pro is way too expensive IMO. Thanks
Very detailed. Thanks for bringing this video to your audience! Great job! Quick question - What is the flip side to having the smart controller instead of the regular one? Would it miss any features? Is using a phone better in any way?
Personally, I prefer the smart controller. Only one device to charge, doesn't overheat like a smart phone does, doesn't dim when it overheats, you can easily record the screen, quicker to setup, lighter than a controller with a phone, no notifications or possibility of a phone call in the middle of a flight. The list goes on. Only possible downside, no internet directly to the device, but easy to connect to a wifi hotspot from your phone.
@@PilotInstitute are you required to connect to a hotspot in order to fly the mini 3 and record video and so forth? Also when you say you can record the screen. What do you mean? What do you miss out on if your not connected to a hotspot. Are you saying you can easily point your phone at the controller screen to record or that you can record video of what the drone sees?

Thanks in advance for any input you may have!
Well Done! I just ordered the DJI RC configuration, and a Golden Ticket. Anyone know what a Golden Ticket is good for? Thank you, and I look forward to the .stl for the landing supports.
@@davehelfrich3974 how does a person print these off? Never done this. Also the file doesn’t look like much. Do we take these somewhere to have them made? If so where can someone get them made? Lastly will these legs cause the drone to be over 249?
We like to design thing to test drones that can easily be repeated and controlled. We have been discussing how we can do that and should have a solution soon.
*Edit* The August release date is crazy! If people have not ordered by end of announcement day this could be a 5-6 month wait for the drone. This reminds me of the original Mavic release and we waited 3 months to be the first to fly a Mavic. STL? LOL as an owner of a 3D printer this is always the first question asked when something useful is posted. Great job on the review. It's a lot more drone than I expected and has me reconsidering the Air 2s purchase.
Since it now has a battery that keeps it under 249 grams, BUT you still have to add the propeller guards. That will indeed make this thing weight over 249 grams, yes?
I saw in another review that the built-in screen controller didn't have very good battery life. They stated that they only got 3 full battery flights before the remote needed charging. Have your findings been similar?
It hasn't been an issue for us since we have 3 batteries and tend to fly no more than that in one session. We charge our equipment the day before flying so it hasn't been a problem. With that said, the controller is a lot lighter than its predecessor so I'm guessing they put a much smaller battery in it.
Great review as always! I have a question, I'm having a hard time figuring this out via google searches. Is the Controller that comes with the mini 2 the RC-N1? I see different answers to this everywhere. On the back it says RC213, but according to Air 2s owners, their controllers also say RC213 on the back. I'm just trying to find out if the Mini 2 controller is compatible with Mini 3 and does it have OS-3?
I guess I'm not crazy recently noticing and complaining about the "softness" of the air2s photos. I've recently become a pixel peeper and almost paranoid about sharpness. 😂 One can never have it all!
Hey Greg What an impressive video! You have been really thorough. There is one issue on the lens I'm wondering about and hoping you can help. Some of the stills I have seen have quite bad distortion compared to the centre on one side or one corner. For example your 48 MB test shows the bottom right target quite mushy and some of those far right graphics are starting to go also. I don't suppose you could do a test with say the grass in the middle then each corner? I appreciate a lot of lenses aren't sharp in the corners but a lot are, take the Autel Lite+ for example which is even a larger sensor to cover but has the advantage of stopping down to f5.6 it's sweet spot. I this a limitation of a drone like the Mini 3 pro you aren't going to get the very best from the lens as it's quite a wide f/stop and fixed? Love to hear you thoughts on the edge sharpness from what you have seen. Tom's Tech also made the comment the corners weren't great. Many thanks and love your work! Cheers Andrew
Andrew, thank you for the kind words. I don't know if you saw the full size images but here's a link to the files for the Mini 3 for 48MP: www.dropbox.com/work/Drone%20Reviews/DJI%20Mini%203%20Pro/For%20website/Full%20Chart Yes, the corners are bit mushier but this seems to be a pretty common thing for the drones we tested. I think the f1.7 also has something to do with it. I hope this helps.
