One thing I like you mentioned that Maradona had compared to most of today's players, which is not mentioned often, is that the guy didn't 'act'. If you watch full games and not highlights, you'd notice that even after being hit, he tried to carry on as much as he could. No diving, no drama, no faking. He has played seriously injured countless times. I personally find that commitment admirable.

      @danielerizzi3172 Год назад

And it's important to mention that, when he was playing in Barcelona before going to Napoli, an opponent broke his leg (the bone of his leg), That injury alone would have ended many players career. Also the opponent took only a 10 games ban, this to let you reflect on how much hard was playing in that football era. His opponent was nicknamed "The butcher of Madrid" even before fouling Maradona.

Well, it's true that tackles were a lot more brutal but on the other hand defenders were in general slower and less athletic than nowadays. The backpass rule changed defenders a lot.

@@aleixvallejo7976 true the speed of the game is a lot faster now, but the offensive players was not protected by the ref. Just look at players like Maradona and Laudrup.... But it is Hard to compare Them to todays players

I am American, and have watched as much soccer (my apologies but we can't call it football, it would be too confusing) as possible. I am 73 yo so I have pretty much seen the history of soccer in the US. I lived in the midwest, so television was my main view. I do remember seeing Pele, and I thought he was amazing. Then I saw Maradona and I was just as amazed at his skill, but more amazed at his ability to take the ball full field and score almost at will. I know I didn't see him often, but he did it at least once every time, and I remember thinking, "how does that pudgy little guy do that?"

Maradona was the Michael Jackson of football.
He brought a completely different style into his craft. Such a technical, elegant, beautiful and harmonious style that no one had ever imagined previously. There was a BEFORE and an AFTER those people.
We now see all those pop stars breaking it down and it is part of mainstream stage presence. But Michael Jackson was the revolutionary genius that came up with this unseen and mesmerizing style that made him a global superstar like we never saw before or since.
Maradona is exactly the same. His level of technique and creative, elegant play fell into the world of football like a nuclear bomb. In a time where things were very conformist and standardized, Maradona absolute freedom of play and unlimited technical resources turned him into a REAL ALIEN.
And i will NEVER compare him to Messi. Messi is nothing like him. The only common points are their size, shirt number and on ball ability. That's it.
While Maradona was a creative center midfielder who wasn't at the end of most plays, Messi always played as a forward or winger that ended up for most of his career as finishing plays. Messi is a perfect player in the sense that he will always take the proper decision, execute at the right moment, perfectly immerse himself in the system that was created around him.
Maradona is the absolute opposite. Maradona was chaos. Maradona was the system in himself. He would keep the ball much more than Messi. Rush defenders most times. Lose possession more than Messi etc. But strangely enough, this humanity is Maradona's game, Vs the computational perfection of Messi approach, is what turns Maradona into the better player.
Why? Because no matter how many goals Messi scores, we all know that his lack of human presence is a turn off in terms of leadership. Maradona would have DIED in that field for that 1990 world cup. Maradona assuming the game and attacking players 1 vs 3 20 times a game and getting tackled by the neck and kicked down 30 times a game signals a lot to his team mates.
It essentially tells them that they can count on him for whatever happens. The result of this is a clear uplift in team spirit and performance. Only this way can you win leagues and European trophies with Napoli or make multiple World Cup appearances with a non favored Argentinean squad.
Messi would and HAS abandoned his national team because he got frustrated. He does have an horrible attitude when Barça is in a bad moment. His body language is horrendous in that sense.
In fact, in terms of motivation and capacity to raise for the occasion as a player and leader, i find Maradona much more similar to Cristiano Ronaldo than Messi. That's why Maradona said himself that Messi needed to be a but more like Ronaldo in terms of attitude during difficult moments.
In other words, no matter how much Messi and Ronaldo fill the stat sheets, they never had the ever lasting impact in how football is played that Maradona had. This image of the creative extremely skilled player who does it all and that every kid wants to be was FIRST SEEN in Maradona.
And let it be known that he did that in a time where refs gave him no protection whatsoever. These days he would win 5 red cards by half time. He also did it in horrible pitches. The level of control and ability he showed in potatoes field like pitches is absolutely unreal.
As such, the question is not "how would Maradona do in modern day football" but "would Messi, CR and Neymar be able to survive under those circumstances".
Neymar would probably roll back to Brazil after the first 2 tackles. Messi would not take that level fo physicality very well neither and i don't believe he would be able to produce anywhere the same level of football in those mine fields. I think Ronaldo physicality would translate the best. Specially this end of career Ronaldo that practically gave up the ball and focused in being the most perfect physical goal scoring machine.
I will not credit Pele ahead of those 3 because he players with super teams in Santos and Brazil national squad. Granted, he was the best of them but i can't measure his talents knowing he was never challenged. Santos always had 4, 5, 6 national team players and was destroying Brazilian teams in the 60s. I am not sure about that level but it surely wasn't Juve, Inter, Milan, Real, Barça, United, Liverpool etc.
Thinking back, the only guy i remember really having an impact on how his position was played from then on was Ronaldo R9. Even in terms of talent pre injury, he surely was Maradona like. Unfortunately, he was not allowed to display all his talent and was crippled by age 24 (still became world player of the year without his knees and with thyroid weight problems, which shows how insanely talented he was).
Finally, Maradona did the impossible with Argentina and Napoli. The other 4 players i mentioned did not. Well, maybe Cristiano wining the Euro with Portugal. But even he didn't turned a team of losers into an european power house. Maybe Messi and CR7 will be able to do something more until the end of their careers. Messi would have to win the World Cup. CR either the World Cup or the Champions League with that underwhelming juve squad.
Until then, MARADONA IS STILL THE GREATEST.

