It actually is a bad scene. So much wasted potantial. Just imagine Luke striking down Vader or more than that even kill of Palpatine. That would have been cool. Or let an X-Wing Hyperspaceram a Super Star Destroyer. Man that would have been so cool. Or what about Luke lifting up the whole Echo Base with no training and trhowing it on the imperial troops to help the rebels escape. That movie could´ve been so cool written by Rian.
@@lightsaberproductions8592 or Luke could learn how to fly and shoot lasers out of his eyes and shoot the base from orbit. That would be so coooool. And at the end it would turn up he was a strong independent woman this whole time who had a sex change.
@@85LARGE Awesome! We should write the next Star Wars movie together. It´s going to be the best movie ever. And just imagine how cool it would´ve been to see Luke stop Vader sacrificing himself for his son. He would just force push him away from Palpatine the very moment he tries to grab him. I allready came up with an epochal script for that scene! He could say to Vader, before they bove get killed of by Palpatine, "That´s how we are winning, not destroying what we hate, but saving what we love." And then he should kiss Vader. Why Lucas didn´t came up with such an awesome ending? Well luckily Disney is there to fix this madness from the Original Trilogie.
Remember how the Jedi were such a major power for the status quo (which most consider "good") that Palpatine had to orchestrate a decade and a half of war conspiracy to remove them from his rise to power?
When George Lucas sold Star Wars to Disney, he didn't sell them everything. He still retains the rights to the OT movies and characters. Also, when Disney uses an OT character in one of its movies, they have to pay George a 25% royalty for doing that. THIS is the reason why Disney is killing off all the OT characters: they don't want to give George his cut of the profits. I think the order to kill off every OT character came straight from the top. Rian Johnson didn't kill Luke on his own but he certainly took a lot of glee in carrying out the order to do it.
I actually know where Rian was coming from with that idea, bc by the time of the prequels, the Jedi Order had lost its way so much with all of it's doctrines and dogma's and they couldn't even figure out that their own chancellor of the republic was not only a sith lord, but THE sith lord. They were so loyally blind to the republic that they couldn't possibly make that connection, even when dooku told them about. Also, they had countless opportunities to prevent order 66, with them even discovering the inhibitor chips in the clones. Another thing is that they are equally, if not more responsible for Anakin's turn to the dark side than Sidious himself was. They stole children from families without them having any say about it, that's it hipity hopity your child is our property. The clone wars turned keepers of peace in soldiers and generals in a war that they should've sensed was orchestrated, were taught to act without feelings and emotion (things that no being can effectively do) which ended up being a rule that almost all jedi broke. I mean just look at Qui Gon, he's the perfect example of a true Jedi and what a Jedi should strive to be, whereas Mace Windu essentially represents what Jedi have become. But I do think Rian fucked up in essentially make Luke throw away the chance to bring back the Jedi to what it once was.
"Can you imagine what people would've said about Luke getting his ass handed to him by Darth Vader" Here's what I say, it makes perfect sense because it was DARTH VADER! And Darth Vader was a very strong, established character by the climax of TESB. He wasn't a bland Mary-Sue who came out of nowhere with mysterious, unearned superpowers. And Luke was only part of the way through his character arc and had lessons to learn. Imagine having to explain this to a professional filmmaker.
And consider he had 2 Jedi masters telling him he's not ready. It's almost like wisdom proved true and youthful arrogance and desperation led to disaster. Go figure!
Holden Mcgroine Wasn’t that the point the whole time? Subverting the plot? Oh wait, no. Expectations. My bad. But haven’t the plot and expectations evolved into the same thing now...somehow? For example, I always thought the Force was male (maybe because I’m a male and I thought the Force was like practically every country until around like the mid-sixties for some and many countries currently and I thought the Force had a gender to begin with and also thought a description of a gender could be one syllable...my bad). But nope! The Force is female and boy do I feel like a jackass. For the real Star Wars fans both the plot and expectations have been deliberately subverted, ignored and shit on. Some would say “Disneyfied”. They should make a special edition of the Matrix Reloaded but the whole movie is two hours of the scene of Neo fighting infinite Agent Smiths but Agent Smith is non-binary and Neo is played by Cathy Bates. Money better spent than a ticket for the Last Jedi in my opinion. Your screen name cracked me up.
As Robot Head says in another video, it was his first real fight with a light saber so it was bound to go well, whilst still being in the progress of training.
It's heartbreaking. Imagine you're Mark Hamil, Star Wars was your big role, and after those movies, you went to a lot of conventions, and the character you played stays an important part of your life for over 30 years. Then, Disney buys star wars and they say they want you to play your iconic role. You agree, work out a lot, lose a lot of weight to get in shape, reunite with your old co-stars and are ready to take your character on a last adventure so to speak. In the first movie, you don't get to do much, but the whole movie just sets up how important you are and everybody wants to see you in the second one. Then, after this build-up you have to deconstruct and disrespect the legacy of your character in a humiliating manner on the big screen and sit next to the idiot responsible for this who is telling people that his movie is brilliant and you are not allowed to openly criticise the movie, so you just sit there and listen to the crap he says. Knowing that millions of fans you care about are going to look at your face in the cinemas and be disappointed must be terrible. No wonder why he looks dead inside :(
Rian-"Han solo that goes down without a fight..." Rian Han tries to murder Vader only to get disarmed by the force and arrested by dozens of stormtroopers and a Sith lord immune to blasters, quit misremembering scenes so you can say your god awful film is anything like empire strikes back.
That is one thing I will agree with The Last Jedi defenders on. Last Jedi is nothing like Empire Strikes Back beyond some superficial elements. For one thing, Empire is good.
Han acts like a normal human being not some cartoon character from a Disney movie. Rian is a short little man who will spend the rest of his life disliked for destroying Star Wars.
"As a kid I distinctly remember being disappointed by the empire strikes back!" Don't worry Rian plenty of people will distinctly remember being disappointed by the last Jedi too, the only difference is their opinions wont change over time
@@SocialDuck101 Yeah I'm going to go ahead and call bullshit on that one. The more I think about it the worse that POS gets. My fucking god everyone is sick and tired of virtue signalling PC bullshit in movies, and it only got worse as the Disney films progressed
@SunTai I will give them ONE thing they are visually great to look at. But of course the effects available today compared to what Lucas had to work with in the 70's and 80's can't compare. so he made up for it with good story writing and characters
AussieBlokeGordo Of course many still hate it, I’m not denying that. However from what I’ve seen on social media and things, many people have turned around and now like either all or part of The Last Jedi.
@@SocialDuck101 Well that's where you went wrong, social media is practically run by lefty feminist morons who delete posts or ban people who disagree with their opinions.
Rian Johnson: "Empire would be roasted today because Vader beat Luke" Infinity War: Thanos beats the Avengers, most of whom had several films of development, and wins in the end. General Audiences: Split on TLJ, praising Infinity War.
