Great video m8 I've just moved to Frinton and found your videos on this one are those beach huts between Frinton and walton or are they near the naze end ? Thanks Steve .
It made my day discovering that you were back and seemingly all right. Like everyone else who enjoyed watching your “maritime” foraging, I supposed the worst and it saddened me. So old boy, I again look forward to seeing and hearing about your adventures. Whelks... years ago at Brighton front, as a kid, I used to love going to the seaside shell fish stalls. For some reason I loved eating cockles. My mum would always turn her nose up at whelks saying they were rubbery and very chewy so I never tried them. Today, all secrets were revealed by you about the whelk and I thank you. Guess I wasn’t missing much. One more thing, I recently read that years ago, oysters were very cheap and plentiful and were used by the poor to extend meat. My gran, a wonderful English(London) cook, would occasionally make a steak and oyster pie from Colchester oysters that I brought back from my aunt who lived there. I thought the pie was luxurious not realizing it was a poor person’s food. Anyway, glad you are back. Cheers, Colin.
Cheers Colin, glad to be back sir! I've heard about the steak & oyster pie in the past, I think I have a recipe in an old Essex cookbook somewhere, I'll have to dig it out as this sounds like a future project to me! As for the whelks I think I may have done them an injustice by not cooking them in sea water like the oysters so I'm not done with them just yet!! All the best...Paul.
live let liv the samphire video is long gone unfortunately, when I deleted my channel them old ones went forever, I will just have to make it again but I'll have to wait until next summer!!
Les thanks, I didn't get back there, you need a really low spring tide for them to be exposed there & it's not always possible to be there at that exact time but I will definitely re-visit this in the future at some point though. Incidentally these clay ledges are more readily exposed further up the coastline around the Naze area.
Eimars Edge sorry for the late reply but I've just got back from my hols but yes I do find a lot of beadlet anemones & Sagartia troglodytes (I think) I'm not an anemone expert, might be a video for the future, thanks!
Douglas I'm not aware of many squid being caught in Essex but you can rest assured knowing that if I find out where they are to be had in Essex, I will be straight on it!! Otherwise I will have to travel further afield!!
Yeah i knew Pete ledges... never liked him... lol. Shame about all those oysters being ripped up. Never tried them myself. Would like to go for a forage and eat myself..
unfortunately its normally the eastern europeans that take everything in sight, ive seen it here in basildon, i know of a couple of good walnut trees plus apple and plum trees that get stripped bare even before ripe, caught 4 polish guys last year, had a word but made no difference, if its free they take the lot
Viking Adventurer it's the ancient flag of Essex, they are called seaxes, they was weapons used by the Anglo Saxons, they also appear in the flag of Middlesex
