These days when i see a cabover big rig i dont take it for granted, no matter what brand it is
Very true. Hard to find many of them around anymore.
You see heaps in Australia, we make the kenworth k200 here, nice bit of work it id, plus we have volvo, scania, Mercedes benz and daf cabovers here, they're better for pulling b doubles and longer things, in order to fit into the vehicle envelope length here, because the length is limited to the total length, not the trailer.
Coming from the UK it's odd to see long nose trucks being called "conventional" the length restrictions (physical as much as legal!) mean they have always been rare, maybe only used in super heavy haulage or such specialities.
You still can find a lot of these in Mexico, kenworths and internationals in good shape and good shine
Got my start working on trucks at the
Peterbilt Motor Co in Newark Ca
Where I built hoods and cabs
The grill assy was hand fitted to the hood
They were hand filed for a perfect fit during the grill assembly before it went onto the hood
From Peterbilt I moved on to Mack Trucks in Hayward Ca for almost 10 year before doing an additional 27 years at a freightliner dealership as a mechanic
Working at the factory was like going to college before my final career
In the 90’s I went to the Freightliner factory in Portland Oregon for a class
It was like returning to your home after being away for a long time
The similarities were breath taking to me
The trucking industry was very educational and lucrative and allowed for me to retire with a generous pension never forgetting the chance to start at Peterbilt
If you're enjoying your generous pension, why did you post your resume?
The First Truck I bought was a '79 352. That little truck bought me a small fleet!
A neighbor has a really nice red and white peterbilt cabover and it’s amazing. Love to see it everyday on the way to school
Those were the glory days of trucking. Bring back the cabovers
Come to aus, we’ve got many mighty ones still being evolved and built by Kenworth over here!
Peterbuilt made some of the best looking cabovers around! You showed some of the best of them. Thanks! 🥰 I’ve always loved cabovers, even as a kid. I’ve driven Ford, GM, IH, Marmon cabovers. Great trucks! 🤩 I’m glad to have had the experience of being around and driving cabovers. Thanks to my dad and brothers for this! 😍 I currently own a 95 IH 9670 from Walmart.🤩 It’s a shame that they don’t make cabovers anymore. They sure had character and I sure do a double take when I see them on the road.😎 Thanks for sharing these beauties! 🥰 They all made some really good looking trucks back in the day. Really don’t know why they stopped making cabovers...not a good choice in my book.😒God bless America and all of our truckers! 🇺🇸
You would think Cabovers would still be popular in the Northeast urban areas. We often have guys not able to get to the buildings we work in because there isn't room to back up. It would make more sense.
Those were the best days...common sense and brains got you coast to coast... the only electronic device was the CB.
I'm guessing you drove with oil powerd headlight and hand driven wipers
352H is one of the best looking trucks of all time, just gorgeous.
352 was alway my favorite. Some complained they didn't care for it because "you had to sleep with the air cleaner". Never bothered me. Very cool interior and rode well with the 4 bag suspension.
Smoothies cab over I drove. Frankie retired truck driver
Good vidio
Really groovy! Love cabovers...wish they still made em...REAL cabovers, that is. Lawn service trucks don’t count!🥰
My grandfather had 72 coe and my parents had one 78 in 1979 coe and 1981 110 coe. Nice factory paint job
I love all of the old trucks!!!!!!
I've always loved cabovers. This video showed up in my recommended video to watch list and I'm glad I clicked on it. Very comprehensive and informative.
Thanks for watching!
I remember the 362 around town in the 90s
4:03 Hey Blondie...your smugging my chrome!!
Bring them back
had a cabover corn binder and kw.love them.
It's nice to see how many people are interested in this.
They still make 2 cab over models popular for refuse use. 320 and 520
Ain't no feeling like Petermobilin🤟🏾🤘🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾dats got dog right on tha money.
I loved these rigs, remember seeing them on the roads all the time in the 80s.
