Uryu was supposed to play a major role in the TYBW Arc...but somewhere along the line, he mostly disappeared from view.
However, the TYBW anime is changing that. Uryu's character arc and his role in the story have been transformed so far, and we're only halfway through. The question is, has the anime fixed Uryu's character arc? Or if it's too early to tell, is it on the right track?

How are you feeling about Uryu's character so far in the TYBW anime? Are they improving on the manga, or is it still too early to tell? Let me know your thoughts!
It's still a set up
It's improved in every way imaginable, but Uryu is not "fixed" until he gets a proper fight. I want that Uryu vs Hashwalth fight extension in cour 4.
i just want to see him in a full fight and crush someone. want to his volstandig
I like the extra Ishida content but Uryu should have been the center of this arc. This will be controversial but I wish we'd of gotten a rematch with Mayuri where the latter died. It would have been cathartic and added some ambiguity. I love the added content. This is how to write filler.
Cannot give a complete answer yet. It's all been setup thus far, and I hope it pays off in a big way. That, and I am disappointed we didn't get an Ichigo vs Uryuu fight in Part 2.

It means Uryu is as powerful, and more clever, that the top tier of the Shinigami. Equal to Ichigo.
Not really that kind of makes no sense so you get trapped in your own weapon. When their power is their power.

Chad blocking Uryu's arrows should be noted, I can't imagine cousin Chad, who's existence was known by the Soul King himself since his own Soul King's birth, ever losing 😅
His fight against squad zero definitely shows how the anime is giving more prominent screen time.
@@Daiyvewell him getting such a power up from drinking yuhas blood makes sense. He quite literally unlocked his full potential on some dbz shit.
To me it makes perfect sense that uryu received such a massive buff when literally the soul king's son gave him a piece of his soul.

@@Daiyve I agree with you. I was just imagining a way they could have handled it while also emphasizing that drinking the blood was the power up.
Maybe something like uryu drinks the blood, then he goes into his soul similarly to Ichigo in his zangetsu moments( this would work well because it would give a deeper connection between Ichigo and uryu being rivals of sorts for tybw). Inside uryu soul/world, he has some cutscenes of his mother and grandfather before their passing( possibly the grandfather teaching him a Quincy power he couldn't understand at the time) , telling him important Quincy things. Then it all ends with the day of the auswahlen, showcasing something inside uryu protecting him.
Then boom he connects to that power that saved him that day. It cuts back to uryu kneeling in front of yuha with his eyes glowing/blunt veine thing he did.
@@Daiyve nice add ons man, I am honestly getting chills just thinking about it. Maybe throw in some cutscenes of the quincies being hunted and mayuri vs uryu( his letzt stil). Maybe him learning how to do it without losing his powers kinda like how Ichigo can now use his full powers without using final getsuga.
I really hope they do give him his vollstandig and make it look like his letzt stil but instead of a metal wing it's an angel wing made off out reishi
@@Daiyve right, thank you for reminding me. It would be so satisfying to see uryu prove that letzt stil isn't just an outdated and antiquated Quincy technique. You are right now that money that uryu is way too prideful to use vollstandig over his grandfather's technique. I hope he masters and evolves it . Your depictions of the form are amazing man. I kinda want to draw it now. The feathers being the arrow ends is a great touch thematically. With a flap of his wings he sends an overwhelming amount of arrows. Can you imagine if he could trade places with his arrows and just zip through the battlefield as if he had the speed force 😂. That would be so busted
If Kubo gives him another fight before Haswalth and maybe a holy form of sorts, then yes. Court 3 is crucial I feel, especially with Uryu facing off against Senjumaru’s bankai.

