hey Steve, well done, you do a fantastic job on your videos and reviews, keep it up, congratulations!!! Would you mind if I make a suggestion about your riding tho? There are two major things that you're not doing right when you're riding these boards on your videos.. and I really recommend you to keep an eye on them, your performance will increase tremendously. 1) Your back foot must be placed farther behind, as close to the tail as you can, and most importantly, KEEP your toes inside the board. Always keep the top of your feet inside the board, never out. That will give you massive control over your turns cause it will allow you to take advantage of your heels properly to compress your knee in and out. 2) Dissociated arm position! Instead of riding it 'in parallel, which means, front arm following the direction of the front leg.. you should do the opposite (your back arm must be pointing in the direction you go, and so should your head). That will force you to keep your shoulders going forward.. and that's a massive game-changer. I've been riding surfskates for many years and also tried all the options out there.. my favorite is the Swelltech Hybrid Camo, and I ride mostly bowls/half pipes and transition ramps with it to practice all the surf movements. All these tips came from my SurfSkate instructor and made me perform a million times better. Try them out :)
Hell yes, you can give me riding tips! I need all the tips I can get. I'm not following some of this, but I'm going to apply everything I can figure out. Thanks so much, man!
So to keep my toe inside the board, would that mean I would want to turn my foot at more of an angle, toes more forward than heel? Any chance you can show me a video of both the points you're talking about?

