We take you back through Freightliner's humble beginnings as Consolidated Freightways, to the rise and fall of their relationship with White Motor Company, all the way up through the present day! I was 23 when I bought my first truck. A 1986 Freightliner Cabover with a little 310 Cat, 9 speed transmission on spring ride. I paid 7k for it in 1992. A year later, I bought a 1990 Freightliner cabover with a 430 Detroit Series 60, 12.7 liter. 13 speed transmission on air ride and a 110" cab. I paid 23k for it and paid it off in 18 months. I was pulling a 1988 Utility reefer trailer with a brand new, 1994 Carrier unit that I put on it, X-country hauling produce. California to Florida mostly. My tomato backhaul from Ruskin, Florida went away immediately after Clinton signed the NAFTA act. I'm no longer an Owner-Operator, but I still drive trucks locally in the LA area for a National grocery distributor. I still miss my old Freightshakers though...
NAFTA was a knife in the back of the American worker. No Republican President would ever have gotten NAFTA through congress.
The late 80's FLC conventionals were the prettiest trucks Freightliner ever made!

I liked when they had family day at freightliner.
I like the round headlight. They seemed to be built a little wonkey in my opinion.

It's crazy that these trucks look better than some of new car models of 23/24/25
The first truck I drove was a white 1996 FLD120 at truck school. It had a CAT C15 and a 10-speed Rockwell transmission. I miss that truck. That was 12 years ago; tonight, I'm in the sleeper of a 2020 Cassie. It is a major improvement over the previous Cassie, but I say without apology that Freightliner sold out to make more money; and now they cater to fleets as volume sellers. The new Coronado is about the closest thing to the legendary Classic XL, but it falls short. Sure the Classic XL didn't "get the girls" like KW and Pete do, but independent contractors still swear by them. A Cat 3406 & 18 speed transmission, a Texas bumper, and especially the 84" "Big Daddy" sleeper is my dream truck!
I drove mostly freight’s in my career so far! I love freighshakers I drove Coronado glider kits, and century’s and cascadias and even now my work truck is a Columbia sleeper truck

I wish you would do more in the history series. It's not only interesting but verry entertaining to learn and see history at the same time. I'm 62 years old but I still like to learn new things. Please keep it going
Hope they do some on like Autocar, White maybe even Hayes or Pacific...some nameplates that either dont exist anymore or just aren't as common

My uncle was a Freightliner driver in US.
My best wishes to Freightliner and all those who carry Hopes and freights from coast to coast. Truck drivers are the actual Soldiers of country's economy. They deserve respect and love.

Freightliner, Big Rigs is in my top #2 of 5 favorite of all-time ever... 1987 FLD, Classic XL, FLC-Series, Argosy... Beautiful trucks ever made
Huge fan of the Freightliner FLC!
As a company driver I ran alot of Freightliner/ Cummins I really liked them and didn't have a problem keeping up with the big dogs
From 2mins 25 to 2min 45 The first ''Dromedary cabs'' whatever that means. The only way to create space without increasing length. Love the Western Star at 6mins 3sec. Interesting short truck film. Good upload. Cheers from Australia
The Argosy trucks were nice looking cabovers... I didn’t know that they had flat floors though. How cool is that! Ford made them in the smaller cabovers as well. The Cascadias are sharp, too. I like all the aerodynamics...but they need to make trucks that don’t look like each other. I’m beginning to wonder if they’re just copying ideas from each other. You can’t tell some of the trucks apart anymore. 🧐Good stuff...I learned something new today.🤩

After 48 years of long haul driving, I have to say that the new Freighliners are the most sophisticated modern trucks on the road. My Columbia double bunk even had air ride on the front steering. One day I was driving down the road and the left front steer air bag blew up. It scared the crap out of me, and I limped it home to the shop. When they replaced it, we once again had a Cadillac smooth ride. Alas these days I am stuck in a Peterbilt 379 that rides like a brick.

