I believe garderobe is another term for ‘dressing room’ or occasionally ‘wardrobe’. My mother used to call the room which adjoined her boudoir the ‘garderobe’. Might have changed though!
Great video I confess when I first saw the title "Lounge Suit" I immediately thought WHAT! He will be discussing polyester leisure suits? But now after watching the video I have a clearly and much better understanding of the terminology thanks for a precise and wonderful explanation!
Thank you so much for mentioning what the equivalent ladies attire would be. I am very interested in learning the women's counter parts to classic style dress.
I’m running in the wrong circles. I’m a middle aged man and I’ve never been invited to or even heard of an invitation with the words lounge suits. Living in Florida our clothing options are limited. It’s extremely casual here. Too casual generally for my preference. It’s the oppressive heat. You can never wear a tweed suit here or a heavy sweater. Maybe once or twice a year. Big on cargo shorts in this state. People wear T-shirt’s to fancy restaurants. Ugh.
Adriano Oda Yamada what I’m saying is what it is. Maybe you can understand it if I say it again differently. People dress much more casually overall here. Understandable because of the intense heat. I never ever thought it was ok to wear shorts while working. But after a little while down here I came yo understand it’s ok outdoors. Cops do it so ok. Because there are two seasons hot and ridiculously hot you can’t wear about half of what men can wear in a temperate zone. You also see people go to events like evening weddings in khakis. It’s much more casual. You’ll never ever need an overcoat. Men wear sandals and other horrible footwear. Yes you can wear linen suits and very lightweight stuff but even then if you walk a city block you’ll be sweating. Hope this clears things up. Hate is a very strong word.
If must wear shorts, you can always wear them with a sport jacket. BTDT ages ago when more sensitive to the heat. Point is, just because everyone else dresses sloppy doesn't mean you have to. Lots of fabrics for jackets and pants that are good choices for tropic climate. I am always over dressed here, especially in the summer when folks do as in Florida and wear T-shirts and sloppy shorts into nice places. Currently working in a light assembly factory and wear slacks, button shirt, nice sweater, and a windbreaker as needed. Myself here in Phoenix am comfortable in a wool suit even in Summer, but a light two button sport coat and cotton slacks, not my heavy wool double breasted suit (though have worn but had to take the jacket off outside).
Adriel Rowley you’ll never see me wear a jacket and shorts. I think it’s ridiculous look. My main point is that non stop heat limits choices. It’s dry in Phoenix. Very different here. I do like to be casual in this heat but sloppy and not thought out ? No. I miss cooler climate and 4 seasons. The other point is that it’s overly casual here. Cargo shorts are huuuge. That’s all.
Only limits your choices if you allow it, mind over matter. I been in the South when 90* and 90 percent humidity more than once, am still in pants and long sleeve shirts. Plan to move there, just working on gathering the resources, so can be near family. About adjusting your body to the temperature. Miss having three seasons, so can kind of understand. Life doesn't always put us where meets all our desires, just have to work with what we have.
Thank you, very informative. Could you please make a video about mixing different pants from jacket and your observations? For business, I often wear either plain dark wool pants with a more friendly slightly lighter herringbone jacket, or a dark jacket with plaid pants. My reasoning is that a suit, in business (not social situations) tends to prevent human connection and puts people on the defensive. It's simply too formal on day-to-day if you want people to actually tell you what is really going on and truly get things done, on a daily basis. I'm in the actuarial field. I'd love to hear your opinions and theories on strategic downdressing to make people feel less intimidated and building long-term business relationships that are open, rather than on guard and defensive.
Firstly, Sven, you produce the most amazing videos that have helped me on many occasions to dress in the right manner. Secondly, I am going to be travelling quite a bit for my new job and I want to wear a suit whilst travelling but I was wondering what I should wear and/or how to style it? Any way that you could help out would be appreciated.