There was a divide in opinion regarding Infinity War. A lot of people wanted the "Thanus" ending of Infinity War, however an alternate ending was used...Many viewers felt betrayed. I myself don't care either way.
Loved that Thanos won. (Though it would have been better if Thor had aimed for the head or hand.. but still lost) Hated that they did the "let's go back in time" nonsense to fix it. Lazy writing.
now let's imagine Luke actually beat Vader, now that would've made the movie so great!!!! These guys are so fucking blind they can't understand the problem is the other way around, Rey beting everyone is the problem of the new movies... She has no equal. If Luke actually beat Vader, how'd one make the last movie, what a fuckin numpty.
"Han solo goes down without a fight" he straight up tries to shoot Vader on seeing him. Vader stops his blasts unarmed then he's surrounded, not much you can do after that.
The way both Lando and Han tried to stand up to Vader always inspired me as a kid. Vader was flipping terrifying... quite unlike the sequel "villains".
@@dpauls15243 Han wasn't in TLJ at all, he was also talking about how Empire would have been poorly received nowadays cause his ego is so obnoxiously large that he can't possibly admit that there's even a 1% chance that he made a bad movie.
Exactly. Another reason he didn't resist (as well as being shackled, surrounded by Stormtroopers, with no way off Bespin anyway AND being severely weakened by the excrutiating torture he'd just suffered) was that he was ultimately protecting Chewie and Leia. Rian Johnson is a fucking idiot.
Mark Hamill, after playing Luke for 4 decades & being directed by its creator: "I fundamentally disagree with your concept of this character" Rian Johnson: "No, Luke is 100% consistent with his character from the original trilogy" LOL
@Gren Wren Hamill is a writer, he's written multiple books. Character development over the course of a single movie is not only entirely possible, but has been done many times before.
@K Ren i think depending on expanded universe material to develop the character to justify a prominent aspect of how the character currently is and a choice the character made, isn't strong writing.
K Ren Doesn’t excuse bad storytelling. This shit isn’t something you’d expect from a high class high grossing film studio, this is the kinda shit you’d expect from a 14 year old fan fiction author who is LGBTQIA and proud and decides to ruin Star Wars because it has a strong male center.
K Ren.You’re trying way to hard, go watch Mauler’s review of Rian the soy boy pussy Johnson’s shit show of a movie. Type Mauler last Jedi in the search bar and learn something
People can change? Lol... OK, imagine: Emperor changed and helped Rebels to reorganise Empire back to Republic. Han changed and became a unnamed contrabandist again...wait...Leia changed and from brave soldier and kind princess became old depressed feminist losing her child...wait...Jack Sparrow from optimistic crazy antihero become drunk unwashed loser...wait...Terminator was robot-killer, but changed himself, married and started to sew curtains...fuuuck...If the hero has so radically changed (what is impossible after all he passed through), can you show us, WHY IT HAPPENED? Not? Then it is bad funfiction.
You actually have a great point here, I watched the last jedi on netflix, and I payed 10 euro’s to see empire strikes back for the 15th time or something
What’s the old saying the customer is always right. Maybe if Star Wars was a stand-alone movie that no one but the director truly understands. Maybe I would agree. But Star Wars is a 40 year old franchise that is so much more than the movies, Rj probably didn't even even read any of the comics books or played the video games. So how could he possibly know more than us fans. He doesn’t know a thing about Star Wars more than a new Star Wars fan
@@AndreNitroX Not even remotely. Fans aren't and even shouldn't be always right. “Could you imagine how people today would react to Luke getting his ass kicked by Vader?” Ummm yeah. Probably pretty well given that’s it’s a perfectly logical plot point.
Especially considering he had basically never gotten into any light saber combat at all and had to go up against one of the most skilled swordsmen in galactic history. Meanwhile Rey... well were not even gonna get started with that one
That bit in particular really annoyed me because DUH! Someone who's completely inexperienced and untrained is going to lose against someone else who's got way more of both under their belt, unlike a certain protagonist in the sequel trilogy *cough cough*
_> “Could you imagine how people today would react to Luke getting his ass kicked by Vader?”_ _> Ummm yeah. Probably pretty well given that’s it’s a perfectly logical plot point._ Sadly, he somewhat has a point. Studio execs hire people like Rian for a reason: today's main target audience is too retarded to understand plots or logic. Just look at 'Rogue One' or 'The Force Awakens' box office and reviews. Not to mention a horde of people who actually loved 'The Last Jedi'. Same goes for 'Game of Thrones' S8, 'Chernobyl' etc.
I’m not surprised that Mark is not happy with the way Rain talks about The Empire Strikes Back. Mark played Luke throughout the original trilogy. He knows Luke better than almost anyone else and if I was in Marks situation I would be really angry. It’s honestly more of an insult from the reaction Mark gives. I fell sorry for him honestly. ..... *sigh*
No, I think Mark Hamill did have some concerns with Empire Strikes Back, Mark Hamill did mentioned that he didn't like the Wampa scene because he felt like Luke shouldn't have done that because Mark is an Animal Lover.
That line and the Han one are proof this guy is a fucking fool, they make no sense if you had a brain equipped when you watched the movie. How the hell is he working in movies?
Imagine going to your favorite restaurant for years, but one day the sign outside reads "Under new ownership" After ordering a meal you find the taste is distinctly different, and not in a good way. When bringing this to your server’s attention, you’re told "Our food is great, you just have bad taste" The distinct flavor and personality of the restaurant you once loved is now gone. Sure, the restaurant still bears the same name; but now it’s just an empty shell of its former glory.
You need the hero to experience some struggle, otherwise there's no tension in your film. Luke's "getting his ass handed to him" was important for his character development and made Vader more imposing and dangerous
All Luke did was get his ass kicked until ROTJ. The Jabba's Barge scene was the first time he was unequivocally confident and victorious. Sure, he blew up the Death Star, but that was only because Han showed up to save his ass and he finally trusted in the Force for the first time. His best friend was also killed in the process... ...another thing Rian doesn't seem to get. He acts like Luke was a Chuck Norris character in the original trilogy.
Vader had won two fights by then, first against Obi-wan and then against Luke, it makes you see him as powerful and dangerous. So when Luke finally defeats him in RotJ and turns him back to the light side to defeat the Emperor it's a triumphant victory and climax that has been building over the last three movies.
@Rep Ninja that's what I said about Obi Wan contradicting himself: he was dealing in an absolute, the deleted scene where Anakin begged for his help would have proven my point further.
Imagine if the Jedi could only use vague terms in all the movies "It may appear that my opinion regarding sand could possibly be a negative one" "Yet another landing that has chance of being a happy one" "Do or do not, there is no try, or maybe there is, do what you want" "You might never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy, or maybe you will"
I saw Empire opening weekend. I was 17 at the time. I do recall some people expressing reservations about how Empire ended, but it was pretty mild and didn't detract from an understanding that the film overall was quite strong. There was no polarization of opinion about it.
@@MrSatampra I can only imagine that they didn't get the same feeling as the end of a new hope. It wasn't that they hated it, it just has a different tone and feel to it.

