Oh my god finally someone sees Ocean's 12 like I do. Like the question is how do you follow up 11? It's such a solid movie? You make a satire and don't tell anyone. I love 12 so much.
Blumpth I watched all three Ocean’s for the first time this week and I totally agree. I went into 12 worried that it was just going to be 11 except in Europe (and having been told that it was the least good of the trilogy), but it was so fun! You’re right, Soderbergh knew he couldn’t do 11 again so he went in a different direction and I think it worked!
all three of the movies are amazing and clever in their own right. they're an easy watch and they're brilliantly made, genre creating and also have great casts so what's to lose?

Silence of the lambs is possibly my favourite film of all time. It was new years eve, I was about eight and my grandma was watching it on the tv. She fell asleep early in the film (it was 2am) and I was just absorbed by it. I hid behind the sofa as soon as Hannibal was shown on the screen. I watched the rest of the film then before falling asleep behind the sofa. I had nightmares the next few nights afterwards and told nobody. I'm now a 15 year old film lover who finally plucked up the courage to watch it again last year. @@JackHoward Oh, I absolutely loved it! It has a kind of short film quality/vibe to it. Although the scenes were not fast paced or felt rushed at all, it flew by. Jack I can fully recommend the sister brothers if you havent seen it. Stars john c Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix as the brothers which are an unlikely but enjoyable duo, with Jake gyllenhaal as a really interesting character and riz Ahmed as just THE NICEST GUY. It's a sweet but aimless story that really shows a more real side to the life of cowboys and a really strong brotherly bond that is pushed to its limits through greed and conflict and death. There's always an animated movie to watch, sometimes they're for kids, other times they're for adults, and then rarely they're in-between. Here's 3 animated movies to watch on Netflix at this time: - A Silent Voice - The Breadwinner - Lu Over the Wall
A few of mine are cliche. Empire Strikes Back - One of the biggest twist in movie history. Bladerunner 2049 - Well we know why. Perfection. Inception - An action packed mind fuck and Leo Dicaprio doing his best Leo Dicaprio. The Birdcage - Robin Williams at the height of his career. Nathan Lane and Hank Azarzzi round out the trio, and without all three of them working in sync the movie would have been mediocre. Brokeback Mountain - A classic cowboy movie of how a boy meets boy. Psycho - Hitchcock at the top of his game. The Shining - Creeps with a twist. Children of Men - Bleak, haunting and painfully beautiful dystopian film with a very sad warning at a very plausible future. Chicago - A classic musical satire about the power of fame. A familiar theme that's as old as Shakespeare. I could see Beyonce and Lady Gaga as the main characters. American Beauty - A beautiful film that makes you appreciate everybody you love. I cried my eyes out as the credits rolled. The movie would have never. achieved greatness without the soundtrack by Thomas Newman. The writer Alan Ball would collaborated with Thomas Newman on the series Six Feet Under which I would say is the greatest series of all time. You must, you must watch it. I adore it. it helped me through a terrible breakdown. Ok, let's talk about the rapey elephant in the room. Yes, it's ok to celebrate an flawed artist who has done terrible things. We celebrated Charlie Chaplin and Picasso; they slept with younger women. Elvis met Priscilla at 14. And the highly-esteemed Ghandi; he is known for sleeping with underage girls.
