  • The new fall TV season can't offset the tragedy at the Olympics. But at least Elvis is still alive.

The biggest RipOff in Olympic history happened in 1972 when the American basketball team won the gold medal, but then it had snatched away because the judges kept pushing back the clock enough time for the Soviets to put in the winning basket. We smartly refused the silver medal.

I still think it was Bush League that they refused the silver medal. Human error is part of sports… plus they completely misplayed the last play. No way in hell you should give up a layup on a full court inbounds pass

Give it up to my fellow Gen-Xers who watched every TV show on this and growing up in the greatest time for entertainment in between going outside for hours and our parents not knowing what we are doing and before going to bed at 8 or for the spoiled ones 10.

Early Gen-X here (born 1965). I remember all of these TV shows and some of the news events too. I remember the horror at the Munich Olympics (just a day before I started 2nd grade) when Jim McKay announced "they're all gone" (and that's also when I learned what "guerrillas" were, because my 7-year old mind thought gorillas were loose in the Olympic village). My bedtime during school nights was always 8:30pm (Sunday night through Thursday), but on Fridays, Saturdays and holidays I could stay up until 10. And I was really spoiled, I had a portable black & white TV in my room! I also remember Elton John's "Honky Cat", "Alone Again Naturally" and "Hold Your Head Up" by Argent being played all over the radio then.

Like so many of us, the 72 Olympics is the first one I can remember and it left such a big impression that no other Olympics will ever compare. I was 12 years old in 72 and watched every day that they were on. My 6th grade teacher even brought in a TV during the day so we could see some of the action. Besides the terror event, Mark Spitz was the most memorable athlete of those games for me. Anyone remember Dave Wottle and his golf cap in the 800 meter run? Did you know his bib number for that race was 1033?

Wow Fred! This one is jam packed with wonders. That Olympics......nothing more to say. Man, Julie Andrews was so very hot! I loved The Waltons from the very start (the TV movie with Patricia Neal). I still watch the show today. And I never missed an episode of The Rookies. That opening theme is terrific (and I had a slight crush on Kate Jackson). I didn't fall in love with "Alone again, naturally" until the 1990's, when I discovered a Japanese manga called "Maison Ikkoku." I then started watching the anime of the same name. The female lead, Kyoko, would play the song all the time for she was a widow. The show even used it to open one of the episodes, closing with O'Sullivan's song, "Get Down." 14:29 isn't that the "mailman" from Three Days of the Condor? And at 21:19 isn't that Jayne Kennedy? Such a beautiful woman. Phew, you must be exhausted after putting this one together Fred. I know I am after watching it, but it is a fun exhaustion, seeing all this great stuff from the country I miss so much. Thanks Fred.

@17:50 is one from my area; "Belkin Productions/WMMS present David Bowie and The Spiders from Mars." I listened to "The Home of the Buzzard" constantly throughout the 70s...and those ticket prices! You can't even find a parking space for that today.

In either 77 or 78, Mark Spitz launched a swimwear line called “Arena”.
He would come to various towns that had sporting good stores in the mall and put on an exhibit. I was chosen as one of his models with one other guy and six girls. Anyway, Mark was a true gentleman to all of us and never creeped on any of the women. I thought he was a class act.

I turned five years old in September 1972 living in NYC. An innocent time it surely was. Oh, and Fred you forgot to put in a sports page clipping of Roberto Clemente getting his 3,000 career and final base hit of his life against the Mets before he died in December of '72. But the video was well done anyways. 👏👍

6:40 as a kid, I hated The Waltons. So when the theme music came on, it was a race to jump off the couch and get to the tv to change the channel, least the music infect me with some sort of Walton-loving virus. Hearing that music just now triggered that same feeling, over fifty years later! 😂