Mark has to do what he must as a professional...but thank god he got the word out for the fans. Rian might have ruined Luke...but Mark's responses after and during TLJ make him the Hero we all deserved.
The entire comment is stupid because Johnson says “would have been roasted” as if it hadn’t already come out 37 years earlier... I think Mark was honestly incredulous at how stupid Rian is.
You can't blame Mark Hamill for picking up a big paycheck for a few weeks work, but you can see that the publicity tour with RJ was killing him. He hated what Johnson did to his character and to the Stars Wars Universe. Yes, Mark, we all hate what he did. Everyone who is over 30 and remembers the original trilogy AS IT WAS hate what he did. All that shit about throwing away light sabers and burning the Jedi books (which didn't even exist prior to Johnson making them up, so guess what, Rian, we don't give a fuck) was all about Johnson spitting in the eye of Lucas and the fans and, frankly, Joseph Campbell and good storytelling to boot. He's a no-talent, whiny asshole. I wish Mark Hamill had walked off the set.
@@FredMaverik Well, not when it came out, but I remember special edition back in ninetees :-) Not that it matters :-) But definitely, there was a difference compared to these days when prequels hit theaters. How does Mark restrain himself?
George D. Marsack I’m surprised he hasn’t lost his shit in one of these interviews yet, or at least told him he was talking out of his ass like the ‘Han Solo put up no fight in Bespin’
"Imagine how people would react to luke losing!" Yeah Rian, he should have just curbstomped Vader with no preparation or training, right? People love that...
Yeah. Who wants to see someone work hard and possibly fail to achieve their goals. We want them to have everything handed to them on a silver plater. That's entertainment.
The best part is that he did have training. That was at the end of the movie after he left Yoda and he STILL got beat by Vader. So a trained Luke isn’t even as good as an untrained Rey 😂 fucking pathetic. Disney Star Wars sucks
The fact that he thinks people would be "outraged" to see luke lose to vader should disqualify him from storytelling altogether. Who would pay this man money at this point, knowing that, in his opinion, the ideal protagonist should have no setbacks?