Greg, always great work on your part. If you were going to use a dji for interior real estate video, which would you use. I have mavic 2 pro, I think it's too big. Do they have propeller protectors for that one.?
No props guards available for this one yet but I wold definitely use this in the future when they come out. The Mini 2 works also if the place is well lit but this will be even better.
I am wondering about the controllers. Will the RC Pro work with this drone, or the RC controller work with the Mavic 3? I am looking to add the ability to fly and photograph when I visit Canada.
Great review video! but I think there are some typos in your banners. For example, at 16:18 the banner says "RC Pro does not have HDMI Out" and I think you mean to say "DJI RC controller doesn't have HDMI out". The same issue occurs before this banner about the 5D button.
I want to watch the whole video, but I have to catch a flight. Can you tell me if the original Air 2 controller will work with this Mini 3 Pro so I could just buy the drone and a couple of batteries and be flying?
700. It's about as good as a smart phone but it won't overheat and dim like a smart phone. It hasn't been an issue in our testing so far, even on bright days.
I hope they create a fly more combo without the RC N-1 since so many of us have one or two already. Questions, as I have forgotten. I registered my Mavic Pro when I got it, and I believe that one registration is all that is needed until it expires, but my question is whether we have to go and list every drone we have when we get them? Also, will the RC Pro work with the Mini 3 ? I want one, but have the Mavic 3, so it is hard to justify getting one as photography is my main interest, however, if I can fly it with my RC Pro, I will probably get one.
Is your Mavic Pro registered for recreational (44809) or commercial (P107)? As of now, no the RC pro will not work with the Mini 3 Pro. That may be something that changes via software, but we're not sure.
@@PilotInstitute I am recreational, I know part 107 has to register each drone from one of your courses, but don't remember if recreations was covered or what the answer is.
@@PilotInstitute oh ok maybe they can do it on a firmware update. Is there a way to transfer photos to your phone while using the rc controller with the screen? That’s what I ordered
@@PilotInstitute I have heard of 3D printing but I am not sure what it is. Does the printer actually make the piece? If so where can I go get them made? Thanks again and I am really enjoying your videos. Doing your course now on the mini 3 pro. It’s our first drone so this is exciting. Got the Trust certificate too. So on our way to recreational flying thanks to your help.
@@PilotInstitute You got my hopes up when you compared the two controllers to each other But wouldn’t have the same abilities. unless they make it Compatible with the Mavic three RC controller I’m not be interested in purchasing yet another Controller with a screen that only operates one drone, I have a Mavic three pro controller I’ll never go back Or purchase another controller without a screen built in
@@PilotInstitute Thank you for the answer. I understand you do not know why but it makes NO sense to have a brand new drone that won't even work with their proprietary goggles. Heck they could make double the money by selling more gear. Frustrating to have to fly FPV drones that only fly for 5 minutes before changing batteries.
It connects to the internet and that's how you get your approvals. If you're out in the field, you can simply use your phone as a hotstop to get internet.
@@PilotInstitute Can you comment on how the new controller for the Mini 3 does in direct sunlight? I’m really struggling with my iPhone/iPad in direct sun and would get this controller in a heartbeat if it performs well.
I disagree about image quality. Based on the pictures you provided, the Air 2S look way better. You only talk about the crispness, but completely overlooked the graininess of the image. The Mini is far more noisy than the AIR 2S based on what you showed.
@@PilotInstitute At 27:31 you can see there is a lot more noise in the Yellow and Green section Mini 3. Again at 29:30 the Mini 3 looks more noisy if you look at the color and stop focusing just on the contrast of the edges. And this makes sense because the Air 2S has a bigger sensor true 20 megapixels not 12 with the fake 24 megapixel quad sensor that the Mini 3 has. Plus the Air has 10 bit color, I think the Mini 3 is only 8 bit.
