Face Coverings On The Tube

- From Monday 15th June, Government guidance says that face coverings must be worn for the full duration of journeys on the public transport network. TfL invited me down to Brixton Tube Station to see what other measures have been put into place during the current situation, plus also an interview with Andy Lord - the Managing Director of London Underground.
Many thanks to Andy Lord at London Underground, and the TfL Press Office.

can we just take a moment to appreciate Geoff's editing
Oh yes! It was particularly nicely done!
(especially loved the symbols for [parts of] words)
I always admire it. It is superb.
Thanks you, appreciated. i always put in a lot of work to perfect it, and it’s nice when people notice!
@@geofftech2 Your editing at the end of your previous video (the train in the tunnel drone shot at the least used station)...was honestly sublime. I must have watched it about 15 times!
The production quality on his vids are on par with multi million sub channels. His channel is very underated.
If you wear that on the Bakerloo line it magically goes black after a few minutes
presumably due to the pollution
FNLDN Dust from rails, wheels and brake blocks
Needs some gum stuck to it
Haha
Brown on the Bakerloo, black on the Northern.
Anyone else think about how Geoff has to walk to place the camera, then film himself walking or riding, then go back to get the camera, just for a 4 second shot, if that isn’t dedication to the video then I don’t know what is
This gives a whole new meaning to "mind the gap" because you have to mind the gap between people now.
The irony that the press officer doesn’t want to be on camera.
Yet he still is...
They have to buy the rest of the office pizza if they are caught on camera.
There's something about the music in the opening section particularly that sums up the sense of loss from this current situation. It's upbeat yet simultaneously mournful.
God bless and thank you to ALL key workers not just the nhs, who are doing an outstanding job. Thank you thank you, you brave wonderful people xxx
Thanks
Michael Worden no thanks needed x
Lovely interview. Well done to the boss for crediting the staff.
Hi Geoff, im the guy who put those posters in those bus stops.
Still putting those posters up now,
Will you have the opportunity to save some from the bin if TfL doesn't save them when they eventually come down?
I myself have some Toronto Transit signage that would have gone in the bin otherwise, though it's not historically notable like these signs
reaperexpress we have loads, we just throw excess posters in the recycling bins, the poster you see in the vid, i only put that up this week, now im taking them down and replacing it with the same poster, but it has Mondays date on it for Monday is compulsory day of wearing masks on transport.
Respect
@@OntarioTrafficMan Everything becomes historically notable if you wait long enough...
Favourite bus route - 196 South Norwood - Brixton (- Elephant)
Favourite tube station - Brixton
This video ticked all the boxes and provided great publicity for all that TfL are doing.
Thanks!
The sooner the better those signs will be in a museum!
Team London volunteers will be at the following stations early mornings next week to help give out face coverings to people who don’t have one.
London Bus Stations
Walthamstow, West Croydon, Stratford,Finsbury Park, Hammersmith
London Underground Stations
Paddington, Baker Street, Kings Cross, London Bridge, East Ham, Leyton, Stratford, Waterloo, Canning Town, Euston, Liverpool Street, Victoria, West Ham, Brixton, Vauxhall, Seven Sisters
Tube feels like nostalgia now. Good ol' days lmao.
A great video Geoff. I'm just an occasional visitor to London, but their publicity has been impeccable, with regular updates emailed from them. Yet other forms of transport I use I haven't heard much from them in the last few months. So a big thumbs up from me to TFL for their great information.
Well Geoff you showed amazing restraint, visit the station, down to the platform, even into a carriage. But no journey - wasn't essential.
Not surprised geoff marshall is wearing an underground themed mask
Yeah, erm....that was kind of geoffs point
@@johnsmith-wx5fb To be fair I didn't have a clue what he said it was (barman market?), and only realised it was themed from Ben's comment, so I imagine others wil benefit from the comment in the same way.
MrDannydoodah barman moquette, not market. Moquette as in its tube seating pattern
@@johnsmith-wx5fb Is it front an actual seat, or just the pattern?
@@PianoKwanMan that masks seen more methane than a sewage works
Good PSA Geoff.
One caveat on the mask rule. People (like me) that have respiratory issues that cannot wear a mask are not required to. You should be prepared to explain yourself politely when traveling, why you cannot wear one. Hopefully this won't be for long. And please remember they are one-time use and to dispose accordingly. Keep Britain safe and clean.
Are not clear face shields available as an option to a mask in the UK...?
J Godfrey the massive plastic things? They don’t count as it doesn’t restrict airflow.