Im a simple man, I see COE I click
As I continue to tool around in my 1999 International 9800 which replaced my 1990 K-100,....never had a hood, never will.
I drove a 9870 in right hand drive, truckers always talk about being wedged in the corner driving them but I quite liked that truck.
I am starting a restoration on a ‘74 Pete cabover. I’ve done several conventionals but this is my first COE. I’m having hell figuring out the air assist steering. And help is great full!
Back when Burger King was owned by Pillsbury. Distron was the company that haul the supplies. My father drove for them from 69 to 86. They went from the Big I transtar to the KW to Peterbuilt.
That was at the time the Cadillac of trucks.
But, out of all of them .
He loved his B 61 Mack the best.
Walmart was the last company I remember running cabovers.
We imported a lot of them to Jamaica in the late 90s early 00s
Currently some companies still have cabover tractors pulling 57' vans.
I bought one in charlotte nc.
Bi-Mart in the PNW used day cab Freightliners up until just a few years ago.
1999 was the last year International built cabovers. Freightliner, KW, and Pete, were the last ones to build cabovers, I think . In the United States anyway
Peterbilt cabovers are super rare nowadays.
Your statement "..372 didn't sell as well as the previous 362" is inaccurate. 372 was not a 362 replacement, it was a separate model from 362. By the time the 372 was released, the sales of all cabovers across the industry were in a steep decline - the 372 was in a weird time warp - design and aerodynamics it was 30 years ahead of time but in the trucking market at the time it was 10 years too late.
352 is me and my dads favorite, best cabover made
I was lucky enough to start my Otr career in a 1986 362 110” back in ‘91. 400 bc Cummins 13 spd, she’d tote the mail .
Still miss my 362.
🤟😎👍🚛🚛🚛
Dont forget the 310 320 and now 520
Those things beat the kidneys out of a lot of drivers. They also sold a lot of laxatives. I never realized how bad they were until I bought my first long nose.
Those big rigs 🚛 are beautiful!!
Parker Ranch had a Pete 352 from the Pacemaker Class, Parker Ranch named her "Big Red" she started out as an open top Cattle Hauler in the Truck Trailer configuration. There were 2 of these 352's...the 1'st one was bought by Kahua Ranch wqhich my "Uncle Bobby Giltner" drove...Big Red came a few years later, my Daddy & Uncle Alika Bell drove it. Later Parker Ranch saw the veratility of the Tractor Trailer configuration & Big Red became a Tractor. Both Kahua Ranch & Parker Ranch had the 2 sticker models Big Red had the 5X4 non-progressive double overdrive set up. Had I known more Peterbilt history I would have gone in the business office & told them NOT to sell that truck!!!!!!!!! Plus, the Parker Ranch Truck Program started with my Daddy & Uncle Alika. This would make Big Red even more precious!!! I learned to drive 2 sticker's from my Daddy in Big Red. I was a pre-teen when Big Red rolled in to the Parker Ranch motor pool in 1968...Peterbilt took a 1967 model 351 and built it it up Special for Parker Ranch...the plaque inside stated: "This Peterbilt Custom Built For Parker Ranch." If I ever find Big Red I'm going to bring her home & find sponsorship to rebuild her to her former glory. The only modification would be a 3406 Cat @ 425hp or a 3408 Cat @ 450 & punch her out to 750hp. I drove a Peterbilt 359 with a 3406 @ 425 with a RTX14615 & 3.73:1 rears which could do 90mph in 10th gear with NO Overdrive, my former boss bought it used from "Don Eng Red Oval" in Anaheim Ca. The 748 & her sister's were bought brand new by Pan Pacific Construction & were used to haul contaminated soil from a shutdown wrecking yard in Anaheim to a Dumpsite somewhere in Death Valley. My boss & I talkjed a lot about the history of what we called "The Pan Pacific's." I paid close attention just as I did listening to my Daddy who talked about trucks all the time. I think I never talked about anything else, but hot rods & Peterbilt Trucks!!!! Of course as a truck driver I drove not only Pete's, but Kenworth's as well as R model Mack's & the IH Transtar Cornbinder's, as well as a couple White's. I loved my 1st Kenworth, a 1964 W925 that had a NH220 Cummins & the 4X4 Spicer set up. She was a hardworker & I nearly had a chance to buy her from my 1 boss "Alan Koike" for 5 grand. She didn't have power steering..but I didn't give a fuck...I just got out of Prison & had over 20" arms. LMAO!!! Something happened which I'm not allowed to sharing even though my Financier is dead. He was my 1st wife's Uncle. I am glad that PACCAR rescued Kenworth from Chapter 11 bankruptcy otherwise another Iconic truck would be gone forever!!!