@@Daiyve if yhwach blood can make a dying bedridden man a mid captain level threat then yh it is understandable, plus uryu was already a captain level character in early tybw with his blood his captaincy tripled
He was in the teaser and he was clearly in the domain of her bankia so I think he uses antithesis to get out, beats her and free the others.
I just realized something google gave Uryu the same treatment as Chad in the Fullbringer Arc; an Arc just perfect for their character development. Except they're sideline for the protagonist or, in this case, the Soul Reapers.
Tbf even Ichigo himself was sidelined by the soul reapers in the TYBW arc XD

Uryu is my favorite character in Bleach, and I’m excited to see more of him in the anime adaptation. I’m not expecting too much as to not be disappointed, but there is so much possibility!
Uryu vs Senjumaru was so unexpected and if definitely looks like there will be a part 2
I can't wait to see what they added in season 3 it's already looking nuts
They really have improved upon Uryu's role in the TYBW anime. And considering that we are going to get even more anime-only content in the next two cour's, I am pretty sure his role in the final strech of the story will be a lot more fleshed out and satisfying.
Also, I really liked how they showed the Elites being present when Yhwach says that Uryu's power will be shown in time. It makes a lot more sense that he would have to prove himself to the other Elites, who are the underlings Yhwach actually values somewhat compared to the normal Sternitters, and it makes him being the one defeating Senjumaru a nice pay of to that set-up.
Uryu and his dad were the only Quincies we knew of for about 80% of the Manga's run. How Kubo managed to introduce two dozen new Quincies and yet barely have any meaningful interactions for the two of them is an achievement i'll give him that.
I agree with you. Ryuken was done dirty this entire arc. I expected at least one major battle with him presumably against hashwalth to help his son or even against ywach (even if he ends up losing).

@@Daiyve It would be really funny if Mayuri was just saying that to torture Uryu. That he had the picture of his grandfather taken after he found the corpse or something just for kicks.
Honestly, it's more in-character for Mayuri to experiment with their bodies. What I suggested seems more of an Aizen thing.
@@Daiyve I feel that Aizen goes a bit more personal. That he likes to understand his victims to mentally break them. Mayuri is not that personal with his taunts, I think.
However, I also think that Kubo regrets making Mayuri that much of a bastard in the Soul Society arc. He is still morally dubious afterward but not that purely evil. The fact no Quincy mentioned Mayuri's experiments, including Uryu himself, seems like a massive mistake. I truly hope the last two cours can fix that.

Lol, you said it. Considering all the situations Uryu has been part of with Ichigo life's moments (Fighting the hollows with him at the start of the story, him coming to intercept Yammy during first part of Ichigo vs Ulquiorra, having the privilege to also be present at the top of Las Noches and all that happened there, first to fly of the handle when hearing that Ichigo is content on losing his powers and getting to be in the same pocket space as Ichigo and Ginjo), I legit consider him as better friend than Chad is, arguably even his best friend.

Even though I always thought uryu was an underrated character and one of my top 15 fav characters I hope we get more expansion of him in the last 2 cours
You'r video is spot on BUT
Uryuu did use antithesis after his fight with Haschwald
He used it when shooting the still silver arrow. This is where antithesis collided with the almighty just as Haschwald feared, Ishida reversed any outcome in which his arrow did not hit the target.
Yhwah could willingly take the shot or infinitely try to avoid his fate yet failing since every time the outcome would be reversed from "target missed" to "target hit"
You could say every attempt to avoid his fate would... BACKFIRE 😂

I think what could have cemented the heel turn for Uryu is if he fought a character that we know before the Zero Division. Either take down a vice-captain or help in the takedown of a captain.

The 2 things I'm looking out for are:
An extension of Jugram vs Uryu and the explanation Kubo teased for how Uryu survived Aushwahlen. Anything else is just a bonus.
Hope they give us Ichigo vs Uryu. We need it, but more importantly I think the arc needs it.

Kubo created the antithesis of Itachi. A guy who's supposed to be a villain, but everyone understands that he's a good guy.
My major problem with Uryu is Chad's reaction towards Uryu's loyalty. Because I never doubt Uryu's loyalty. Therefore, I thought Kubo was going for some dramatic irony.
But then, any doubt, the character might have get squish.
With that been said I loved that the fight with the Zero division was expanded. Making Uryu's a more active entity in the story.
I feel like it has expanded on his story/arc more than the manga ever did since uryu hardly played any role the entire time until the end. He is gonna play even more of a role in cour 3 it looks like too.
I'm always wondering why Uryu's father is not involved in any of the Quincy's actions during this arc. I'm surprised that Yhwach allowed him to stay neutral.
Hopefully kubo allows Ryuken to do more in cour 3 and 4.

