Ben Grynol asks Levels Co-Founder and “Good Energy” author Casey Means, MD, whether these foods are eat or pass and what to do when it comes to your choices for improving and protecting metabolic health.
00:26 - Pumpkin seeds roasted in a processed seed oil: Eat or pass?
Unroasted is always better. Seed oils, especially when cooked at high temperatures, can cause inflammation and oxidative stress. However, if you’re stuck with a choice between something like cookies or chips vs. roasted pumpkin seeds, the seeds are the healthier choice because you will get a dose of magnesium and other minerals, whereas with the cookies or chips, you’ll be getting empty calories.
2:34 - Farmed salmon and other fish: Eat or pass?
Farmed salmon is an upgrade from an ultra-processed microwave dinner. However, wild salmon is the better choice. Farmed salmon will still have useful nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and omega-3s. But it could also have environmental toxins and higher amounts of omega-6s, which can be inflammatory.
5:33- Dirty Dozen vs. Clean Fifteen: Eat or pass?
The Environmental Working Group includes a list of the “Dirty Dozen” (foods that are typically contaminated with environmental toxins if not organic) and a list of the “Clean Fifteen” (which typically don’t have a toxic load). Our ultimate goal is to get as many nutrients as we can to help with our cellular health while minimizing the toxic burden. To make things more complex, we also want to minimize glucose spikes, and some plant foods can spike blood sugar, like corn, which is on the “clean” list. If you’re choosing something from the Dirty Dozen, then opt for organic if possible.

I listen to Dr Means every chance I can. In this case, the "music" is so annoying I had to listen at 2X the speed and get through it as fast as possible. That said, the advice was very good.

@@levels Hi, I like to cook asian foods. Is peanut oil okay? And is sesame oil okay for finishing dishes? Thanks!
Loved the video! Sorry, the music was a tad too loud and a bit distracting.
Couldn’t listen all the way due to annoying music….wanted to tho

why the annoying music overlay? it distracts from otherwise good discussion
Agree, in general, the music they use is annoying as hell.
confidence.
The graphics are also overdone.
The video also drones on and on. Poorly done.
Totally annoying! Was going to post the same thing.
Saying this in kindnes....please stop adding music to the interview. I get this is your production...but the music is so very distracting from the wonderful knowledge that is being delivered.

"Toxic Burden" - "We want to give our bodies the best nutrients and substrates for our cells to utilize while minimizing the toxic burden."
Love that take. That's a very direct way of putting it.
Good info with annoying music.

Carnivore here for a year at age 70. Diabetic. Sugars very stable now.
I disagree with the take on salmon. There are a lot of fisheries in Ireland and scotland that are producing very high quality farmed salmon. Going forward we are going to have to rely on farmed seafood as over fishing continues to be an issue. Also, not all “wild” Alaskan salmon is actually truly wild. Most of what is being caught spent the first part of its life in a fishery and then was released into the ocean to help supplement the fish stock. With wild fish as well we have to grapple with the fact that our oceans are hardly clean
Agree. farmed salmon can be fine depending on WHERE it was farmed, and how high their 'farming standards' are. The "Yes" or "No" concept can be easily misguided because many of those are NOT simply black and white. That being said, I have SO MUCH RESPECT for Dr. Casey. LOVE HER and her wonderful journey is SOOOOO appreciated by me!
Farmed sits in its own waste, can be crammed next to a diseased fish, farmed can be treated with pharm A Sueticals, artificial colors etc... salmon color farmed is white.
wasn't there microplastics found in wild caught salmon? at this point eating salmon is not a good idea anymore.
I’d be fine with the music if it was much quieter because it’s way more difficult to focus on what’s what’s being discussed .

