    I always thought that pre-time skip, when Hitsugaya's bankai petals popped, he physically couldn't take the power surge. So not necessarily a BANKAI failure but more a HISTSUGAYA failure. So it doesn't really make Kubo's statement controversial at all.
    Similar to Kenny's bankai. The bankai didn't fail, Kenny's body did. Also, Byakuya's shikai AND bankai got a massive power up simply from being put thru the pools in the Royal Palace. So it seems that any shinigami can increase the output/capabilties of the Zanpakto by simply having a stronger/adept body. Another point, in the final battle with Yhwach, Ichigo quite literally says he can't yet deal with all his powers at the same time and he needs to find a round about way to even activate it.

But hitsugaya vastly outstrips all of his contemporaries in exponential growth, even the other genius types relative to him in power like gin and byakuya. They were just stronger initially with higher battle iq. He could totally neg byakuya end of series though, assuming he gets to use his true bankai and isn't bombarded by a billion razors. He had plenty of qualities and great abilities to be used, but unfortunately his character was not greatly touched on throughout the show, other than his leadership. However, Kubo did fail to give a lot of the characters a solid amount of time to develop but I still believe Toshiro is a great character (and my second favorite). His team up with Kenpatchi and Byakuya against Gerard was awesome! So overall, he does lack great development but he's a fine great character compared to most of the others.

Before he perfected it he wasn't able to hold on to his Bankai long enough for it to complete, long enough for all the flower petals to fall.

  • @TravisAxel
    @TravisAxel Год назад +32

    I think its interesting that you point out when Hitsugaya became zombified his powers became unshackled. Its an easy thing to overlook but when you really think about it the good guys probably restrain themselves in combat a good bit. Much like Superman the good guys are always cautious not to let loose too much or the collateral damage will end up interfering with the core mission. Thats why in the early days they had the limiters placed on them when they first entered Karakura Town. So this dead version of Hitsugaya was relentless and couldnt give a shit about destroying landscapes or harming allies. Even if it was a negative moment we got to see his power.
    On another note I always considered Hitsugaya to be a pretty weak Captain before the Thousand Year Blood War. Many experienced Captains generally start battles with Shikai and eventually use Bankai as a last resort but Hitsugaya went straight to Bankai for most of his battles. It was as if Hitsugaya was too weak to keep up with his opponents and used Bankai to keep pace with his enemy. However the TYBW arc turns this flat on its face because he does actually keep pace with the Quincy with his Shikai. On top of that he manages to find a new level of power with his Bankais Adult form and manages to survive Gerards assault while appearing like he was an equal asset in battle to Byakuya and Kenpachi. And that is without Royal Guard training, that should be impressive enough.
    So his overall performance is pretty haphazard but he develops quite nicely in the end. He really seems to be a completely different person from the Hitsugaya from Fake Karakura Town.

    I think Hitsugaya vs Rukia is an interesting study of mundane vs magic in the Bleach universe. Rukia's temperature manipulation is a very mundane type (able to freeze by temperature change and affect the world through such sudden, drastic changes) while Hitsugaya's is heavily on the magic side (dragon motif, able to freeze what isn't a state of matter such as light or, presumably, reishi, ability to nullify other abilities through ice in a way that isn't "the other guy's dead so he can't activate it anymore", etc)

How each captain obtain their bankai and their inner world would be amazing in further developing their character and seeing how zanpakuto sprits can further interact with their wielder. Hitsugaya and his ice petals are probably something that him and his spirit agreed upon to limit his powers until he's ready to use them. Toshiro is a lot stronger than he appears in the series based on his Zombie fight like you alluded to. It’s kind of like when Ichigo goes full hollow. They both are as strong as they appear in those forms all the time it’s just their disposition and worldview prevent them from fighting at that potential while in their normal state of mind. Hitsugaya seems to be held back moreso than Ichigo though based on his lack of experience and killer instinct which is kind of strange considering he’s obviously much older than Ichigo and, being a captain, should be ruthless when facing enemies of Gotei. Also crazy that Toshiro while fighting Aizen could just flash freeze all around him Bambietta style and if he hit KS it would render the illusion null and void. That ability gives him the capability to beat any shinigami or arrancar by just flash freezing their zanpakuto rendering them unable to activate their powers.

It's all speculation on everyone's part. If nothing else it suggests that he just can't handle the power it gives, and thus it doesn't technically end, but such a rush of power hurts him and maybe takes him out of the fight. So the aarancar wasn't exactly right when he said it represents how much energy he has left, and thus it doesn't contradict either of them.

      He always has had a strong connection with his Zanpatou, unlike Ichigo, Renji, and Byakuka, which were shown to have, although in different ways. He has good levels of spirit pressure, so Hikafune's aid would be minimal. His physical issues would not have been fixed by the hot springs as those are directly connected to his age, so really, the only real aid he would get would be Oken clothing... which wouldn't have factored much for the fights he was in.
      Really, for him to progress any further, it is just widening his skill set and preping his body to handle his full potential.

