This game is probably more deserving of the Black Mesa treatment than any other game in existence It needs a bit more though, it's an amazing game, but so much of it is just plain clunky.
Cephalopod51 Kind of revising my statement after playing it more The movement and combat are pretty much perfect, what needs to be tweaked is the skills. I've seen mods that do it, but they need to rebuild things like swimming and environmental training, I saw one that combined them into athletics, which made you move faster and jump higher.
I can see what you mean, but i actualy dont like the Black Mesa treatment. Took too long, full of bugs, i see the devs being jerks on the forums to anyone who has less know how of how games or the engine work, they change too much of the game for my taste...and the gfx sure look good in comparioson to the original game.. but for the time it was released still didnt look how it should.

One of my favorite games ever, I bought right when it came out and was glad I gave it a chance. The shooting is fine if you upgrade your weapon skills and wait for your crosshairs to shrink down. It’s an rpg after all. I love the music too, used to listen to the opening song to get hyped up. A masterpiece from the golden age of gaming.
Just my own opinion, but I ended up having the opposite experience from what you describe. I got into this game after System Shock 2 the previous year, and I approached it in a similar fashion of extreme caution, methodical exploration, and hoarding. Lots and lots of hoarding. This meant I ended up with more items and ammo than I knew what to do with, and often got into situations where I had to decide what to throw away, or how best to waste my excess supplies. For instance, I'd still have 5 fire extinguishers in my inventory and there'd be no more enemies left to spray in the face. I found that the stealth in this game was much easier to pull off than in Thief or NOLF. Crouching makes you almost completely silent, enemies give up searching for you fairly quickly, and the right combination of non-lethal weapons can work wonders. For example, if you pepper spray (or gas grenade) someone and _then_ tranq them in the head while they're gagging, it's an instant KO. Mind you, I'm saying this as someone who's played through it 50+ times, has discovered every secret and exploit, and for whom building a massive tower of furniture or scaling a skyscraper by climbing on LAMs is a normal thing.

If we stopped focusing on resolution and graphics in games, by now we would have much better content and better thought out game play. Think of the size of the games you could build if you didn't give a fuck about the polygon count and other numbers...

Sorry but the priority of graphical and presentational quality was basically inevitable and it’s something that will never change. Some of the best games of all time are also games that helped fuel this focus on graphics and presentation. Games like hl2, crysis, halo, the first 3 mgs games, the 2000s gta games, are partly to blame for this focus. removing these games from history in order to stop people from focusing on graphics in the future would also mean removing a lot of innovation and creativity that has been developed in the past 20 years. Lot of the problems in the current industry stem from really good games from decades ago so fixing this issue isn’t so simple

I received the GOTY edition free from PC Gamer. I'd never really given it any thought. Was like, "why not, I'll install it." OMG, changed my gaming life forever. Spent like the next 16 hours playing nonstop, and only got to Lebedev's airfield, which I thought was near the end. I was exceptionally happily surprised, still probably my favorite game, along with Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask (aaahh, nostalgia).
The OG Deus Ex is by far my favorite game of all time. It still holds up amazingly well even today. All 3 games where fantastic... 3 games.. We don't talk about Invisible War.
I finally played Dues Ex for the first time at the very beginning of the COVID outbreak. It's quickly become my favorite PC game of all time. I imagine a huge reason for this is how resonant the themes of the story are in 2020. Never has a story about the near-future felt so believable.
I think you're wrong when you say that you are forced into fighting, from what I remember you can basically get through the entire game without engaging, provided you have the necessary skills and augs and are ok with the idea of save scumming.
Gggmanlives Lol that's true, if you want to save him you have to fight your way through, but It's a choice between a tough fight to save him or just getting out and leaving him to die. So you're not exactly forced to engage, you just have to be ok with the idea of Paul dying. Too bad you can't knock him out and carry him up the ladder though lol.
Best game ever and will never be topped. The mechanics, game play and player choice have been matched and exceeded. But never have they enabled such a good story and allowed you to move through the story in such an enjoyable way. Even Spector's and Harvey Smith's follow ups (both: DX: IW, HS: Dishonored), as good as they were, didn't come close. I don't think any thing will be made with such a scope by a big studio. But here's hoping SS3 is as good in the right ways. And I've *never* uninstalled it. Still have my 0th save game. I still remember rage quitting when the sleep darts didn't do shit and the enemies knew exactly where I was when I shot them, no matter how deep the shadows or how quickly I tried to duck behind something. For some reason, I tried again. The opening sound/music still gives me goose bumps.