@@Ramsey276one At least gives us a moment where he tells Yhwach to f... off. That he doesn't care about the Shinigami and their war but he is not going to serve the man who killed his wife.
I wish that the anime can make Uryu more overpowered. For example, his Antithesis can mean that he has a natural counter or immune to all other quincys' power, or even soul king's power. That why he can survive Auswahlen and escape all mighty's gaze and sneak up Yhwach. Also he was not severely poisoned by hollow's reiatsu, which can also be tied to his "immunity". Of course this means the fight between him and Haschwalth's fight needs to be changed but that fight was bad and needs a re-write anyway.
Yeah they can keep some of the diaolgue mabye but the fighting has got to be better. please Kubo
Expanding the explicitly-shown powers of The Antithesis from "swapping damage around" to "swapping _things_ around" really does open up a lot of doors for Uryu to become one of the most cracked characters in the series. In the original manga, he only ever uses it to swap the damage taken by himself and Haschwalth in their fight, essentially fully healing himself while dealing big damage to his opponent. That is _by no means_ a bad ability on its own, but now we know that he can also use it to essentially pull off Boogie Woogie from JJK. Who knows what other applications there are for it? It really has become way more of this conceptual and semantic power, and I _love that._
Now we just need to know how spammable it is. Which... well, considering the other Schrifts, I'd say it's probably pretty spammable.
@@thomasthecoolkid7228 yeah, that swap things around ability can be really terrifying depending on where the limits are set. If he can swap enemy's internal organs, that would be a guaranteed kill for most characters. Or in a more conceptual sense, he can swap what an ability (like Almighty or auswahlen) targets, then he can fight alongside aizen to really mess with yhwach.
@zyao1043 anime will probably have Aizen and Ichigo lose to Yhwach and then have Ishida come in clutch for Ichigo like the manga but using his schrift instead of the arrow this time. I'm all for a 4 man battle with these 3 and Ichibei all fighting Yhwach together. That's my ideal scenario. Then Ryuken and Isshin can take on Gerard or mabye Haschwalth or something
@@kakashihatake1029 im okay with the arrow plot but Uryu needs to do more fighting than just that. My ideal scenario would be for Ryuken and Isshin to join the Yhwach fight to avenge their wives.
If Senjumarus bankai is not about fate, then I kinda feel her tactic to Gerard and maybe haschwalth was a shoutout to manga and the fight in anime will change completely.

Video idea. Comparing Uryu’s character journey through the Bount arc vs Ichigo’s journey through the Fullbring arc. People love one arc but not the other despite being very similar in nature.
I don't get how Uryu's glasses are never damaged in the entirety of bleach....like.....the man's been stabbed, slashed, poisoned, limbs broken and now seemingly killed but his glasses are never even cracked... That's quite amazing not gonna lie🤣🤣🤣

Things are looking up! As you've noted before, each of the main cast had an arc focused on them. They dropped the ball on Chad in the Fullbring arc. I'm hopeful for Uryu here.
Tbf the manga wasnt bad for uryu either, I'd even say he got it better than orihime in her arc too. The problem ofc was that uryu just didn't fight nor show up enough, so yeah, the anime fixing that and hope they keep doing It!
Every time I seen chad I always think about how painful blocking stuff with his shield must be, I mean it's literally his skin, he's basically just holding up his arm and tanking the attacks head on.
I need to see Uryu’s vollstandig. I am so, so hopeful that Senjumaru is an uninterrupted fight where Uryu takes the win using both his schrift and vollstandig, he’s one of my favorite characters and I think a moment like that would be so perfect for his character. If he doesn’t use a holy form in that fight (which he realistically needs, as it’ll help shorten the gap between him and Senjumaru) then hopefully the anime commits to an Uryu vs Ichigo fight and he reveals it there, that’d be cool too.

What if Uryu and Ichigo are actually the legs of the soul king 🤔🤔🤔 or possibly some other part of the soul king. That could explain why Uryu survived hollow poisoning and Yhwach and why Ichigo can wield so many different abilities.

Yes but does it make sense for him to defeat her? I hope they don't make it easy for Uryu to defeat a zero squad member, who has one of the strongest bankais. The zanpaktou creator himself suggested only her bankais can defeat the whole of the Quincy royal guard...

