I have a rust free GQ. I'm paranoid about rust so I peeled the roof lining back at each door and stuck a cavity wax wand into the gap between the outer skin and the roof supports and flooded it. The cavity wax can flow down to where the roof is pinch welded along the gutter. There were actually a few spots I noticed where the cavity wax made it through tiny cracks in the sealant in the gutter and could be seen from the outside. If the cavity wax can get out then water can get in, and it will just sit between those two sandwiched sheets. I think applying cavity wax to an old vehicle is really worthwhile.
Yep, best shit on the plannet! This will be getting a full dose of cavity wax 👌
100% comp truck build
Bro! If I could afford it I would 🌚
Sounds like a man needs a sponsor with deep pockets to make our dreams come true.
parts commonality is one of the best things about these things, can easily bolt gu upgraded parts on a gq
Got my 1989 gq from an auction for around this price with under 200,000kms td42 silvertop grandpa spec with some of the roof rusted but cut and sanded those bits, panel beat copper to fill the spaces pop ribbet them in, aluzinc rolled along sides, front and back, corners with fibre glass, bog over that to smooth the shape and strengthed the gutter with angled aluzinc on top of them, roof has cost me $350. Old man who passed away owned it, he'd always serviced it so its mint as.
WoW amazing patrol i hope to see a lot off video,s with this patrol old school rules 💪👍💪 and i hope you keep this one i have also 2patrols and i watch Every time with my son who has avt shirt off your flatbed patrol greetings from Belgium europe 👍💪👍💪👍
Some helpful info for a TD42/GQ:
Keeping her cool:
- Factory radiator & factory thermostat, either 76c or 82c, there's some debate between the two, but generally this won't be the cause of any major overheating.
- Factory fan is okay if viscous hub is good. UFI fan is a good option and has helped a fair few reduce temps.
- Make sure all the foam/rubber seals around the radiator are in place, can use rubber stuff from bunnings as a cheap option
- Aswell as an air dam, extended depending upon your lift height. can use a metal fabbed sheet, or thick rubber from local rubber shop.
- Hard to beat good maitenance, make sure all your hoses are good, nice clean coolant, good expansion tank etc. It's the little things or 30 year old bits of brittle plastic that will let go somewhere random and leave you half stranded.
Servicing:
- Some service every 5000, some every 10,000. I would say it depends on your driving, if you're doing a lot of cold starts or smaller trips, the oil should be replaced sooner. I usually change at 7000kms.
- Valve/tappet adjustments should be done hot. You can do them cold and it will 'work'. However it is always best to do this after the engine is warm. basically it's a little bit more accurate and 'cold' measurments can vary, whereas if it's at operating temp, it's relatively consistent when adjusting. But it's a 30 year old diesel so who really cares tbh. either way is better than nothing.
- Not really 'servicing' but if you know you're going to be doing big hard obstacles with big tyres (37's) AND driving it hard. I would bite the bullet and swap to GU diffs. Otherwise it's a matter of time until you break the GQ CV's. That being said, smart & mechanically sympathetic driving with 35's and even 37's is fine on GQ Axles.
Ideas for this build:
- Would be cool to see you work through each item and what it takes to service and restore an old vehicle like this. e.g. All the fluids, servicable items and what it cost to get it to a nice running state.
- From there it would be nice to see a cool interior build. There's so many videos of GQ's getting bashed offroad with big tyres etc, kinda been done to death (although i'd still watch that). Something like sleeping inside, or even a panel van build?? Maybe even attempting a roof conversion like with a troopy. I have no idea if that's ever been done on a GQ but would be awesome to see if it's even possible.
- See how capable you can make it on a budget. Just a nice 2 inch lift with 35's (Low and wide), would be nice to see. Use normal coils, with regular shocks (Like a cheaper superior kit). Most people don't have 6-8k to drop on a remote res 4 inch hyperflex kit.