I’m going to start calling a suit a lounge suit on invitations to see what creative things people come up with. ...it sounds like you’re describing cocktail attire. Is there difference between cocktail attire and lounge suit?
There is a distinct historical trend of more casual clothes (e.g. the lounge suit, the tuxedo) coming to be considered more formal and replacing or displacing more formal versions (e.g. morning suit, white tie and tails). This worries me because current modern "casual" is basically sweatpants and a t-shirt and hoodie 😱
I'm a big fan of wearing waistcoats, but I don't have the matching waistcoat for my go-to navy suit. Would a mid-grey odd waistcoat paired with the suit be appropriate for the lounge suit dress code?
You mention this is not a time for an ascot. I’d love to see more about best ways and occasions to wear an ascot. I think ascots are under appreciated and underused today! Also can you talk more about shirt colors and face shapes or other factors dictating which color shape. I had never heard about face shape making a difference.
Hi, I'm graduating from university and I'm not sure what to wear underneath the gown at the graduation ceremony. I was wondering whether you had any suggestions for such an occasion.
Why do you have such an aversion to button-down collars, i.e. what makes them casual? I'm a huge fan of them as they keep the collar stiffly in place without the need to starch or use a tie bar and they ensure that the collar does not come with too much spread.
Speaking of embassies though, Herr Schneider, for reasons too complex to explain in a RUclips comment, in parts of the Mideast it is seen as uncouth to wear a necktie in less formal environments.
If you never attend dinners/events with a dress code -- and your work is also completely casual -- you could still just take you wife out to dinner (example) and dress well. Just make sure you pick the most suitable place you can. Being the best dressed is nice, but wearing black tie at a Red Lobster will just make you clash and look like an idiot. Also, you could join a club or a fraternal organization like The Elks, Odd Fellows, Masons -- they still have formal events and rituals, although check as some lodges have gone more casual.
I love learning about these things but after .. oh i dunno, 7-8 years of this, I realized that most people will spend their entire lives not ever needing (for example) a tux for a black tie event, or will need to know the intricacies of when to wear a white dinner jacket/tux. Still, it is nice to know I can just come to this channel and search for these topics. I am curious though - how would one manage to require this sort of esoteric knowledge? The most formal event most people will experience in their lives is a wedding and i'm sure 99/100 the dress code will just require random dinner jackets, instead of males matching in black.
You state that oxfords, semi-brogues or derbys are acceptable -- showing a pair of long-wings as your derby example (I'd call them blutchers or just long-wings before calling them derbys, but..) Then you state that full-brogues would not be acceptable. Question: Wouldn't long-wings be considered full-brogues?
Michael Powell "...what is a lounge anyway; what do you do there?" A lounge is a place for lounging. In other words, it's a place for gathering not related to work or church. It could be some place specific such as a cocktail lounge, or simply the "living room" of your home when guests are invited.
It's quite anachromatic is it? The reason this is confusing is due to the fact that the dress code implies the formality base from the early 20erth century. What we consider formal nowdays (business full-ON ansamble) was quite casual back then--thus the term "lounge". Wearing a lounge suit then could be interpreted as modern man sporting a tracksuit with a pair of slippers nowdays. Suit was for lounging, and One would seem quite embarassed to step a foot outside in it. Too much mental discomfort
Very informative video sir! I didn’t know this, so now I know! This will make my garderobe even better! Thank you!
Garderobe is dutch, ben je nederlands? (are you dutch?)
I believe garderobe is another term for ‘dressing room’ or occasionally ‘wardrobe’. My mother used to call the room which adjoined her boudoir the ‘garderobe’. Might have changed though!

