    My old Studebaker Semi-tractor with a Detroit Diesel 4-53 engine, on a really cold day, would start on 2 cylinders and lope along till it got a little warmer and then a third cylinder would kick in. At that point I would head down the road on three cylinders for about a half mile till the fourth cylinder would wake up and go to work. Best and most money making truck I ever had. Yes, I finally re-sleeved the engine.

      It's a real torture for the battery. We used to start our similar mini-tractor with a help of an electrical heat gun put into intake. Makes these cold starts much faster without the battery and starters depletion.

    • @MommyKhaos
      @MommyKhaos Год назад +1

      @@jiriurban5772 most modern vehicles have various heat elements from the manufacturer including oil, battery, fuel, and coolant heaters. I've never understood why people don't use them more often. For whatever reason they'd rather throw it through "cold starts" that dramatically reduce the lifespan of the equipment. If you can, get "engine block heaters" (catch all terms for heat elements I previously mentioned) for your vehicle if you know you have to start it in the cold. Simply plug them in 30-45 minutes before starting, turn it over, and keep it plugged in for a few minutes while the engine runs.

    A diesel engine was designed to bring industrial power to countries that had limited resources. A diesel engine can basically run on any fuel that ignites under compression. I believe they were originally designed to run on peanut oil. They can even run on brake fluid.... If an apocalypse came, and there is no diesel or petrol available.... you still have options with a diesel engine.. Sure it wont run as well on those other fuels, BUT in emergency situation, a running engine is better than no running engine.

      I also had the problem of the time taken to filter fish and chip shop oil to the point where it would be safe to fill the tank of my diesel Rover maestro with its excellent Perkins engine.

      Yea to reiterate this statement. Diesels made before 1994 the go to for a SHTF scenario. Engines like the V8 IH 6.9 IDI, 7.3IDI and Detroit Diesel 6.2 as well as the Cummins 5.9L 12 Valve engine. I wouldnt really reccommend doing this with a 6.5 Detroit or 6.6 Duramax or even a cummins 12v/24v made after 1993. The 7.3 Powerstroke is definitely able to run all kinds of gunk in it just know the ECM wont really know whats goin on for a little bit. Other than that the old Toyota, Nissan and Mercedes Diesels as well as Land Rover Diesels will run on anything.

      My grandfather would always keep a 5 gallon Jerry can of diesel in his heated garage during the winter in Nebraska, and he'd put a gallon of two in the fuel tank of a tractor, turn it over. If it didn't start he'd fire up a propane torch and heat up the area around the engine, put more warm fuel in, and those IH tractors from the 50s would start up like it was summer time.

      Whenever I have to do something like this I normally have to do most of those things. I usually have to make sure that the batteries are charged, two of my dad’s trucks ( both have a 7.3 international diesel engine) run on two batteries each and all four batteries are non great shape and I usually have to use either to help them start (which requires me to pop the hood). Both trucks are at least as old as I am. I don’t normally have this issue with my dad’s heavy machines though, those beasts normally just need a battery charger (usually two since most of them have two batteries) or just need new batteries

    During the winter Olympics in Lillehammer in 1994, buses from most of Norway were loaned to handle the transportation of spectators. However, Lillehammer has a much colder climate than certain other parts of Norway, and no one thought of that, which resulted in most of the buses wouldn't start the next morning, because the diesel was too thick because of the cold, it didn't have an additive that would make it float in the cold.

    my old grandpa used to drive a dozer when they were building the Alaska highway , if you shut it off during the winter, it wasn't going to start again for a long time, they had tricks to warm them up to get them started but it was the fuel, the fuel turns into a slurpee

    Cool! I thought that if a Diesel engine didn't have a block heater that it would not (or would be very difficult to) start in the Winter (at least that was my experience with a Volkswagen that i used to own).

    An old Allis with a Buda engine was about the hardest starting thing I have been around. They just don't like cold. When I was a kid lots of machinery had pony motors. On a big dirt job it was quite a racket getting everything started in the mornings.

    Love these movies with all the smoke comeing out of the stacks. question: if the oil in th cranks and the fuel was kept warm, would it have smoked when it was started? Thanks for a very good video. (Mississippi Gulf Coast, USA)
