14:30. The great Bill Watrous and his Trombone and signature Dutch Boy haircut. December 1976 might well have been the best month of my life. Senior year in HS. Christmas with my family... most of them gone now. Like so many others commented... if only I could go back... even for a day. Thanks Fred, for keeping the memories alive.
From Dirty Harry to Debbie Harry. This hits home. I used to scan the Radio Shack ads religiously. How far we've come from the magical call of digital calculators and component audio systems lol. I worked as an usher in a movie theater in December 76, and so many of the movies on this video played there. I saw the endings over and over because I had to open the doors to the theater when the credits started. Great work as always. These are excellent memory-joggers. Thanks.
Just love these trips back in time month by Month through each year !! So nostalgic and very well made !! I was almost 11 years old at this point . A month away from 12 years old . Clearly remember the sights and sounds . The movies, music and TV shows . Also the teen magazines . I started buying them around 1976.lol😂 Laura in Canada . Love these posts❤😊🎉🇨🇦🇨🇦👍🏻👍🏻
Graduated from high school and realized the world was so much more than what I watched on TV. The time I spent in front of the set declined dramatically.
Thank u Fred for taking the time out to do the research for showing the historical things of value. Including movie, posters, movie trailers, tv commercials, magazine covers, comic book covers and music all released during a particular month & year. This is my new favorite channel. Perhaps you could add some newspaper headlines and some more famous broadcast news stories. Would love to see some time period of the 80s & 90s. Thanks again
You're welcome, Josh. The relevant newspaper headlines don't turn up in my searches as much as I would like. I run the TV news stories as often as I can.
Around Christmas 1976, Genesis released their eighth studio album, Wind and Wuthering, their second with Phil Collins on vocals and their last with Steve Hackett.
Fred, as usual, you've taken a time from the past and put it back in the forefront of our minds. I remember the feeling the United States had as we celebrated our bicentennial. The patriotism, the pride, the togetherness, only 9/11 has brought us together like that since. I hate to think of what the feeling would be in our country now. Thanks for the great memories Fred!!!
I turned 15 on December 5. So many personal memories of school and outside activities which kept me busy and out of trouble! The Christmas season was one the best ever as well! The movie “Silver Streak” was filmed west of my hometown of Calgary Alberta Canada 🇨🇦. Thanks so very much again Fred from your long time subscriber (John) and it’s on to 1977!
Definitely one of my faves from you, Fred. You know a video is great, when you hate to see that it's finished. 76 was a wonderful year with fab memories and fun times. Ah, to be 11 again...
Seeing the Dodge truck ad remained me that my dad bought his first new vehicle in 1976. A stripped down Dodge D100. He drove it until 1987. Tough truck just like The Rifleman!
The 3:17 Ford Granada commercial about cars all looking the same is much more true in 2024 than 1976. I have a Nissan Altima that looks so remarkably similar to cars made by Honda, Toyota and GM that I’ve had people accidentally step into my car and sit down in the passenger seat next to me, and only realize a couple seconds later they got in the wrong car, which was parked next to their car. Another great video about things from our glorious past Fred. Thanks for posting.
The highlight of this video (for me, anyway) comes at 17:10 - the Norelco Santa commercial! I think that's why Christmas doesn't seem the same anymore; you don't see that commercial in December to really ring in the season. Thanks Fred!
That last "200 Years Ago Today" choaked me up. Listening to Ford ask to keep the Spirit of `76 alive hurts my heart. The USA is a rotten turd burger today. Seems more "Americans" hate the USA than love it. This is the only reason I am glad Pop and all my other relatives are gone. They would all be crying and angry because of what the USA has become. But don't worry Fred. We all love what you do and will never stop watching. God bless.
There are plenty of people who still love this Country. We've been through tough times before, The Civil War, The Great Depression, two World Wars, Vietnam and the '60s radicals, 70's gas shortages and inflation, The Cold War, 9/11 terrorists etc. Our Country will survive and prosper. We are Americans, you can't keep us down.
Thank you so much for this. After your great video here I'm remembering the bicentennial year when I was age 21 and sure yearning for that uncomplicated, more innocent time.
Eighth grade. Did a lot of growing up in 1976. The prospect of entering high school next year was looming large on my horizon and my young mind worked hard to live up to that maturity.
A changing of the culture was happening. Great video of an early "Blondie" appearance on stage (likely a NYC club) while Elvis had about 8 months to live.