In 1980, my entire childhood revolved around Star Wars. I promise any skeptics who weren't around then, Empire was absolutely 100% universally loved. There was literally nobody who wasn't giddy over that movie, it exceeded all expectations, and left an agonizing cliffhanger. I was out of patience waiting for the next movie by morning after seeing it.
@El-ahrairah I strongly disagree as well. First of all, Lucas understands SW better than anyone, because he created it. He had amazing world building and story, and TCW fixed some of the technical problems with the PT. It is actually the best SW media imo
@El-ahrairah Also what's up with Yoda's lightsaber? Why is everyone so mad about it? It showed that even the wisest master stepped on the Battlefield while at war, while needed
When any property gets so big with so much money and so many reputations behind it, they always turn to shit. Mark looks like he’s passing a kidney stone in every one of those interviews. He looks like they are physically painful for him. It’s hard just watching him go through that.
I saw Empire in the theater at age 10 and loved it. Blown away by the ending. And by the way Rian, Han did not go down without a fight. The whole (non Luke thread) of the movie after Hoth is about the Empire trying to capture Han. They even had to resort to bounty hunters and betrayal to get him. He put up plenty of fight.
I hope Rian Johnson has a niece / nephew or small child in his life that will watch all of the star wars then get to The Last Jedi and just honestly and harmlessly ask him why did he destroy Star Wars. I hope that day comes and he will finally realize what he has done lol
"Can you imagine what they would have said about Luke getting his ass handed to him by Vader" What's this Rian Johnson hears, a character who develops slowly over multiple movies and is fighting the greatest force wielder of all time???
Rian Johnson "Empire would be roasted today because Luke lost to Vader" This is why he wrote Rey as an indestructible force god who never loses even when it's fake fights with Luke. what a hack.
Salmon the prequels May have been objectively bad, but they were still enjoyable (even if for the wrong reasons sometimes), and they still felt like Star Wars. The Sequel trilogy looks and feels like a knock off, like comparing Lepin to proper LEGO. The Sequels are just bad, next to no redeeming qualities, I can’t even give the special effects any props.
Salmon the sequels feel like a 3rd rate marvel movie, with out of place, tension breaking, dad jokes, action that’s more comical than suspenseful, and a plot hole riddled story.
Could you imagine making a movie where an inexperienced, impatient hero who hasn't completed his training gets completely beaten by the strongest villain in the franchise? Such a polarizing scene.
Rian Johnson is making stuff up. I watched "The Empire Strikes Back" when it came out, and the film was beloved. I was also one of those people waiting in line to see "Return of the Jedi".
@Bblurre Wikipedia says he was born in December 1973, so he was already around when the movies came out. He was around six or seven by the time Empire was released, which means he might have been disappointed at the time, as it was a bit more of character development and less action and at that age character development isn't really something you often look for in a movie.
Not the case😂, but there’s a line that Really MINOR SPOILERS Luke says after he catches his lightsaber along the words, “A Jedi’s Lightsaber should be treated with more respect” after Rey tosses it off. It was obviously a total burn to what RJ did to Luke and throwing shade on the scene where he tosses it off behind him at the beginning, I couldn’t help but smirk at that scene.
Not just Ryan Entire Disney doesn’t understand Star wars! Except Dave Filoni, that was before Emper- ehm, Kathleen kennedy. And also Edwards, who got fired
Rouge one was a great movie, the only great movie by Disney Star Wars. But Star Wars is a too big title imo and it just wasn’t good enough to be Star Wars.
The Luke I know, from the EU and playing Jedi Knight and Academy, would have sensed the darkness in his student and approached them tenderly, with grace and patience. This is a Luke Skywalker who has mastered some aspects of the force, who has traveled to many worlds and learned A LOT about the force, through holocrons etc. He definitely would not choose to attack his student. The switch that was portrayed in the show to Luke's personality would have required something SERIOUSLY BAD happening to him off screen. I w ouldn't mind any of the changes to Luke if they were shown or explained but there was nothing it's as if he didn't know the character. It's like they hired someone who doesn't know how to do their job. Like he lied on the resume or something lol.
Didn't you know? That's no longer canon, so we the fans no longer know how Luke is. So now they can make dumb shit like this happen whenever they want. I bet that's what Diseny thought when they said only the movies are canon. Well Disney, go fuck yourselves .
Luke wouldn't have tried to kill Ben Skywalker because he sensed the dark side in him. He would have taught Ben how to harness it and temper it and use the force in a balanced way. That was the lesson of the first 3 movies.
"A New Hope" that name put clearly on display the theme of hope in the original trilogy. To instill a feeling of hope in people, Luke had many optimistic & positive personality characteristics. Whereas in the most recent (in my eyes illegitimate) trilogy Luke was pessimistic and negative thereby instilling a feeling of hopelessness. That means the new 'Luke' was in direct opposition to what that character originally represented for the sole purpose of advancing the plot and enabling a trilogy.
A Horner while it sucks I can forgive d&d because they ran out of source material and that sucks. but Star Wars has so many storylines already written that are so entertaining (see: legends) that boggles my mind how they fucked it so bad.
What kind of kid in the 80s was actually "disappointed" with the Empire Strikes Back? I was a kid back then, and every-single other kid I knew LOVED and was obsessed with it. All we did back then was pretend we were in in Star Wars. I remember how jealous I was at my neighbor because he got an AT-AT Walker. It was the first thing I really-really wanted. You know, I don't even believe him... I really don't. I think he's just trying to cover his a55 some more.

