Masterfully sung, and musically, I always loved everything about this song... Dan had that rare versatility with his gravely voice to belt out screaming rockers like Hair of the Dog, Miss Misery & others --- then with his same distinct voice pull off ballads like Love Hurts, or Where are You Now..
miss misery, simple solution. what a growl. and his voice stayed pretty strong for decades. sunshine, love leads to madness, broken down angel, so many good songs, hard as nails, and soft as satin. its a shame they weren't bigger
Right on, Sir Ken! His voice, on this particular jam, ALWAYS cuts me deep, down to & right through, my very soul! Great to hear it in isolation, as well! And yes, I sure do hear the Bon Scott/Brian Johnson/Axel Rose vibes in there! It's a rawness & realness that's got such a beautiful edge, & I love it! Thanks for another awesome video, my friend! Rock on & peace out!🌹💜🌍
One would be hard-pressed to find anything critical to say about this vocal performance. McCafferty is spot on with every note, high as they are, and his signature distortion added in just the right amount. So emotional, I believe this song could make a person cry even if they didn't understand a single word of it. The message rings through in the power and intensity of the vocals. Great song, great choice for an Isolated Vocals video. I was wondering when you'd get around to this one, Ken!
Great choice, Ken! There's just something about Scottish vocalists... a certain tonal quality that I love. The entire "Hair of the Dog" album is a masterpiece with ferocious performances by McCafferty throughout!
@PittsburghRocks. Have you heard any other Scottish singers like Frankie Miller, Gerry Rafferty, Pat Kane (Hue And Cry) for example? And you have probably heard that the original Nazareth guitarist Manuel "Manny" Charlton passed away recently. Stay safe and well.
I've been waiting for this one until the cows come home. Un-bloody-believable. Uploading video about Dan is a dream come true. Love Hurts always brought me to tears. This song is riddled with strong feelings and peppered with emotions. Innefable that's all I hafta say. Dan has it all. He deserves his legendary status and more. My heart belongs to him. Working presently on this one. But it seems that I can't sing "Love Hurts" to save my life. Tough luck.😆🤣😢 Ken, your vids ten times out of ten sweet and magnificent. If you're not fond of his vids then you should reassess your tastes. Is there anything that he does that isn't badass. Never disappoint not in the slightest. Thrilled to bits and have the jones for more!🥰🥰😍😍💕💞🤘🎸👏👏🔥
Going thru a BAD break up in 75 when this first hit the air, really intensified the HARSH reality of what I figured HE HAD to be feeling in the studio. I thought MAN!!! ,this guy's singin with that pit in the stomach, gut wrenching emotion I feel right now!.Bought the 45 and tried singin it, which I COULD make pitch way up in G back then, but could NOT get the natural vocal distortion, which I thought was achieved just by SCRRREAMING..LOL..Hearin it isolated was a REAL TREAT!!! Thanks!
The song is a masterpiece, this is the song that gives mood and stirs feelings no matter how old the listener is - 15 or 45. Some songs are diamonds, some songs are stones - if to re-phrase Chris Norman`s text.
I love Nazareth and I love Dan McCafferty. I am so thankful I got the chance to see them several times live here in Salzburg in the 90s and early 2000s. But still, he is one of those guys in rock music that make me wish I was 20 years older so that I could have seen them perform in the 70s and 80s as well. 😄
Sad news today, Manny Charlton, former bandmate of Dan in Nazareth, has passed away today at the age of 80. I just read the news and I saw that you are posting this today. Seems like a fitting tribute to Manny. R.I.P. Manny Charlton.
I guess on "paper sun" he goes even higher... anyway Nazareth did so many wonderful ballads and It Is sad people only know Love hurts and hair of the dog album... Dream on, dying breed, move me, love leeds to madness, sunshine, Heart grown cold etc. all awesome ballads... Loud N proud, razamanaz, rampant, expect no mercy, malice in wonderland, bogaloo, the newz and the live album at the beeb...all awesome records.
November Rain was composed with Manny Charlton and Axl, who covered live fallen Angel, asked Dan to sing to his wedding. AC/DC asked Dan to join the band after Bon S. death.
Yeah!!! I loved this🤘...Dan McCafferty was one the Best singers and the comparison that you did with Bon Scott was amazing, I love the both voices. Thanks 👊👌🤘
Back in the 70s, I remember a Toronto (?) DJ saying something like “McCafferty swallows razors for breakfast.” But his voice is more melodic than he’s given credit for. Still, the Bon Scott/ Brian Johnson reference makes sense. That said, I went to a music festival circa 1979 at Toronto’s CNE grounds just to see Nazareth and The Ramones. Also on, Goddo, Johnny (Edgar?) Winter, Ted Nugent, Aerosmith
