legit. I went to school in Arkansas in the 90/early 2000's and never learned about the little rock nine at all. black history month only really covered emaciation, Harriet Tubman, a brief touch on the 50s and 60s in general and the white folks who helped. I learned more from these videos than I ever learned in school.
@@phuk8865 right, but the ridiculousness is that to simply walk inside the physical building required a thousand armed military... that is something to be marveled at. I got to meet one of the Little Rock 9, Minnijean Brown. She told me she was so scared, and the torture didn't end when she was finally allowed into Central. Ms. Brown was expelled due to yelling at the girls who hit her with combination locks.
A lot of people forget that just because they eventually were allowed in the school, the racism didn't stop. Look up the Memphis 13, they experienced this stuff too but were elementary kids at the time!
Thank you for leaving this comment--I learned something new today. Though we hear of all these "black history wins," we sometimes forget how pervasive racism is. Life is not a fairy tale where things are perfect after reaching a milestone. Sure, these kids went to school, but the racism did not end once they reached their classrooms. The fight against racism is lifelong (and will continue for generations).
This wasn’t that long ago. Remember that all of these people are someone’s grandparents and great grandparents. The students, the cops, the protestors, the politicians. So the next time someone says racism is over or that we all need to love on, point them to someone in your family or their family. They likely have someone who participated in this, and refused to face their crimes.
My mother just went to her 50th high school reunion from Central High and the white classmates still act like they didn't torture them. She said there was no truth and reconciliation. One white classmate did actually try to ask if it was bad for them. It's very interesting to look around and think that people who look normal behaved like this en masse.
Exactly. My grandmother was born in 1946. And she is still alive and well. She experienced this and the people that did it to her are still alive and well.
There are still people alive today walking free today that participated in lynchings. If my parents had been of African heritage in America they would have been subject to segregation laws while they were growing up. A lot of people seem to think that the Civil Rights movement happened 100 years ago, kind of like how people assume Vietnam veterans are 90+ years old ( they are not). The truth is, its so recent that in some families its not even separated by a full generation yet people are surprised when something like Charlottesville happens.
Fun fact: there were originally 10 of them. There was a girl named Jane Hill, but after they got blocked from attending school that first day, she never came back.
After being screamed, cursed at, and threatened (just like the others), she quit. I don't blame her for it. I don't know she she moved out of the city but her parents decided not let her to follow through with the intervention effort with such a danger present.
In the spirit of this do not forget Grace Lorch's contribution! She protected Elizabeth while going to the bus stop and was viciously ostracized and attacked by her community afterward. Her family had to flee the country because they got blacklisted! A true activist and hero as she kept battling for equal rights and desegregation
Her family had to leave the country for getting a taste of what black people were treated like? I do appreciate those who give up their privilege to stand for what's right, we should all be so brave.

What I never get about this vitriol is that it’s the exact same, rep telling ppl how stupid they are and liberals doing the same. Don’t they get they’re the same close minded ppl?
As a native from Arkansas, this is the first time I've ever heard this full story. I don't understand why I didn't learn more about this in high school. Little Rock is literally the capitol of Arkansas. Come on, guys.
Ask your parents and grandparents about it. My mother graduated from Central high 51 years ago and the white students still didn't acknowledge torturing them at their 50th reunion last year. People have to be more honest and clean out the old wounds.
The bullying that they had to endure wasn’t just random teenage bullying. I saw a lecture where Elizabeth Eckford talks about how local parents would have neighborhood meetings and tell their kids what to do to harass the nine so that they would drop out.
God, that is absolutly vile! It's easy to chalk it up as just people being kinda mean, but no, this was a systemic, intentional effort to kick black people out of their communities and make sure they never come back.

When I saw the Little Rock Nine step on the school grounds, a chill went through me. I faced that same reception when I was bussed to an all white school in Louisville KY in the late 70's. On our first day of school, we were confronted by mob of white adults bearing signs that essentially said we don't want you here, go back to your neighborhood. I can still hear the sound of glass bottles shattering against the sides of the bus. Racial slurs. The other kids with me were crouched on their seats or on the floor of the bus, screaming. I only had two years to attend until I graduated, Thank God. I had some positive experiences over time. Life went on. I forgive those racist pigs but I will never forget. I don't know how old you are but you're lucky never to have experienced it. Google the period of time when we were court ordered to go to all white schools and whites were forced to do the same. Busing was done in Boston, Ma, and cities in Maryland just to name a few. I admire the strength and courage of the Little Rock Nine. And I'm glad that things have and are changing. I stand for non-hate, peaceful non-violent protest, inclusion, diversity and justice. Let's keep talking and understanding one other.
She was being sarcastic. If you've watched Amber on Late Night with Seth Myers, you'd see enough of her skits to know she doesn't believe that for one second.
Being a freshman at central high school and seeing this video is pretty amazing. the history and sacrifices that were made to get to where we are today, aren’t payed tribute the way it should be. But seeing this, I can tell you this is the right way to do it, get someone drunk and have them inconsistently explain what happened. Love this

She's supposed to be writing a sitcom about a married couple. I don't know if she's acting in it. It's supposed to be based on her real life marriage to a European man.
I think she's great where she is right now, that being on Seth Meyer's show. They already showcase her a lot, but maybe they can give her even more time and segments, that'd be cool :) the other people like the leave them alone guy or that other weird little writer whose name I forgot aren't nearly as funny as her.
@kagsgirl she is a writer on Seth Myers show, he clearly is really massive fans of the team and the writers. She does 2 segments "Amber says what" which is ok, but "Jokes Seth Cant tell" is better.