@@2Bluzin 10-bit is only for videos. Both of these cameras record photos at 16-bit, as shown in the RAW file EXIF data. I'm not sure the point you're trying to make. There is definitely a tradeoff between noise and sharpness. You pick whatever you prefer. We are not telling you which one is best. It's like saying red is better than blue, it's a matter of taste. Personally, at low ISO, I think the slight increase in noise for the Mavic 3 is totally worth the extra sharpness, but that's a personal opinion. The Air2S is still a great drone!
So a 12km range best case, yet I’ve not seen anyone test it even 1km yet? VOS sure, but why can’t someone setup a test in the right scenario to help us understand connectivity at a distance? I ordered one, and it looks great from all I’ve seen, but lack of any kind of reference to range has me concerned now…
@@PilotInstitute It's actually the current capacity of the AC to DC convertor that makes the charger base "quicker". It could theoretically reduce the life of your batteries so if time is not a problem it's probably better to use the convertor that ships with the charger for now. I am sure that one of our engineering gurus on MavicPilots will give us a full analysis soon. for those that do need quicker charging and don't have the Mavic 3 convertor, several earphones, tablets and larger phones have higher output "plug-ins". Fabulous review Greg.
@@johnmaxwell611 hello John. Could I please ask if you could help me understand what your taking about. I am new at this stuff and although I understand the talk about the slow charging of batteries. I cannot find the same Mavic 3 charger that looks just like the charger that will come with the Mini 3 Pro. Either way that’s ok since it sounds like your saying we can use some other charger to charge the batteries safer. Not sure if your talking about an adapter that many of us may already have for example phone or camera charger adapters. If this is what your saying could I please ask which item you recommend that will help charge the batteries better and not damage them. Thank you in advance.
Great video as always from you guys! I feel that companies need to stop slapping the word 'Pro' onto products that clearly aren't. This is a great drone, I'm sure, but is it a dedicated professional drone? No, the primary market is influencers and beginners who want a fun drone to fly and travel with to capture their memories. While its size may have some advantages in certain professional environments, thats not the dedicated purpose of this drone. I'm not a fan of this false marketing where companies just slap that 'Pro' label on things and call it a day. Anyways, those are just my gripes, it's just a name I guess, but it still bothers me.
If you use that DJI RC do you have to have a Hot Spot in case you need to get un unlock or "swear that you are qualified" to fly at that location? If it's just an RC with no connection how do you get the drone flying in some "restricted flight zones"? How do you get maps to update and things like that with no connection? I am assuming you still need your phone for that stuff.
Your testing of air time is flawed! Turn off every sensor including GPS to get what they advertise. The way they test this is by attaching a light tether, fishing wire to keep it in place so it doesn't drift off. The real test should always be done while recording 4k video at the same time at standard 24fps and gps on to give real life times. your 26 mins are way too high as well because you were not recording!
No flawed at all. You also contradict yourself by asking us to do something that no one does in real life (tether the drone) while asking us to be more "real life" by recording. Which one is it? Our testing is standardized so it doesn't matter if we record or not, we care about having a comparative value from drone to drone, specifically percentage of advertised flight time, in the same conditions.
@@PilotInstitute No, I meant real life times as in fly the drone while recording in 4k for real world fly times. No one ever just hovers still for no reason.
@@PilotInstitute regarding dual iso...dual iso is only for video mode. In photo mode, like all all digital cameras that have this feature, which are video cameras, do this. You never want to jump to a different iso with different noise when taking photos, especially timelapse on auto. No dual iso camera has this. What you are seeing is common when increasing the iso in a controlled lighting environment. Once you hit 1600 the way the sensor on auto color balance will do this. If you had it set you manual you will still see this to some degree but not like you do in your video when you went up to 1600.