Gosh - I have never read so many critical comments on two people who are trying to help others . 😢
Definitely ditch the soundtrack
If there's no healthy choices at a gas station instead of going for pumpkin seeds roasted in seed oil, you could just fast or plan ahead and have a healthy snack or meal with you.
I’ve seen some gas stations carry apples and bananas
I still have a twinke within it's plastic wrapper from childhood. Still looks fresh.
Good to know yet how disgusting to think that we ate these in our youth.
Trust me, after 62 years of making bad choices and a visit to the E.R. with a BP of 190/190, I CHANGED to Whole Food Plant Based. I am down 90lbs, my BP is 112/80 routinely. After a year I am adding pastured/Barley Sprout Eggs. Yes, 7-minute Boiled Eggs with a shot of Tabasco. I start my day with whole beets (3) handfuls of Arugula, Micro Sprouts, Cilantro, 1 Serrano pepper, one cucumber, protein, Garden Earth Chocolate protein powder (Never WHEY protein) Chocolate collagen, Cylon Cinnamon, Dulse, ginger, MUD water powder, distilled water, half/Brick of organic tofu, then BLEND! Everyday!
I’d like to share a different perspective based on my own experience and research. I was raised vegetarian and believed that LDL was harmful and that red meat would lead to health issues. But after getting very sick, I started digging into the science and discovered that much of what we’ve been told isn’t supported by strong evidence.
For example, mechanistic studies show that meat and fat don’t actually cause diseases like diabetes or heart disease. Instead, poor blood sugar control and insulin spikes-often driven by diets high in processed carbohydrates-are major contributors to these conditions. The **Atherogenic Lipoprotein Profile (ALP) Study** and the **Whitehall II Study** both highlight that insulin resistance, rather than LDL cholesterol, plays a significant role in artery plaque buildup and heart disease risk.
One thing I’ve learned is the importance of including animal-based foods in the diet. Animal proteins are more bioavailable, meaning our bodies can absorb and utilize the nutrients more efficiently compared to plant-based proteins. Additionally, plant-based diets often contain anti-nutrients, like phytic acid, which can inhibit the absorption of important minerals like iron, zinc, and calcium.
I also noticed you mentioned using plant-based protein powders. While they can be a convenient source of protein, it's important to be cautious, as some plant-based protein powders can contain harmful levels of heavy metals like arsenic, cadmium, and lead due to the way they are processed. Over time, consuming these contaminants can potentially lead to health issues.
I understand that everyone’s body responds differently to various diets, and it’s fantastic that you’ve found what works for you. But it’s also worth considering that for many people, incorporating nutrient-dense foods like eggs and even responsibly sourced meats can be part of a healthy diet, especially when the focus is on whole, unprocessed foods and maintaining stable blood sugar levels.
Amazing - that’s one hell of a transformation 🙌
Most commercially available corn in the U.S,, however - as much pesticide as it may have on the surface, is GMO Franken-food and manufactures glyphosate within it's own cells, unless it's organic.
Most sweet corn produced in the US is NOT gmo. It has one of the least pesticide residue. Now....field corn (hfcs comes from this) is a completely different story.
@@Katgirl2024 I'd like to wish that's true - and hope to see them advertise their product, then, as "non-GMO" - maybe even "Organic."
@@soap5393 organic means expensive certification. Just know, sweet corn is on the clean 15 list. Minimal pesticide residue.
@@Katgirl2024 Thanks, Ktgilr2024. It's just that in my book genetic modification (GMO) qualifies equally with added pesticides for the dirty list. In fact, some GMO is about causing the cells of the host to create the pesticide internally.
@@soap5393 yes. I see that now. Very misleading. Thanks!!
Soaked Chia and Flex seeds are great source of Omega 3 oils.
The problem with these are the omega 3 FA content is ALA rather than DHA and EPA. ALA is harder for your body to use in a mg per mg basis. Per Richard Lustig M.D. MSL.
Agree. No music!!!! But great show!!

Organic doesn’t mean absolutely no pesticides because while the farmers may not spray their plants, the transporters may spray to keep the produce fresh to get to market. Yes?
What a fun video! Just shared with my community!
I think a video of yours let me down the path of eating according to my glucose monitor thank you

Yes, no music!!! Or just turn it down. Actually, get rid of the music but keep the yes/no sound effects….but turn those down.