@Amadeus Eisenberg That's bullshit. You have no right to tell someone what their opinion should be. And if you think a post like this could ever be anything besides an opinion, then you need help WRT interacting with people. ASD? NPD? Then you go and express *your* opinion that it is not OK for others to express theirs. Or are you too ego-blind to realize that "disrespectful and cringy" is an opinion? Or are you so egotEstical to believe that your opinion is right for everybody, everywhere? People should stick to saying, "I respectfully disagree." However, in your case, respect is not warranted. Making a post ~like this is just disrespectful and cringy[sic].~ Go fuck yourself. No one else ever will.
"game forces you to fight" Like where exactly? Anna? You can either Flatlander Woman her, or LAM her at Lebedev's, no fight necessary. Simons? You can walk right past him, you even get to meet him again if you do. Meele training is not useless either, enough points in it and the aug and you can destroy the enviroment without the use of explosives, in addition to making the humble Baton you start with a viable nonlethal tool throughout the game and make the DTS join the GEP and LAM in the "actually a lockpick" category.
Deus Ex is, quite frankly, one of the greatest games ever made. If you love great graphics, it may not be for you. It you love simple gameplay and controls, it may not be for you. It is an immersive sim, in all aspects of the term. It has a spectacular story, innovative gameplay - for the time - and a plethora of ways to complete each mission. The key to remember is that you are not some over-powered creature. You are an augmented human. You can upgrade many skills, but you have to focus on the ones that will work for you. You can play this game like a first-person shooter. You can play this game like a stealth game - al la Thief. You can play as a combination of the two. Compared to modern games, which have seen 20 years of advancement, it can look and feel a little janky. But, give it a chance, and learn not to be held by the hand at every point, with not markers on a map, and enjoy exploring and experimenting - you will love this game. It is still the best of all the Deus Ex series because it had ambition. I hope this review makes some people want to play the game. Remember, don't give up after the first few minutes. It takes a good hour or two to really get what the game is, and more time to master. Have fun, people.
I tried playing Deus Ex as a kid around it's release when my father bought it, I hated it couldn't get into it(or understand it really). But in 2010 I gave it another go and fell in love with it. Since then I've completed it twice and just finished the revision mod(which was pretty good in my opinion).
This is a pretty fair review tbh. I bought the game on steam having watched a playthrough on youtube and gave up half a dozen times on the first level. Stuck with it and have completed 3 run-throughs since. Tough to get the hang of but VERY rewarding if you persevere.
Checking in from 2022. Deus Ex is still #1 on my all time favorite PC games list. It was an amazing experience each of the probably dozen or more times I played it all the way through back in the day.
I completed the entire game 4 times. The first two times using in game cheats and the 3rd time using the revision overhaul which I did recently this year (due to quarantine). 4th time using new game+ in revision overhaul. Absolutely loved it, specially having all the possibilities at end of the game with Paul being alive.
I also use the white HUD. As much as I liked fast paced first person shooters like quake and unreal, and even half-life, deus ex is one of my favourites now. Once you get past the clunky gunplay, you can get into a very believable, immersive universe with superb storytelling and an enormous level of freedom.
I bought this recently on steam for that sale they had for just a little over a dollar and I wasn't expecting much especially seeing the visuals but now that I see how complex and well thought written this game from the past was it only made me want to go back to even more classics. It's better than a lot of modern games in some aspects which just surprised me. It's worth a buy.
5:00 I actually never killed Simons there. I escaped from him, and later found him at the beginning of the final area of the game. That really blew me away. And there's no discussion, Invisible War is fuckshit.
Hey GGGman, I'm not sure if you know this but, there's a secret to this game on the character creation screen. The game doesn't really tell you that you start with the pistol skill trained. Even if you take the points back from it after creating your character. So if you need a few extra skill points, just change the pistol skill back to untrained. It will still be trained after you start the game.
