    I honestly feel that the Netherlands is a severely underrated civ, they are just decent overall, and their bonuses help them get any victory they want. I feel they are extremely flexible and I would like more people to appreciate them. I would enjoy seeing you analyze them and teach people how nice they are.

      Netherlands are one of the easiest civs to go bonkers as a noob. the ability to give theater squares, campuses, and industrial zones +2 for being next to a river is so powerful. You can easily do special district triangles on a river and get all of them to a +3. There is no reason to never have an industrial zone bellow +5. (Aquaduct, river, any other district)

      @@zierrana That's a good way to put it. The frequency with which you drift off matters, too. Everyone gets absorbed in thought and pulled away from whatever they were doing if they're thinking about something important (e.g., a breakup). ADHD is when that happens all the time, no matter what you're doing - and you can't really stop it, no matter how much you want to focus on the task at hand.
      Source: I have ADHD and I'm trying really hard to be an adult.

    • @Drekromancer
      @Drekromancer 3 года назад +3

      @zierrana Side note: that "all I see is pieces of corn floating around and multiplying" thing is such a mood. Restless minds really make the weirdest visuals when they run on autopilot. In my daydreams, nothing stays the same shape for more than a second before it mutates. But it's cool to know that it's a common phenomenon. :)

    I played the Khmer recently and they were fun, city planning has always been the real spice of the game for me. I love the flavour of the civ, and extra food plus housing and amenities to support the population is useful, even though growth isn't as crucial as in Civ V.
    That said, the bonuses rely on two fairly niche districts that are competing for space with other districts and workable tiles. Rivers already give major adjacency to commercial hubs (although gold is probably the least valuable yield on a 1-for-1 basis) and are a prerequisite for many wonders. You may want to place a dam on a flooding river, or use the fertilised tiles for really nice farms, or maybe you have other high yields there. As you mentioned, the farm bonus from aqueducts may also compete with the adjacency bonus for industrial zones (pretty much the only reason I normally bother with aqueducts if I already have fresh water).
    The Prasat relic spam is super powerful for tourism, but I absolutely hate the suicide mechanic because it relies on the cooperation of your opponent. The AI will certainly oblige, but I dislike it on principle even if I more or less only play single player.

      Not too sure how to help explain Magnificence Catherine, since I haven't played as her yet (I'm guessing the idea is to plan theater squares around luxury resources and incentivize building more Châteaux, I'm not sure about the timing of the Court Festival projects) so I'll focus on the base Catherine. Catherine as the Black Queen gives her additional visibility with every encountered civilization along with a free Spy (and extra Spy capacity) with Castles. All Spies start as Agents with a free promotion.
      This additional visibility can be considered a +3 combat bonus, to help with domination victories. Having extra spies means more opportunities to steal great works, gold, techs, or otherwise cause mischief. I would build the intelligence agency as my tier 2 building (+1 spy and my spies get better) and would aim for the Owls of Minerva (even more spies and will gain more rewards from offensive spy missions) if Secret Societies is enabled.

With the governor who can faith buy districts it was crazy. My people were so happy that chinese cities just joined my empire one after another and I won a cultural victory without even trying. TLDR: Khmer are awesome!

    Hey potato. I had a great religious game with russia. I had a huge tundra in the south and lots of 6+ lawras (tundra faith + some woods/districts). Together with the +1 production the game was ridiculously easy. At the end I was producing 600+ faith per turn. (also with the void singers which are quite handy for all the russian great artists)

    My first sub-300 turn win was a Culture Victory with Khmer using the relic tourism strategy. Definitely fun.
    Khmer is also the absolute "tall" civ, I ended up having only 6 cities but with 20+ population each, and I could easily loyalty filp my neighbors during a Golden Age.

    Love this! Would be thrilled to see Tamar/Georgia ... I think it’s another highly underrated Civ that lots of people think is bad just because so many others say they are.

      with the secret societies gamemode added in, Tamar becomes insanely strong. If you have the voidsingers and a strong faith output, as long as you keep 1 or 2 aggressive civs in the game and keep declaring protectorate wars, you can carry yourself to a science victory without even building a single campus. I played as her for the first time 2 days ago and I won a science victory, one of the least viable options as her.

      I mean, he played them for his birthday stream specifically to make things harder since he thinks they are bad. I don't think he's going to be signing their praises after saying they are the worst civ.