@@SurfskateLove no. But I'd love to get into it. I was actually looking for a surf simulator before knowing about surfskates. I do come from a snowboarding background.
Hey steve. As of today, which is your favorite surfskate? Do you have a top 3 models you would recommend? I have tried on the website based on our needs the reommended surfskates but i would just like to have your own preferences.
hi steve, I am a beginner in surfskates, but wanted to buy a Carver. I am 5'10" and 75kg, what size/inches of board do you recommend for me? thanks and more power to you.
I am a beginner and I would recommend a carver with at least an 18 inch wheel base. It’s so much more stable and you can cruise for longer. I would go with the green room board ! Love it.
Many thanks, very very good videos you do. In the 80's, I've spent my youth ticktacking on a yellow Penny cruiser, then surfing at summer time, then snowboarding at winters. And 2 years ago, i've discovered surfskate. What a shock! Such a long long time... Exactly what I needed! Since last summer, i'm riding a YOW Pipe. Just amazing!!! Many thanks To SB3 in Labenne (Landes, France) who are the best professional people I've met in skate stuff 🙏😉
Good video i already have a waterborne adapter it works well on my electric skateboard but not than wel on my cruiser or longboard so im looking for some surfskatetrucks and maybe a deck
Thanks for your videos very informative especially the one on the surf trucks! Would be interesting to see your insight on it!!! Thanks again and hope to see your video with bombora deck!!!!
Hi Steve, incredible review! Thanks! Can you tell me if there are any wheel bites on Dark Pukas? My weight is 220 lbs and it bothers me a bit before buying. I would also like to know your opinion about whether the Meraki truck creaks. Thank you for what you're doing!
enjoyed the vid really helpful, I brought a board mainly on price its a Two Bare Feet 'Floe' 32" 360 Surfskate based in the UK for £80 as a trial boardto see how I get on many thanks middle aged shredder
I’ve made up my mind ages ago and collected nearly all my parts but the Carver C7 truck I want has been out of stock since forever :( They don’t reply to questions about restocking either
I have the new version of the Yow Pukas. It's my first board (I'm a beginner). I've been using it for about a month now and love it. The only bad thing about it is that I might be too short for it. I'm only 160 cm tall and I can't stand on the tail permanently because my legs are too short. So I always switch between standing on the tail when I want to turn with it (to lift it off the ground) and standing where the back bolts are. Still, I feel comfortable on it. I would also like to try carvers, but I want to get more experienced before I get a new board. And then definitely a smaller deck.
@@Acolyte_of_Cthulhu The 34.5 one - I am just 160 cm and my weight is around 54 kilos. So yeah, I am pretty light and small. I still love that board tho. It feels pretty stable, what's good for a beginner like me. But I doubt that I will be able to use it to its full potential.
Hi Steve, I'm just looking for my first surf skate and you have helped me a lot here. I fell in love with the Malibu. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be available for sale at the moment. But I keep looking. Greetings from Germany.
Yow has already added a 3D simulation of their boards (for at least 8 months - maybe as response to this clip?) to see the concave and shape. And they do have high concave boards in their stock at least for 5 years now (I own an old Yow Snappers). So that’s not the whole truth. But otherwise great work, you really love surfskating :)
Great video thank you. I have a swell tech ( got it when they were called Surfskate) and a carver Da Monsta. The swell tech is great for training way better than the carver but you can’t cruise at all. Rocks are even an issue for the swell tech. The carver is a great board you can pump and cruise but lacking in tight turns and it doesn’t feel like surfing not like the swell tech. So my question is I want something in the middle but I don’t want to make a $300 mistake! What do u think I just get
Hello Steve, from the vasc country, spain. I like smoothstar, i,m 187cm tall, like you. In this video you tell us that manta ray IS the BEST option for you, but in other videos we can see you riding Toledo 77. Please, tell me why. The manta ray is slightly cheaper than the toledo....¿?
Not sure what you're looking at, but I've never ridden the Toledo 77 in any videos. However, I did ride a friends' once and I actually prefer that over the Manta Ray. But you have to have no more than an 18" wide stance to ride the Toledo.
Beginner question here. I know the front truck/turn on these is usually very loose and snappy. My question is about the rear. In the Slalom and LDP worlds, skaters use low-angle trucks zero-25 degrees. Helps with powering forward. Surfskates appear to generally use 45-50-ish degree trucks. Much more turn from the rear - correct? Probably helps with "snap" moves. So...should the higher angle truck have soft bushings for a more responsive rear, or harder bushings for a more solid rear? I've tried a waterborne adapter rear once and it seemed to collapse super quick and was verrry tippy overall. Does the rear vary by beginner (more solid) and advanced (more tippy)? Thanks for your help.
Hi Steve - thank you for this resource. I am like you, a cruiser at heart (20 yr snowboarder, recently with hardboots, so carving is the thing that drew me to surfskate). Steering towards YOW (which I can get in Switzerland). Just had a question on width. I have size 12 Euro feet (mondo 29.5 ish). Is it better getting the Teahupoo (34" long, 19" WB, 10" wide) or something like an Arika (33" long, I think 19.5" WB?, 10.5" wide)? I would be a complete surfskate beginner, but I did test drive in the shop a Carver (not sure which, but it was short) and a YOW Teahupoo, and the YOW was way easier to initiate, and had more "lean travel" (not sure of the technical term). I wasn't fast, but I did get moving ok, and once I work out the limits of lean, I feel I will get a good rhythm. I am 5'10" and about 85kg (but aiming to be less in non-pandemic times). Just curious how foot length affects things... Generally, I do worry about how this would work with cruising (it's very twitchy on the front, and I can't imagine a skatepark at all to be honest). Having said that, I live on the side of a steep hill, so cruising is limited. But quite happy to burn energy at the local school playground practicing carving for winter... :-)
Hi Steve, let me thank you for the amazing work you do in your channel, I really appreciate! One question, I’m a 6’6” guy, i skated so much when I was younger, i practiced a lot of snowboard, so I’m comfortable on the deck..I measured my stance and it’s near 19”, do you think a 17-18” wheelbase is too narrow for me? I would go with Yow, and I noticed that 17-18” is the more common wb. Thank you!
Question- Why don't you buy your decks and trucks separate? I'm looking to get my first surfkskate soon. Being new to skating myself at 54, I started skating at the skatepark with my son two years ago. I'm full on hooked now and I'm comfortable carving bowls FS & BS on bigger 9.5-10.5 decks and 215 trucks and hard wheels. I really just want something for the driveway, street and parking lots without the full skate park experience. I'm just planning on finding the right trucks and slapping them on one of my decks I'm already super comfortable on. I have it narrowed down to Yow or Smoothstar. I've surfed, windsurfed and SUP'd for years but I'm not looking to do blow tails skating, just carving and pumping. Which trucks would you recommend?