Jack's videos are some of the few that I don't crank the playback speed all the way up because he really understands what makes something nice to watch, and that's why I trust his recommendations
I watch these movie rec videos by Jack everytime he talks about them knowing full well I only watch trash and will never see any of the recs, but theres something so compelling about the way he talks about these movies. Edit: ok i might watch when harry met sally
the best thing about watching jack Howard's youtube channel is that in 30 years you'll be able to say that you were watching him before he was world famous for being an incredible director and his excellent understanding of all film
If you want good films on Netflix that you probably haven't seen try City of God, I think it's amazing and people tend not to watch it unless they're into film because it's in Portuguese but if you read ths subtitles it still works great and its so so good
My favourite scene in film maybe of all time (regarding acting/directing not epicness) is in Oceans Eleven where George Clooney and Brad Pitt have a conversation and you only really see Pitt reacting without talking to what Clooney is saying, but Clooney knows exactly what Pitt thinks and so do we as the audience...it's amazing
thank god ur back to tell me what to watch jack howard netflix has been k*lling me with choice. ALSO the bit with the ocean's eleven scene, i'd love to hear u talk abt ur favourite scenes like that? analysis i guess?? idk i just like hearing you talk abt film technicalities
You should definitely do a video about American Beauty and movie-watching ethics post MeToo era - I've put off watching American Beauty due to my unwillingness to support or give space to abusers etc, but I'm always unsure whether it's even possible to be a perfectly "ethical" film viewer, or whether you should be able to watch and/or appreciate a Woody Allen film, or a Kevin Spacey film, or whatever - I'd really love to know your thoughts on it!
This is a great list, A bunch of these movies are ones I’ve heard about so many times but with all that’s on Netflix I didn’t even realise Half of these were on here! You should do another one with TV shows, my 3 biggest recommendations for TV on Netflix is Community (Comedy), American Horror Story (Horror/Satire) and Haunting of Hill House (Horror/Family Drama), all amazing, smart, underrated shows that deserve to be talked about way more than they are.
So down to start knocking these films out. I have been on a real tv kick and I watched a full length film the other day, there is something really satisfying about a plot that doesn’t need 12 hours to make sense
I honestly really enjoyed Oceans 8 and think it's worth the watch. I saw Oceans 11 for the first time last week and absolutely loved it but still need to watch the others!
Sadly some of them aren't on Netflix anymore. I have a problem with the usability of Netflix. I don't get why Netflix doesn't inform you about ending screening? And why is the search so bad?
Please do make a video about art vs artist controversy! It’s something I really struggle with as a film student - so many beautiful films have been created by so many awful people and I honestly do not know where I stand on many of them and as someone with an in-depth and complex understanding of cinema I would be really interested to hear your point of view.
my media of consumption class (i'm studying film) just watched ex machina this week and discussed it! it was a re-watch for me but such a great film to finish the semester off. great discussion! and great recommendations :)
I would love to hear your thoughts on the horror genre and some of your favourites! silence of the lambs is an incredible film but I also haven't seen the exorcist 👀
My top 10 (Not in any specific order) 1) Whiplash 2) Django unchained 3) Uncut gems 4) Terminator 1 5) Saving Private Ryan 6) This is the end 7) Up 8) Rocky 9) Gravity 10) The departed
Ignored it last time but it’s been twice now and I can’t anymore: VPN stands for Virtual PRIVATE Network. It doesn’t really matter and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s referred to as that in the ad brief but it ground my gears last time and it still continues to.
Director of boyhood is doing an adaptation of Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along, a musical which takes place over like 30 years. And it's being made over that timespan
I absolutely adore the excitement for boyhood, I love that movie and I first saw it with my father at the cinema, and we don't talk anymore. It got me fuck up cause I was about to move out to go to collage. The visual, the story, how soft and silent it is it's beautiful.
Always enjoy hearing you talk about films. But I have one question; what do people have against oceans 12 and 13?? I really don’t see anything to dislike in either.

Huge question, Jack. You're a John Hughes fan - but what are your feelings on 'Sixteen Candles'? I personally grew up with this film and up until very recently (since watching it again for the first time in a number of years) it held a special place in my heart, much like the Breakfast Club does. Since the re-watch however, it's been entirely ruined. I now find it to be hugely problematic and at times, incredibly sinister. Sexist, racist, abuse and rape all feature in this film and yet there seems to be a lot of dismissal around these themes from audiences in favour of it's nostalgic value. I would love to hear what are your thoughts on the aging of this film? Laura
Love it, thanks for the recommendations to help us grind out this lockdown! Awesome to see some of my favorites in the list, as well as a couple that I've weirdly missed out on! Time for some movie homework!!! :)
Jack, what do you think about Wes Anderson as a director and his films? He’s one of my favourite directors and I would like to know your opinion on his work.
