  • Acclaimed Irish playwright Brendan Behan spoke to Derek Hart fresh from Paris where the Theatre Workshop had put on his play The Hostage.
    He spoke about the dialogue in the play, his links with Paris and the French people, and how success affected him.

      Brendan lived 5 more years after he did that interview, he was a man of hope not despair ❤

    His manor seems surprisingly modern. It's like a contemporary interview made to look 60 years old.

      Brendan was very progressive in his outlook. Sadly he died very young at just 41😢

      Yes, you are right. This is probably a reflection of the restrictive nature of the media at the time. Up until sometime in the 1980s every voice on TV sounded a bit like this interviewer. If you look back on Yourube you will be shocked at how late this southern middle class dominance persisted. I would hesitate to say Behan was just a normal working class man as his talent, broad outlook and articulacy are far from normal.

    Borstal Boy is a good book, but Behan was an overhyped writer.