You can certainly do that if you have the knowledge, but if you've never tried surfskates before, it's very difficult to put together your own set-up that you love. And for what you're describing, I would probably recommend the Waterborne surf adapter for you to start with.
What carver would you recommend I am 6 foot two as well. Do you have a dealer that I could buy from in the United States I’m having a hard time finding these.
Hey Steve, fellow Utahn here! Thanks for the videos! I'm in my late 40's and used to skate back in the 80's-90's. I've been wanting to get back on a board so I built an electric skateboard a couple years ago. It was fun, but potentially too dangerous and not for me. Lately I've been wanting just a regular longboard and stumbled across your Surfskate vids and am sold on the idea. I'm a fabricator/welder and tinkerer so I'm going to grab one of the Waterborne kits to mess around with. I'm in Central Utah, but love going down to St. George. The scenic paved trails in Ivins before Snow State park are my favorite and can't wait to get down there when I get a board and cruise! Are there any Surfskate groups/rides down there?
Hi man I like your videos! I'm a snowboarder and would like too get in surfskate to keep my snowboerding intact and warmed up.. is this(surfskate) something you recommend also to snowboarders and surfers alike? Looking too grab a 77 smoothstar or something smaller I'm 73kg 175cm wide kinda guy.. Have a good one(:
Thanks Steve for providing so much information for the community. I am debating between a YOW Pipe Power and a YOW Lakey Peterson Peak Power. From my research, the main difference is concave. One is performance concave (which I assume means deeper concave) and the other is medium concave. The other is the wheelbase difference of 0.5 inches (18.5 vs 19 both falls into my comfort category). Based on your experience that YOW's concave is generally really low and flat, which one would you recommend?
Hi Steve!! Thank you the video! I would like training carving and turning techniques to the snowboard. I would like learning deep carving in the snowboard, and i think this surfskate movements very similar. I don' t like long cruising (my city hasn't big good place). I'm interested in the techniques on little place (etc car parking). I am about 167cm and 80kg, what do you think, which surfskate good for this practice from EU?? Thank you!! Bye!!👊😉
Hi and thank you for the very useful video. So I think I chunked down my choice but still have some doubts. I'm a total beginner, 190 cm tall. My finalists are: Carver 36.5" 777 C7 Carver 33.75" Greenroom C7 Smoothstar Manta Ray 35.5" YOW x Pukas Dark 34.5" YOW Byron Bay 38″ All kinda out of budget but I'll worry about that once I know how big is my problem :) What's the difference in feeling between meraki S5 and Carver C7? And then I wanted to ask you what you think of globe Surfskate? Thanks a lot for everything!!
Thank you so much for uploading this video! I've been wanting to skate for a long long time but kinda never had the courage to actually go for it. I've also been worried about buying a wrong skateboard because there aren't really any shops nearby where I could ask for help, so buying one online is the "best" option 😅 Now I've never been skating (except for trying it once or twice but you can't call that skating at all😂) but I am very interested in surfskates! I've been trying to do quite some research and I am very happy that I found your video!😊 Would you recommend the YOW PUKAS DARK 34.5'' to a complete beginner who's more interested in cruising than doing tricks, etc.? Because somewhere I've read that YOW is more suitable for experienced skaters. There are so many different opinions online, it is quite hard to know which one to choose.😅 Oh and I am somewhere between 6' and 6'1😂🙋🏼♀️ Greetings from Switzerland!🇨🇭🇨🇭🇨🇭💜
Hey Steve, thanks so much for all the insight and help. I’m also on the older end of the spectrum, i already surf skate a bit, but am looking to get into riding pools/bowls after watching your inspiring vids. Amazing where you got to from day 1 to day 30. Currently I just “borrow” my wife’s surf skate, a carver w/ a 15” wheelbase, but my stance is actually 18. So, looking to get a new board. Couple of questions, would you recommend a CX or C7 truck? Also, what are your thoughts on the tail for pool riding, in terms of kick, width, or shape? Thanks a lot and happy holidays!
I don't know Globe or Impala, and I only know Miller from pictures, so I know that it's a CX knock-off. So I can't speak to Miller specifically, but I can say that I've tried several CX knock-offs and none of them are as good as the original. But they do work.
@@SurfskateLove Thanks for your reply. And what would your best option be for surf skating and cruising regarding yow boards such as Teahupoo, Padang Padang, Cristenson Lane and Pyzel Ghost? I am 1,86 cm and 77 kg
Awesome video, so that raises the question for me, i am looking for a YOW, Is going for a 17 inch wheelbase to short for me or should i better go for a 19 inch looking at my heigh? I am 6.3 tall I am looking for a board to make tight turns and more surfy feel. And why is the lenght of the board so important? Becuase i own a carver 31,75 inch 19 inch wb CX truck currently. But going to a longer board with shorter wheelbase doesnt make much difference does it? Because you can’t put your feet over the wheels otherwhise you nose dive so you dont really make use of that extra space on the board. Or am i seeing this wrong?
It gets even more nuanced because certain trucks allow you to move up further on the deck. For example, on both Carvers and Slides you can stand pretty much right on top of the truck. But with others, like Smoothstar and SwellTech, you have to be behind the truck to maintain the proper balance. You're right that wheelbase is actually more important than length. So a 17" wheelbase may work well on a Carver truck. But I'm 6'2" and I tried the YOW Padang Padang, which has a 17" wheelbase," and I found it to be to tight and therefore squirrely for my stance. But that could also very well be a stance and personal preference thing. Meaning, you may find a 17" wheelbase perfect. I highly recommend the Soulboardiy Revolution Adam, which has an adjustable wheelbase of 17.25" and 19.5". But you'll really just have to play with it to dial in your perfect specs. And for that I highly recommend that you just play with decks you find around, versus buying completes. I honestly think you can find better decks outside of surfskating than you find on most completes (outside of Carvers).
Great video with alot of information ! Im getting Carver Reisn for pump tracks but my friend wants something longer for the same usage . Do you think Yow (Kontiki maybe?) will suit for that reason ?
@@SurfskateLove i started surfskate at standard 40-ish cm wheelbase. After a year, during covid i bought a 101cm deck and drill a dozen set of holes to test the wheelbase, now around 60-ish cm is the best for me.