Also, The Place Beyond the Pines is leaving Netflix in a few weeks and I just saw it for the first time and it is already one of my favorites of all time. PLEASE WATCH IT! It is so under appreciated. Also, at one point at the end of the first act, the rug gets pulled out from under you. Pleeeease don’t check out at that point, just roll with it and I think you’ll get a lot out of it.
I have a similar attachment to gladiator as you mentioned with the silence of the lambs - one night my mam just said “have you not seen this?” and then BAM. Magic.
my 10 would probably be (idk what order because it switches a lot for me): 1. Miseducation of Cameron Post 2. Another Country 3. This is England 4. the big short 5. good will hunting 6. Withnal and I (this was originally history boys but idk) 7. ladybird 8. gone girl 9. the fundamentals of caring 10. Colette (11. I really wanted to put England is mine but I'm not sure if it fits on this list or not) I realise a lot of these films are LGBTQ+ but its hard to relate to a story or film where you don't identify with anyone in it. Like I know some of these films may not be cinematic masterpieces but I just really think everyone should watch them. Also I know that you don't need to relate to a film in order to enjoy it but it does make it harder to empathise with characters if you already have a separation.
I would love to see a video talking about films with actors who have since done something illegal or wrong that taints the film. My boyfriend and I were just discussing Glee and Smallville and how we don't think we'd be able to enjoy or even watch these anymore due to some of the cast members and their awful crimes.
I carry a deep, deep love for American Beauty. Like Jack said, I understand why people would feel put off by the film nowadays, but movie experiences are such a personal thing sometimes, it's almost impossible to put into words the attachment I have for this one. First time I saw it was when it came out, back in 1999/2000 (it might have come a bit late to my country), *with* my parents. I was 10 years old. My parents had no idea what movie we were going into, but we were on vacation and this was playing one evening at this lovely outdoor cinema that was 5 min form where we were staying, that they kinda went "fuck it, let's check this out". And I distinctly remember it being a roller-coaster of emotions I could not fully understand and contextualize. I felt like I was watching something so familiarly sad and yet so far removed form my own experiences. Like I was nostalgic for something I had not yet lost. It sounds pretentious as all hell, but I came out of that first watch completely changed. My parents felt awkward, obviously, I was 10, they probably thought "shit, did we just damage our child with this movie". But even the awkwardness fed into the experience. I remember that there were these 20 something guys sitting in front of us who were just complete jocks and they started making crass comments at the sight of nudity in certain scenes, and I swear, I felt so mad in that moment, all I could think of was "I don't fully understand this movie, but clearly, you understand it even less than I do.". I think that the sadness I felt after that first viewing was fueled in part by the story itself and in part by the realization that some people are so uncomfortable with letting themselves be vulnerable and *feel* that they completely miss out on beautiful things in life. I felt sad for those 20 something guys laughing at tits on a screen. And each new viewing has added layers and layers to my attachment. I rewatched the movie in highschool at 15-16, when I was a ball of teen angst and depression, then again in my early 20s when my self-destructive tendencies had peaked and I was probably at my lowest. It showed me in which ways I had grown and in which ways I stayed exactly the same. Each time I watch it, it's like I'm sitting down with one of those friends one rarely gets to see but who makes one feel at ease and at home. And it's even cooler now, that I'm in my late 20s, and I can appreciate its craftsmanship more than I ever could before. I know that my opinion of this movie cannot be objective, so I never let myself get too excited when I recommend it to people. It makes me very happy to see Jack put it on his list. Also, yes, Ocean's Eleven. When I don't know what to watch on Netflix, I just watch Ocean's Eleven for the 50th time.
mate, will you pleasee make a review on “you were never really here”??; just watched it and i’m intrigued, perplexed and satisfied all at the same time... i’d love to hear your interpretation of it!
