What Happened To The Enterprise-B? - Star Trek Starships Explained

  • The Enterprise is the legendary icon of Star Trek! While we know the fate of most of the starships called Enterprise, apart from whatever Mr Worf did to the USS Enterprise-E, the USS Enterprise-B is still a mystery. It made one proper appearance in the movie “Star Trek: Generations”, but we don’t know anything about it after that. Except that most of it’s stuff was installed on Tuesday of course.

I forget which novel or sourcebook (definitely not primary canon) that I saw it in, but that the idea was that the Enterprise-B subclass' 'cheeks' on the secondary hull were side-projecting sensor arrays powerful enough to see deep into the neutral zone and keep track of Romulan vessels. The ships could race up and down the border getting as much sensor data as possible and creating a database of Romulan vessels identified by their various energy signatures.
Like tracking and identifying IRL submarines by the quirks of their machinery noises.

Well, in Picard, the only Enterprises we know survived into the 24th century are the original NX-01 (modified sometime after the end of the Enterprise), the Enterprise A, and the D, though technically just the saucer section paired up with the stardrive section of another Galaxy class ship. Which means it’s in kind of a Starship of Theseus scenario.

There's just something with the design that doesn't sit right with me. I'm guessing since I'm not a fan of the C either that part of it is the angled nacelle pylons. It just feels out of place when generally each iteration gets smoother and more blended.
I rather like the main saucer, and the 4 impulse look, and given a choice, I prefer the "cheeks" version of the secondary over the smooth.

Ive always wondered what the in universe explanation was as to why earth always seems to be woefully short on starships when it hits the fan.
Aside from having multiple shipyards in system or nearby, youd think being the seat of power would rate some kind of prestige fleet reserve just for image.
Or at least some kind of "first step/last line" of starbases in the near vicinity with either permanent ships or enough traffic in and out to qualify as an emergency reaction force.
I know starfleet "isnt military" except when they are, but it still seems like a glaring oversight.

Especially after Earth was attacked by the Zindi and the Breen. A Borg cube reached earth twice. When Voyager returned home 18 ships with an additional 9 were sent to intercept the Borg sphere that carried Voyager home. Starfleet definitely needs some sort of home defense fleet.

  • @paulkirby2761

Far more importantly I'd like to know exactly what's going on with that Excelsior Class so-called secondary shuttle bay underneath.
There's all sorts of technical looking bits and pieces there, a very deflector or warp core looking blue light going on and lots of exposed bulkheads and beams without floors, walls or ceiling, and no bay doors. Whoever designed this model intentionally put a lot of work and focus into to it for a reason but there ain't no way that's for shuttles or vessels of any kind. Looks more like some docking frame in there for a space station to clasp with or something else.
If would have been far easier for the designer and model construction to simply close it off, add shuttle bay doors and a photon torp launcher, windows etc but they took a far more complicated approach to that area of the ship and it must have been for a very good reason. It's always triggered my interest and we rarely get to see a good look at what's actually there in great detail.

I've always enjoyed the canon that the Enterprise B was under the command of Sulu's daughter and was lost due to a pathogen in the Beta quadrant. I even used that as an opening to a fanfic where the last of the crew are about to set the self-destruct before they fall victim to the pathogen to keep the ship from falling into the wrong hands then end up being transported to the Delta quadrant when Voyager falls prey to a Hirogen attack, the crew forced to use the Enterprise B as Voyager is nearly destroyed before being rescued. Too bad I never got past a few chapters, few people want to read my type of off-brand fanfiction and I wasn't going to write it for no one to read.

Seven's crew are able to get back with the G being far more advanced being able to utilize what ever brought them to said place where the B resided. All records recovered by Seven and her crew. In the Enterprise technical manual, it's explained that the Enterprise-B had a somewhat illustrious career after the events of Generations (which saw Harriman relieved of command). In the Tomed Incident of 2311, the Enterprise-B had a cloaking device installed and entered the Neutral Zone. Following that, Demora Sulu was promoted to Captain and took the ship on a 4-year exploration mission. In 2329, while on another such mission, the entire ship contracted a mysterious and ultimately uncontrollable virus that wiped out the crew. (It's worth noting that both that book and the Next Generation Technical Manual clearly state that the Enterprise-A was the Yorktown repaired and renamed).