@@brocour except for the part where all our photos are done with a custom white balance of 5600k to prevent auto white balance from doing exactly what you describe. All our photos are also captured in manual mode using an external display with false colors to verify exposure is uniform across the entire shot and consistent over time.
The Mini 3 has better thrust to weight ratio than the Air2 and better than most of the drone we have tested except the Matrice 300 and the Autel Lite+.
@@PilotInstitute what drone would you recommend as someone’s first drone to use. We wanted to get something better than the mini 3 but we are insecure at the requirements when having one. As a recreational flyer who has the Trust certificate. We assume that if we went with a drone over the 250grams, that we would need to simply register the drone and make sure the drone is marked with the required info visibly on the drone. Just don’t remember what else we need to do to comply.

I'm just trying to find out if the Mini 2 controller is compatible with Mini 3 and does it have OS-3?
Yes the Mini 2 comes with RC-N1, so does the Air 2 and Air 2S and Mavic 3.
I guess I'm not crazy recently noticing and complaining about the "softness" of the air2s photos. I've recently become a pixel peeper and almost paranoid about sharpness. 😂 One can never have it all!
Do we know if we can use this RC controller on the Mavic 3? (or more than one drone at all?)
Not at the moment.
I don't know if you saw the full size images but here's a link to the files for the Mini 3 for 48MP: www.dropbox.com/work/Drone%20Reviews/DJI%20Mini%203%20Pro/For%20website/Full%20Chart
Yes, the corners are bit mushier but this seems to be a pretty common thing for the drones we tested.
@@PilotInstitute you are amazing look at that response!
I am wondering about the controllers. Will the RC Pro work with this drone, or the RC controller work with the Mavic 3? I am looking to add the ability to fly and photograph when I visit Canada.
We don't know yet if it will be compatible with any other drones, or if the RC Pro will be compatible with this.
I'm wondering, do you think I can use my P4P controller with my 7" CrystalSky monitor with this little baby?
Nope, definitely won't be compatible with any older controllers like the P4P.
Great review video! but I think there are some typos in your banners. For example, at 16:18 the banner says "RC Pro does not have HDMI Out" and I think you mean to say "DJI RC controller doesn't have HDMI out". The same issue occurs before this banner about the 5D button.
It’s possible. It’s been a whirlwind to get this monster of a review out and we may have missed a few spots during the final review.
Notifications gang checking in
I want the fast charger so how do I get the fast charger when ordering how do you know which is slow and which is fast
I want to watch the whole video, but I have to catch a flight. Can you tell me if the original Air 2 controller will work with this Mini 3 Pro so I could just buy the drone and a couple of batteries and be flying?
Yep, if you have an RCN1 you can buy just the drone.
@@PilotInstitute Do you need a Hot SPot for that DJI Controller to update your maps and get unlocks from DJI?
What is nits on that controller Greg? Probably won’t buy but.
Wonder if the old smart controller will work with the mini 3, like it does with S2, even though it has ocusync 3 ?
Which old controller? If it's a RC-N1 it should work,
One question: The standard rc have two back whells like smart controller? Or only one? Could zoom while control the gimbal?
2 wheels. Gimbal and Zoom.
DJI is advertising the smaller battery at 34 minutes flight time,so that knocks down the percentage of flight time you are getting to 79 percent.
The doc they sent us said 31 minutes. Interesting.
Pro's & Con's - Thank You as Usual - 6 weeks into Mini 2 ownership - never part ways with it - mini 3 might do - IF someone does Landing Gear
Thanks for the detailed brief. Question: Has the first Remote ID drone come to market yet? Does anyone offer a Lume Cube-style Remote ID?
Not yet and not yet. I’m sure we will see more activity on that front in August and September.
Does the mini 3 have quick transfer? That comes in handy on my Mavic 3
No, not something we have seen advertised for this drone.
@@PilotInstitute oh ok maybe they can do it on a firmware update. Is there a way to transfer photos to your phone while using the rc controller with the screen? That’s what I ordered
As this has O3, any thoughts if the RC Pro will fly it?