But ur comment is kinda irrelevant since the person was referring to the video and what happened with Little Rock 9
Of course he did that on purpose, ya know for comedy. He is old enough to have used one in his younger years. I'm 33 and have used mg Grandparent's rotary phone when I was 7ish or younger. And yes I used it to call my Dad at work while I was on summer break. He had push button long ass cord phone from the 80's still. Basically my Dad an his parents took care of their phones so I got to use them 😂 But for sure if this guy is older than I am he got to use one for sure.
I remember reading a book about the Little Rock Nine by Melba (sorry I forgot her last name) on my school library. I forgot what it was titled but I'll try to find it when school does return! I remember seeing a picture of Elizabeth Eckerford walking through the angry white mob with her iconic stone-cold face and that gave me so much courage and it helped me learn that I should just walk through these people who discriminate me for being who I am and I respect her bravery so much.
Understanding that she is laughing to control her own feelings of fear and anger and despair but siding with the host cause you're white and know you will never really understand the persucution that comes with being black so it's not you're right to to criticize or judge her expression and there is no way for you to join in on this experience that is not yours so you just smile politely and allow her to do her thing

"We don't know exactly why we hate you, we just know that it's something our parents have handed down to us, so we're just acting in what we think are their best interest." That's a really nuanced, pointed distillation on how racism in kids is learned.
I was lucky enough to hear Carlotta Walls LaNier speak about her book when I was in high school. It was really amazing and you can still sense the amazing strength of her person. 😊
I dk... blm isn't what you think it is. The way to take back what is ours, is not protesting. But turning back to God full of prayers and repenting of our sins. We must not forget what they have done nor forgive and make friends with the serpent seed (them). We absolutely must not mix with them and invite them in our homes. Read Deuteronomy 28 it explains why we're in this position and why we are hated, though we have done nothing. Stay away from blm the founders are witches they say themselves they practice it and talk to the dead. This movement is Deception leading away from The Most High.
I feel African American community should get some compulsory reservation in employment and education system.. they faced so much and yet the stood bravely and struggled.. and still continue to face closet racism.. RESPECT FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY ✊
The Indian Princess I believe Affirmative Action was supposed to help. I know there are job postings specifying minorities and women encouraged to apply. I also think some colleges practice affirmative action in regards to SAT scores. But I’ve actually have heard black people complain desegregation and the great society, welfare, have hurt their communities more than helped. The rates of single motherhood has gone from 20% to 70% and AA communities pre civil rights were the fastest growing middle class communities. And John Oliver just had an interesting piece on how schools are still so segregated....surprisingly it wasn’t in the south, but New York.
@@anneb889 Affirmative Action was not created for black people or people of color . It was created and has mostly benefited White females way more black people. Majority of people do not realize this fact but there is a ton of evidence /research on the topic now. Generally when people refer to minorities we automatically assume people of color.
Angelic TroubleMaker Affirmative action was signed in 1961 by Kennedy.... before the women’s movement was really under way. The original primary purpose was for minorities....it included race, religion. The original order didn’t even included basis of sex....that wasn’t added til 1967 by Johnson. However, over the years yes, white women have been the primary beneficiaries.
Im not sure about the single mothers statistics among black women ,however, I do know many reports now confirm that black women are now the most educated group in the United States. Single mothers or not they are doing whatever to ensure their homes are taken care of. Let's not forget there are waaaay more white people on welfare than black people. As a college professor I love research, however, statistics can be very bias, manipulative,no one ever reads the fine print nor the entire study, only report the positive for certain groups of people, and use them as a tool of propaganda, etc. As a black woman there many things reported about black people, yet when I look at my own life, I do not know anyone personally who has lived on welfare, been to jail, murdered, have baby daddies and mommies, live in the "hood", we can all swim, we dont care if our hair gets wet, my nephew is a policemen, my parents, their siblings, and my grandparents were all college educated, etc. This is not my life but majority of black people I know lives reflect the same as mine. The media only focuses on the negative dont believe the hype.

I went to school in Arkansas in the 90/early 2000's and never learned about the little rock nine at all. black history month only really covered emaciation, Harriet Tubman, a brief touch on the 50s and 60s in general and the white folks who helped. I learned more from these videos than I ever learned in school.

Doesn't mean for sure they kept up with that. Also doesn't mean the kids themselves decided on their own beliefs.

I got to meet one of the Little Rock 9, Minnijean Brown. She told me she was so scared, and the torture didn't end when she was finally allowed into Central. Ms. Brown was expelled due to yelling at the girls who hit her with combination locks.
The fuck?! That's some bullshit, and thanks for sharing.
Damn that is so terrible!!! She really is a hero for all she endured.
starzzzy Two of those Memphis 13 are twin sisters, they are my sister-in-laws and they endured much trauma.
I met one of the 9. He wasn't that old. It's crazy

Fun fact: there were originally 10 of them. There was a girl named Jane Hill, but after they got blocked from attending school that first day, she never came back.
@Carlaeyyy, what happened to Jane?
What happened to her?
After being screamed, cursed at, and threatened (just like the others), she quit. I don't blame her for it. I don't know she she moved out of the city but her parents decided not let her to follow through with the intervention effort with such a danger present.
Nothing 'fun' about that, but admittedly interesting.

My God, imagine being those kids( big emphasis on the word KIDS) or even their parents. Their bravery and character is infinite considering the circumstances.