There is a commemorative plaque dedicated to the earlier vessels named Enterprise and the small components that were incorporated in 1701-B.
This tradition actually goes back to the late 20th century started as a joke by some p/t Nasa interns that were part of the workforce that was prepping the Space Shuttle Enterprise for transportation to it's final mission as a museum piece.
The interns snuck several box end and socket wrench tools and proceeded to remove 6 bolts and nuts from Space Shuttle Enterprise's zero G toilet mockup and a grand tradition was born!
In an event lost to time 1701's very first Captain Robert T April handed this historic paper sandwich bag now over 200 years old to his Chief Engineer and told him to get on it.
After much swearing and drilling the Chief Engineer was finally able to use those 6 historic bolts to secure the captain's toilet to the deck in his quarter's head.
Decades later when the broken down hulk of the soon to be former USS Yorktown was towed into Spacedock to hastily have it's name and registry number scraped off Commander Scott continued the tradition. While prepping Enterprise to be stolen he quickly removed the bolts from Kirks toilet.
Scotty had a hunch if he didn't do it then there was a good chance that the beat up Enterprise would not be coming back. And after handing the legendary commode fittings to a jr. grade tech to install the fittings and the proud tradition continued!

It was only called 'Enterprise', not 'U.S.S. Enterprise'. This may seem like a hypertechnicality to some, but one thing I've learned from dealing with bureaucrats (and Starfleet is known for having a LOT of them!) is that hypertechnicalities can make all the difference.

Third ‘Federation’ Enterprise, the NX-01 was pre-Federation

    • @JonThomas92
      @JonThomas92 Месяц назад +1

By the time the federation had formed, Starfleet had moved away from the old NX's onto Warp 7 capable ships. Enterprise was the first NX so it makes sense that by the time the federation had been finalized and the United Earth Starfleet had been folded into the Federation Starfleet the NX-01 had been decommissioned.

When did Tuvok go from Excelsior to the Enterprise B? You would think Sulu would be smart and keep a Vulcan onboard unless the new captain thought it wouldn't be The Enterprise without one.

They were in denial. It was absolutely the Fed military. They simply tried to spend more time on bunting and goodwill tours than gunnery & fleet exercises. Wolf 359 & Dominion war shook them up enough to wake back up.

Even if we keep it just to humanity what happens if they keep the tradition on naming there days sequentially m-s Tuesday on Earth isn't going to mean a lot on Mars.

I believed that the USS Enterprise B's crew was wiped out by a plague. Starfleet flagships defeat to a virus brought shame to Starfleet and the Federation who proudly trailblazed science and medical technology.
They recovered the vessel; which was still a powerhouse of a ship, and rechristened it to the USS Lakota where it humbly served Starfleet up to the Dominion war.
The "USS Lakota" stood a decent chance against the modern USS Defiant due to it being overpowered for its time. It is the only Excelsior class to have the Enterprise B's unique variant design seen while normal Excelsiors were still to be found in active service.

Plot hole they were creating. 😂 bless them for trying though.

@0:37 -- "With the arrival of the Enterprise-C in STNG, we know something must have happened to the -B." I disagree with the assumption that the Enterprise-B must have suffered some kind of bad fate. Sometimes, ships just reach the end of their service life and are retired.

    • @jonseyrocks3226
      @jonseyrocks3226 Месяц назад

This is the Enterprise we're talking about. So far, only the NX and the "-A" have managed to make it to retirement (and even then both had significantly shorter service lives, with the A only getting 7 years). The No-Bloody-A, C, and D all fell in battle. The F was slated for early decommissioning (was it ever officially explained why?), and what happened to the E was so horrifying that it could not be said out loud, though Worf still claims innocence.
Seems like being named the Enterprise raises the chances of the ship not making it to its planned EOL significantly.
