CTR's behavior was a paradox and many judge him, not so back in his day - those who knew and loved him - a few of those I worked with in Boulder CO. We want to understand how it can be that CTR carried on and yet is defined as a great teacher, which he was. The Dalai Llama cannot explain the situation better than you or I - but wisely puts focus on the path and to follow the behavior of The Buddha.
Was he such a great teacher? Its seems his defining legacy was his alcoholism and appointing a delusional pedophile to his succession. His books are reworked transcripts edited by a team of people. I'm more curious about how so many people fell for the delusion of this shangri la.
@@RK-ec5de These are interrelated aspects of the path that have occupied me quite a lot. It seems that certain degrees of attainment are "independent" of personal ethics, similar to how Miles Davis made sublime music but was a shitty person. We often seem to conflate the two (master of something & ethical human) in a naive way. However, I also believe that people worth calling your Master, teacher, whatever, should exhibit a marriage of the two qualities. Otherwise and if/when we get disappointed by the truth, we should cut the Buddha's head off and throw ourselves back into the arms of the "True Guru" within.
For me, the insights and teachings of a flawed -- even very flawed -- teacher can be valid. However, such abusive behavior ought not be excused and justified. It abuses and weakens the very foundation of the Sangha, the Third Jewel, the embodiment of the Buddha and Dharma. For that reason an abusive teacher must somehow be held accountable. The common justification that the lower cannot understand the higher in this case is foolish because the behavior itself is of the lower. It behooves each student in such a case to take personal responsibility.
Why did you not share Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo's question here? It would have been the right and fair thing to do, even if in some corners of Buddhism people still feel that the word of males, even one as qualified as HH the Dalai Lama, are the only words worth attending to.
I love His Holiness Dalai Lama very much. If we are to be measured by what we have given of ourselves in service to others in the end of the end, his life has benefited billions and will for all time. He lives his life the way he has so that others might live better lives. He makes Mahayana Buddism accessable and clear while never watering it down. Never has he ever degraded another philosophy or religion. China commited and continues to commit genocide against his country and 'his people' and he responds with compassion and level headedness. While much of the world is misbehaving, being deeply cruel, snipping at one another, competing rather than cooperating, killing rather than helping to live...and on and on and on...he is the reminder that we have a choice about how we respond and how we want to be with others, even those who are cruel. They can be opportunities for growing compassion or to lash out with mindless hurtful language and intent. I've looked for ways to live and be at peace with the cruelties inherent in the very fact we are all living and human. He and Mahayana Buddhism askes us to question everything rather than accepting it's teachings without reasoning them through for ourselves. This is very important, to me, and I believe actually, for every person. It seems not only practical, it seems respectful. It seems to be about cooperation. It's certainly not dogmatic which is wonderful. Thank you to the 14th Dalai Lama. Thank you to all Dalai Lama's who came before him.

Tenzin Palmo's statements are fiercely intelligent and important. The Dalai Lama's reply avoids the abuse by lamas totally. He says that it's the Western students' fault because tantra is secret and only for the chosen few. What bs! All Vajrayana is tantra. As if secrecy had anything to do with it, except to protect the abusers for being called into account for their unethical behavior, serial sexual abuses, deceptions and harm. Alex Berzin adds that lamas use tantric initiations as a carrot on a stick to generate money, pointing out the lamas' responsibility - or lack of it - when it comes to tantra. What an ugly, unethical thing, using tantric initiations to generate donations! Yikes. ai ai ai, the Dalai Lama insists that he uses mass tantra initiations to teach people how to be ethical. Why not just give teachings on that??!! Or at least teach the LAMAS to be ethical. The DL speaks as if the general population is so unethical that at least for the days they are attending the people who come behave nicely. No mentioning the unethical behavior of the lamas!!! Total avoidance. And then he says "restrict the tantric teachings" to Western students as if it was STUDENTS seeking to learn tantra that was wrong, they are at fault and not the lamas acting out!!! Frankly insane. And that Westerners need to set up a fund for Western students who cannot afford to pay the exorbitant fees the lamas charge to learn the tantra or get initiations?? It is just NUTS. Money grubbing, avoidance of talking about lamas committing abuse, putting all the blame on the students again and again.
Maybe somethings arent clear.HH says that tantra should be secret and not be imparted or recieved so freely.Noone is wrong to seek that but breaking Samaya is a serious offence after accepting someone as your lama.Thats why its better to check the lama even if u have to do it for 12 years,as he explains. Regarding the funds, idk what fees is paid but if its just the plane tickets, the orgainising fee or others..funds can be collected and those who cant give can also attend it.
What if the DL was right? What if these teachings are only for a chosen few students? Just because you want to have sex in the name of spirituality doesn't mean everyone is coming from the same place.
Question is fully stated in second half of previous video. ruclips.net/video/yuoTdzGK--U/видео.html. It’s a bit more involved than can be summarized here, but it’s in regard to the behavior of tantra teachers having sex with students and doing drugs and then causing their own students to do the same.