Yeah and "how would the fans react to Luke being beaten by Vader". The dude is beyond clueless. Actually, I may be giving him too much credit, as I see what he's done to Star Wars as a deliberate and hostile act.
@Davey Jones Exactly. And by the way Johnson... Solo and Leia were freaking BETRAYED!!! They got sold out!!! How do you just ignore that and say "Han went down without a fight"?? Furthermore, there is absolutely a difference between trying to shoot your way out of a room when it's just your own neck on the line vs. being completely outnumbered, outgunned, ambushed, disarmed and faced with the very real prospect of the only people you care about being murdered if you don't surrender (all of them!). Vader force pulls the blaster from his hand. What exactly was he supposed to do at that point, karate? Not only is Han *not* simply "going down without a fight," he's actually making the bravest choice of all, sacrificing himself so that his friends may live. He does the only thing POSSIBLE to save his friends and give them a chance to survive. How is that going down without a fight? In the words of the great Jean Luc Picard, "It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life!"
daedalus_suzuki if they had hired someone to destroy Star Wars as his job description who wouldn’t have damaged it as much as small head. When even Mark Hamill himself knows how bad Luke’s character was in TLJ (even by saying he played jake Skywalker not Luke Skywalker) cause it was nothing like Luke In the last movie (ROTJ)
Fun fact, Han solo was frozen in carbonite because they weren't sure if they could get Harrison Ford signed on for a third movie because Harrison Ford was signed on for each movie individually instead of signed on for all three movies at once, that way if they couldn't get Harrison Ford on for a third movie, they could easily kill off Han Solo
He's very condescending which I absolutely dislike. He's just another arrogant film director so full of himself because he gets to direct the most well known movie franchise in film history.
The only thing disappointing about anything Empire Strikes Back related is that over a thousand shills dialiked this awesomely crafted video. We'll done, Robothead. Keep 'em coming!
How does he get away with posing this as a hypothetical?? It DID happen in the movie, and yes, there were people there who saw it, and who reacted to it. And nobody said "Luke could never get beaten that bad by the most powerful Force user in the universe." Not. One. Person. F you, Johnson.