Final build could end up being a low and wide capable GQ with 35's, front locker, really unique interior build, all on a relative budget. Then maybe at the end you could do a raffle system with subscribers to win it. Then that could fund the next project.
Or just chop the guards, whack on 37's and flog it in the glasshouse ;)
Keen for this build, best of luck!
Dual Cab
Gqs definitely have sunroofs my shorty has one but it doesn’t have the slide out blank piece its just a pop up one
Good buy. Be keen to the full service, and prep/install of snail, intercooler, air box and snorkel
Stretch chassis.
Alloy canopy.
Dual cab.
King shocks, airride.
Longarms.
UFI go fast bits.
Walker evans for retro look.
Recaro expert seats.
Roof sliders
Hey mate not all gqs rust on the roof, I've had roof racks on for 12 years and no rust. Think it may have had factory rust protection, there is a sticky residual inside the doors and where the jack goes. Be very interesting if yours has the same
I just bought my gq couple weeks ago, $7500, 169,000 k's td42 silver top. zero rust been sitting for around 10 years:)
Hey mate looking to buy one also tryna keep under $10k where’s best spots to look cause I’ve been giving market place and Gumtree and big rundown and I cannot seem to find any?
Hey mate I looked into the sunroof thing abit and apparently there was like half a dozen year models where Nissan had factory sunroofs on the GQ patrols, so more than likely it is factory mate.
Awesome! Thanks heaps for looking that up! Must be pretty rare as I’ve never seen one! 🤘
Love any Patrol content. Should be fun to watch.
Got mine for $6k, na td42 wagon, clean as, perfectly running, only rust is in the rear left quarter and its only the size of a 20c piece. Got at 460km 6months ago, now got it at 492km
You've done well here mate, for a lit of people they'd be a bit scared but you can see through that & use your experience to make this thing sing. Well played! 👏💪
She’s a diamond in the rough 🥵
DERKS HIGH FLOW WATER PUMP MATE!!! Best thing for a TD. Will never overheat after that
Thanks bro! Will grab one! 🤘
good to see there are still cheap td42s out there, i got mine just b4 covid hit. was up on facebook for 18 minutes when i got told about it, messaged the guy and we settled on 2900 had to drive 4hrs each way to get it. 3 yrs later its still in the driveway :D
Honestly if I was you I’d be turning it into a super capable off roader because you’ve already got a tourer in the gu. Apart from that great buy and looking forward to seeing what happens with it!
Got yourself such a good buy at a bargain price, can’t wait for the build and see what you do to her. Should turn her into an absolute beast since you’ve already got a tourer.
The Nissan patrol gqs didnt come with sun roof but the ford mavs were a bit more classy and sun roof was an option
I love watching old td patrols get built to pretty much new. And as a rookie with a 1993 td42 patrol. watching stuff like this helps out a lot. Great Vids Mate 💪
I paid $350 for a SWB with td42.
Stripped it, panel and paint. All new glass and seals, new suspension,35s all sorts
The wheels look so good for that model. As it was a squared off design..
Y60 / Y61 / lc 80 / lc100 are the best cheap off road cars very strong durable and if you don’t want in-line 6 replace it with 6.0 LS and now you create a beast great engine with great gearing A/T or M/T and strong solid axles
Budget rock crawler, weldies, home made beadlocks stuff like that. Like real budget diy stuff.
The problem with na td42 silver tops is everyone put oversized turbos on and ground up the fuel pin just not to mention it’s only a 10mm pump that isn’t boost compensated thus in turn blowing the bottom end out of it
Barra swap would be cool af. Great content for the channel no.5
Make the GQ at reliable tourer to prove its reliability
Thanks
Sunroofs came factory from the Safari spec 24 volt common in New Zealand.
Why did I get a pimp my ride vibe when you were washing it 😂
Keep the GU for touring and GQ for tough tracks 💪
Awesome cant wait to see more on this project ahead. Keep up the great craftsmanship an hard work. Fab On. Weld On. Keep Making. God Bless,
Want to see more of 4jj patrol
PLEASE!