So there's actually a funny story behind that. I'll spare you the details. The bottom line is, I'm in a new apartment and I don't have my tools, which are packed away. So I was making do with what limited tools I have. 😂
Love the information given and the way you organized this. This Very efficient and easy for the viewer
How do you not have more subs. This channel will definitely blow up.
Thanks Steve !!, after I watched your reviews and I got lucky, I bought a last stock of YOW and its YOW x Pukas Dark and its awesome board just like you said..thanks mate !!
That's great to hear! Enjoy!
Thank you so much man, for the great review and recommendations.
Really really informative videos I was searching for days to understand the differences and OMG what an amazing comparing and details thank you from Egypt ♥
Very informative for new surfskaters! Thanks
You're a hero! Thanks 🦭
Great video and so detailed! I really want to get my hands on Smoothstar but saw the SwellTech on pre-order sell and its turns out to be a really good value pick. Let's hope I can survive learning from it
Good luck with that! Are you a surfer?

Love it.

Excellent video thanks so much!
i would love to see a review on twobarefeet brand!
This is a very helpful video - well done!
Thanks for your videos very informative especially the one on the surf trucks! I have Bombora 59' long kahuna creations deck with waterborne surf trucks installed and it takes a lot of energy to pump on it but once you get this thing rolling it really feels like surfing!!!

Hi Steve, incredible review! Thanks! Can you tell me if there are any wheel bites on Dark Pukas? My weight is 220 lbs and it bothers me a bit before buying. I would also like to know your opinion about whether the Meraki truck creaks. Thank you for what you're doing!

I’ve made up my mind ages ago and collected nearly all my parts but the Carver C7 truck I want has been out of stock since forever :( They don’t reply to questions about restocking either
Nope. Good luck getting any of the big companies to respond to you about anything. Sorry to hear that, man. Friggin COVID. 😒
And then definitely a smaller deck.
the 34 inch?
@@Acolyte_of_Cthulhu The 34.5 one - I am just 160 cm and my weight is around 54 kilos. So yeah, I am pretty light and small. I still love that board tho. It feels pretty stable, what's good for a beginner like me. But I doubt that I will be able to use it to its full potential.
@@Karfunkelfuchs I was just wondering since i got me the hobo 32.5 inch and thought it was too big for me, as im 167 and 85kg old fart.
Can you elaborate on why to avoid carvers with colored tops?😅

Thank you!
Hi Steve, I'm just looking for my first surf skate and you have helped me a lot here. I fell in love with the Malibu. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be available for sale at the moment. But I keep looking. Greetings from Germany.
Yeah everyone is out of stock right now. Same story everywhere.
Amazing guide. I'm in the middle of getting into surf skating and I just need to get a board so thanks so much for the trouble you went to make this.
My pleasure! Thanks so much!
Very limited wheelbase options on their high concave models.
Great stuff! very useful video
do you know anything about NKX surfskates? specifically Maverick version looks appealing to me.
I've seen them online, haven't tried them yet.
Have you covered Odyssey surfskates from Singapore?
Btw - currently have a hard bushing, Bennett rear on a 1" riser. Would a more "dead" rear (less turny) with looser bushings be a better idea?
The general principle is that you want a more solid rear. That's what creates thrust.
Would you recommend the Penny Highland or a Carver one? Maybe the Carver Swallow with the CX Trucks?