Loved your analysis! Through clips we can see how skilled Maradona was but sadly we don't get to fully appreciate how creative he was in his playing like a 10, for the team. Also, regarding R9, Maradona himself said that he would have been the best in history if his health had allowed it!

Thanks Diego!!! The world, the Argentines and especially the Boca Juniors fans are always going to love you! You were pure inspiration, the example that when you love something you do, you can create perfection. When you played ball you were always in the present moment. No external problem mattered. You were like a child ... happy, cheerful, passionate and wanting to have fun doing better and better. They say that we are creative beings parts of a whole, individualized on earth to experience that creative essence. You are a faithful reflection that we can create our reality, for better or for worse. You lived what no one else: to be venerated in life. Not everyone has the balance to endure that and you were no exception. Nobody is an example of anyone, although we are reflections so that others can define themselves and decide what they want and what they do not want to do. Thanks for being one of the best mirrors in every way! May you rest in peace and joy and until the next life! ❤
Gracias diego!!! No importaba ningun problema externo.

British friends, who always remember "the hand of god" A bit of history ... Diego with "the hand of god" were stolen .. We agree! I would also like to talk about the World Cup 66 quarterfinals England - Argentina (German referee) Germany - Uruguay (English referee) The German referee expels Rattin (Argentine captain) after 33 minutes said that he had insulted him, without knowing the Spanish language. England won 1-0 with a goal from Hurst in the 77th minute with arbitration that favored them throughout the game. If the robbery is done by the power of the Football organizations, from the shadows, is it more acceptable for a football player to do it in full view of the world?

Manit is so single sided. How is scoring with your hand any worse than any other foul. I have rarely seen any player who hit someon in the face. Like a certain nr 14 in the English squad in 1986 to a certain nr 10 of the Argentinian team going to the ref and say "Give me a card, I smashe dhim in the face." Scoring a goal in anyway is allowed as long as the ref allows it, just like any other foul is allowed. And virtually all players make fouls and very few will tell the ref if he missed it...

Thing is, in North America we have so many sports and so much time and money is invested in them all that no sole sport can stand out as THE game. I'd say soccer is a top 4 sport now since baseball has been losing fans for decades, it has the most young fans as well. In terms of fandom I think our only problem is that there's still not enough support for our domestic clubs (Atlanta, Seattle, New Mexico United and Forward Madison are the biggest exceptions) because a lot of American and Canadian have the mentality that they can only support European clubs

Maradona made team play great. Messi played in great teams. LIke this guy says: when you see the footage of rush after rush after rush you can see he is mostly out on his own. With Messi he is surrpounded by great players almost all the time. But I quit with comparing with Messi since regardless of how good Messi is, it makes Messi greateer than he really is. In reality the skillset, creativity, vision, passing, dribbling and incredible quick thinking makes maradona in a league onhis own.
He indeed rarely roled over the floor asking for cards, you can find footage where he is severly (red card worthy) kicked, stumbles and indeed falls but carries on only to be kicked by the next defender. He was not only quick on sprinting he was also extremely balanced and was very quick in standing up again.
No one compares to him and I hope some day we'll see someone like hjim. Times are against these rather rebellious types. Many footballers are taylormade for this era with no opinion of their own and with that, their individuality is gone and so I think is their mindset on the pitch. Not the fault of those players, but to my mind a fault of the times we live in.

He was more like 5ft 5 or 5ft 6.. very powerful thighs, low centre of gravity, samba like hips. Greatest ever magician with a ball. Messi has never inspired Argentina to success and has stayed at 1 club surrounded by top class players..Maradona inspired much lesser players and teams...not to mention having to endure the vicious tackles that defenders got away with and the poorer quality pitches.

Only player that comes close is Ronaldo R9, if it hadnt been for all the injuries he might have been the greatest but Maradona gonna have that spot atleast for now. Its was pure joy to watch Maradona play. Fortunately for me im old enough to remember watching him in Mexico world cup and while he was at Napoli.