The AC/DC comparison was pretty obvious but I never thought about Axl Rose, you’re right there’s a lot of that in there, it also reminds me a little of Janis Joplin and some ways. I think there was just that period in time when this was all new when people pushing their voice completely to the edge like that getting that sort of gritty resonance. I love it.
I sing songs like this this with my acoustic. Troubadour style. I thought, "Yeah this is a cool one. I'll do this." Since I had Hair of the Dog on 8-track when I was a kid and I love the song. Yeah right! These vocals are so unbelievably high with the perfect distortion and intonation. This has to be one of the greatest vocal tracks of all time. I definitely hear Bon, Brian and Axel. It's in the same range with a similar timbre. Good Lord. It's perfect.
One of my favorite vocals of all time.. You are correct, Ken about Brian Johnson who was playing the same circuit at that time with Geordie , You are spot on about Axl Rose who said Dan McCafferty was a big influence on him and actually wanted Nazareth guitarist Manny Charlton (R.I.P.) ,who produced this track, to produce GnR's debut Appetite For Destruction,,,Manny ended producing the demos for the album but not the final product..
At the time Nazareth spent time in a studio on Isle of white.Dan and Darrell went to a wedding while Pete and Manny worked with the songs. Love Hurts was recorded in a key way off Dan’s comfort sone. I remember Pete Agnew telling me this. « We just stood there listening to him. Completly nailing it»
Never listens to NaZareth Ken wow awesome vocals he has spot on pitch and vocals live his tones and voice what a voice Ken I'm loving it he is great man
I'm gonna listen to the track! Great vocals! I love their version of "This Flight Tonight" from Joni Mitchell. Where Roger Fisher from Heart stole the Barracuda riff...
HEY KEN!! Crazy idea from a longtime fan [he mentions, pointedly]. What about analyzing George Jones' voice? I know it isn't the kind of music you usually analyze, but Jones had a distinctive and enormously influential tone to his voice that might open up interesting avenues of analysis for you. Just as one point to bring up, he had an exceptionally "elastic" voice. By that I mean he could go from very low to very high without a change in tone or vocal technique which is rare. Just an idea... That happens to be from a fan... Who will be paying close attention... 😁😁😁
Ooooo ya. GJ would be great, or how about a George Jones Tammy Wynette duet. Old country has a lot of very smooth voices. Charlie Pride :Kiss an Angel Good morning", Charley Rich "Behind Closed Doors", Kenny Rogers had a very raspy sexy voice, either "The Gambler" or "Lady" excellent. A fun one would be Jeanie C Riley "Harper Valley PTA,". Ken you are my age, you should know these. Anyway, keep up the awesome videos, they are awesome!!!
Hi Ken - I really enjoy this series. One thing I was hoping for (and you did it with Living On a Prayer) is going over the different techniques in the song. You did help by comparing him to Bon Scott and Joe Cocker. Is that really it though?
I think you could analyze the voice of Kerry Minnear, the mastermind and occasional singer for Gentle Giant. For example, the song "Aspirations" where actually there's no special need for an isolated vocal track as the vocals are very clearly heard even along the musical lines. Kerry's sounding is very opposite to Dan's - Kerry was on the mellowest extreme. But man was he a genius! PhD in composition from London Music Academy (so, he had written a piano concerto), he played keyboards, cello and lots of other instruments, sang by notes and was a phenomenal composer.
I always thought "Hair of the Dog" sort of started this AC/DCish type of singing. I remember being about 14 years old hearing this on the radio. Then "Highway to Hell" hit the radio airwaves. A lesser known Nazereth hit is "Holiday". A very cool rocker from 1981?
He's an Axl Rose influence actually. GNR made a nazareth cover too (hair of the dog). And u can hear the same exact technique at the beginning of the song Madagascar from the album chinese democracy.
Axl was so fond of Nazareth that he wanted "the producer of "Hair Of The Dog" album" to be the producer of the next G'nR album... It never worked out, but the producer turned out to be Nazaret's Manny Charlton. Sadly gone on the 5th of July, this year. R.I.P., Manny. Thank You for the music.
Very cool. I would have loved a quick clip of Roy Orbison or the Everly Brothers just for comparison. Great video. I was also thinking about Steve Marriot here.
Dan’s voice was so unique. I love this band. Unfortunately we lost another legendary singer. R.I.P. Dan and God Bless your soul.
RIP, Dan. Thanks for being part of my teenage memories.
Nobody sing love hurts as good rare unique voice...only My favorite Dan McCafferty
I remember this song from the mid 70/s. What a voice, bringing back many memories. RIP Dan McCafferty, November 8. 2022.
Mr MCafferty was pure genious for rock back then. So underrated. The most important reaction ever. Thanks, man.
RIP Dan McCafferty
Always have loved this song! He's an incredible vocalist!
RIP, sir Dan McCaffertty.🖤
"They're not fooling me" is too high for a man without autotune.