Some people think that His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s response to Tenzin Palmo’s question was misleading or have avoided all together. I think His Holiness has given the best response. First of all, not all Buddhist listened to Dalai Lama especially the lamas from Kagyue and Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism (which CT and Sogyal are from). His Holiness’ stand and message is very clear- discipline is the key. It doesn’t require him to react to somebody’s questions. In other words if you have been listening or getting teachings from His Holiness you’ll know. None ofHis disciple dare to act like Chogyum- Period. In His short answer his holiness has said so much. He asked his Guru- Dilgo Kyetsel Rinpoche about Chogyum Trungkpa”s behavior . Why is this relevant?. Dilgo Kyentse is one of the top most Vajra masters and I’m sure that Chogyum Teungpa is Khyentse Rinpoche”s disciple. Only a master can control his student and it seems like his holiness has made the suggestion to Dilgo Khyentse. Some people think that His Holiness’ is like the Pope. While lay people and majority Tibetan feels that way and will listen to him whole heartedly, many lamas especially from the other sects doesn’t feel that way. That was and is very unfortunate. They only follow their own root guru. On the other hand, His holiness has also mentioned that it’s too early to receive the tantra teachings- but I know this will not sit well with many of us and most certainly many from the Nyingma and Kagyue school. His Holiness is the one of the main proponent of studying sutras as he wants to empower the students before embarking on the tantra journey. Alas!! Most will not listen- they all need the most profound teachings first, and get the result right away. Unfortunately, you will not have the knowledge or the basic prerequisite to practice tantras and you know the end result will be disappointment.
The tantra is everywhere ,.it is not property of Tibenham Buddhism In cultures in Africa, Tantra is a daily normal approach to life. There has arisen too much political flavor in the Tibethan Buddhism, unfortunately.
I'm sorry but the answer of Dalai Lama is misleading, the problem is not coming for a neophytes who took the tantric teachings too early and misunderstood them, the problem is coming from respected lamas, and by respected I mean recognize by Tibetan lamaic system, Chogyam Trungpa or Sogyal Lakar are not self taught non traditional westerners who were not initiate through the tradition. In other words the tradition is not rigorous enough to keep itself clean from elements who'll abuse power.
What happens with your Kalacakra happens with other tantras too. It is neglecting the principle of tantra to expose it in public, even to collect people. Buddha taught Kalacakra not to collect people. What Dalai Lama says sound so mundane
Tibetan Buddhism is not unlike Catholicism, a lot of pomp and abuse and sleight of hand. Theravada is no pomp and all Dhamma. The world loves Mahayana Tibetan Buddhism because it is the world disguised as religion! The Buddha was a forest monk, not decked out in finery. Tibetan Buddhism looks glamorous, after all, Dalai Lama owns 19 Rolex watches ...
Nothing in Buddhism or Tibetan Buddhism is pomp; clearly you don't know much about it at all. Every symbol, mantra, visualization, teaching or relic has a purpose.

She stands up for injustice here, tries to decrease suffering by acknowledges the victims of Chogyam Trungpa's (Shambala) abusive behaviors and she invites HH the Dalai Lama to the same. She's being ignored instead. If restructuring Buddhism means making it a safer place where unskilful teachers are called out, I think that's a good thing. HHDL's comment is abhorrent from that perspective. That suffering needs acknowledgement and to be detested, especially if someone is known for his boddhissatvic characteristics. This will be my last response in our conversation, thanks again for your perspective. May you be well.