@@FateBoost Not massive as in the type one would use with a grinder or some such.... but rather purpose made for the pandemic. In Canada we have some that can be worn like a pair of eye glasses or that clip to the brim of a cap..they extend below the chin..and are perfectly acceptable in lieu of a mask for those in the hospitality industry or with previously exiting respiratory ailments...
Don't count because they don't restrict air flow?! Well the whole point is if your air flow is already restricted by a respiratory disorder wearing a face shield is certainly better than wearing nothing at all all and certainly much less dangerous then wearing a mask. Tbh you are less likely to touch your face if you are wearing a face shield just watch everybody wearing a mask they constantly touch them, unless of course they are well versed in the use of PPE.
Does that mean that people with breathing problems do not spread viruses? How will you be able to persuade the police of your condition? Will you need a note from your GP before you can travel on the bus?
Last time I went into a tube station was on the 16th March and it was London Bridge, I’ve already forgotten what it looks like! 😂😂
Euston station on the same date! 10 days later I started coughing... Still sick.
Oh no!
They've made the ruling regarding face masks from Monday 15th June, I don't understand why it was not introduced straight away, it's a bit finding a unexploded bomband and deciding not to make safe for a week or two.
Unexploded bombs have been there 70 odd years whats the difference?
While the "unexploded bomb" analogy may not be the best, it's still a pretty valid point. If it *will be* important to wear a mask from the 15th, why *isn't* it important today? I suppose it's giving people time to find and buy, or make, a mask but it still seems a bit odd.
Nice to see you back on the tube, Geoff! I can’t wait to get back on it when i’m able to go back to uni!
I'm dead curious to see the old polio posters and warning signs from mid-century America.
Heroes for sure. Well done for highlighting the very important work of the frontline staff.
The changes this pandemic has delivered to our way of life makes me so sad. Thanks Geoff for staying positive.
I absolutely loath face masks for all the reasons, but I have to say Geoff, that your fabulous home made moquette version made me smile, and its the only one that has!
Seems a bit late in the day to make face coverings mandatory
The tube hand sanitizer is super liquidy. Shout out to all the staff at *Brixton* tube!!😘😘
Brixton Lube?
Would sting a bit
@@bl00dhoney Some people would like that.
In Germany, the obligation to wear a mask has been around since the beginning of April.
MaRcEl_91 Hence why you are doing much better than us (along with a competent test and trace system I hear)
In Portugal is the same. In all public transportation: underground, bus, trains and boats
That's because Germans are sane.
I started wearing a mask last autumn because of traffic fumes.
We in England are woefully behind. Mandatory quarantine for people coming off flights has only just started this week, should have been put into place 2 months ago. Too little too late in my opinion.
As a bus driver around Surrey, Monday is going to be interesting trying to enforce the face masks, I’m thankful that my bus company has assault screens fitted so I don’t have to wear one whilst driving. I have been taking photos of the signs whilst at work as a record of this strange time.
Bet Geoff got really excited just stepping back on a train. I would.
This is so good and easy to understand the information, also love the editing where you’ve had to cycle past and the presumably cycle back to get the camera haha
Im going insane at home to the point where I stare at the train photos on my phone
Watching this video again now really shows me how far we have come since the start of the pandemic.I feel very lucky to be able to travel freely again.
Great to see you back out on The Transit. Have been a big fan for a long time. Stay Safe Geoff and Keep Up The Great Work
Amazing to think of how resilient the Tube is; World War I, Spanish Flu/Influenza World War II and now COVID. The Tube has seen the world change in monumental ways. Its neat to see a small glimpse of history in the making.
Excellent Geoff. I'm 69.4 or so, retired and normally go everywhere on public transport. I have been on two short bus journeys and no train journeys for three months. I'm going to break that next week and go see a friend over the other side of town. If I don't do that then I'll end up in a mental ward.
You know somebody's videos are good when you can drop in on one of them no matter what mood your in and still fully appreciate and enjoy it.
Amazing video Geoff! You are a true advocate for the railways and real ambassador. Your channel has given me more information about this than any other media source
Excellent report on current travel conditions. Well done, Geoff, this is so helpful and needed by the community. You are such a good presenter.
I can tell you now from a drivers point of view it's not fun to only allow 8 / 10 / 20 passengers only on at a time and have to drive past bus stops
Luckily they are double deckers, up here in Central Scotland one company basically is only using single deckers because they replaced most of their buses from double to single.
I had one of you dumbos tell me my travelcard was invalid after 12 midnight
john smith: Do you really have to insult all bus drivers because one of them gave out incorrect advice? I don’t see how that’s OP’s fault?