EDIT: Additionally, Chris Chibnall was a long-time critic of _Dr. Who_ and now that he's the showrunner, the show has gotten worse as a result. Rian Johnson is to _Star Wars_ as Chris Chibnall is to _Dr. Who_ where both men are absolutely clueless.
He pretty much has, since the Thirteenth Doctor is almost universally hated by how shallow her character is just like a lot of characters in the main cast of the Sequel Trilogy are all fairly shallow themselves. Both directors suck and both have destroyed their respective franchises. Therefore, the analogy still works.
@Ricky Shiffer what? Vader new about the Force for over 40 years, he mastered it, became Darth Vader, and became a killing machine. Of course he was going to kick luke's ass.
My dad was in the army when ROTJ came out and I remember him telling me he was fucking pumped when he saw BDW leading the charge at the end. He is mixed and grew up in the 70s around a lot of racial turmoil. He said the army was one of the few places where that didnt matter and thought it was cool in Star Wars it was the same. To me that's how you do diversity and messaging right.
ruin johnson? I mean you say he's a child but you're making fun of his name because you didn't like what he did with a star wars movie. I mean your're the child here
@@ObeWillems Also, did you say something similar to Ruin Johnson himself on Twitter about his name calling? lol I'm sure you didn't because you are a true NPC.
I've always maintained that Rey should have been a Skywalker and had it revealed in the Last Jedi. It's the only scenario that would have justified Luke's actions and behavior... if when he sensed Ben's thoughts he had a vision, of Ben already turned to the dark side, but more importantly of Ben, now Kylo, turning Luke's own daughter to the darkside. That vision is the only thing I could see justifying him even considering to ignite his lightsaber. His love and desire to protect his own daughter, after his wife was killed (by Snoke to add more depth and history to that story arc). He hires someone to take his daughter away, to a location even he doesn't know, to protect her from Snoke, who is obsessed with ending the Skywalker line. Then all these years later, he sees the vision of Kylo turning her to the dark side. Every thing he's done to protect her has failed, maybe his only chance to save her is to sacrifice Ben, here and now... that's the only believable motivation for that scene. And of course, the catch 22, by his own actions and response he ends up driving Ben away for good, leading him down the path to the dark side and fulfilling his vision. The very actions he takes to prevent the events from happening just end up causing them to happen anyway. A self fulfilling prophecy. That would be enough to drastically change his character, to take himself out of the equation. And then, upon learning of her true parentage, learning that her own father not only just abandoned her but had no intention of returning. That he turned his back on her, on his family, ultimately drives her to join Kylo. Family is important to Rey, you don't turn your back on family. Luke lied to her, decieved her, abandoned her, turned his back on her. Kylo did not. The second movie ends with Rey joining Kylo, the future of the resistance and who will rise up to defeat the First Order is unknown. That, would have made a much more compelling second movie. In my own humble opinion.
Wow such good reasoning. I thought TLJ did Luke great. I mean JJ put him on the island. He would just appear weak and it would be a waste of time if he just took the lightsaber and went with Rey to face the first order. He must have a purpose on the island
@@Yoda-wf6bu So many other plausible explanations: he gave up on using the force as a weapon, because he is tired of the war. He wanted to become one with the force and was waiting for a worthy apprentice, he was biding his time. He had PTSD and couldn't fight anymore he was sick and couldn't fight anymore. He couldn't bring himself to kill the kid. He promised Han that he wouldn't kill his son. Soany other good reasons. Rian was just boring.
@@Yoda-wf6bu I'm with Cat on this. Luke being like this COULD work...but Rian's only explanation makes no sense, given Luke's history with Vader. He OVERCAME the dark side in that moment. He learned that family and integrity was worth more than the flash of emotion he had in that moment.
everywhere cat everywhere cat that’s what he did. He stopped using the force as a weapon. The Jedi wanted him to kill the sith. But he is above that. Why would he seek an apprentice if he’s believes that? So you want him to stop using the force as a weapon but still want to train a force sensitive killer? That doesn’t make sense. Do you want him to struggle with PTSD and being too sick to fight? I wouldn’t imagine the fandom having trouble accepting that. (Sarcastic) Luke Skywalker is a character that has always gone through instincts. That’s our Luke. There must be consequences if he didn’t train soon as a child. When he fought Vader. And when he said that he will make leia turn to the dark side, Luke swoops in from no where without thinking of his action nor consequences and starts swinging at vader. (Another example is when he attacked the emperor after he said his rebel fleet has fell in a trap) That’s why he ignited the lightsaber in Kylo’s bedroom. “By pure instinct I thought I could stop it...it past like fleeting shadow and I. Was left with a shame.” As said the Jedi wanted Luke to kill the sith. But Luke refuses. Just like he does now. “I won’t kill my father”, Kenobi replies “then the emperor has already won.” And his death. Was the most coolest fucking death we’ve ever seen. It really shows how powerful he has become. Watch that scene again. If you don’t get goosebumps then you’re crazy. (Right I’m arguing with a guy lower down in the comments) Would you rather want Luke to be brutally killed by Ben or want another Ben Kenobi sacrifice that we’ve already seen? This is something new and original. Something we’ve only seen one in a Legend Luke comic.
It's incredible how little the people involved in creating these movies knew about the originals. It's like they never heard of them and someone just explained it during a bike ride and halfway through they said, "ok I get it," and then sat down to write a week later.
@@JayInDecent I'd put it in front. ROTJ has the better ending for sure because it wraps up the trilogy in an incredibly satisfying way with Vader's redemption bringing balance to the force and all but as individual films I'd say the cinematography and plot of ESB was better. However, just my opinion; I think both movies are stellar!
@@unendingvoid ha. Yeah everyone has their favorite. just last time I watched the trilogy I realize that I really liked Return of the Jedi. I mean Princess Leia in her slave outfit I mean come on. it's popular to hate on Ewoks but I think they are cute and they are fierce. I think everyone forgets the Ewoks were going to freaking eat them at first. All in all I absolutely adore the OT. That's what I grew up watching every day as a kid
@GloomZzyy memorable moments? Every movie has those lol. ESB - AT-AT Walker attack -Asteroid Chase -Han being frozen in carbonite. Also the 'I love you', "I know" scene. -When Lando opens the door to the dinner table and Vader is sitting at the opposite end. Han immediately starts firing and not only are his blaster bolts blocked, his blaster is taken right out of his hand. Vader says: "We would be honored if you would join us" - and who could forget the amazing, most memorable line in the entirety of the franchise. No, I am your father. A terrific, unexpected reveal. Probably one of the greatest plot twist in sci-fi history expressed perfectly by the God voice of James Earl Jones.
@jdl 96 What you’ve identified is what these sequels don’t have: passion You can have all the talented artists, actors, and creators make a film, but it will be a husk without the passion. The prequels are ghastly in terms of dialogue. However, the plot and pacing of the story was put together with love, and we see that when we look at how it fits into the OT. My favorite part is how Anakin is always let down and abandoned. Qui-Jon saves Anakin then dies. His mom says I love you then dies. His wife says I love you, but he kills her. Kenobi says I love you and then abandons him....for Palp to pick up the pieces and to never abandon his prized apprentice. Then, against all odds, he discovers his son who is also a killer pilot and a powerful force user who then abandons him by letting himself fall. But, his son not only comes back, but comes back to join him...by pulling him back to the light. Then, even as he fights his son, gets bested badly, and is getting abandoned by his master...his son stands up to the evil that swayed him all those years ago and does what Anakin couldn’t. Anakin then competes the prophecy by defeating Palp [EDIT] and gives his pure-hearted son the chance to start fresh, separate from the awful corruption that plagued the Old Republic and the old Jedi Order. Anakin brings balance to the force. The sequels ruined this and everybody should realize it by seeing the first 6 movies through this lense.
"The Empire Strikes Back was polarizing" WTF Star Wars. All 3 of them. Was the height of my youth. I was 17 in 1980 and I remember it well. The only people who did not like The Empire Strikes Back was the old people 50 + (my age today.. hmm maybe that's why I hated The Force Awakens...... Naaa. As a child, Rian "Literally" Johnson was shown a parody version of Empire Strikes Back by his parents and never watched another Star Wars film since. "The Emperor Strips Black", uncensored, made him the man he is today.