A real blast from the past; thank you for this. I hope you youngsters realize the original TV broadcasts were more clear and crisp than these aged second and 3rd generation BETA and VHS recordings.
Hands-up if you were a product of 1970s USA. It was a very troubled time with failed politics, unjustified war, crappy cars, and post-60s stoner mentality, but also produced a lot of great rock/disco music and hilarious big-hair fashion, and Fonzie-Ayyy! No "smart phones", no "social media" and making a difference meant getting off your ass and going outside to face reality. Glad to have come of age during that crazy decade.
Here's a fun story about the 1976 King Kong. When it was filming, there was an article or ad in the newspaper saying that there would be filming at the World Trade Center on such and such a date, and if you show up you might be in the movie! Being about 14 and living on Long Island, I convinced my parents to take us. When we got there, there was a giant dummy of the dead King Kong at the bottom of the WTC for the final scene. It was very impressive. Filming however, was going to take place at night, and we were there in the day and didn't want to stay that long. We did however to to the top of the WTC, which was very cool in itself. A great day!
While watching December 76, I came across a commercial for the Ford thunderbird 1977. That was my dream car. I had one from February 84 to January 87. I kick myself for selling that car.
Great job, Fred! This was a big month of transition for my family, as at the beginning we moved about 1200 miles, changing schools midyear for myself and my older sister & brother. 4:45 - I think this is Paul Burke, but I'm not certain. 5:13 - The next commercial confirms that it is. My first memory of him is seeing him playing an older love interest for Julie McCoy on LOVE BOAT. 7:00 - He was gone just 8 months later. 7:53 - This became VISA just a few years later. 9:45 - Wasn't Odyssey the same as Pong? 13:30 - My favorite Pink Panther Movie! This has other great highlights like an animated opening, "Does your dog bite", and Clousseau fighting a moat to get into a castle. 14:42 - I got to see this movie at the theater. I remember poor Ned Beatty's character was knocked off on the train. I think that's "Jaws" throwing Wilder's character off the train. 18:20 - I loved this Disney film. I had the book read to my class. It had a lot less action than the movie, but they were both great. The movie's been remade a few times since.
original motion picture of all time. Big talk for a remake of a way better movie more than 30 years earlier Bound for Glory, a terrific movie that deserves to be better remembered Barney Miller -one of the all time greats
Probably my favorite Christmas in many ways … appropriate as 1976 is probably still the most enjoyable year of my life (doesn’t say much for my adult life I know, but… lol). Comics, TV, music, sports … everything was so much fun that year. Loved Kirby’s take on 2001. The one thing I DIDN’T love from that year is that dreadful version of King Kong. Went to see it with my dad at a downtown movie theater (as they still had those!) - and Dad always rated the 1933 Willis O’Brien version as his favorite film. We left the theater kind of shaking our heads. New Hollywood gritty realism just didn’t work for Kong - though to be fair, I don’t think the 1933 version can ever be equaled in my eyes … so I’m kind of biased towards it. I miss my Dad … sigh.
I remember December of 1976 very well. The Reds were world champs. Tony Perez was traded away to Montreal. On Christmas Day we had a little snow and I got a pewter key ring with the autographs of all the 1976 Cincinnati Reds on it, including Perez. I also got a couple of beautiful records with nice music. The Waltons aired "The Best Christmas" that year.
Thus ends the bicentennial year. 😢 And you've unofficially launched the Christmas season with this one, Fred, which I'm sure will probably be in full swing by Labor Day, judging by the Halloween candy and decorations I've seen in the stores already. 😡 Next up, 1977, the year of Meatloaf, Star Wars and the passing of Elvis!😢
The month I turned six years old. My older brother had a king Kong lunchbox the graphic was identical to the poster in your video. I don’t remember the TV shows as first-runs anyway. What can I say? I had to go to bed at 8:30
My sons loved that King Kong lunch box, which I bought in a junk barn along with other vintage finds. “Fun With the Metric System” was probably the nuttiest.
Hey, look at that. Walkie Talkies are still the same price! What a concept, men boxing men instead of beating up women. IIRC, Blondie said she didn't remember the entire decade. The Spirit of '76. Better times.
Thank you Fred for taking us away from the horror of todays messed up world and giving us the sweet memories of yesterday!
My pleasure, Bridget.

Blondie is the band, Debbie Harry is the singer!