WILD caught is best when it comes to Seafood. Huge Greens, legumes, balsamic vinegar, raw walnuts, etc. truly it's an educated choice, once you know what these processed foods will do to you, you will make great choices.
the problem with this advice is everyone reacts differently to food, so how can one say eat this not that, get a cgm.
Can we eat unrefined seed oils? No one ever mentions this. I think the reason that corn has few pesticides is because it was genetically modified so that it would resist pests, but that's another discussion. Thanks.
What about black seed oil? Many say it's good but it's a seed oil. Is a good quality organic black seed oil good or bad?
So you do know that there are lots of pesticides that are approved for use on organic food right?? Maybe just wash your food well.
Why Dr Means repeatedly suggest organic produce as a healthful choice
Organic farming is not regulated, labelling is erratic b/c there are no strict parameters and no one is monitoring. Also organic farmers do use remedies to control infects, etc, and and doesn’t mean that those remedies are harmless
Agree about music, quite irritating and totally unnecessary

I've heard that, also, about organic farming. Disappointing.
Pumpkin seeds #1...😊
There is a 2020 review of farmed vs wild salmon that sheds some interesting info on that particular subject. Farmed fish had Higher omega 6 content (which other studies suggest is not bad and may be beneficial) but higher EPA content. Lower DHA but also lower dioxins, methylmercury and other toxins. The fishery standards differ from country to country and so the feed will differ, the fat content will differ but the toxins are almost always lower. There is nuance to this topic. I am clearly not covering all of it in a tiny comment but neither is this video.
Good info but the music is awfully loud and competes with the speakers. I’m out due to the music.

Eat or pass... fish in general? Do you have concerns about pollution, heavy metal, microplastics etc
9 months, and no reply?
The benefits outweigh the negatives.
I used to really love fish, I live in a region for it. now it is as Elmo says "a sometimes food".
I love leafy greens, but I've been scared by several reports about oxalates- Legitimate concern, or false?
Apparently if you eat cheese with it, that helps cancel out the bad effects of the oxalates. Double-check that though because I'm not 100% sure.
GET RID OF BACKGROUND MUSIC IN YOUR VIDEOS. IT'S DISTRACTING AF

conventional lemon taste is bitter. While organic lemons, I have found in every case, have a sweetness to them.
Much more desirable to me.
Also a good indicator of being sprayed.
They are called Meyer lemons they are bigger and sweeter.
Organic beans are not 99 cents a can lol. Most beans aren't that cheap
Bidenomics. Vote Trump so we don’t have Harrisnomics.
Dr. Means you are right on a lot of things but you are still missing on very important points. It is better to cook beans from dry than eating them from a can because those are loaded with sodium and if the can was exposed to a high temperature or contains acidic foods then, aluminum would release into the contents. Aluminum has been linked to Alzheimer’s, dementia and other brain diseases.
Also, organic foods have some bad ingredients as well. Reading labels is a must in the US. For example; I would never recommend processed organic meats just because of being organic. Eating organic is a cleaner and healthier choice but not every single ingredient in the organic food is clean or healthy.
I wouldn’t recommend conventional limes or lemons because those might have apeel which is very harmful.
Do your own research people. I have been doing it for over 12 years and find that everything around us is full of bad chemicals like make up, cleaning supplies, clothing, towels, food, and more.
Grow your own spinach and kale.
I was wondering what the definition of ‘organic food’ is.
Eat or pass... Organic non GMO tofu and tempeh?
no one is eating tv dinners, that is not the problem..
the noise makes this unwatchable and time stealing, better channels out there

Why shouldn't I just eat yard waste? It would be equally delicious as what is recommended here.
Is there a list so I don’t have to listen?
Like, like, like i can't watch because like, like, like, you can't seen to talk without like, like, you know what I'm saying?