Mahalo Nunui for sharing this most interesting documentary about Peterbilt Cabovers!!!
Aloha,
Chief
Loved the 372 .
Thanks much , subscribed. Drove only fifteen years cross country. I-40 & below.
What you'all call bubble noses, we used to cal "2 Story Pete's". Note that they had flat floors long before many other brands went that way.
Those 372 models, the front of them look like the front of a boat because they're not flat in front like how all the other makes & models of cabovers are. I've never seen any of those 372s around before but like you said they only produced them from 1988-93.
There's nothing but cab overs here in the UK. We have the odd T cab (Bonneted) Scania.
Conventional trucks here are mainly on specific jobs. The C O E is the norm due to overall length.
The difference was/is five foot on your trailer.
The only C O E yank trucks that I saw were Mack. These were on plant haulage.
We will be doing a whole video on CoEs and why they aren’t used here in the US. Thank you for reminding us.
Excellent video, great quality of image, thankfully an actual human voice, and above all this, beautiful cabovers. As I see it, Petes are better trucks than Kenworths. Nevertheless, I'm in love with Kenworth aerodyne cabovers and regular K-100. I share my opinion with Ed Wu, no matter what brand we're dealing with......a cabover is a cabover. Congrats for the great work.
Thanks Charlie for watching!
👍Great thanx from Germany!!!
Those early trucks no air ride no power steering no air conditioning no sleepers wow
I got an ad for a zero emission peterbilt cabover right before this video
Hi Jack, good stuff. I love the cab overs. Take care.
Cab overs look way better than conventionals!
Great entertainment!👍🏽👍🏽
These trucks at 3:50 resemble like the White and MAC trucks. So similar.
stared out driving in 1975 w/a 352 cummings powered 350 engine ...damn i miss that truck.no feelin like pete rmobilin for real..
Cummings?
SO YOU WANT TO MEET AT THE WOOD SHED TO WHIP UP?? PETTY PETTY I SAY!!
@@michaelsorrentino7409 Richard or Tom?
@@craniostomy.. not understanding your reply??
@@michaelsorrentino7409 it's Cummins! Ins, not ing.
I worked at the Denton plant up until last month and wr had a massive lay off. 😔
Hey! Peter Built That Truck! Great video,Thumbs Up!
Man I miss my double bunk 88 big cam lV a friend of mine said there's a cabover for sale on 78 in PA just saying
Loved it and learned something thank you 😊
I started driving 32 yrs ago the first truck was an 84 white frieghtliner that's when I started wearing a seat belt
That is some cool trucks
When I was going to truck driving school in Connecticut The first truck I drove was a old GMC cab over
Astro 95
Thanks for the great video 👍
I want to know more about the 372 model. Time to put these fingers to good use.
Good series: Nice to learn important about US-trucks: Conventional, COE, Pete, K-Whopper, Jimmy, Bulldog ... 07:24 right truck: a Mack Cruiseliner ? Greetings from South Germany
You can spot retire cabover driver by the highly customized hoveround scooters
I would do anything for a peterbilt to remake the 362
I've wanted a 372 for years, I'd love to put one to work. However they're bugger all to find in workable shape. I'm tempted to get myself an Argosy instead.