that was my first thought as well
Thank you so much for mentioning what the equivalent ladies attire would be. I am very interested in learning the women's counter parts to classic style dress.
Another *great* video. My friends have really respected me more since I started to follow you videos. Brilliant work!
The shade of navy you’re wearing is spot on. Harder to choose than one would expect.

Adriano Oda Yamada no problem. Not hating just stating. I generally dress pretty well just not in the way I’d prefer. No layers etc.

These videos give me great joy. Thank you.
Thank you for including the ladies
Great content as usual!
Love these dresscode videos!!❤❤

I have a mid gray suit that’s the only suit bc i’m 13 would that work?
I'd been wondering what a lounge suit was. Thank you for explaining this
I’m going to start calling a suit a lounge suit on invitations to see what creative things people come up with. ...it sounds like you’re describing cocktail attire. Is there difference between cocktail attire and lounge suit?
Awesome idea!
Conrail attire is louder
When can we wear a banded collar, ruffled shirts or bolo ties?
What weight is that suit? It drapes very well despite looking like a lightweight worsted which typically don't.
Great video Mr , please can you make a video where you explain that bags that are shown at 2:14
I believe those are binocular cases.
Yanis Benchara it’s their binoculars in cases. They are at the races.

What are the major differences between lounge wear and business formal? They seem relatively similar.
"Have you ever gotten an invitation..." No.
Would wearing an odd vest in a buff or light Gray color with a dark navy suit be considered inappropriate for lounge attire?
Yes
I'm a big fan of wearing waistcoats, but I don't have the matching waistcoat for my go-to navy suit. Would a mid-grey odd waistcoat paired with the suit be appropriate for the lounge suit dress code?
Well done, Sir. Thanks for the vid.
I had to clean my screen to see the detail at 3:47. Thanks for the video though.

Great outfit mate
Hi, I'm graduating from university and I'm not sure what to wear underneath the gown at the graduation ceremony. I was wondering whether you had any suggestions for such an occasion.
Lounge Suit is ideal
Great channel
What about wearing high neck pullover under blazer ??
Plz tell
So basicly a lounge suit is pretty much a dark blue suit with Black shoes, white shirt and a tie. And ofc a black belt with matching watch.
I wonder what women dress code stuff is. Like a shirt dress is like daywear and a gown is like formal evening. Love ❤️ these videos!
How should I wear a kilt?
Why do you have such an aversion to button-down collars, i.e. what makes them casual? I'm a huge fan of them as they keep the collar stiffly in place without the need to starch or use a tie bar and they ensure that the collar does not come with too much spread.
Very informative as always 👍😎
Would a club collar be appropriate as well? I was wondering about its place on the formality scale when compared to regular pointed collars.
Yes, it is a little bold though, just keep it simple aside from that.
So the checkered is not lounge suit ? I want to know
Would monk straps work with a lounge suit?
Can you wear an odd vest?
Oh nvm the suit I was searching was a cocktail suit and you can wear an odd pants and vest and a jacket
What brand are your shoes?
When will the giveaway results be announced?
Thank you, Sven Now i can Keep up with invitations ;)
What do you think of corean/mao collars?
He once said he doesn't like them at all.
So basically for men "lounge suit" is the same as "business attire"?
Speaking of embassies though, Herr Schneider, for reasons too complex to explain in a RUclips comment, in parts of the Mideast it is seen as uncouth to wear a necktie in less formal environments.

Rye Hots if you go to certain universities in the UK you're reauored to attend these kind of events semi often!
What about a cocktail cuff for dress shirt? Too casual?
Cocktail cuffs would be fine.
What is a cocktail cuff please?
Lyndell B They're shirt cuffs that fold back like a French cuff but fasten with buttons. They're also known as turnback cuffs.
And they are called bond cuffs and milanese cuffs
I want to wear a suite everywhere i go, 365 days a year
Good and safe advice, though George Clooney received rave reviews on his light grey lounge suit worn at the Meghan/Harry affair.
I am sure they also liked the matching tie and pocket square...
that was awful
You state that oxfords, semi-brogues or derbys are acceptable -- showing a pair of long-wings as your derby example (I'd call them blutchers or just long-wings before calling them derbys, but..) Then you state that full-brogues would not be acceptable.

what happened to the sharpness of the camera? the video looks blurred ?
Looks great on our end...
My apology, it was my definitions. thank you Rafael.
In the thumbnail you look like G-eazy.
So a lounge suit is basically a business suit ...
That's the way it looks to me. Just wear a solid color shirt. And what is a lounge anyway; what do you do there?
Not quite, you can wear a rope stripe suit for business but it would be too loud for a lounge suit. Overall, they are similar though
Michael Powell "...what is a lounge anyway; what do you do there?"
A lounge is a place for lounging. In other words, it's a place for gathering not related to work or church. It could be some place specific such as a cocktail lounge, or simply the "living room" of your home when guests are invited.
Thank you, Seiki
Yep.
For a Royal Wedding I would prefere a morning coat... that is, if I were a man 😉😏
Maybe not for a Royal Wedding but I've seen women wearing suits/ties and, when done right, is a good look.
I don’t understand. “Lounge” suit sounds like it should be casual, like a leisure suit. But throughout this video, you advise against looking casual.
It's quite anachromatic is it? The reason this is confusing is due to the fact that the dress code implies the formality base from the early 20erth century.

I've watched a few of this guys videos and I feel like he's stuck in the past. Its like hes giving advice to men from the 50's or 60's.
wearing suspenders is a huge red flag lol
Is that bad?
Wearing suspenders is more comfortable and practical than belt
He's not stuck in the past. You're not moving in the right circle in the present 😜
