The W990 is only controversial cause people choose to make it that way. There's plenty of room in the market for both of these trucks. It's more like what's your flavor and preference. Some are gonna like the traditional truck and some are gonna like a more modern truck. It's really not that big of a deal, but it is what it is. Great video!

Wayne Norbrey, Jr some people just find it ugly because it’s not what they’re used to seeing in a square hood conventional cab truck. And smart move for KW to bring it out along side the W900 so people will get used to its looks. The W900 is going away due to government mandates for fuel economy... no more external air breathers as of 2025 I believe.

    • @waynenorbreyjr9371

      @@chevyon37s
Which is why Mike Dozier had said that their preparing for the future. Your right, it was a smart move, and people make say it's ugly and all, but in all actuality it's not that bad of a looking truck. (My opinion of course) I've liked it from when I 1st got word of it. If you can't have the external air cleaners than this is to me the next best option. The truck goes right along with the 2.1meter cab family of trucks aka the new generation of Kenworth trucks T680 and T880. I've had a chance to see one or quite a few back in March at MATS and after seeing it in person it's definitely one of my favorites.

I drove one of the first T-600s. KW brought two of them to Terrain Tamers, Inc. to try out and we used them to haul veneer on 40'/20' sets from Sun Stud in Roseburg, OR to the coast. Within a couple of years the entire chip truck fleet converted to T-600s, but we still had the 379 Peter Elite Fleet OTR trucks. They had sleepers and we kept them until they brought us two short wheel base ones that we had ordered. What a treat with the increased visibility and maneuverability.

I never saw a truck called W900A until the B model came out in ‘82 and we didn’t know what to call the old ones.
The wide nose came out in 1963 in front of the tiny square door cab. The next year, 1964 introduced the cab with the bulkhead door. That cab had a sharp edge on the dashboard above the clutch that was a shin killer. Corrected in the next year model. That cab had a great run from 64 to 82. I think it was 1972 when door handles went low. That’s the same year Peterbilt finally figured out that a bulkhead type door would stop their cabs from cracking out in the corners. Duh. KW low handle doors were the same size and we retro fit some cabs to the low handle. Great video but some dates are off a bit.

I love Kenworth and all of its Rigs but if I could only pick one Rig out of their lineup to be my all time favorite it would have to be the Kenworth W900L model! Kenworth along with their brother company Peterbilt, both a part of Paccar Motors are two of my all time favorite truck manufacturing companies along with Mack, Freightliner, International, Western Star, and the old Autocar. I'm very pleased that the Kenworth W900 Rig was in the movie "Smokey and the Bandit", which is an all time favorite movie of mine too! It was my favorite vehicle in the movie, even more so than the Pontiac Trans Am! I just wish the "Smokey and the Bandit 2" squel would have had the Peterbilt 379 as the Rig component to the team. There was a Peterbilt in the 3rd movie but it was parked in the yard and not used. The Kenworth W900 on the first one was the star vehicle to me with that iconic trailer! Awesome history video! Thanks for your time making these! I'll be watching the Kenworth W900 episode and Peterbilt History next!! 🇺🇸🚛

New government standards for 2025 outlaw external air breathers on road tractors, so they’ll be gone, thus the introduction of the W990 smart move to bring it out early and get people used to seeing them.

As an owner of 7different W900a's I think Kenworth should not have placed the W990 in the 900 class. The cascadia fruitliner looking thing belongs in its own category. Don't ask me where but definitely not in the W900 series!

Kenworth does their trucks in certain classes; series or models for various reasons so it makes sense for the W990 to be in the W line. I mean look at the history of how they've done things. The W line obviously represents the long straight hood and that's exactly what the W990 is, which is why it's the W990.

Not to mention Kenworth been in the game longer than Peterbilt, but that doesn't matter. Both companies produce the best trucks on the market.

Many of these trucks were painted by a serial murderer named Gary Ridgway.