I know of one for sale in NJ 30 minutes outside Philadelphia
I literally obsessed with learned about trucks lol. These videos are amazing. Can you do the history of the white freightliner?
Yes history of white trucks coming soon. Thanks for watching 🙏
Jack's Chrome Shop of course! I wanna buy an old w900a for a snowman tribute truck one day, my dad drove for a long time. Lol
@@LobbsTrucking have to find an A model, with a V8 Cat and 8 in stacks. Awesome sound. A family friend had an 82 with an Aerodyne bunk. I used to help take care of it when I was a kid. (Washing, polishing and oil changes.)
Pan M8 that is too cool
Awesome video! Love the 352 and 362. Looks to me though that the "362E" at 6:20 is just a 362. The rig at 7:54, looks more like a 362E.
One thing about a cab over, you are the first person to the accident.
😂😂😂
Good video, but the Unilite cab was never offered in the 110" length, the longest being 86". The 110" cab debuted in 1974 in the Pacemaker lineup.
362♥️
Great video series! Only question is, what's the music?
Thanks guys.
Intro and outro music is Diesel Life by Bill Weaver Music. One of our favorites
@@jackschromeshop8296 thanks for letting me know guys.
Merry Christmas! 😊👍
that old truck in the duel is cool why didnt corgi make it in there classic range ?
I've been haunted by the gruesome crushed female cyclist under the Peterbilt 352 Day cab from Faces of Death (1978). I wondered what happened to that driver and unit; was it towed out of service until a coroner's inquest? Does anyone know what procedures and protocol after an accidental death with one of these inhuman devices?
Bug catchers!
Do you guys think you could do the history of the freightliner FLC120. And yes I meant FLC not FLD. Every time I type that into google it keeps thinking I meant FLD.
Random question.... what os the appeal of a mega long frame?
Great video!
Thank you very much!
Here in Europe they use cabovers only, still today.
True but I think it's because of your roads and how small the streets are in all of the very old cities and that's also why your tractors are mostly 6 wheelers
@@Notthisguyeither Yes, you get a better view on the road with a cabover truck, more practical on narrow streets/roads etc. I haven't seen 6 wheel tractors though. Sometimes 4 on one axle, if that's what you mean.
@@MrZdvy what I mean is the tractors only have 1 drive axle with 4 wheels and 1 steer axle with 2 wheels 6 total... most American road tractors have 2 drive axles with a total of 10 wheels. A common American 18 wheeler has 3 axles on the tractor and 2 on the trailer. A common European 18 wheeler has 2 axles on the tractor and 3 on the trailer
Tim Lepley ah, I get it👍
I drove a 1977 Pete, KW, International,.GMC, and FORD all cabovers. I don't care what anyone says, the GMC, and the Ford both had better heaters, and A/C system's than the Pete, or the KW. The International, was pretty much junk , just my opinion
The *real* Optimus Prime
What about peterbilt swan
The regular cab cabovers have a tiny body.
Gret
Which one of these is Optimus Prime?
None... optimus was a freightliner
The original optimus prime was a peterbilt 362
@@steverone7623 he was a freightliner fl86 dumbass.. get your facts straight... a quick Google search tells you smh
But now back then early 30s wasnt kenworth and peterbilt as on like brothers or cousins or then they split up and that's how kenworth came along
I almost bought a COE with a 300” wheelbase
Damn that is a stretched out CoE!
Wunderfull Trucks, but I am not understand the Peterbild Company.
Only with Cabovers have You in Europa a change.
In Europa are 95% all Trucks cabover!
Scania, Volvo, Mercedes, MAN, DAF, etc all make Cabovers.
Only Scania have in Europa a longhauler in program.
I have a peterbilt cabover. Ran when parked. V8 Detroit with 13 speed. Single axle air bag. Hmmmm.....