@WilliamJulienNkogheOlympio well yeah but like someone else mentioned Uryu could mabye use A to trap Senjumaru in her own bankai. I think that's the way to do it from a writing perspective

I wonder how long they'll keep up the Uryu traitor thing because I was thinking Haschwalths suspicions either come from Ichigo finding out his intentions through combat by connecting to how Gin's sword felt to him or something like that. Maybe Haschwalth senses that they both weren't fighting to kill and then began to become suspicious of his defeat of senjumaru. But I do believe the Ichigo vs Uryu fight is the best place to truly start the Uryu double agent plotline
I just hope it makes sense as to how Uryu will beat Senjumaru on his own. Her reiatsu alone should be large enough to negate anything Uryu can do. But even then if she beat Haschwalth, she should be able to beat Uryu since Haschwalth was beating Uryu.
Him discovering and reading those old books regarding the Quincy Shinigami conflicts served as quite the turning point for him. He learned a lot and got to see a far darker side to the war what with Yamamoto appearing as a demon from hell. He could not ignore history.
Him running away from Ryuken after he refused to tell him what he knew was honestly so funny, the Ishida men are so overdramatic I swear! XD
Although, I really like the artistic choice of having both Ryuken and Katagiri have scenes were their tears are shown in tandem with the rain, just a really nice way of connecting the two of them and how they both tend to suppress their feelings.
@@jrgenvellesen7800 Yes, Uryu's acrimonious relationship with his father certainly helped push him as well, but at least in the aftermath of the war their relationship has started to heal in it's own way, with Ryuken covering his education costs. Kanae would be happy seeing them prosper in this peaceful new world.
@@manuelacosta9463 Yes. Uryu and Ryuken has had a rocky relationship, but it is nice to know that it has started to heal after the Blood War. Ryuken might seem cold and bitter, but he is a good man at his core, which is seen through his relationships with Kanae and Isshin.
At some point in the video I realized Uryu is going thru what Gin did with Aizen.
Hey Mr Tommo I know this video is a few weeks old so you might not see this but I just want to say as a diehard Uryu fan it's so nice to see your character breakdown because he's such a laired character that was widely overlooked by the fans.
Idk about yall but I felt the slight animosity towards Uryu still exists in Haschwalth. Like jealousy and a slight distrust dispute what he tells other Quincy. Maybe it’s undertones written in or maybe that’s my own bias
I never bought uryu joining the sternritter in either version but am glad we get more of him in the anime.
I want to see Uryu’s Vollständig, even if it’s only for like a second. Him trying to use it but it doesn’t stay since he never trained with it before the invasion.

I personally hope that hes gonna have a big role in defeating her, but will not be able to do it alone. Senjumaru just simply showed an insane amount of power, even withour releasing the full of it, she was tossing with Uryuu. I get that auswahlen and all that, but he cant possibly beat her alone even with that, or it would just really undermine her if he can.
Uryu is definitely the character of all time.
When tybw anime came out, I was skeptical of the idea that there will be any real change in the arc but with the finale of part 2 I have great hopes. Ishida's rework is a must in this arc and so far it is really promising.

I think Uryu can visually become another MVP in TYBW.
Quincy seem to always act upon some petty pride but he can define what Quincy are in the eyes of everyone.
I want the anime to cover more of Ryuken's role as he designed the one tool to bring down Yhwach.
I think Jugram gonna show a different side,the moment yhwach's goes to sleep and the almighty power goes to him,I think is gonna change his personality,he's gonna be more arrogant,agressive(because now he can see the future and see uryu's betrayal).
It's so far much better than the manga in my opinion. I feel like that if Uryu actually takes down senjumaru, that'll solidify Uryu not only as a threat, but as a true enemy
it would have been dope if uryu had actually turned to support the vandenreich and then his arc in TYBW is coming to terms with quincy trauma and doing the right thing
Uryu traitor... I've never seen the point of this angle, not at this point of the story, not with the motives they gave us. What conflict can there be when the option is going against everyone you love, everything you've ever fought to protect? Why would Uryu ever do that? At no point was I ever sold on this.
HOT TAKE: tsukishima should have been a special threat, he is unpredictable, has the power/ability to change the course of the war with a single appereance and has the power to undo/defy the power of the King itself
For someone who believed that he was one of the last few surviving Quincies for most of his life, Uryu doesn't spend nearly as much time interacting with his fellow Quincy; safe for Hashwalt. I would have liked to have seen the Sternitters who were openly dissatisfied with Uryu's succession test his qualifications. This way Uryu would get a chance to prove that he's fit to be Yuha's successor by demonstrating his power against those who doubted him, and we'd see how his abilities compare to those who can take on Captains as well as hints of his Schrift.
I remember reading the manga weekly and really hoping Uryu would get to kill Mayuri before the war ended.