Incredible voice !!
He was so awesome.
Perhaps the greatest rock vocalist of all time, crazy underrated!
His voice was so soulful and sang with a lot of conviction hardly anyone does that anymore we need more singers like him and of course you out there
The passion is what makes it great. He isn't a traditionally good singer but his soul drips from his voice.
So very very true 🦚
Such a unique voice and so great

I second everything @Sarah Hurst said! Totally agree!
One of the best songs ever. And the vocals is world class

Totally agreed. 🦚
One of my favorite bands from the Seventies. Kick ass band!! Underrated for sure.
My all time favorite song by Nazareth, love this.
Always loved this song...takes me back to H.S. oh, the anguish in his voice.
Great choice, Ken! There's just something about Scottish vocalists... a certain tonal quality that I love. The entire "Hair of the Dog" album is a masterpiece with ferocious performances by McCafferty throughout!
Right on and Robin Macaulay is from those parts of the world too
yes it is,, and in concert his voice is still clear and powerful.. that first album is one of my all time favorites .. perfect..
@@markmiwurdz202 and now dan himself on Nov 8
A song and a voice that will take you through life in 3,5 minutes....
The emotion he brings is so genuine it seems. Maybe something else that’s missing a lot these days.
Nazareth deserved so much more credit.
I don’t care if it’s distorted or not. When the real intense feeling is there… that’s all that matter to me
You are so greats Ken,this is what i have been waiting for.Thank you very much sir,god bless you.
I absolutely love this song. The lyrics and the vocals are superb.
I've been waiting for this one until the cows come home. Un-bloody-believable. Uploading video about Dan is a dream come true. Love Hurts always brought me to tears. I like his distorted sound specially on the high pitch and how it blends to chest voice. He is definitely underrated
Underrated by who?
Dan forever.🙏
This was really cool Ken. This song is timeless!
I have a feeling Ken's vocal coaching will be breading a tonne of new vocal/music talent for generations to come 🙏🙌
The song is a masterpiece, this is the song that gives mood and stirs feelings no matter how old the listener is - 15 or 45. Some songs are diamonds, some songs are stones - if to re-phrase Chris Norman`s text.

I love this song so much I kinda wanted to play it at my wedding but seemed inappropriate 😉 thanks for breaking it down. The entire album is amazing!
Please do more Nazareth, so many world class songs .
RIP Dan
I listen to few of his songs, really love his voice
I always loved his voice. Especially this song. Agree on his voice being very unconvincing about love hunting. Love your channel 😎
I totally hear Bon and Brian in there. RIP Dan McCafferty
I love Nazareth and I love Dan McCafferty. I am so thankful I got the chance to see them several times live here in Salzburg in the 90s and early 2000s. Hey Ken! Awesome band. Incredible song. DM's vocals are up there with some of the best. Nazareth never got the credit they deserved. 😎
Love this song such an amazing unique and beautiful voice so much emotion love this Ken❤️
Yes! What a voice...
A mais Linda voz nunca ouvi outra igual e fantástico Dan maccffert e mais Linda música de todos os tempos
Got chills all along even without music. Definitely a blast from the past. RIP Dan 🦚
Love the way you break this stuff down. Another great video
Super Dan McCafferty
Great voice. Still sounds good today. We once performed this with a track and it still went over...lol! People love that song.

My all time favorite vocalist and band. Dan is a big inspiration for me, along with Lue Gramm and Robert Plant
Wow i love Nazareth version Love Hurt it full of emotion and soulful
Ken your rock knowledge is amazing!! Love your channel and your work.
Love it and can definitely hear the influence he had on Axl Rose.
Great 70’s Scottish band! High voice range on Love Hurt’s. Different range on their “Holiday” song off the Loud and Proud album.
Holiday song is on their album "Malice in wonderland". 🦚
R.I.P. .........
great analysis! Axl Rose actually cited Nazareth as an influence, and Guns N' Roses covered Hair of the Dog on the Spaghetti Incident? Cover Album.
November Rain was composed with Manny Charlton and Axl, who covered live fallen Angel, asked Dan to sing to his wedding.
AC/DC asked Dan to join the band after Bon S. death.
Perfeito ❤❤❤

Dan deve estar emocionado com seu comentário. Puisse-t-il reposé en paix. 🤍
Saw them in '78 outdoors. Sounded like the greatest stereo system ever constructed.
Reminds me of 80's.. this song has the real feelings of hurt. Very well done, fusion of feelings into it, rather than funky..

He was awesome. The band deserves more credit. His voice was unique
Loved that album. Bought it when I was about 13.
Good to see you Ken.

Love really can hurt🥰
Razamanaz is even more characteristic of his voice.

Definitely Axl sounding. I was thinking a scratchy Meatloaf too. Maybe not.