With drivers sealed in their cabs and passengers getting on and off using the middle doors, it's going to be very hard for the drivers to restrict the number of passengers to the required limits especially if the bus stops are busy and people are waiting in the rain.
@@trevordance5181 Passengers now have to enter through the front door again on (virtually) all London routes
Thank you for taking the time to let us know what to expect from tube travel.
Great stuff from the managing director was really encouraging to hear, I love this city, solidarity to my fellow Londoners hope you are keeping well!
It is true the transport staff are so key workers, I had to travel from Dundee to Couper Angus the other day by bus for essential work and the drivers were brilliant, they were cracking on.... keep up the good journalism
I feel like the editing on this superb, especially the beginning of the video is just awesome.
Glad you liked it! (Thank you)
Great video Geoff and nice to see another video. Stay safe!
Brilliant stuff Geoff. Thanks for helping to break the monotony.
When are you going to market All The Stations face masks, Geoff?
Yep, All The Stations logo masks or 'underground map style' design printed masks would be great. Soo many creative options to make things more fun :)
It's nice to see you at a Underground Station again Geoff! great video.
My 4 year old son adores watching London Underground Tube stations and watching the tube journeys with you and your girlfriend (admittedly so do I now!)
Especially like the challenges.
It would be interesting to see a video of the same station on next Monday! Great video, btw❤️
Geoff have you heard about the Central Line improvements inside the carriages like the Jubilee Line?
Great public service video, thank you Geoff!
Well put together and informative as always, thanks :-)
Thanks for doing this. I had to leave London for lockdown and i have been missing the tube so much! It’s great to se it
The London Underground is one of my favorites after the Barcelona Metro and the Bilbao Metro. Thank you for showing it in such detail !!! From Barcelona.
That was surprisingly interesting as I'm preparing for my first trip on the tube tomorrow after 4 months away. I can't say I have ever enjoyed tube travel (and I have done my fair share of daily commuting over the years) but as an exiled Londoner, the Underground is one of the things about London I'm most proud of.
Amazing content Geoff!! Keep up the good work!!
I really love your videos, informative and interesting. Keep up the good work!
I posted this in twitter over 1000 impressions in my Twitter with in 2 mins brilliant video Geoff and all the team at #Brixton
this video once again is amazing geoff all of your videos are class
Can't believe the lengths the staff are going to to serve the public and protect their families. 👏👏👏
Fantastic video as ever. Really good insight to how things are shaping up for the months ahead.
Wear the moquette! Wear the moquette! - the melody instantly starts in my brain
i agree that a lot of companys have found that working from home works!! a lot of offices will be reduced or closed all together why have an exspensive office in london when you can get your business done another whay
Yep, I can see that many offices would get downsized or closed. Once many companies have gone through the work of making WFH being effective, it makes little sense to not take that opportunity to reduce the times you need employees in the office.
That said, conversely, some people aren’t as productive at home (and have to deal with the distractions and constraints of other family members etc) so perhaps the result may not be as significant? We shall see I guess...
Thanks for my visiting my local area, all be it about two stops on towards Brixton from that stop
I get the feeling things will turn to normal by September
I think the same. Let’s hope we’re right...
I doubt it. Not because of corona but because people adapt and many like the lockdown when it comes to working from home.
This aged well
Amazing to see how much has changed so quickly
My Dad's birthday was 09.06.2020 and he worked for the London Transport (underground), for 15 years (retired many years ago) I've been lucky enough to sit a driver several times and it brings a different perspective, to a tube journey. I enjoy the stories, he has about that time (and many others).
I don't use public transport as much as I used to, due to having a car and my current work location is 40 minutes walk from public transport.
But please, remember people these measures are being put in place to protect each other.
Great video as always. The main image that I take away is of standing a few years from now, shoulder to shoulder with complete strangers, gazing at the posters from this dystopian time. I hope that TfL takes your suggestion seriously.
I sincerely hope that hand sanitize stations are here to stay on every station in the country and every shop, more so for food service outlets, it's such a good idea and should become the norm. Great Video Geoff thankyou, what about a mask with the tube map on it.
Many of them will be vandalised within 'five minutes' by the same d-heads who don't follow rules/don't care about other people.
Alcohol hand sanitiser is not good for your skin literally burns & dries it out - Alcohol free Aloe Vera hand sanitiser does exactly the same in regards to bacteria & is much kinder to your skin, nourishes it.
You know what would be useful at times like this would be massive extra capacity, with huge new carriages running through the middle of London with new stations and wide extra platforms at existing stops... maybe one day, maybe ...