Freightliner also acquired Thomas Built School Bus and about the same time the M2 came out, the Saf-T-Liner C2 debuted.
My step father worked at White Freightliner in Burnaby British Columbia Canada in the 70s
The Western Star was also built in B.C.
I'd say this company has had an incredible lucrative life so far.
very sad they did away with the CabOver, they did design a sexy cab and it was their beginning too... sigh do love CabOvers ;)
I believe you can still buy a Argosy in the states as a glider.
@@SOU6900 if you were still allowed to own glider but can still buy a used Argosy... but maybe KW will bring them back :)
when it comes to freightliner trucks, im a Columbia guy
As a bit of more history, the reason CF began building their own trucks was that many of the others available weren't suited for the mountains of the western US.
Later on they had their own airline also. I worked at Dynair at Phoenix Sky Harbor airport when CF was going thru financial problems & we were storing 3 of their 727 cargo planes.
After emerging from bankruptcy they were renamed Conway,
just a contraction of
Consolidated Freightways.

This was great, and really informative. Argosy still sells very well here in the used market, very reliable on our two trailer 34ton applications. Daewoo took over the Cummings engine and most Argosy fans have followed that way (believe it or not)
What is a Cummings engine? Never heard of those. Cat, Detroit, Pac car, Cummins, yes. Never heard of Cummings though
i spent many an hour behind the wheel of an 1983 flc. no major complains other than the aluminum drivers door would get metal fatige & crack by the hinge, even with a well lubricated hinge.
Oh my God! At 12:00 mentioning the sd series in construction they show a clip of border paving trucks! I work there and we only run freightliners! My truck is a 2014 114sd!

Been a Freightliner junkie since mu dad first started driving trucks back in the late 90s or early 2000s. However the current ones just don't have the same appeal as that FLC(?) That my old man cut his teeth on with Reliable Tanklines. On a side note I need to learn how to spot the difference between the FLC and FLD trucks. Same for the FLT, FLA and FLB model cabovers.
The 104" Vanliner came out in 1968 and was the first double bunk cabover. Also, the 100,000th truck was not a Powerliner.

Could you guys make a trucking history video. I.e. Pre-deregulation (how it was), and post de-regulation up til now. I.e. How people slept back then what they did to help out each other, etc. and now. Thanks
Yes we are planning a new series now on the history behind trucking including: History of the DOT, History of the interstate road system, and history of the OTR truck. Stay tuned.
They'll always be immortalized through Generation 1 Optimus Prime and Terminator 2.

Its funny how I see in some of the comments where dude's be saying freightliner makes ugy/fugly this n that trucks when in I do think they make the most beautiful trucks ever along with some models of Internationals and a few kenworths.
The raised sleeper roof FLD was a charm to me likewise the Colombia not to mention em sweet Century-ies and now the Cascadia. %100 beauty.
And freightliner is one of the top brands and most common trucks in Jamaica.
Great video, love it but, I wanna know why they stopped making the Freightliner Century and Columbia they were good strong trucks
I believe the Columbia replaced the Century, and the Cascadia replaced the Columbia
after the end of the Classic XL -- Freightliner just makes fugly girly trucks - I would rather push my 379 than drive a Cascadia
The Coronado doesn't look so bad. Though for a rig that's supposed to have a traditional look to it they should have put the classic breather cans on it. The Argosy trucks don't look half bad either in my oppinion. The New Cascadias however are fugly as hell to me.
I agree, but the Coronado lineup after 2014 is definetly not a bad rig. I pull oversized loads for a roof truss company, with both a day cab Coronado and day cab 379 and the visibility of the FL is hard to beat. The old fashioned air cans on the Pete make the cab much narrower, and Pete has the shittiest mirrors I’ve seen on any truck.
But for pulling vans or grain, can’t beat a long nose Pete

When freight liner started only built trucks for consolidated freight government said you have sell your trucks to the public to FL had no dealer ships so white sold them at ther dealerships thus for a time all trucks carried the logo white freight liner

The old plant on Swan Island in Portland (1:42). The company couldn't wait to get out of the half-cab (4:18) business. It was never a good seller.

My dad had a 60's White Freightliner with a 8v92 Detroit, I think. Unfortunately, he put it in a ditch on a back road outside of Atlanta.

Never liked the styling of the first FLD's the FLD classic is a different story tho
I loved it to no end! Style for me was " oh, good enough " but working on an FLD was just cheap, easy, and could be done very quickly! There was so many after market stuff too.

Would rather drive a Pete that pulled dump trailers with 460,000mi than a 'shaker' with 460mi. Especially with all that new, unproven, high technology, insurance company crap they hang on those poor trucks nowadays. they may have been good trucks in the beginning, but they sure are cheap pieces of crap now.

A turboshaft engine. It drove a drive train just like a diesel engine does.

At one time they may have been a good truck but now they are junk liners. Made of nothing but plastic.