A little known glitch, if you tab to inventory immediately after using the lock-pick or multitool, one tool will unlock the target, even if it says it needs more, just stay at inventory for roughly 2 seconds per tool/pick required and it'll work. no need to put points into those skills at all!
Great review. However, I think that the weapons are really well done. Apparently, you haven't experimented enough with them. 6:09 "Even when the (weapon) skill is mastered, it'll randomly miss the head for some bizarre reason". A. No it doesn't miss at all when the skill is mastered and the cross-hair remains fully shrunk at all times. B. If you attach a laser sight to that crossbow, it hits exactly where the laser dot is.
Just bought this game from having it recommended to me constantly whenever I bring up what a big fan of the Thief series I am. Looking forward to diving in.
I feel like the one thing thats holding me back from playing this game is the shooting. I consistently hear that sometimes you 'just miss' because the game does that early 2000s thing where bullets go where they want instead of where the crosshair is.
@@saisameer8771 I'm aware it's an RPG. But I still think it's funky that these early 2000s RPGs have a tendency to give weapons a mind of their own. In Skyrim, even at level 1 archery, the arrows go where I point them. Leveling up should simply mean more damage, faster reload, slower degredation, etc.
Gggmanlives I don't know if you are going to read this, and I don't know if you occasionally playing recommended mods. But please, try to play "The Nameless Mod" for this game! It's replayable, it's have a few separate storylines, with different missions for each! great soundtrack, great dialogs, and more... Please consider try it.
You're right. I watched this video, broke out my CD, grabbed some beer out of the fridge well it installed, and now getting ready to play through this game one more time. Thanks.
Wish I watched your review before I played first time. Still I did eventually figure out and thoroughly enjoy experimentation. The audio for me was the most memorable including both music, dialogue, and sound effects.
You should give the GMDX mod a go! It tweaks the physics, the AI, the skills, the augs and even adds a perk system and a few elements from the sequels. Also, the Mini-crossbow is finally useful since a headshot results in an instant takedown. All of this without changing the core experience. I'm playing through it for the first time and having a blast.
I will never forget a conversation between JC and a junkie "Stay back I gotta bomb" "Bombs a bad choice for close combat" Lol for being 1/4 robot dude had some wit.
yeah....the game definitely has a learning curve to it. I remember playing half a level with no legs my first play through and getting a bit frustrated haha, and now its my favorite game. There are few problems with the game, no doubt......but the game does a lot of things extremely well that these problems are overshadowed by the pure genius of Deus Ex. Everything in this review is pretty much spot on, nice job.
4 months ago I found a copy of the original (non goty) deus ex in perfectly kept original packing. I paid $20 for it and it now sits on my mantle like artwork. Best purchase I ever made.
Not gonna lie, this is the first Cyberpunk-genre game I ever play and I always adore with the genre since then. In this year, I'm excited for Cyberpunk 2077. Hopefully, it will deliver more as its been hyped for
The ONLY time I actually had to "fight" was Walton Simons in the very last level (and he was pretty easy). Maybe an animal or two as well... but that's it. And, come to think of it - you CAN just run away from Simons also (I eventually stunned him instead and left him by the helipad.. to await arrest). Ggg shows the breakout from the 'ton hotel and the gunther herman boss fight as examples - but you can kill Herman with his killphrase, and all you need to get out of the hotel without fighting is an adaptive camo item (which you can find on that same level).
I loved Deus ex's awesome variety and style and that was on the PS2! This game is really something of a marvel, i mean how many times this game could have flopped is beyond me. Great review, you totally addressed all the main issues i had with the game (the dragons tooth sword was crazily overpowered but i still loved it) REQUEST: i know its a console shooter but i feel BLACK desevers a look at and no this is not COD BLOPS stuff.
Guys jst got it and I think it's a master piece of a game it even does better than some modern games, it deserves a remake for future generations to see this gem
Actually killing bosses is entirely optional (aside of Anna Navarre although there is a trick for it) gunther ifor instance can be an avoided fight. Going stealthy and reach the compy, or engaging the fight and run away for a while then go back. Walton is the easiest to skip though but in the latest level he throws lams very quickly :D
This game is amazing the story the sci fi the corruption the mechanics everything is great, but the most amazing thing is this game came out in 2000 and it provided for the first time multi ways to complete missions on each level with multiple routes what other games did that back in 2000 it was unheard of!