Excellent, informative video Geoff, Thank you. Good to see you developing your relationship with London Underground and the top man at that.👌 He seems like a fairly straightforward bloke; not the pompous twit that a lot of CEOs/MDs can often be.
Cheers for now,
Dougie.
Thanks for showing what they are doing in the station I live around the corner from. I haven't been in there since 19th March, so it's useful to see the setup in case I need to make a trip. I get about by bike instead, but the motor traffic is building up a lot now. Good video. It's really difficult videoing while on a bike. I've tried and not succeeded.
4:10 Geoff is so big now the Underground are holding trains for him! Oh and the music is amazing on a side note
I also have tube masks... going to have to use them next week to commute!
Well done.
Great video! Certainly a piece of social history in the making here. Geoff got some serious clout these days, wrangling an interview with London Underground managing director, fantastic insight!
Anther great video mate 😊
Good video once again Geoff. Hope you're keeping safe.
Another excellent video Geoff
Either the stick figures are 8 feet tall, or they're stood closer than 2 metres. Not sure how much they're going to help.
Philip Naylor they need a little *not to scale note at the bottom 😆
Another great video Geoff . Can't wait to get back on the train........I miss them so much
Brilliant again, Geoff. Your poignant last question to Andy to ask how the staff are coping is one we all need to keep asking ourselves, and each other. Whether it be at TfL, NHS or any of the countless other essential service functions, the personal hardships of things such as self isolation from family and friends, in order to keep services running for those who need them, cannot be stressed enough. Furthermore, for those who have lost their jobs, for those fortunate enough to have been able to continue to work, for those with high-risk health conditions who need to stay at home, for those without a place to call home, and for everyone else in between, this has taken a toll on the mental health of our collective society. Let's not be afraid to ask how each other is doing. The more we do to care for each other now, the sooner we can all enjoy each other's company (and trains) again soon. To Geoff (maybe), and all the others who may be reading this, in case it needs to be said, I hope you are well.
Been working throughout the lockdown in central London/ docklands.
Outdoors. Often multiple public transport journey per day. Tube/bus.
Toilets are an issue.
Monday will be the first time I have worn a mask during lockdown. And it will only be for the journeys.
I was in construction before retirement and have still a supply of dust masks we used when cutting concrete and they are very good with built in wire across the bridge to keep it secure and as they were designed to keep out dust they are pretty robust, so if you are stuck try the builders suppliers and you can wash some of them a few times
I always forget how long it will have been since some people have even been inside a tube station, that they haven't been there to see all this signage and service changes pop up over time
I agree Geoff they should keep the stuff for the historical record
I took the tube for the first time in four months last week finally coming home after getting stuck out of the country for the duration of lockdown. Mid-day on a Saturday in July through Tottenham Court Road on the Northern Line. Normally an absolute nightmare. The train was empty. It was so surreal.
It's striking to see such familiar scenes so deserted. I suppose that's true anywhere, but I never realised how much I associated London with crowds.
That fella is 5000 times more effective than our government. Well done... good luck to the tube. Sighs: More geese than swans now live - more fools than wise. Well done Geoff great to see the situation as my daughter is in London it is somewhat reassuring.
i have been working at birmingham new street stasion for the past 3 weeks. and in new street when it gets busy have put in a 1 way system.
Love that Geoff is a fan of lo Fi/triphop/chill wave music!
The strangest part is non if the adverts have changed since March.
Kinda creepy.
The music keeps reminding me of the 28 Days Later theme tune
I thought the same thing about those posters. They will be fascinating to see 30-50years in the future.
Welldone guys keep up the good work stay safe 🙏
Here in Boston on the MBTA you have doors only allowing back door entry and exiting, all services are reduced, card only payment, rows near driver cabs are blocked off, and seats are blocked off in every other space.
Geoff Enjoyed the video, especially Andy Lord. Can I suggest doing an interview with Andy Byford, he is the new TFL commissioner. He is a fantastic railwayman. Started his journey on the underground then Southeastern, Southern and much much more.
You were right, we’d look back and realise all those posters and signs were from a strange era!
The powers that be deem these notices and rules are currently essential for our well being.
No doubt, we will follow the instructions on all the notices on public transport, shops etc.
But when this is all over, and it will be over hopefully quite soon, I hope all these unsightly
notices will come down. Personally, at that time, I Never Never want to see them again.
I think there should be "ticket" barriers, which will only let you through if you have an oyster/travelcard and help yourself to a squirt of hand sanitiser