🤔One difference that you can see with the way old-school soccer was played.. is that they were committed to the ball even when they were 'tripped-up' they kept going for goal..
Nowadays when men feel a tap on the ankles or shins ..they dive and simulate injury👀 lol.. its actually funny to see that when the referee blows the whistle because of a foul
it was more of a nuisance for both teams ..than a 'play advantage' to one team. Maradona kept going even when men were missing the ball and kicking his shins.. lol 😅🤣😂

Maradona was a great captain, just by his presence on the field he inspired his teammates to give 100%, it is said that before the Argentina-England match, Maradona was inspiring his teammates about how important that match was, since recently Argentina He had lost the war for the Falklands and there was a whole people waiting for that victory and he did not mind scoring that goal with his hand if he won that match and then he was not going to let anything stop him when he scored the second goal, greetings from Argentina

I live in philadelphia, soccer is huge in america but only as a youth/high school sport, as far as the mls is concerned, it does ok but pales in comparison to nfl mlb nhl nba, plus all the best players go to premier league etc.

US should try harder to retain young player and bring good player from around the world (not old player with big names that only goes to MLS to retire). Also try to compete in Copa America and Copa Libertadores ... you have it all to be a success in Futbol (not soccer), a great culture of sports, a lot of kids and money.

the growth of European Football(soccer) in the United States over the last two decades has been absolutely explosive. I've been a fan from way back. I was a casual fan in the 90's, my interest started with the 94 World Cup in the US, and then in the 2002 World Cup the US had a really nice run into the quarter finals and gave Germany all they could handle. That really turned me into a true die hard supporter of the USMNT and the sport in general. But I can't even explain how different it was back then to now. Back then, it was like a huge challenge to be able to watch the Champions League final. Today, its like, almost every EPL, Bundesliga, La Liga match is readily available on TV. Some of it is technology. Some of it is younger Americans just being more familiar with and growing to love the sport. Some of it was Beckham and Thierry Henry and other big name Europeans coming to MLS.
European football(soccer) is more popular with Americans 18-54 than baseball. That is just insane to think about.

He lowered a hand from the sky
    and stroking her hair
Roll and sign of the cross,
The caress of Jesus Made the miracle possible.
    Turned the network to ground
From the ball he made doves
    That landed their peace
    On Soledad Island,
    Erasing an absurd war.
Judas does not play this afternoon,
They expelled him as a traitor.
    And eleven apostles of Christ
    with their ears to heaven
    Consulting the Lord ...
    And Jesus said "I'm leaving,
I no longer speak of tactics
But I give you some advice,
    The ball always at ten
That another miracle will happen "
The ten whispered in his ear
    "Eternal bride, come with me,
I'll take you for a ride
That the whole world will see us
And they will know how much I love you The ball in love, Immaculate white skin, It was delivered without shame
To velvet soles Of his eternal great love. In filigree dance, They started their walk Talent overdose,
    turned rivals In cement statues.
    Great lover everywhere!
    Dance ten with his wife
    Caresses, kisses and hugs ...
    The ten making love
And the orgasm was a great goal.
Red the sun was screaming goal
    His rays arms raised
    And Jesus Christ jumping
    They celebrated the feat
    Mr. Ten and His Highness.
    Another flight of pigeons,
    Swift journey to the southeast,
    Argentine sovereignty,
    White and blue flags
    They adorn the Greater Malvina.
    Nobel Peace Prize,
    From Mexico to Fiorito,
    From Malvinas to England
    this crazy ten short
He filled the land with laughter.
    They are already beating laughter
    Seeing the compadre at ten,
    Generates latent laughter
His laugh in all the photos
    Of the fighting sons.
    And Jesus said "I'm leaving,
I'm not talking about tactics anymore But I give you some advice,
    The ball always at ten
    and another miracle will happen.
    Great lover everywhere,
    Dance ten with his wife
    Caresses kisses and hugs,
    Ten making love
And the orgasm was a great goal!
    For your miracles at hand
And the miracle of your feet
    For your miracles at hand
And the miracle of your feet.
Thank you very much Lord God!
Thank you very much Sir ten!

All the things that are common place today. Pele invented them. Nutmeg, roulette dribbling skills, check. Bend the ball free kick, check. Bicycle kick, check. Rebero kick pass, Dribble the team and score, check. Pele reimagined how the game was played and every followed his lead.
Also when Pele played the ball was at least 30% heavier. It wasn't until the late 70's that technology was developed to make the ball lighter using thinner leather patches and still maintain ball pressure

Office Bloke Daz Critics said this about Pele talent level back in the decade of the 60's. That's why his club team, Santos played games against the top European teams, not the scrub teams. Santos played the best teams in England, Spain, Italy, France, Germany. And had a winning record against them. This was to prove the team and Pele could challenge any team in the world.