When deus ex came out I played a two level demo of the game and instantly fell in love. Then I bought the game and invested all my skill points in swimming and environment training XD so I also fell into that trap that you're talking about
for some reason i never heard of this game as a kid, i just tried it couple of years ago for the first time and i was blown away, just like System Shock this game is a masterpiece, and ofc it's the best of the series. actually most ppl hate Invisible War, but i think it's great as well. no doubt about the soundtrack, the Hong Kong theme is nothing but amazing, for some reason it always reminds me of the opening theme of The Long Good Friday
Just so you know... The 10mm pistol is an absolute beast. I'm not joking, once you master the pistol skill, it becomes kind of overpowered. It takes down most normal human enemies in 1 headshot and those mech type enemies in 2 headshots. I seriously recommend trying this out, since the ammo is abundant in the beginning of the game. Once you stack up, just try not to use it when unnecessary and save it for the tougher parts. Just aim for the head and be precise, which isn't hard if you have the scope. I did this on my first playtrough, and I seriously can't stop doing it ever since, even if I say to myself not to do it again. But for newcomers, combat in the earlier parts of the game isn't run and gun . It's more like "stand the fuck still, line up your shot, and aim for the head".
This game is probably more deserving of the Black Mesa treatment than any other game in existence
It needs a bit more though, it's an amazing game, but so much of it is just plain clunky.
It's less clunky than a lot of RPGs and first-person RPGs around.

Not sure why it took so long. My first playthrough was not exactly peaceful. I talked to everybody, explored everything, and I probably died a lot.
The OG Deus Ex is by far my favorite game of all time. It still holds up amazingly well even today. All 3 games where fantastic...
3 games.. We don't talk about Invisible War.
Cum on! The last 2 are pretty much a reboot series. (YUP! Better than 'IW)
+Filthy Swine Do you want to save Paul? Hope you've got some points into a weapon skill then...
Gggmanlives
Lol that's true, if you want to save him you have to fight your way through, but It's a choice between a tough fight to save him or just getting out and leaving him to die. So you're not exactly forced to engage, you just have to be ok with the idea of Paul dying. Too bad you can't knock him out and carry him up the ladder though lol.
Alek4000
Really? That works? I'm gonna have to try that next time.
+Gggmanlives all you gotta do is run out the front door of the hotel, it automatically means you save paul. no fighting technically needed
even better ive always gone out the door :D
Making a post ~like this is just disrespectful and cringy[sic].~
Go fuck yourself. No one else ever will.
Been following this channel for 5 years and haven't seen this review. Deus ex is my favorite rpg shooter of all times
"game forces you to fight"
Like where exactly?
I was 7 months old when this game came out... this looks awesome and it's dirt cheap now. Going to give it a playthrough, thanks for the video man
I tried playing Deus Ex as a kid around it's release when my father bought it, I hated it couldn't get into it(or understand it really). But in 2010 I gave it another go and fell in love with it. Since then I've completed it twice and just finished the revision mod(which was pretty good in my opinion).
Got into this game at the age of 14 and finished it. Amazing game.
This is a pretty fair review tbh. I bought the game on steam having watched a playthrough on youtube and gave up half a dozen times on the first level. Stuck with it and have completed 3 run-throughs since. Tough to get the hang of but VERY rewarding if you persevere.
This retro review of Deus Ex is now retro itself.
Putting four points into a skill is a challenge the game wants you to take.
You need to review the overhaul mods for DX1 like Revision or GMDX and give a more concise review like your newer videos. It would be great!
Deus Ex is my favourite game of all time. A really immersive sim.
graaahhhhh, graaaahhhh
that death noice is.epic
Pretty flacko “YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!.....AGH!”
I always lmao about how every single character in the game has that same death yell
Huge Fan of your work mate!! I played this today!! HUGE Deus Ex Fan!
When u realize that in the entire game every male enemy npc has the same scream when they die lol
@flamethrower burn baby burn! Umm...i disagree....You didn't like the game?
What a shame....
Still a better game than cyberpunk 2077.
Cyberpunk feels like a crappy fan fiction after any Deus Ex game.
@@sinenomine8739 I love the genre and I really wanted that game to be good. It's a slap in the face for all fans.