It's very sad that all the misconduct did by so called Lamas in west have to give answer by his holiness

Listening to his holiness, the stary stary night song rings in my head. “ they would not listen , they wouldn’t know how, perhaps they listen now”.
In the Kalachakra it describes a holy war between Buddhists and Abrahamists.
The kalachakra says 'barbarians'
Money grubbing, avoidance of talking about lamas committing abuse, putting all the blame on the students again and again.
ruclips.net/video/HScZ1rLBfz8/видео.html
On consort and crazy wisdom

@@garrettbrowning3641 Of course, they are.
The tantra is everywhere ,.it is not property of Tibenham Buddhism
In cultures in Africa, Tantra is a daily normal approach to life. There has arisen too much political flavor in the Tibethan Buddhism, unfortunately.
Salute to the translator
The Buddha had no gurus. Why do you?🤷
I'm sorry but the answer of Dalai Lama is misleading, the problem is not coming for a neophytes who took the tantric teachings too early and misunderstood them, the problem is coming from respected lamas, and by respected I mean recognize by Tibetan lamaic system, Chogyam Trungpa or Sogyal Lakar are not self taught non traditional westerners who were not initiate through the tradition. In other words the tradition is not rigorous enough to keep itself clean from elements who'll abuse power.
Or its not concerned with that
Spiritualism can’t be propagated the way of capitalise market.
Every symbol, mantra, visualization, teaching or relic has a purpose.
how do you know that? and even if he does I'm sure they were all gifts, then a collection... no harm
I have a different totally answer to the question of 'Crazy Wisdom.' Before I say that just want to state that I call Tenzin Palmo Her Holiness & our dear Dalai Lama His Haughtiness. She has proven her worth, has he? Or just born a King, like a Feudal Lord in a land that maybe exploited the poor? Lived like a King, everyone else but his monks in the palace, experienced work from morning to night, supplying him & his monks {for untold generations} with all that was needed. I'm not an expert, this is just a CASUAL, not deeply studied opinion. If I am wrong, forgive me..........I will give my ideas about 'Crazy Wisdom' in the next comment, as don't want this to be too long.

Once gendun chomphel said be aware monkey and yellows hair, that's what happening ,Buddhism not for those like blaming others as those victims doing here,
I no longer have respect for the Dalai Lama.
With the recent video of dalai lama asking a young boy to suck his tongue it's no wonder he did nothing to stop the sexual abuse by lamas back in 1993. He was asked to sign a declaration that teachers shouldn't have sex with their students, but it now looks like he is a pederast himself. I'm not surprised considering how rampant pedophilia is in their monasteries.
His holy phoniness!
This woman [Tenzin] is ridiculous, first, she said: "The moment I discovered Buddhism I knew this was my thing" now she wants to re-structure Buddhism. I like the response she got from the Dalai Lama, as she demanded changes, in another video -> "Hey, I am not the Buddha I am just a disciple, go ask him to accommodate your demands"
In my opinion Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo asks a very brave question. If anything, Shambala is de most modern of lineages in Tibetan Buddhism, so if anything is restructuring Buddhism it's the Shambala lineage. There's just no excuse for abuse, ever. If that's crazy wisdom, no one should receive it. Compassionate and examplary teachers is what we need. Not teachers avoiding difficult questions with diplomatic answers.
@@avalokiteshvaravalon This idiot [Tenzin] fist considered Buddhism the best thing since sliced bread, "Perfect" then comes in and wants to change the teachings of Buddhism. And I like what the Dali Lamma answered--> "I am not the Buddha, go ask him for changes!
@@giggles8458 Well, you kinda disqualify your position by calling a revered teacher an idiot, but I will try to provide a civil response nonetheless. It's pretty selective, for HH the Dalai Lama to not answer that particular question. He answers many questions in regard to the fundamental structure of the Tibetan Buddhist lineages, for example the one about Lama invitations in the West and its 'inevitably' connected incentive for expensive initiations. And then when it comes to abuse and violence he's like "I don't know what was said, go ask the Buddha for change". Bit easy, hey? He's sitting on a throne, literally. He is in a position of influence and power which he decides to use for many other occasions/questions/problems but he avoids this one. It's like the pope condoning violence and sexual abuse by priests. It's just unacceptable, and against everything Buddhism should stand for.
@@avalokiteshvaravalon
To enter a system of beliefs that one considers "the way" and then try to bring reformation in such an ancient system? She wanted to be a female Buddhist nun and use her gender to brake the system of the Buddhist beliefs in reference to their stand on this matter, going against Buddha himself, thus become a goddess herself.

GOOD POINT.
in French we call them "mal (ou pas) baisées".
I hardly ever heard about lamas violently raping disciples. 99% of the cases, assuming the stories are true, the women agreed to it, then later retracted their consent, or tried to possess their lama for themselves, or realize they've been fooled, and blame the man instead of blaming their own stupidity, therefore denying their own agency and responsibility in choosing who to fuck with and why.