💪yessssssssss. Go the GQ! What a buy! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
If you are looking to turbo or increase power output, this is the order:
Black top Turbo > Silver top > Black top NA
In the end, it is high EGT that will cause failures. The black top turbo has the thickest gudgeon pins along with galleries in the pistons for the oil squirters to hit. While almost all Silvertops and blacktops have oil squirters, only the turbo pistons have the galleries. This keeps the pistons cool at high EGTs. As neither the Silvertop or blacktop NA have turbo pistons, the silvertop tends to outlive the blacktop NA because it has thicker pistons, thus it handles short peaks of high EGTs better than the lighter blacktop NA pistons.
With all that said, if you do not intend on putting high boost (12+ PSI) through your TD42, and keep it under 550c EGTs, the Blacktop is a great motor thanks to its lighter pistons and thicker gudgeon. Silvertop is great for up to about 200hp, at which point you are better off with the black top turbo as it has the piston cooing to handle the heat, and a thicker crank to handle higher power safely.
All of these variants suffer from heat issues due to the poorly designed coolant channels in the head, but is well maintained (and don't have the common precomp chamber cracks) they are usually "good enough" unless you want to pull a van up hill at 110kmph when its 45c outside...
Lastly, good think about silvertop means you don't have the weak 5th gear in the transmission, that'll save you some coin.
Disclaimer: This is all my opinion, built from misery and joy in my own garage. Do what you will with this info, I don't care :)
Great info mate! Appreciate it a lot 👌
The black top turbo and black top N/A have 28mm gudgeon pins while the silver top has 30mm gudgeon pins. The black top turbo is the pick of them though for sure.
GQ’s did come with sunroofs mainly the SWB models but there are factory sunroofs wagons as well they’re just super rare
Ooft maybe it is factory!
My swb has a factory sun roof
Would love a video on how to fix clear-coat peal. Got a bargain!!👌🏻
I legit just picked up a gq site unseen 200ks away td42 tight as small surface rust $1800 drove it home on a permit!
Please do something retro and clean, there's not enough GQs left anymore and even less left in a beautiful way that people can admire.
Totally agree, love the old school tuff look, mine even has chrome rims 😍
I have got the same car but a Ute i love it can’t wait to see what happens with this thing
Keen to see where you take this
budget comp truck spec. build everything on the cheap then do the hardest tracks possible in it
3 grand for a good td42 is ridiculous. You basically stole that. Good on you mate!
Two months ago I bought a factory paint 97 y60 with a tb48 engine gear diff every thing is from a 2022 super safari patrol for 4500$ in Kuwait
Sick so glad you bought a another gq, my old mavrick had a factory sunroof looked similar to yours and leaked like no tomorrow, I think you should make it big set it up for the hard stuff it’ll do it better then your gu and won’t feel as bad when you cave it in
Thank god you picked one of these.
It’s funny how we can spend a ton of money making a clean rig then be so excited to clean up a shitta haha solid buy though 👌🏼 I reckon a nice tidy up and full bar work, twin locked and make a nice “extreme” 4x4
paint those wheels up satin black and bam your done there. save $$$$. use front runnernonnoriginal door cards and will be sweet.
please go top mount with a 79 scoop, looks so clean IMO on the old wagos
Yea mate I reckon make a glass house mountains rig and fully soup it up🤙🤙
Would be sick! 🤘
Can’t wait for the build mate, love a cheap gq
If repaint do a nice green emerald colour that has glitter
Show us how to make a cheap rig once we upgrade our main 4wd to a point that we don't want to damage it anymore. Like you have already done with the wheels take all the parts you have lying around from the GU build and see what fits on the GQ. You can save money that way and might look cool. The wheels suit it so far.
Great idea! Thanks mate!!
@@RoamLyfe No worries. Yeah anyone can get an older model of their current 4wd and some parts can fit. Less parts taking up space in the shed and you can always take parts back off the GQif needed.