We don't know yet until DJI announces it. It would only make sense but who knows.
Do you prefer this drone over the Air 2S?
Close call. We will do a more in depth review of it vs the Air 2S very soon.
Can the zoom wheel be programmed to be an EV wheel in the settings?
Does the drone come with at least 1 battery?
Yes.
Have you published the STL for the landing gear yet?
Right here: www.dropbox.com/s/mzzc4hiyl1ujqzz/Mini%203%20Front%20Arm%20Extensions.stl?dl=0
@@PilotInstitute how do we make these legs for the landing. I have no idea how to make them? Can we buy them from you or from somewhere. Thanks
@@cda3715 You will need a 3D printer. We do not have them for sale right now.
@@cda3715 Yes, 3D printers melt plastic to build different models.
APAS works with 4K 30 I think?!
Not sure why you added music while someone is talking. Very annoying!
Can you fly the mini three using the RC pro controller from the Mavic three?
Not at the moment and we don't know if it will be supported in the future yet.
@@PilotInstitute You got my hopes up when you compared the two controllers to each other But wouldn’t have the same abilities. unless they make it Compatible with the Mavic three RC controller I’m not be interested in purchasing yet another Controller with a screen that only operates one drone, I have a Mavic three pro controller I’ll never go back Or purchase another controller without a screen built in
@@Inpreesme My guess is that over time this will become a standard option for all drones, just like the RCN1 is.
HEADPHONE WARNING! The intro will cause pain as it's so loud compared to the rest of the video.
Yeah we messed up a bit on that!
Will this drone sync/work with the DJI FPV Goggles?
No.
Can you put on a offline Google map?
Can you use the smart controller with mini 2 or an Air 2
sorry just seen the other Question about it
Will that rc controller work with other dji drones
We're not sure yet. Hope so!
So with the controller not being a cell phone how does ot get approval to fly and get approvals
It connects to the internet and that's how you get your approvals. If you're out in the field, you can simply use your phone as a hotstop to get internet.
You are wrong. The arms can not be unfolded in any direction. But they can be unfolded and folded in any order.
Is this Mini 3 Pro compatible with the RC Pro controller?
We don't know yet.
At what ISO?
Can I buy a drone that I can fly over people and don't require documentation
So a 12km range best case, yet I’ve not seen anyone test it even 1km yet? VOS sure, but why can’t someone setup a test in the right scenario to help us understand connectivity at a distance? I ordered one, and it looks great from all I’ve seen, but lack of any kind of reference to range has me concerned now…
It works really well within VLOS which is really what 100% of US pilots need to know.
@@PilotInstitute glad to hear connectivity is strong within VLOS. Thanks 🙏
Dies this new drone have geo-fencing?
Yes, all DJI drones have it.
Can you buy the RC by itself?
As of now, no.
Did you perform the acuity test with the camera set to 48MP? Thanks for the awesome review!
Yes. And we will have a quantitative comparison video on Thursday of the 12MP vs 48MP.
Can this new controller be used with my Mini 2?
No word just yet on if it will be compatible with the Mini 2.
WE don't know yet.
Can you use the Rv pro controller
Not yet.
Bro please tell me what music is that.
Nice video Greg. What's the trick to speeding up charging? Missed that.
We used the Mavic 3 Charger!
Use a larger charger like the Mavic 3 charger.
@@johnmaxwell611 Correct. Charging at higher rates will likely reduce battery life over time.
It has more thrust but the same speed as the mini 2
Totally agree with you!
No built-in remote ID?
Not that we found. There was no option of it in the app nor in the manual we got!
RIP head phone users
uh?
@@PilotInstitute 0:01
The mini 3is OK the motors are smaller than the air two and Mavic 3 so not as much stabilization
Let's see it against Nano+.... :)))))))))))))))))))))
We will post that video on Friday!