    • @AndrewChumKaser
      @AndrewChumKaser 3 года назад +1

      The issue that tamar has is more or less two factors:
      1. The protectorate war bonus is way, way too situational to ever come up, no matter how strong of a reward it is. The issue is it requires the *other players* to be doing something, and on top of that tends to be something most players rarely do. Additionally, unless you have the grandmasters chapel, there's no way to translate faith into the military power you need to go to war.
      2. The unique walls are good in theory, but are too much of a commitment to be worth the time and effort to get upgraded. Yes, the half cost on top of the bonus from the civ itself and the limes card offset this, but it's still a later game tech for a rather mediocre bonus to tourism and faith at that point.
      Everything else about Georgia is decent, but nothing special. The golden age bonus is by far their most useful ability, but it's not a reliable strategy because it tends to hang on outside factors such as spawn location, what neighbors you have, and what they do. Compare that to even a mediocre bonus that always has an impact such as China's bonus, and the math isn't going to check out.

      Andrew Kaser I agree the protectorate war bonus is hard to count on, though on Deity AI I can use it occasionally, but it’s just not reliable like you said. I think Georgia is best when she can get a religion with the belief that gives her an extra envoy to city-states if it’s of her religion. Combined with the Policy that does the same and her first envoy can be 4 or more (depending on secret society and other factors) and then at least 2:1 after that. It’s not toooo hard to get Suzerainty of every city-state worth having. And definitely I get the Grandmaster’s chapel. With high faith income that scales well, insta-buy armies, you can use Crusade to do domination, or go for culture or science with as much or as little war as you want. Get defender of the faith belief for defense if you don’t want to be aggressive.
      Plus, a big, big benefit not immediately obvious, but all the Suzerainties give you gobs of diplo power which I sell to the AI for lots and lots of gold. On Deity against the Al I have had 300-500 gold per turn coming in just from selling diplo by late game. That can buy you a lot of whatever you need for the victory you are going for. On the golden age bonus, once you get your first golden or heroic age, you should be rolling into golden ages for the rest of the game. Maybe I have just been lucky, but it’s been my experience in a half dozen games I have played with her.
      I get why people might not like her, if she doesn’t work with a playstyle Someone prefers - particularly if you don’t care about the city-state game. But if you invest in the right things early i think she is a really strong and versatile mid-to-late game Civ. That’s why this Khmer Video made me think of Tamar - the first time I tried both of them, I just could not figure out how to use their particular bonuses and gave up on them. I rediscovered Georgia but had not realized any of what a potato said about the Khmer, which was very eye-opening. I wouldn’t claim Georgia is top-tier, but IMO much better than she gets credit for. Ironically, perhaps, I almost never go for religious wins with her.

    I know that you do not really do mods on this channel, but there was a great one I found which gives an aqueduct replacement, and gives a 10% production boost per 10 pop towards buildings and wonders. Works super well as a tall civ. Take a look even if you dont make a video on it!

    Really enjoyed this deep dive into a civ I have yet to try. I know I'd love to see more of these. Personally I'd love some more insight into the Maori, but also would like to know how to handle Scotland and Australia

    I do indeed watch Spirit Of The Law videos! They're good stuff. As for what Civ you should do next, I'd be very interested in a breakdown of another Civ that's seen as broadly underpowered like, for example, the Cree.

    Love this, especially the graphs. Smells suspiciously like someone is working hard on their content... ;)
    Depending on your difficulty level picking up a few cities, or even your entire timed push, can be boosted further by getting the Crusade belief in your religion. +10 combat strength is deadly in most players hands, and plenty of AIs too xD

    I think the Khmer were the first Civ I finished a game with, and you're right about the religion game, you generate an insane amount of faith with them. So much I was just printing waves after waves of missionaries. It was really kinda silly.

    Wow, I've been doing good as Khmer. But holy crap, I've been missing so much. Mainly, aqueducts. I've hit uselessly huge population without them though... One thing Potato didn't mention, but should be obvious: Since all your holy sites are on rivers, your best mountain spots are still available for campuses.

    I played Khmer for the first time a while back when I was hunting for the 'Wat is Love" achievement... now I can't put them down. Totally agree, on the surface they look quite underwhelming, but the potential for all their bonuses to interlock is so powerful and pleasing to do.