Once we get to cour 3 and 4 then we'll likely see but given how he's basically teased to be the one to defeat Senjumaru. I have high hopes. Though we do need to see Uryu getting a Volstandigg.
I'm loving everything added in about him so far. I'm excited to see what else is implemented. The wait is brutal.
Am I the only one who doesn't take the removal of Haschwalth's confrontation with Uryuu at face value? I mean, every other appearance they have, Haschwalth is basically threatening Uryuu with the consequences of crossing or failing His Majesty Ywach. He or Ywach even bring up Kanae, which just proves to me that they already suspect his potential true motive for joining up.
Basically, I feel the anime simply made Haschwalth's suspicion more subtle, which honestly fits his character more, given how close he plays his emotions to his chest.
I look forwards to the next parts and what changes and how it is executed to contrast the manga, since there will be some that hate it's different and others that welcome fresh ideas.
I love what the anime is doing so far. Not just with Uryu, but with everything. Hopefully they continue to exceed expectations and flesh out the already amazing TYBW
Uryu Ishida is my favourite character in Bleach and watching him in the Thousand Year Blood War anime adaptation has made me very happy, and I am very confident in the next cour.

I believe we will see a better display of the antithesis against Senjumaru, Uryu might use it to throw all the damage back at her
Something else I think really needs to be in Thousand Year Blood War is a trial arc for Ishida. (At the very least, mention of his arrest and trial by Soul Society) Depending on the context of what's going to happen next within the next couple of other seasons, it seems extremely likely that Ishida is going to land himself in a massive heap of trouble with Soul Society, even if in the end he did what he did as a means to ultimately defeat/help defeat Yhwach and Jugram. And while Ichigo can be the one to clear his name with a testimony, that testimony has to be told somewhere Soul Reapers have to weigh in on, as it still is official Ishida betrayed Soul Society and it would be extremely weird if he was just left off the hook for something so serious so easily (in a courtroom or something of the like) Maybe Orihime, Chad, hell maybe Pesche can all be character witnesses and have this time Uryū is under scrutiny be used as a way to re establish their connections with each other, unpack the things that needed to be said but we're never said, to forgive each other, and to give each other much more closure. Let's face it, if your best friend worked with a team that still wanted to kill you as well as kill the beings that are responsible for THE LITERAL BALANCE OF THE WORLD it's going to take A LOT to fix whatever was broken there, even if they find out it was for their benefit the entire time. The trial could be used as a way to give Uryū even more development and more value as a character, but yeah I just kinda find it weird how Uryū was able to betray Soul Society and get away with it in the source material.

Everybody always asks how Uryu survives but what about his father? How did he also survive?
His father is a pure quincy, so Aushwallen only kills mixed quincy like Uryu. Masaki was tainted with hollow, thats why she was also affected by Aushwallen

Actually I always knew Uryuu was joining Juha only to betray him later towards the end. Idk I just knew it back then that was the plot Kubo was going for 😅

It is headed in the right direction. All of his reasons for doing what he does in this last arc make WAY more sense than the original material. At least so far. I still want more fights and screen time for him
I would really like to see Uryu shine for once so it won't simply be a quick solve to end Yuha Bach.
Something I like about Uryu's involvement is that it feels like he has even the slightest connection to his fellow Sternritter. I know it's a low bar, but simply acknowledging Cang Du and BG9's existence humanizes both of them and suggests Uryu holds some influence. There's added comradery now with him and the Schutstaffel as they've now fought together and not just for show.
Think his grandpa was a sternnritter.
I mean, they’ve made huge improvements for Uryu so far, but we also have two whole cours left.
Kubo could still fumble Uryu’s character in that time, or it could be one of the greatest improvements over the source material in manga history.

