Backpack rappers where the realist because they wasn’t pretending to be something they weren’t
And they do what's expect to be done: work with their craft, rhyme and make music, not getting lost in some fake persona trying to prove something.
@@olgierdolo5510 (ehem) Pac (ehem)
@@TheEsquireOfSportsFSU He's the one that I had in mind writing this, for real.
A lot of backpack rappers pretend too, let’s not get it twisted. They are pretty much all playing characters to some level.
They still needed to have attitude, because that's essential to hip hop. They had to be clever and not corny. Engaging and not preachy. Dope lyrics and dope beats. A rapper like Nas bridged the gap.
That’s “nope Nore” was like Jesus speaking! Lmfao

The change happened when the oligarchy took over radio and former music video channels like MTV and BET. I didn't include VH1, because they played soft rock until they switched to reality TV and old '90s sitcom syndication.

There's nothing wrong with backpack music, the problem is they don't play it on main stream radio and platforms because it gives people food for growth. And they want to keep the people dumb, deaf and insane.
Say it again for the people in the back just to be Clear!!!
@@jedimaster3098 that line is so corny "for the people in the back" smh
this.. you would think emcees are all gone but there are some Supreme lyricist around still.. they just don't get played
The problem here is wanting to see this authoritarian "they" (whoever this boogieman even is) as an evil entity, and the listener as an innocent victim that doesn't know any better
The truth is, people are simply more interested in the ignorance. People don't like being preached to or being challenged. The ignorance is easy to digest.
This also comes from issues with authority. People LOVE to blame everything on the higher ups ("they") and see themselves as victims
Maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle. But if you really feel this way, you gotta hold the adult listeners accountable too.
@@ShardTown bruh get out. Social engineering exists, has existed, and has been admitted to by government agencies (and media conglomerates) for decades. The Backpack Hip Hop era was my favorite. I wish I could go back.
It didn't "separate" shit.. Thought was talking like an adult and accountability. I salute them for that song plus that song was fuckin 🔥
It was 🔥and true as well.
Jay Z separated it actually. As a backpacker, Jay Z was our devil, because all he talked about was "money, cash, hoz." We accepted Biggie, though, so Mos Def is correct.
@@KtotheG in that way of thinking Diddy and Mase separated it all and was HUGE when jay-z had like 1 album out
@@seankiesling2054 Yup, them too... the backpacker scene began bubbling, probably around '91-92 when you had the Def Squad/Hit Squad rappers taking over the East Coast hip hop scene in the underground... and the Native Tongues Family with their conscious lyrics and alternative approach... then it got a shot in the arm on the West Coast with Heiroglyphics in '93 when Souls of Mischief released their seminal debut, '93 Til infinity. That crew also reinvigorated battle culture... as a huge hip hop head, I was always battling in high school, in homeroom, in the cafeteria, on the school bus, at house parties, etc.. but when Heiro came out, it expanded and more people got involved. In '94, Nas dropped the New Testament in the backpacker Bible, Illmatic... I would also include DITC (Diggin' In The Crates), BCC (Boot Camp Clique), Gang Starr, The Roots, Freestyle Fellowship, Hobo Junction, Aceyalone and The Good Life Cafe artists, Common, etc. The tension with the overly commercial artists didn't really come to a head until around the late '90s when mainstream rap got really glossy and jiggy... that's where you had Puffy, Mase, Jigga, Cam, etc... then you had indie labels like Definitive Jux and Rawkus poppin up as an alternative, which produced the likes of Company Flow, Talib Kweli, and Mos Def. Company Flow's Funcrusher Plus album was another milestone in the backpacker subgenre. It hit the underground hard in '97 and recalled the raw, gritty sounds of Enter the Wu Tang and Enta Da Stage from '93. By the '00s, the South and commercial rap had taken over and the backpacker aesthetic and sound became completely relegated to the underground and indie labels.
@K G Well said. I was alive and as an avid fan of Hip-Hop this is exactly how I would describe the timeline of events. Mid late 90s into early 2000s is when the bubbly commercial shit took over.
The Roots What They Do video concept was 🔥🔥🔥🔥