      To put it in perspective, Byakuya and Kenpachi got special training to become the strongest captains at the end of the war while Toshiro only did normal average training and is standing at the same level as them
      Toshiro with Squad 0 training would probably be in the same ballpark as CFYOW Kenpachi give or take as CFYOW Kenny is just TYBW Kenny with at most 6 months of training + Kenny’s infamous revived from near death boost after the Gerard fight

      Fullbring Bankai Ichigo had enough reiatsu to damage Yhwach and blow off his Blut, and Byakuya should at the very least have similar Reiatsu to Toshiro, if not more, at the beginning of the war. Hot springs are for healing and purifying the spiritual energy.
      You also didn’t take into account the physical training that Oetsu and Ichibei give
      At the very least, Toshiro should’ve probably gotten a boost proportionate to the boost that Byakuya got as well as being able to use his Mature Bankai at will, and considering the fact that he was already on the same level as Byakuya and Kenpachi at the end of the war, with a proportionate boost to what Byakuya got, he would’ve been head and shoulders over even Byakuya and Kenny

      @jocoolshow Honestly, I don't think Byakuya got much of a boost overall. His main boosts were better control of his Shikai... which Toshiro already had, full access to his bankai (one move), which is adult Hitsuguya and really the Oken cloth. Renji and Rukia got physically stronger under Ichibe because they were getting used to that level of spiritual pressure, which other captian level fighters (Ichigo) had no issue with. We know the baths gave Ichigo a physical buff, but honestly, not the full extent, nor do we know how much his soul king prep training buffed him either. Both Ichigo and Renji had their full potential held back from them via their Zanpatou spirits which doesn't apply here. So honestly knowing Toshiro already has full access to his bankai (via timer mechanic) arguably little he could develop physically without aging and the arguably negligible buff to his raw spiritual energy being off the table I don't think he would grow much or at all from Zero division training in under a week.

    His Bankai is a bit like Ikkakus. In that it takes time to fully activate.
    The difference is that prior to TYBW, his body could not take the Bankai fully activating.
    In fact, what if he created those petals to _actively delay_ it fully activating? He still had his "training petals on" so to speak.
    On the other hand, maybe it is like a frozen mirror of Yamamotos Bankai? In that it is too destructive for him to control? In every battle he used it, collateral damage was a consideration.

I think Tommo said it a while ago but it almost feels like he’s supposed to be the series’ second protagonist, told from a different viewpoint of course. Toshiro is extremely powerful and underrated. Post Zombie, Toshiro’s Shikai was able to stop a full on punch from God Size Gerard. The same Gerard that was able to one shot people as strong as Renji and Rukia (who scale to Bazz B) by literally blowing air at them, and was strong enough to sway away a causal Byakuya’s Bankai petals.
    Toshiro’s Shikai ice is strong enough to stop the force/momentum of this version of Gerard.
    In his Immature Bankai, he’s fast enough to fight Gerard 1 v 1 and not get tagged (the same Gerard that was fast enough to hit no eyepatch Shikai Kenny when Kenpachi was trying to dodge)
    In terms of physical strength and durability he’s able to parry/block hits from God Size Gerard and no eyepatch Shikai Kenpachi and take hits from God Size and Vollstandig Gerard that were meant to kill
    In terms of AP, with a fully charged attack (that’s not amped by Tenso Jurin) he’s got enough reiatsu/power to freeze God Size Gerard to the bone, with this Gerard being relative to or above Shikai Kenny in terms of strength
    Mature Bankai Toshiro’s physical strength with a one handed casual swing is high enough to one shot the Hope Sword Vollstandig Gerard who’s Miracle Amped by Bankai Kenny’s power. We know Spirit Weapons in Bleach can block attacks that can one shot the user, so Toshiro’s physical strength is one shot levels over a Vollstandig + Bankai Kenny amped Gerard. Toshiro’s durability scales to his strength, but feats wise he can survive this version of Gerard trying to crush him. Speed wise he’s able to solidly outpace this version of Gerard and hit him before Gerard can even let off attacks of his own. And AP wise, he can freeze this version of Gerard to the bone as well as negate hax stemming from the Soul King’s Heart itself
    And on top of that he has the stats to fight Final Form Gerard as well who’s ridiculously stronger than Vollstandig Gerard Miracle Amped by Bankai Kenny
    You could say he’s stronger than any other captain in the TYBW and is second to Kenpachi in CFYOW, since even that novel considers Toshiro (and Byakuya) strong enough to assist Ichigo with a threat that was perceived to be something Ichigo couldn’t beat on his own, and Narita purposefully wrote Toshiro out of the conflict with Hikone