It's more of an rpg tbh. Basically put more skill points into guns and they'll be more accurate.
@@saisameer8771 I'm aware it's an RPG. But I still think it's funky that these early 2000s RPGs have a tendency to give weapons a mind of their own. In Skyrim, even at level 1 archery, the arrows go where I point them. Leveling up should simply mean more damage, faster reload, slower degredation, etc.
is there a review of the brand new deus ex revision mod in the pipeline?
+Niko Bellic We shall see.
+Gggmanlives Were you aware if you downgraded the pistol skill you got the trained skill anyway, thus giving you some free experience ?
Gggmanlives any chance of seeing your review for deus ex human revolution?
Kartikey Sharma
Yes.
Unraveler I'll check it out!
Gggmanlives Thank you!!
You will not regret this decision, I promise!
Unraveler you should check out that Deus Ex Revision mod too
This is one of these games I want to play & finish in current life form.
You're right. I watched this video, broke out my CD, grabbed some beer out of the fridge well it installed, and now getting ready to play through this game one more time. Thanks.
Enjoy!
I will and have been. Such a great game. Thanks for the great videos!
This game will never stop being my favorite game.
Wish I watched your review before I played first time. Still I did eventually figure out and thoroughly enjoy experimentation. The audio for me was the most memorable including both music, dialogue, and sound effects.
I played and completed the ps2 port back in 03 or 04 and is one of the best gaming experiences of my life for sure.
Yes, experience this game :-) Play it with Deus Ex Transcended - it's the most polished, up to date, and fixed version of Deus Ex.
You really are making awesome reviews. Just keep up mate :)
Cheers
Holly shit I went back in time! Not because of the classic game but thanks to your old mic.
I will never forget a conversation between JC and a junkie
"Stay back I gotta bomb"
"Bombs a bad choice for close combat"
Lol for being 1/4 robot dude had some wit.
Loving it 20 years later with the awesome Lay D Denton mod.
yeah....the game definitely has a learning curve to it.
I have my Human Revolution/Missing Link installed all the time and after 3rd or 4th playtrough I still find new things in it!
Keep up the good work. I seriously look forward to your reviews.
Good thoughts, nice review man.
I love how this review has got me all hyped up for deus:ex and it's on steam sale at this time! Going to have a fun weekend I guess
Or u can climb out the window too
+Brandon Williams No, I don't think you can... I think that's not a good option for some reason..
dIRECT0R yeh u can i did it, but i believe if u do then there is a chance of paul dying
+Brandon Williams That's probably it :). Had to save him...
dIRECT0R yeh i went out full rambo style just to make sure he stayed alive
I loved Deus ex's awesome variety and style and that was on the PS2!
This game is really something of a marvel, i mean how many times this game could have flopped is beyond me.
Great review, you totally addressed all the main issues i had with the game (the dragons tooth sword was crazily overpowered but i still loved it)
REQUEST: i know its a console shooter but i feel BLACK desevers a look at and no this is not COD BLOPS stuff.
I use both stealth and shooting routes but I think for me using tons of augmentations, bio cells, medkits and ammo is the best way.
Man seeing old reviews of Gman & seeing how he has now changed with his own voice lol
I loved every bit, pixel and second of this game from starting the demo for the first time to this day. It's simply a masterpiece.
Same. Some games just have something special. On PC it is dungeon keeper for me.
this game can be beaten without killing no one which I did, like when I can do that maan
I did master the swimming, somehow I like to use water for quick transportation and I did not regret putting the points to it a bit. =)
Awesome review! almost exactly my toughts when i played this back in the day. Also, i loved human revolution!
Guys jst got it and I think it's a master piece of a game it even does better than some modern games, it deserves a remake for future generations to see this gem
So psyched for the upcoming Revision mod, and the possibility of an all new release next year.
You should do another review of this game the way you did SOF 2
the best game ever, still got the crips when i here the theme.
make it Again eidos, with new graphics and a little modifications.
Have you ever reviewed The Nameless Mod for Deus Ex? If you haven't you should. It's really good though I've never finished it
This game is amazing the story the sci fi the corruption the mechanics everything is great, but the most amazing thing is this game came out in 2000 and it provided for the first time multi ways to complete missions on each level with multiple routes what other games did that back in 2000 it was unheard of!