Having watched Sunshine last night, and adoring Annihilation, I now firmly believe that Alex Garland is one of the finest writer-directors working today. And I haven't even seen Ex Machina yet
I've been subscribed to this channel for god knows how many years now. I never comment, because I don't watch films. Like, I'm one of those people who goes to the cinema once every five years. I cannot stress how much I do not watch films. But I'm still here, because I love how you talk about them so much it doesn't matter. Just felt compelled to mention that. Always excited to see you upload!
Anyone who wants to watch Boyhood. Here’s my review. I’m a very nostalgic person, and this movie made me cry. Movies don’t make me cry. The only movie that’s made me cry other than this was Avengers: Endgame. This movie will make you nostalgiac, sad, happy, mad, this movie is an adventure. And that’s what I have to say!

"im difficult" best when harry met all scene
There's always an animated movie to watch, sometimes they're for kids, other times they're for adults, and then rarely they're in-between. Here's 3 animated movies to watch on Netflix at this time:
- A Silent Voice
- The Breadwinner
- Lu Over the Wall
THANKS JACK. Quarantine to do list part 2
You think we need one more? Alright we'll get one more.
Jack, make this a Letterboxd list now that you're on there!
1 - The Room
2 - Catwoman
3 - Gods of Egypt
4 - Street Fighter
5 - Cats
6 - Showgirls
7 - Batman & Robin
8 - Earth Girls Are Easy
9 - Winter's Tale
10 - Xanadu
Can i suggest, have a watch on this Indonesian film; Love for sale. I just feel like more people should watch it.
thank god ur back to tell me what to watch jack howard netflix has been k*lling me with choice.
Ur talking about the ads and I'm already subscribed with notifications on
I love how jack Howard is back and looks like he's really enjoying making videos which makes me so happy!
Please PLEASE make a video about whether we can/should separate the art from the artist! I’d love to hear your take.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021). It’s four hours long, it’s fresh with fans and critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s on HBO Max.
Yesss. I’d love your take on the debate around separating the art from the artist 👌🏽
Yes! You Were Never Really Here is one of my favourite films ever. It honestly changed film for me, I can't recommend it enough
Sadly some of them aren't on Netflix anymore. I have a problem with the usability of Netflix. I don't get why Netflix doesn't inform you about ending screening? And why is the search so bad?
Please do make a video about art vs artist controversy! It’s something I really struggle with as a film student - so many beautiful films have been created by so many awful people and I honestly do not know where I stand on many of them and as someone with an in-depth and complex understanding of cinema I would be really interested to hear your point of view.
my media of consumption class (i'm studying film) just watched ex machina this week and discussed it! it was a re-watch for me but such a great film to finish the semester off. great discussion! and great recommendations :)
watch ocean's 8! It's so fun!
I would love to hear your thoughts on the horror genre and some of your favourites! silence of the lambs is an incredible film but I also haven't seen the exorcist 👀
My top 10 (Not in any specific order)
1) Whiplash
2) Django unchained
3) Uncut gems
4) Terminator 1
5) Saving Private Ryan
6) This is the end
7) Up
8) Rocky
9) Gravity
10) The departed
Watch “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” (2021). It’s four hours long, it’s fresh with fans and critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s on HBO Max..
Ignored it last time but it’s been twice now and I can’t anymore: VPN stands for Virtual PRIVATE Network. It doesn’t really matter and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s referred to as that in the ad brief but it ground my gears last time and it still continues to.
I agree with your feelings about the weirdly comforting tone of The Silence of The Lambs
what podcast did you tell him youve never seen The Exorcist? I've listened to every single one...I think and don't remember it.
MrTCBrady It might not have been on the pod, they are friends who talk after all. Or it may not just be out yet.