Let me ask you captain kotestu , do you want to see an actual ichigo vs uryu battle , I personally don't care and just see that as filler , the whole drama between ichigo and uryu felt like a cheap knock off of naruro and sasuke . Ichigo and uryu fighting feels pointless to me because it was so obvious that uryu was a double agent and didn't actually betray them

We already know uryu won’t kill Ichigo. Even anime-only viewers know uryu wouldn’t completely betray his friends for someone like Yhwach.
So yeah, it would be pointless filler that only exists to look cool.

Squad Zero, is not Ichigo and friends. They killed Uryu's blood relatives--not Ichigo. Recall that Uryu was going into Hueco Mundo by himself, to save Orihime (a much ignored item which links him to Ryuken's wish to save Masaki).
When he found out that Ichigo was doing the same thing (WITHOUT Soul Society's approval) he joined up with Ichigo.
In some ways, Isshin's and Ryuken's story parallels Ichigo's and Uryu's. Both Uryu's and Ichigo's mothers are dead; Uryu loves Orihime, but Orihime loves Ichigo, is parallel to Masaki's relationship with Ryuken and Isshin. Ryuken and Isshin have a friendly, yet adversarial, relationship with each other. And so do their sons.
imo Soken's absence even in flashbacks was glaring to me, at least we had that one memory and payoff with Ryuken

Writting-wise the manga already did It pretty good. We got vital info on him and his family which is unique to him among the main cast members who We already knew upside down by the HM arc, his role in the arc was an interesting one, and him firing the plot arrow was fitting.
The main problem was that uryu appeared 1 chapter, then remained like 30+ doing nothing, which so far the anime has fixed! He goes to pick up Cang and BG9, He witesses their execution, meets with Ichigo (Which btw is elevated by the flashbacks and music that plays during the aftermath), aids Juha and ends the season taking part of the biggest battle of the arc.
Anime can still ruin It tho I doubt It. Seems like cour 3 will be even better for Him, The surgery and ichigo flashbacks are still on their way which gives more development to his character, and ofc He's fighting more, possibly against people as big as Ichigo and senjumaru. What concerns me is the lack of the tension between Him and Haschwalth in the anime, which the manga nailed perfectly, Their fight has TONS of potential and It's easily one of my faves in the arc, only lacking in the actual fighting part, which the anime better fixes.
So, as long as they don't ruin the great story and battle with Haschwalth, and actually expand upon the plot arrow, I think He got fixed.

So It’d Be Kinda Out Of Character For Him To Help Juha Complete His Plan & Invade The Soul King Palace To Destroy The Linchpin Of 3 Realms. He Didnt Even Help The Sternritter Fight Squad 0 After Juha Revived Them. He’ll Probably Be The Reason They Escape From Her Bankai, But I Don’t Think He’ll Out Right Kill Her

This is one of the rare instance that the anime is being better than the manga
The anime has been pushing Ichibe as much more of a villain lately, and I'm wondering if maybe Uryu legitimately believes in Yhwach's cause and that the Shinigami are evil...But only in regards to the Zero Division. It's possible his goal is to destroy the Zero Division no matter the cost, then destroy Yhwach. The only problem with this theory I see is that at the very least we know Ichibe will return quite easily. That'll be pretty embarrassing after everything Uryu has done.

Yeah unfortunately a lot of plot points gets rushed due to Kubo's injuries and editorial mandates, I bet Uryu's role was something Kubo really wanted expanded on
I also hope they expand on Ichibe and Yhwach fight not necessarily something dramatically huge but at least more than Ichibe getting One-Shotted after Yhwach activates the almighty

I honestly never liked or understood the trope of the "good guys" fighting each other.
I found it especially lame in the Naruto anime because of how gratuitous it was.
I really hope Kubo doesn't give in to fans that want that level of villainizing a main character just to have a more gratuitously violent fight between friends
I've loved everything they've done so far with uryu. I think that uryu is going to use the antithesis on senjumaru and trap her inside her own bankai. At least that's my theory so far.
I just hope Taguchi and Murata quickly fix their mess if they are not gonna be replaced. They just dont know how to balance creativity and being loyal to the artstyle of the manga. Murata's storyboards sucks, and Taguchi keeps on pushing his aesthetic choices when he himself cannot stay put and focus on the series.