Thanks a lot for this amazing knowledge compilation! You did an awesome work, thanks again :)
Thank you! Glad you found it helpful. I just try to give people what I wish I had when I was starting out.
@@SurfskateLove You nailed it then :')
Thank you!
That's definitely too narrow for you on a YOW because of the wheelbase offset. Try my Surfskate Selector: surfskate.love/surfskate-selector/
@@SurfskateLove Thanks!!
oh, thank you so much, it's a very good review!
You're welcome! Just trying to give people what I wish I had when I was starting out.
Hit me up next time you're down here!
When you get a board, should you loosen the trucks first thing or ride it a bit before adjusting the flex?
Hi man I like your videos!
I'm a snowboarder and would like too get in surfskate to keep my snowboerding intact and warmed up.. is this(surfskate) something you recommend also to snowboarders and surfers alike?
Looking too grab a 77 smoothstar or something smaller I'm 73kg 175cm wide kinda guy..
Have a good one(:
Hell yes! You'll have such a blast. Tons of snowboarders surfskate.
Performance concave is not deeper than medium. It's between low and medium. You can check the 3d viewer on Yow's website.
They've changed all their deck molds to add more concave since I made this video.
Hello mate I have quick question in a surfer not a skater and wanna get in to it.. what ur thoughts on the Koastal clasic 44inch

Thank you!!

Definitely Smoothstar for what you're describing.
Hi and thank you for the very useful video. So I think I chunked down my choice but still have some doubts. I'm a total beginner, 190 cm tall. My finalists are:
Carver 36.5" 777 C7
Carver 33.75" Greenroom C7
Smoothstar Manta Ray 35.5"
YOW x Pukas Dark 34.5"
YOW Byron Bay 38″
All kinda out of budget but I'll worry about that once I know how big is my problem :)
What's the difference in feeling between meraki S5 and Carver C7?
And then I wanted to ask you what you think of globe Surfskate?
Thanks a lot for everything!!

Good video mate… but what about sector 9, they still exist??
They don't make surfskates.
I've been trying to do quite some research and I am very happy that I found your video!😊
Would you recommend the YOW PUKAS DARK 34.5'' to a complete beginner who's more interested in cruising than doing tricks, etc.? Because somewhere I've read that YOW is more suitable for experienced skaters. There are so many different opinions online, it is quite hard to know which one to choose.😅 Oh and I am somewhere between 6' and 6'1😂🙋🏼♀️
Greetings from Switzerland!🇨🇭🇨🇭🇨🇭💜
I would say Carver CX is better for you based on what you're describing.
I just wrote a blog post about this:

Go with Black Tip CX.
Hello, what is your opinion on globe boards, impala or miller for surf skating? Are there any specific model you would suggest us?
I don't know Globe or Impala, and I only know Miller from pictures, so I know that it's a CX knock-off. So I can't speak to Miller specifically, but I can say that I've tried several CX knock-offs and none of them are as good as the original. But they do work.
@@SurfskateLove Thanks for your reply. And what would your best option be for surf skating and cruising regarding yow boards such as Teahupoo, Padang Padang, Cristenson Lane and Pyzel Ghost? I am 1,86 cm and 77 kg
What do you thinking about getting a carver c7 with an adjustable wheelbase deck? Or drill my own holes?
Why not?
im just 5.4 wondering is a 32 inch board is too big? im adult btw got me the Carver Hobo 32.5" C7
@@SurfskateLove thank you very much on your indepth anwser
Great video with alot of information ! Im getting Carver Reisn for pump tracks but my friend wants something longer for the same usage . Do you think Yow (Kontiki maybe?) will suit for that reason ?
No, I think the looser the trucks, the less suited they are for a pump track. My preferred truck for pump tracks is Carver CX.

@@shukobanana1497 My pleasure, my friend!
I have been using 61-66cm wheelbase for cx and smoothstar. And i am 168cm tall.

@@SurfskateLove i started surfskate at standard 40-ish cm wheelbase. After a year, during covid i bought a 101cm deck and drill a dozen set of holes to test the wheelbase, now around 60-ish cm is the best for me.