@@josephdixonbowley8239 true, i guess him following the line about having a podcast to talk about it had me confused
Director of boyhood is doing an adaptation of Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along, a musical which takes place over like 30 years. And it's being made over that timespan
'Give oceans 12 a chance' he says, not giving oceans 8 a chance
ALRIGHT FINE
I got surfshark using your promo code, thank you Jack.
I absolutely adore the excitement for boyhood, I love that movie and I first saw it with my father at the cinema, and we don't talk anymore. It got me fuck up cause I was about to move out to go to collage. The visual, the story, how soft and silent it is it's beautiful.
breakfast club is SPECTACULAR
Always enjoy hearing you talk about films. But I have one question; what do people have against oceans 12 and 13?? I really don’t see anything to dislike in either.
12 angry men, psycho, breakfast club are some that are I think are essential

your film recs are always belter & a vid on separating the art from the artist would be boss
Oceans 12 is amazing. Definitely my favourite
Watch buck breaking by Tariq Nasheed
Jack, what do you think about Wes Anderson as a director and his films? He’s one of my favourite directors and I would like to know your opinion on his work.
Also, The Place Beyond the Pines is leaving Netflix in a few weeks and I just saw it for the first time and it is already one of my favorites of all time. PLEASE WATCH IT! It is so under appreciated.
Also, at one point at the end of the first act, the rug gets pulled out from under you. Pleeeease don’t check out at that point, just roll with it and I think you’ll get a lot out of it.
I LOVE that movie!
Watch “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” (2021). It’s four hours long, it’s fresh with fans and critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s on HBO Max.
I have a similar attachment to gladiator as you mentioned with the silence of the lambs - one night my mam just said “have you not seen this?” and then BAM. Magic.
my 10 would probably be (idk what order because it switches a lot for me):
1. Miseducation of Cameron Post
2. Another Country
3. This is England
4. the big short
5. good will hunting
6. Withnal and I (this was originally history boys but idk)
7. ladybird
8. gone girl
9. the fundamentals of caring
10. Colette
(11. I really wanted to put England is mine but I'm not sure if it fits on this list or not)
I realise a lot of these films are LGBTQ+ but its hard to relate to a story or film where you don't identify with anyone in it. Like I know some of these films may not be cinematic masterpieces but I just really think everyone should watch them. Also I know that you don't need to relate to a film in order to enjoy it but it does make it harder to empathise with characters if you already have a separation.
Watch “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” (2021). It’s four hours long, it’s fresh with fans and critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s on HBO Max..
"I believe that everyone will like When Harry Met Sally"
... oops
won't lie I felt a bit guilty that I kinda hated it
Mia Morvan me too! like it didn't live up to the hype
Having watched Sunshine last night, and adoring Annihilation, I now firmly believe that Alex Garland is one of the finest writer-directors working today. And I haven't even seen Ex Machina yet
Ooooooh you’re gonna love Ex Machina then
JACK! Go watch Big Time Adolescence, it seems like a regular coming of age story but it's so much more! Plus seeing Pete Davidson on screen is a joy
Watch “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” (2021). It’s four hours long, it’s fresh with fans and critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s on HBO Max.
your body coordination in this video is unmatched
Anyone who wants to watch Boyhood. Here’s my review. I’m a very nostalgic person, and this movie made me cry. Movies don’t make me cry. The only movie that’s made me cry other than this was Avengers: Endgame. This movie will make you nostalgiac, sad, happy, mad, this movie is an adventure. And that’s what I have to say!
Have you seen the original Ocean's 11? The way you talk about Soderbergh's makes it sound as though you haven't.
Just watched Tully following your recommendation! Absolutely loved it - so endearing and a such a palpable depiction of motherhood. Probably never would have stumbled across this otherwise so thank you haha !
Very pleased you enjoyed it :)
I haven't seen three identical strangers but it's not available in the USA
its wild, if you search for it on documentaryarea dot tv, you'll find it for free

speaking about Alex Garland, would be interested to know what you think about his new series, DEVS. I thought it was fantastic, and a lot of fun
I just finished watching the silence of the lambs and here it is