Aging him is a cop-out, because it makes it look like he can age and de-age his body so easily with no repercussion. If we ever get a full on Hell arc I think there is a possibility he could still take the position even if Kyoraku, Kenpachi, and Byakuya make it through as strong as ever.
    All that said Kubo's overall handling of Hitsugaya was very weird. On the one hand he got more screen time than most of the Captains and was clearly one of the most powerful Captains at the end of the series. Yet with the exception of his fight against that kid in the Fullbring-Arc, everyone of Hitsugaya's victories and feats were largely undermined one way or another by Kubo's writing choices. imo when hitsugaya reaches his peak he will be on another level. Only behind yammamoto imo and he will surpass the rest. It only makes sense with fire and ice. He will be the next head captain and even shunsui says he will surpass himself in the future. I think he will be an all time shinigami only after royal gaurds, aizen, ichigo, aizen

    I feel like Toshiro gets downplayed a lot because he never really kills anyone, but despite that I've always thought it impressive that despite being the youngest captain he always seems to go toe to toe against big important threats.

      Kill? he doesn't need to kill, he just needs a solid win against real tough opponents..
      sadly, he never get to reach that latter part.. He always lose in a battle, kinda acting like a captain level punching bag.. and when he does win, it's always against "meeeh" opponents like cang du..
      like who tf is cang du? that guy's trash..
      at least with Byakuya he won against 3 mid ass sternritters alone while Hitsugaya barely win against 1 mid sternritters.. hence why there's a demand to put Byakuya on at least top 3-4 even tho i cant see how Byakuya could ever defeat Mayuri, but that's a different discussion.

    Could it be that toshiro said that his bankai would not fail because he thought that he was too weak for his completed bankai due to the damage he would receive before the TYBW and that's why he says that he never said that the bankai would fail rather he thought he was the one failing and mastering his bankai was almost similar to strengthening his body enough to handle the bankai 🤷thats why his bankai forcefully ages him too

    Ive never understood the line Hitsugaya says about not liking his adult form. Its essentially him being forced into an adult. Does he not want to grow up? Seems like an odd thing to say regarding a more powerful state. Guess he doesnt like having to be forcibly aged to handle his full power which could be understandable since he could take it as hes not mature enough to handle it

  • @SleepyKurisu
    @SleepyKurisu Год назад +1

    I feel like adult hitsugaya, currently and when he eventually gets to that age could arguably be stronger then at least Byakuya depending on if he can freeze Senbonzakura's petals meanwhile I think Zaraki is just too strong for Hitsugaya's Ice to hold him back and the perfect captain keeping the top and below balanced is always Mayuri because his new bankai is a problem for the bottom ranks but he could easily be beat before getting a chance to use it by the top ranks

    Well, based on the attack animation in brave souls (assuming brave souls to be canon to any extent) toshiro's completed bankai is strong enough that just taking a step freezes everything around him on a scale that makes rukia's bankai look like childs play

  • @jolodefensor4509

    I think that Hitsugaya already has access to this form from early on, but his body is incapable of handling the power, much like Rukia's where it damages her. Which is why through training, this is what he and Hyorinmaru kind of decided to do in order for him to handle the power of his completed bankai.

    Honestly I feel like he is strong enough to potentially be placed in the special war powers. Sure he is still young now, but he's a captain for a reason and his fully matured hyorinmaru was to able to freeze Gerald and all of his abilities in its track. Like that’s a big deal. Hell even Shunsui said he'll surpass in 100 years. I feel like it’s downplayed due to the fact how less experienced he is with his power and tends to hold back a lot

    • @nobleactual7693
      @nobleactual7693 Год назад +3

      I would disagree. The criteria to be a special war power is to have a trait with the potential to turn the tide of the war, in favor of the Shinigami. Ichigo had his limitless potential, Aizen had his unbelievable reiatsu, Ichibe had his vast knowledge, Urahara had his incredible resourcefulness/innovation, and Kenpachi had his immense strength (I would argue Kenpachi's strength really didn't do much to turn the tide of the war, though I suppose effortlessly destroying a meteor that would flatten Soul Society could count for something).
      What trait does an adult-Hitsugaya have that could change the course of the war? It's true that he is now a powerhouse with a broken, power-cancelling ability, but I don't really see what "trait" he would have that would elevate him to a special war power.

    • @0eyes

      @@nobleactual7693 Kenpachi killed the most Sternritter and Yhwach probably knew that he didn't have shikai or bankai at the time, so he's dangerous.

    Hitsugaya power was never the problem. It was always his immaturity. His body is too immature to utilize his full power and his mental immature to get the job done with his power.
    Zombie Hitsugaya shows you how deadly he could be wasn't so immature emotionally.
    Hitsugaya power up is going to be his ability to mature and that's what you saw during his fight with Gerard Valkyrie.