Nothing wrong with using a wooden bonnet prop my 80 has one cheers legends ☺️
this makes want to get a gq now
I like the old wheel!
Got my 96 gq end of last year completely dead stock, original wheels the lot, 0 rust not a dint in it, pain a fuck load more tho 😂
Still a great find without rust! I’ve battled enough of it 😆
Overheating? They’re known to be big n bulky so try put a thermo fan on too but also that means you have to watch river crossing with the fan blades
Can’t beat my mate he bought an old mq patrol for $1500 that still runs and drives and I had to drive the thing back to his grandparents place
What a mint looking rig mate. I can’t wait to see what you do to it next time
I saw a tb42 with a sunroof on Carsales
Those 90’s alloys are mad, polish them up. Way cooler than any shiny Chinese wheel
keen mate 😊
Love it man, just a clean fun build! and it looks like an amazing build! GLASSY GLASSY GLASSY!
Gday, that’s a bargain every day of the week, can’t go wrong, shit hot, cheers
Dt79a thermostat reset tappets tune pump add turbo mild boost send it 💪🏽

Thanks bro!
gandpa spec build, tidy up and period correct mods with a bit more power.
Sick buy bro. Keep the old school cool Indys. They were sh1t hot in the day. Get them polished. You'll be glad y'all did. Sensational mint based channel cuz. Cheers
Definitely do glassy rig
Wicked buy and will be awesome project, got a swb GQ here in nz.
Quick question what is the cleaner ya use in your foam gun ? Looks like it works awesome.
Anyway keep up the good work dude 👌👍
Do you have any videos of your camping trailer and it's set up. It looks mint.
U should defs make it a a street car, since u have the GU for tracks🎉
New name bucket the gq 😂
Can't wait to see the next mods on this great beast.
Hey mate I love the TD42 mate she’s looking good but she will be looking even better with some modifications bro.
So keen to get things pumping on it 🎉
Hell yes mate
Super mint wagon build
Cheers Nathan!
flex king!!!
100 % its amazing
I already know this thing will be sick
What’s happened to terry the triton?
All in all you got a bloody steel. Looks the goods any ways 👍🏽.
Throw a magnet over the roof to ensure there is no bog
TD42 Patrol!! You had me at T….. let’s go…
😆😆😆
Verygood car and strong
That song is umm. Super good 😵💫
pre sunroof was an option
The oil cooler corrodes out and people with no idea think they done a head new radiator and flush a must
True! Something to look out for 🤘
@@RoamLyfe got x2 gq 1988 wagons td4.2 diesels one 180000km for 900$ oil cooler corrosion problem was ready to go to tip
Other 125000km for $750 bench seats 😀rear brakes and rear diff bearings where gone from putting boat in water
Now they where bargains you don’t find everyday 👍🍻
Do a dual cab chop
Legenddd, looks good so far
Thanks bro!
Got a pair of gq seats near Hervey Bay cheap
Awesome!
Seen a fair few shortys with a sunroof so might be factory
exact same colour and model one as my grandads😂
Do an engine swap to a 6bt Cummins
R U F Kidding $3000 , that's like winning the lottery . Looks good just like that , I think you should do a run in it before you start to much of the build.
Lovin the video turn over rate! Keep up the content moit
Thanks legend!
I just put a set of pacemaker extractors and manta 2.5 on my n/a silver top and it’s heaps better , I can do 740kms on standard 90litre tank
Holy shit that’s impressive!
I have a hunch about the sun roof I have a Nissan mistral which also goes by the name Ford maverick I do believe some gq were also under Ford maverick as well so it could very well be that the maverick comes with factory sun roof
37’s no lift, long shocks, big droop, keep it low and wide. Twin auto lockers
Sunny Coast Customs over here 😅 sweet job
Not another bloody Datsun!!!!
Could not pass it up 😆