This is what bugs me the most. Fine try to talk shit about an old movie, but to do it in front of the lead actors face knowing full well Mark adored the character and is now contractually obligated to not speak out... it just angers me. What an utter trash asshole.
Darn right I'm a hero! I would never say no, and I know the REAL Luke Skywalker wouldn't either! JAKE Skywalker on the other hand, well I can't speak for him but he's the fictional ravings of a madman who never understood Star Wars anyway so no need to waste our time on him.
@Gren Wren thanks for the essay but nobody gives a shit. Sorry you wasted your time. I enjoyed the movie btw. There were just parts that were obviously explaining things that made no sense from TLJ. Dont get so triggered over simple comments.
G Ren let me go over this as fairly as possible. Rotten Tomatoes can be influenced by people spamming the site with downvotes, but it can also be spammed by upvotes. You claim this is some big backlash by a vocal minority, but where’s the majority? If the majority were truly moved and satisfied with this movie, why wouldn’t they support it? Your answer here is that the people who like it don’t care as much as the haters, basically saying all the haters are child like and have nothing better to do. That’s not a fair or valid argument, as there is literally no proof of any of this for the Last Jedi. Also, you refuse to acknowledge that the critic score could easily be skewed the other way. You then go on to say that TLJ was a master class in film making, so here’s the question: what was amazing? Rian Johnson can DIRECT fine, but on a writing level the story was all over the place, trying to ignore the past, subvert expectations, use Marvel level humor, and de-rail the entire set up from the first movie, which you refer to as Johnson “gave Abrams a clean slate”. You claim that saying all the build up of a trilogy in the middle part of the movie, leaving NO payoff for the final act, a GOOD THING!? Abrams was creatively bankrupt in Rise of Skywalker, yet ignoring the fact that EVERYTHING he tried to set up was thrown away (Rey’s parents, Snoke, Luke), which just shows that you don’t understand how to build a movie or a trilogy.
@G Ren I dont hate women. I dont hate feminism I hate people who use women and feminism as a shield. I dont like sequels because whenever I talk about bad sides of movies on internet I always end up being called sexist. I dont like sequels because rey is a mary sue. I dont like sequels because most people that likes sequels has no idea about what a mary sue is. I DONT LIKE SEQUELS because they are lying just to make their movie more tolerable.
Rian Johnson was six years old when "Empire" came out, and three when Star Wars was released. My brother is 3 months older than Rian and doesnt really remember seeing Star Wars in the theatre, and has some memories of seeing ESB, but not of standing in line for 2.5 hours. I was just turning 11 that summer and I remember falling madly in love (more than I had already been since 1978) with Harrison Ford and being swept away by the message of the movie. I went home and started writing my own Star Wars stories (long since disappeared). I thought it was the greatest movie ever made and I will go toe to toe with Rian and die on that hill. All he has to do is say when.
May 4th 2019.. My wife and I went to the Adelaide Entertainment Center to watch THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, scored live by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. This was an awesome event, everybody loved it, in particular when returning from the intermission... The lights went out, it was pure darkness and silence, then Ole Mate Conductor ditched his little baton for a fucking mini red lightsaber, and led the orchestra in a perfect rendition of The Imperial March! - That iconic tune first heard in Empire. The packed crowd was enthralled, and went bezerk at the end. It was a moment I'll never forget. My eyes are wet just thinking about it..
Rian Johnson was born in Dec 1973. He would have been 6 years old when Empire Strikes Back was released in May 1980. How would a 6-year old in 1980 (no internet) have his finger on the pulse of how well a movie was received by critics or the public? He hadn’t even started 1st Grade. What part of Empire would a 6 year old kid not like??

