booksmart is one of my favorite movies of all time. i don't know if it makes sense but it makes me feel very cozy inside? like i'm not completely alone in this world. it's one of these movies i wanna watch in a sleepover with my pal. i love it with all my heart.

One of my favourite movies of 2019 was Rocketman. I don't know why Bohemian Rhapsody was such a talked about movie and Rocketman wasn't. I'm a much bigger fan of Queen, than Elton, but Rhapsody seemed way too polished. And Rocketman on the other hand felt much more honest, which I truly love. And I adored Tarons performance, he was brilliant.

I'm so happy to see Benjamin up there! Simon Amstell manages to depict the emotional turmoil anxiety causes, whilst simultaneously making a film full of heart and humour. I was so glad to see a character like Benjamin, a bubbling mess, be at the very center of the film

Man I always look forward to these videos of yours Jack. I love hearing people talk so passionately about stuff, I'm honestly kinda envious. I wish I could find something that I feel this passionate about
Glad to see Marriage Story at the top! I still think about certain sequences from that film every day, I'm really rooting for it at the Oscars this year.
It feels so real... and since film is about acting out situations we should perceive as real... they did an amazing job. I felt... hurt. And almost.. powerless thinking this was all real. But it is real for many
I pretty much full agreed with this list, aside from not really "getting" Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. But I'm really glad you put Marriage Story first! I feel like that film has become fun/popular to criticize on Twitter, and I don't really understand why so many people hated it so viscerally. But it was my favorite film of the year, too!
I got introduced to you via the Kermodee On Film podcast and so glad to see you have a RUclips channel. Really enjoy your insight. I'll be subscribing 😊
Loved this list Jack, I’ve historically been quite bad at actually going to the cinema to watch a film but last year I finally changed that and now I can actually watch these lists with a genuine appreciation of most of the films. I was particularly surprised by Knives Out, I enjoyed it so so much. Keen to see honey boy and the peanut butter falcon!
I'm so excited to see Honey Boy on this list! I was honestly in awe in everything about this movie, the writing, the directing, the acting, and the complete willingness of Shia LaBeouf to put himself out there in that way.

January of every year, I make a list of movies I want to see. I go to your twitter (and sammy's, dean's, hazels's...all of you lot) and scan through almost an entire year's tweets looking for recommendations and reading reviews for films to add to my list. It's become a yearly ritual now. You lot never disappoint. Cheers xx
Your list is so similar to mine!!! I squealed with joy when you put Marriage Story at #1. There’s just something about it that really feels personal and hard-hitting.
i fell in love with 1917 when i saw it in the cinema but i haven’t rewatched it since because it made me feel so overwhelmed and emotional the first time and i don’t want to lose that
What a great list, agree with so many of these and didn't leave out any. Also benjamin! so glad to see that's included, I've been telling people about that beauty of a movie for so long!
I saw 1917 three times on the big screen and I personally got a lot out of each experience. First time - yes, it was completely immersive and suprising and heartbreaking and I came out immediately wanting to see it again. On the second watch I appreciated the first twenty minutes a lot more. Because I knew just how far the story had to go and how much happens and still Sam Mendez took the time he needed in the beginning. It doesn't feel rushed, it doesn't feel hectic. It feels just right. And even though I knew the story, most moments still got me. I had the same anxiety in the trench and the same heart-wrenching feeling at the barn and the same level of exhaustion in the water. Which makes the film even more impressive for me. I just love the flow and rythm of it so, so much. And yeah, the third time was basically just to show it to a friend, but I still loved every second and was finally ready to fully appreciate all the skill that had to go into it behind the scenes. Oh and Parasite .. first film in a long time where I actually caught myself sitting there with my mouth literally open. Credits came and I just sat there being like "What the? ... but then .. what.. why did.. fucking hell ... WHAT?" I absolutely loved it!
Every now and again I forget about film and how good it is but watching your videos about film and seeing your clear passion for it just bring back my own love and make me want to fully immerse myself in cinema and what it can do. Thank you
as usual, I now have a lot of movies to watch - also thank you for mentioning Booksmart because I feel like people have forgotten about it but I can see it being the sort of movie I rewatch multiple times a year from now on
Marriage Story is also my favorite movie from last year and one of my all time favs. I lost myself completely in the story and in the world that was being depicted. I cried so hard in the big fight scene, it was heart-wrenching yet oddly therapeutic. Just... yes to everything you said.
Oh man, that note to go into Parasite knowing nothing is exactly what happened to me today! I even watched trailers but didn't really get an inkling of the plot. Incredible. So good.
Heather Kennelly i was watching it wilt my sister and she insisted i don’t even google if it’s a thriller or watch any of the trailers... best decision ever to trust her
I know it's kind of late but since you mentioned it as one of your favourites I'd love to see you do a spoiler filled review/chat about Knives Out! It's probably the movie that got me back into the idea of going to the cinema (I've been a theatre/tv girl for years now but I'm falling in love with films again). I'd love to know what stuck out to you about it without worrying about spoiling the big plot points!
yes i agree with most of what was said, lovely video, but really i was expecting some joke about how you and dean look a lot like the main characters from 1917
I'm sure your thoughts on Parasite are insightful but I first heard of it when Demi Adejuigbe (who I think you know or at least met last time you were in LA?) tweeted about it and he said to go in knowing nothing. I have taken that very literally and other than the name and seeing the billboards advertising it in tube stations I've avoided all information about it while waiting for it to be released here. Will finally be able to see it next weekend.
I had a similar experience to your Benjamin experience. I went to see Captain America: The Winter Soldier at the theater in a mall where one of the scenes was shot, so it was surreal to see a spot that was just a few hundred yards away from me on the big screen.
So glad to finally see a Top 10 without JOKER on it. I love your list. I'd drop OUTIH in favor of LIGHTHOUSE or THE FAREWELL, but otherwise, you've highlighted some amazing movies.
Somehow I haven't seen most of these (what was I even doing in 2019! Well, writing a thesis, graduating, and finding new jobs I guess.) but I did see Booksmart and Knives Out and really enjoyed both! Have you listened to the podcast Creative Processing with Joseph Gordon-Levitt? It's great! Also, there's an episode with Rian Johnson about originality and imitation that I found to be super interesting. Highly recommend!
I loved 1917 as an aspiring actor/director in Highschool and a history buff. The story makes so much sense with the encorporation of other details like Runners. The fact that the story was inspired by Alfred Mendes, the grandfather of director, just gives it a more realistic approach to a war that was already so real.

Career defining performances from them both and such powerful emotion throughout it. I think you're right, the people I know who didn't like it very much described their experiences and it seems like they're detached from the emotion and truths of it. It so brilliantly contains the confusion of being human and falling in and out of love. Fantastic.
(of Uncut Gems) "It's a film that made me excited about films." I just watched Good Time on Netflix yesterday as some kind of a bizarre Safdie warm up prior to watching Uncut Gems and it made me feel the exact same way: It really got me excited about the potential of film as a medium and I honestly felt so grateful for the experience of watching something so quality, however I sadly couldn't get behind the massive excitement for Marriage Story. I watched that one about a month ago and whilst I enjoyed it, I couldn't quite connect quite as emotionally as I felt I *ought* to have. sorry.