The fact Rian thinks Luke getting beaten by Vader is a bad scene shows how out of touch he is.
It actually is a bad scene. So much wasted potantial. Just imagine Luke striking down Vader or more than that even kill of Palpatine. That would have been cool. Or let an X-Wing Hyperspaceram a Super Star Destroyer. Man that would have been so cool.

*literally have protected the republic for tens of thousands of years from the sith*
Rian: *no*
Remember how the Jedi were such a major power for the status quo (which most consider "good") that Palpatine had to orchestrate a decade and a half of war conspiracy to remove them from his rise to power?

Here's what I say, it makes perfect sense because it was DARTH VADER! And Darth Vader was a very strong, established character by the climax of TESB. He wasn't a bland Mary-Sue who came out of nowhere with mysterious, unearned superpowers. And Luke was only part of the way through his character arc and had lessons to learn.

I kinda feel sorry for Mark Hamil having to get involved with this desecration of the franchise. After his role in the original trilogy.
I love how Mark Hamill’s just sitting in the interview having a look like “really? Really?”

_> “Could you imagine how people today would react to Luke getting his ass kicked by Vader?”_
_> Ummm yeah. Probably pretty well given that’s it’s a perfectly logical plot point._
Sadly, he somewhat has a point.
@@DigiPen92 that's nothing to compare with him saying he "fundamentally disagreed" with the entire part his character plays in the film

When the plot is so bad, a simple 5 minute conversation between a couple characters could have resolved the entire problem.
It's literally the opposite of what people didn't like about Rey in TLJ, how could it possibly be hated? wtf Rian
He's used to Rey kicking everybody's ass in this new shitty trilogy.
Imagine going to your favorite restaurant for years, but one day the sign outside reads "Under new ownership"
After ordering a meal you find the taste is distinctly different, and not in a good way. When bringing this to your server’s attention, you’re told "Our food is great, you just have bad taste"
The distinct flavor and personality of the restaurant you once loved is now gone. Sure, the restaurant still bears the same name; but now it’s just an empty shell of its former glory.
Good analogy. It could apply to, "Finger lickin' good!" Those who grew up during the 60's and 70's know what we all miss.
Oof this is all too true.
That gave me chills. Unlike TLJ
And don't forget those "culinary critics" claiming everyone who hated that restaurant are in fact Russian bots in disguise.... ugh.
The face of disbelief on Mark Hamill as he watches Rian spurt his nonsense is golden

Yeh IIII menber!
How old is Ruin Johnson? I hear he's in his 40's but he acts like a child that didn't get his Participation Award.
Erick Draven he was just four years old when the first star wars trilogy premiered he's just a kid then and he's still a kid now
ruin johnson?

Dang this is good (considering what it's based on)
Even my mom hated The Last Jedi. Her reasoning was the same as mine: Rian Johnson doing Luke dirty.
(Sarcastic)
Luke Skywalker is a character that has always gone through instincts. That’s our Luke. There must be consequences if he didn’t train soon as a child.
When he fought Vader. And when he said that he will make leia turn to the dark side, Luke swoops in from no where without thinking of his action nor consequences and starts swinging at vader.
(Another example is when he attacked the emperor after he said his rebel fleet has fell in a trap)
That’s why he ignited the lightsaber in Kylo’s bedroom. “By pure instinct I thought I could stop it...it past like fleeting shadow and I. Was left with a shame.”
As said the Jedi wanted Luke to kill the sith. But Luke refuses. Just like he does now. “I won’t kill my father”, Kenobi replies “then the emperor has already won.”
And his death. Was the most coolest fucking death we’ve ever seen. It really shows how powerful he has become. Watch that scene again. If you don’t get goosebumps then you’re crazy.
(Right I’m arguing with a guy lower down in the comments)
Would you rather want Luke to be brutally killed by Ben or want another Ben Kenobi sacrifice that we’ve already seen? This is something new and original. Something we’ve only seen one in a Legend Luke comic.
@@Yoda-wf6bu I cant believe some people are actually defending the atrocity called TLJ...

It's incredible how little the people involved in creating these movies knew about the originals. It's like they never heard of them and someone just explained it during a bike ride and halfway through they said, "ok I get it," and then sat down to write a week later.
The empire strikes back is one of the greatest movies ever
Yep right behind ROTJ
@@JayInDecent I'd put it in front. ROTJ has the better ending for sure because it wraps up the trilogy in an incredibly satisfying way with Vader's redemption bringing balance to the force and all but as individual films I'd say the cinematography and plot of ESB was better. However, just my opinion; I think both movies are stellar!
@@unendingvoid ha. Yeah everyone has their favorite. just last time I watched the trilogy I realize that I really liked Return of the Jedi. @@JayInDecent Yes. Leia slave outfit. My first introduction to- nevermind.
@GloomZzyy memorable moments? Every movie has those lol. ESB
- AT-AT Walker attack
-Asteroid Chase
-Han being frozen in carbonite. Also the 'I love you', "I know" scene.
-When Lando opens the door to the dinner table and Vader is sitting at the opposite end. Han immediately starts firing and not only are his blaster bolts blocked, his blaster is taken right out of his hand. Vader says: "We would be honored if you would join us"
- and who could forget the amazing, most memorable line in the entirety of the franchise. No, I am your father. A terrific, unexpected reveal. Probably one of the greatest plot twist in sci-fi history expressed perfectly by the God voice of James Earl Jones.
Yea I just can’t see the last Jedi being held as a classic in 10 years.
Not a chance in hell.
the sequels will go down as the worst star wars movie. It will hold that title forever and hey, that's something to brag about!
it would be classic in a 100 years from now on, well classically bullshit trash that it :P
Dude in 10 years it won't be cannon. Lol
@jdl 96
What you’ve identified is what these sequels don’t have: passion
You can have all the talented artists, actors, and creators make a film, but it will be a husk without the passion.

I was laughing so hard at all the parts in Rise of Skywalker where JJ Abrams had to fix something from The Last Jedi.
So you laugh thru out the all film?
